Electronic fuel injection engine. For high output. Andlow fuel consumption. What's more - and importantcleaner exhaust gases.

Engine output is no less than 130 b. h, p.SAE at 6000 r.p.m. Designed and builtto triumph over the widely varyingtraffic rhythm of today. Non-stop day-l ong driving or stop and start city snarl-ups. The high degree of torque in themid-engine speed range ensures excel-lent low-speed tractability. And the highoutput gives a wonderful stinging per-formance.The outward appearance of the Volvo1800E expresses in smooth flowing linesthe character of its engine. The electronically controlled fuel injec-tion engine is truly a product of the com-puter age.The carburettors are replaced by a small"electronic brain". This well tried unitcontrols the four injectors which feed theprecise amounts of fuel to the cylinders. The electronic control system reads offengine speed, coolant temperature, airtemperature and pressure continuously. The injection phase is of vital importancefor the characteristics of an engine. Theexactness of our electronic "box oftricks" gives practically complete com-bustion and ensures low fuel consump-tion throughout the entire speed range. An added advantage is the extremelysmall toxic content emitted in the form ofexhaust gases by the engine. This elec-tronically-controlled injection system isnot effected by the ambient air pressure.Over the mountains or across the plains

it makes no difference -- this carbreathes easy, takes all in its stride. And should the temperature fall, to evensub-zero readings, this engine is still aneasy starter since the injection systemfeatures a special choke unit.

Otherwise our E-engine has the samebasic construction as the standard Volvoengine which means that it is a four-cylinder overhead valve unit with a five-bearing crankshaft. And a transmission that operatessmoothly and quietly.Four distinct gear positions, full syn-chronization. The stubby gear lever isi deally placed between the front seats. An electrically operated overdrive isstandard. Not so much for the extraspeed. But for quieter, smoother, safety-fast motoring and using less fuel!

About 300 different parts make up theelectronic control unit. This is the brainof our fuel injection system.

The steering wheel is designed to give full visual access to the excellent instruments. The hub is dished and safety padded. All controls and instruments are locatedwithin easy reach. In the centre the rev. counter, speedometer with mileometer andtripmeter and also the water and fuel temperature gauges. To the right the fuel gauge, oil pressure gauge and an electric clock. The combination lever on the left of thesteering column controls the turn indicators, main and dipped headlight beams andalso the headlight flasher. Instrument lighting is of course rheostat controlled. Four-way emergency warning flashers.Heating and ventilation feature fingertip control. On both sides of the dashboard areconvenient storage pockets. And in the middle on the transmission tunnel is a lock-able oddments console.Automatic transmission. Comfortable and practical. A pure relaxation to drive!
