VOLUNTEER with the VSLC Patrick Tadlock, Director VSLC
As an institution of higher education in Oklahoma, UCO has the unique opportunity to provide for the good of society through the use of our most important resource, our people. The final line of the UCO Mission Statement reads as follows, “UCO contributes to the intellectual, cul-tural, economic and social advancement of the communities and indi-viduals it serves.” This call to action not only applies to our students, but also our staff and faculty. The Volunteer and Service Learning Center recognizes this need and is committed to providing support to our fellow staff and faculty members looking for volunteer opportunities. The VSLC staff is more than happy to speak with you regard-ing volunteer options for you or your office. We also offer a full list of service partners. This list can be accessed at https://orgsync.com/119/community/opportunities. You may also contact the VSLC in person at [email protected], ext. 2621, or visit our office in NUC 212. As a reminder, we have a significant, but often underutilized policy in place at UCO that shows our institution’s commitment to community involvement. This is our Community Service Leave Policy. The policy allows eligible employees with paid time off to volun-teer for external community service.
This policy allows for up 16 hours of leave to be taken per fiscal year for external com-munity service. This leave must be approved by the employee’s supervisor and logged through the VSLC. For more information about the policy and a link to log your service hours please visit http://www.uco.edu/administration/human-resources/benefits/leave/community-service-leave.asp.
One opportunity we would like to highlight is the Cen-tral Pantry. This service will be reaching its fifth year of service to our UCO community this fall. The pantry, as many know, is open to all faculty, staff and students at UCO. Anyone from our community can also donate or volunteer at the Pantry. We rely on
volunteers to staff the pantry. We also do not use student funds or University funds to purchase food for the Pantry.
This means we rely heavily on donations of non-perishable food and money to keep our shelves stocked. The pantry serves approxi-mately 400 people a month. It is open from 9am-4pm on any day the University is open. You can contact the Volunteer and Service Learning Center via email, phone, or in per-son if you would like to volunteer, donate, or use the Pantry. (continued on page 2)

Another major opportunity we have coming up on the horizon is the Oklahoma City Memo-rial Marathon. We have established a partnership with the Oklahoma City National Memori-al and Museum to provide volunteers on several occasions both before and during the mar-athon. The Memorial Marathon this spring will be April 30th. We will have one opportunity to volunteer that morning at the start corrals. This is always an early start, but a deeply ful-filling opportunity. You can sign up or find more details at www.uco.edu/okstandard.
If an early morning start is not your thing, we also offer another opportunity to help support the marathon on April 21st. We will be helping prepackage supplies for the runner support stations that dot the marathon route. This opportunity will take place in two shifts from 8-
10 a.m. and 10 a.m.-12noon. You can sign up for one or both of the shifts. This will be a great opportunity for you to use your community service leave hours. You can find out more info and sign up for this opportunity at www.uco.edu/okstandard.
As mentioned, service is a very important part of our mission at UCO and we look forward to helping you fulfill this com-
mitment and show everyone why we are “The Metro’s University.”

Both proposals passed. Additionally, a motion to request a joint resolution with Faculty Senate affirming the Senates’
shared stance on weapons on campus was presented and passed. For more detailed information on Senate meetings, as well as the recently elected senators to begin terms in July 2017, please see the UCO Staff Senate website. Save the Date! The University of Central Oklahoma is a microcosm of the diverse world we live in. As employees, our global and cultural compe-tence has a direct impact on our ability to effectively interact with and serve our constituents. This year’s employee conference will focus on helping attendees explore our interconnectedness by focusing on what it means to be globally and culturally competent, how to interact with indi-viduals who are “different” than we are, and encourage better attitudes, awareness, and respect for all people. Registration for this year’s Employee Conference will be available in mid-late April.

Kudos Adrienne Martinez! Adrienne Martinez, EEO/Title IX Coordinator and current OCU Law student, recently competed in the ABA Appellate Competition Regional in San Francisco. Her team returned with honors and they ad-vanced to the national competition as one of four regional champions. Martinez and her team beat UC Davis by a 5-0 decision in the final elimination round. Their road to the final round included wins over excellent teams from UC Berkeley and the University of Notre Dame. Martinez was recognized
as the fifth best advocate. Congratulations, Adrienne!
Thanks to all UCO Employees!
On March 3rd, UCO faculty, staff, and student employees gathered at Buddy’s Cafeteria to celebrate National Employ-ee Appreciation Day. Human Resources sponsored the annual event and employees were treated to specialty desserts, ice cream, free drinks, games, and a commemorative UCO gift. Central appreciates all of our exceptional employees!
The National Student Employment Association (NSEA) designates one week each year for universities and colleges across the country to recognize the substantial contribu-tions of students who work on campus. This year, National Student Employment Week is April 9-15. At UCO, student employment offers students career-enhancing opportu-nities, the ability to develop skills relevant in any career, and better preparation for the job market upon graduation.
Of course, a primary motivation for most students is the need to help pay for their education. Many students are able to earn a significant portion
of their college expenses, thus avoiding the debt burden so common with college graduates today. As those who have hired students can attest, student employees perform invaluable services with enthusi-asm, dedication, and initiative.
Supervisors are encouraged to contact Employee Relations (X2932) to learn about unique recognition items available (at no cost to your department) for their student employees.

Employee Central 5K Walk/Run Justine Mankin, Benefits
Human Resources and the Department of Wellness and Sport have revamped the 2017 Central 5K. Registration is free to all UCO faculty and staff and the first 150 to register will receive an event shirt. The event encourages walking, jog-ging and running individually or as part of a team. The Central 5K will be part four of our wellness series “Healthy, Wealthy and Wise.” Walking and running are great forms of exercise that can be completed without a gym or equip-ment and are especially great as warmer temperatures arrive. The new Central 5K will take place on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. beginning at Plunkett Park and snaking throughout cam-pus. Departments who participate in the Get ‘Em (Go Exercising Togeth-er, Encourage and Motivate) Program are encouraged to participate in the Central 5K together as teams. Five participants will be randomly se-lected to win a $50 Sprouts gift card that can used to purchase local, healthy groceries. Being active is a great way to manage weight, increase activity and com-bat stress. Human Resources and the Department of Wellness and Sport are committed to employee wellness. For more ways to get involved with resources offered by both departments visit the Benefits’ and Wellness Center’s websites.
