The four-day week is coming. But a car for thethree-day weekend is already here..

The Volvo 1800ES sports car was designed as an instru-ment of pleasure.

It's intendedfor two people who want to getawayfrom it all quickly and with all the luggage theyneed to take their time about coming home.

In building this car, we successfully resisted thetemptation to impose our 145station wagon design on it.Instead, we refined the shape of our 1800E sport's car.

By extending the roof line backward andadding a glass tailgate, we created two things: more-than-ample luggage space and a handsome car.

Of course, the enjoyment of owning an1800ES doesn't have to be confined to long weekends. You should even find it pleasurable making short tripsto the supermarket. And counting the heads that turn.

On a long-distance haul, your position atthe finish should be comfortable and relaxed.

The surfaces of your bucketseats are leather upholstered. And the seats are built so thatat the end of a long drive, youcan still look forward to thepleasure ahead. Rather thanthe pain behind.

They were designed byorthopedic surgeons who know

' the human form takes manyshapes. So the seats are adjus-table in a multitude of ways.

They travel forward andbackward. Both front seats canbe raised to three different ele-vations. The tilt of the scatcushions can be changed.

Finally, the seat backs

adjust all the way from verticalto a sleeping position. So youcan fly past motels while yournavigator naps on a seat thatCar & Driver magazine called"...the most hospitable in thebusiness."

For the driver's comfort, the floor-mounted, 4-speed gearshift is close at hand. His leftfoot rests on a support plate.Tinted glass all around rests theeyes. The driver's visibility isexcellent: a sloping hood to seewhat's immediately in front;a glass tailgate to see what'stailgating behind.

A thermostatically con-

trolled fresh air heating andventilation system is standard. It was designed to performabove the Arctic Circle. Andis supplemented by a two-speedfan.

Instrumentation includesa tachometer for measuringengine rpm's and a tripmeterwhich is not only useful ontrips but also for measuringmiles between stops at the gasstation. The 1800ES operateson regular 91-octane gas. An-other comforting feature.

New rocker switches as well as thei nstrumentation are illuminated at night.

I he tachometer and all other instruments, ire standard equipment.

How many suit cases you'll pack is no longerlimited by the size of the trunk. Only by the sizeof your wardrobe.

The Volvo 1800ES hasa back seat. We haven't men-tioned it earlier for this reason:while it has two lap belts andis suited for children, its prin-cipal function is to fold out ofthe way and create the luggagecompartment yawning at youi n the picture.

There are 35 cubic feetof space in there. Which comei n handy, not only at vacationti me, but at lawnmower sharp-ening time. Or bicycle repairingtime. Or any time you wantto carry something that's nomore than five feet long or fourfeet wide or 22 inches high.

The rear window thatleads to the trunk is a tale initself. You can lift the glasseasily because two cylindersof compressed gas assist you.It defrosts through electricallyheated wires on the glass. Andlike all the windows, it's slightlytinted to reduce glare.

All it doesn't do is washitself. But we're working on it.

We engineer the 1800 ES like all our Volvos.(Only the shape of the car the engineeringcomes in is different.)

The engine is our two-litre, computer-controlled,fuel-injected engine. Fueli njection takes the place ofcarburetors and when it'sgoverned by an electroniccomputer (see photo), itresults in maximum engineefficiency under most drivingconditions. So changes inaltitude or climate need notsend you off to the shop fora tune-up. Fuel injection also

produces a cleaner exhaust. The transmission is our

4-speed manual synchro-mesh transmission with anelectrically operatedoverdrive standard for theES. For 1973, we loweredthe first gear ratio from3.13:1 to 3.41:1 for fasterstarts.

Power disc brakes arestandard on all four wheels. The split braking system is

designed so that if one circuitfails, you still retain about 80 11cbraking efficiency.

The body is protectedagainst rust with multiplecoats of phosphating, primerand paint. The underside getstwo separate undercoats.

So while the Volvo1 800ES was designed forpleasure, we weren't foolingaround when we put ittogether:

1 1 11, computer is the brains of our electronic fuel injectionsystem i t has five electronic sensors that monitor air and coolant

t emperature, air pressure, rpm's and throttle position. Fromt hese readings, the computer determines what precise quantityof fuel should be injected into the cylinders. And orders iti njected.

An automatic transmission that's optional. And seven featuresthat automatically comes with your I800ES.

An optional 3-speed automatictransmission with illuminated, floor-mounted gear selector is available.

Low profile radial ply tires arestandard equipment on all live wheels. The

keeps it clear so that your hindsight i s ; ngood as your foresight.

A disc brake is slow to fade evenafter repeated stops. When it's powerassisted, you don't have to tromp downas hard on the brake pedal. All fourbrakes on the Volvo 1800ES are power-
