Cheshire Home, Inc. …Serving Physically Disabled Adults Since 1981 Fall 2009

October is National Disability Employment Awareness MonthAs Cheshire Home residents transition from computer training and higher academia into the workplace, they demonstrate the significant employment contributions of the disabled population nationwide. Each year organizations and businesses throughout the country pause to celebrate the advances made in the area of Disability Employment, and reflect also on advances yet to come. This year, the U.S. Department of Labor announced “Expectation + Opportunity = Full Participation” as the official theme for October’s National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

As employers seek to fill positions, to embrace the richness of America’s diversity by considering the talents of all workers, including workers with disabilities, job postings at the following locations may result in a larger pool of qualified candidates from which to choose:

• Workforce employment centers • College and university career centers

• Disability advocacy organizations • Disability-related websites

• Disability-related job fairs • Internship and mentoring programs

Advocating for the Disabled Population

Resident Richard Thomas, the vice-president of the Cheshire Home Resident Council, advocates through his church on behalf of disabled individuals. Richard is an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Morristown, which has long been noted for its involvement in the community.

Richard prioritizes services for the elderly, homeless people, and the disabled, and he works to influence members of his congregation to reach out and assist these underserved populations.

A long-time resident of Cheshire Home, Richard is also employed as an instructor assistant in our Community Resource Center, specializing in computer proficiencies.

Morning, noon and night, Cheshire Home provides occupational and physical therapy onsite, helping our residents maximize their mobility.

Jets Welcome Cheshire Home!

Residents and staff had the opportunity to visit the Jets new Atlantic Health Training Center, watch practice from the side lines, and hang with the team! Many thanks to Jets Community Relations Director Jessie Linder, Coach Rex Ryan, and all the Jets and Flight Crew who made us feel right at home.

The New Jersey Community Transportation Training Program, New Jersey Transit and R-TAP awarded Mandy Hecht a scholarship to the 2009 Annual Community Transportation Conference in Providence, Rhode Island. The conference, held on May 31-June 5, showcased the theme “A New Era Dawns for Community Transportation.”

A highlight of the program was a two-day intensive training session entitled “Partnerships for Wellness.” Dale Marsico, Executive Director of C.T.A.A. was a keynote speaker, and Mandy felt that, “His presentation was not only remarkable, but made the audience feel Mr. Marsico was speaking to each participant personally.” Additional presenters were from the American Cancer Society, the Children’s Health Care Foundation and the National Center

for Senior Transportation, covering topics inclusive of ADA Paratransit, Medicaid Brokerage Rules, Coordinated Services for Health Care, and Medicaid Transportation.

A two-day Trade Show featured the latest equipment and technology available to transportation service providers. The forum session, “Building Transportation Programs for Tomorrow” addressed development and coordination of human service transportation in all states, and effective strategies for creating successful partnerships.

Ms. Hecht had the opportunity to serve as a judge for the “20th” Anniversary National Community Roadeo, an experience she terms “an honor and great fun!” Capping off the excitement, the New Jersey Council

on Special Transportation (NJ COST) was awarded the Community Transportation Association of America 2009 State Leadership Award! Congratulations to all!

Cheshire of the AmericasCheshire Home participated in the “Cheshire of the Americas” conference sponsored by Leonard Cheshire Disability, and held in Barbados. Participants represented disability services for people in the United States, Canada, England, Grenada, Barbados, Argentina, Nicaragua, Columbia, Guyana, and Trinidad. The diverse populations served include people with spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, brain injuries, intellectual challenges, birth defects, amputations due to land mines, as well as children and adults who have been abandoned due to their disability. The ages of people served by our various organizations spans infancy through the senior years. The men and women who came together for this conference brought a great amount of dedication and demonstrated a spirit of collaboration throughout each session, as we brainstormed effective strategies for: service delivery that promotes independence, fundraising, public relations, Board efficiency, community partnerships, volunteerism, and global values and standards. Our colleagues throughout the Americas expressed a great interest in the unique programs of Cheshire Home, Cheshire II and Cheshire III!

Executive Director’s C O R N E RDuring these times of economic challenge your support has been invaluable to us. Cheshire Home, along with countless non-profits nationwide, has felt the effects of the fiscal downturn, but we have at the same time been strengthened by the generosity and dedication of our Board of Trustees, benefactors and volunteers.

In particular, your support has helped us sustain specialized vocational and educational training, and has made it possible for us to transport residents to work and to college. Our unique training enables Cheshire’s residents as well as disabled students from the community to utilize adaptive technology, and to enrich their lives through higher academia and viable career paths. We are deeply committed to this program, and I’m pleased to share that record numbers of residents are currently attending college and attaining employment.

Quality of life enhancements necessitate facility upgrades and equipment replacement, and we’re enormously grateful for the charitable philanthropy that recognizes our need in this regard. That spirit of caring extends to our volunteers who continue to give of themselves and of their time and expertise to lend a hand where needed, always demonstrating the meaning of selflessness.

Recently three Cheshire Home residents transitioned successfully to independent living. Their accomplishments are extraordinary, and reflective of your fine works on their behalf.

Cheshire of the Americas

Cheshire Home wishes to pay tribute to Larry Keller, a true friend and supporter of our organization. A long-time resident of Short Hills and Londonderry, Vermont, he was beloved by many for his caring philosophy and spirit of philanthropy. Larry was well-known to our residents and staff, and together with his wife Barbara, opened his home each year to our residents for the “annual Keller picnic.” Barbara, who served for many years as a member of the Cheshire Home Board of Trustees, remains a friendly and familiar face at our Home, and we’re privileged to count Larry and Barbara as friends.
