Thiscurriculumrepresentstheminimumrequirementstoacquireanextrankorcolouredbelt.Duringclasseverythingistaught

inastructuralandsystematicalway.Theinstructorswillrecommendcertaintechniquestostartwithasabeginner.Duringthe

examinationyouarefreetodemonstratethetechniquesthatyoulikebestorthatsuityourmorphology.Inthisway,youhave

alotoffreedomtodevelopyourfavoritemovesindepth.Thereisalotofroomforpersonalgrowth,developmentandcreativity.

Weencourageyoutodevelopyourownstyle.Thegoalistoeventuallybeabletoapplyyourtechniquesinfightsimulationdrills

(orrandoricontact)andlivesparring.Techniquesevolveallthetime,andsodoesourcurriculum.Asyouprogressitbecomes

moreimportanttounderstandthesystemandunderlyingconceptsbehindtheindividualtechniques.Westriveforqualityand

depthoverquantityandsuperficiality.

Whiteandyellowbeltsareconsideredbeginnerlevel.Alotofemphasisisonthebasictechniques.Orangeandgreenbeltsare

consideredintermediatelevel.Moreemphasisisonthefightsimulationdrillsandsparring.Blueandbrownbeltsareconsidered

advancedlevel.Alotofemphasisisonthefightsimulationdrillsandsparring.

GUIDELINES

SoloDrills:thesearefundamentalmovementsperformedwithoutapartner.Theycanbeshowninonecompletewarmingup

exercise.Dothemassmoothaspossible.

Striking:demonstratedwithpartner.

BoxingComboshavetobeatleast2techniquesandmaximum5(punchesonly).Kickboxingcomboshavetobeatleast3techniquesandmaximum5(punchesandkicks).

OtherFist&OpenHandStrikes:hammerfist,backfist,palmstrike,knifehand,andsoon…

CloseCombatComboshavetobeatleast3techniques,performedonanattackofanykind(grab,punch,kick)incorporating

elbows,knees,andotherclosequarterstechniques.Thesamecombinationcanbeperformedondifferentattacks,butmake

sureyoucanperformmorethan1combination.

Throws&Takedowns:youcanchoosehowyoudemonstratethethrows.Youcandoaclassicaljudoapplicationorfromaself-

defensetypescenario.Also,youcandothesamethrowfromdifferentset-upsordifferentattacks.Yellowbeltsandabove:

makesureyouknowmorethan1throwineachgroup.

AHipThrowinvolvesusingyourhipasapivotpoint,byplacingthehipinalowerpositionthantheopponent’scenterof

gravity.

ALegThrowisathrowortakedownthatprimarilyusesthelegstoattackanopponent’slegs.

AHandThrowinvolveseffectivelyusingyourhands/armstothrowanopponent.

ASacrificeThrowisathrowortakedownwheretheexecutionerfallsonhis/herbackorside.

Jointlocks:youcanchoosehowyoudemonstratethelocks,startingfromanattackinastandingpositionorfromastarting

positionontheground.Differentset-upsorvariationsofthesamelockarepossible.Yellowbeltsandabove:makesureyou

knowmorethan1lockineachgroup.

Wrist-andFingerlocksarelocksthatprimarilyattackthewristand/oroneormorefingers.StraightArmlocksarearmbarsthathyperextendtheelbowjoint.

BentArmlocksarearmlocksthatalsoaffecttheshoulder.

Leglockscanbebentorstraight(straightfootlocks,heelhooks,kneebars,toeholds,calfslicers).Neckcranksarelocksthatattackthecervicalvertebraeinanykindofway.

Chokes:youcanchoosehowyoudemonstratethechoke(orstrangulation),startingfromanattackinastandingpositionor

fromastartingpositionontheground.Differentset-upsorvariationsofthesamechokearepossible.Yellowbeltsandabove:

makesureyouknowmorethan1chokeineachgroup.

GiChokes:aredonewithaidofthegi.

NoGiChokes:thinkRNC,guillotine,head&armchoke,d’arce,nogiEzekiel,…

Defenses:Thislargesectionisheavilyself-defensebased.Attacksshouldbedynamicandrealisticthoughwithmanageable

resistanceforthedefendertobeabletodemonstratethetechniqueinaclear&properway.

WristReleases:freeyourselffromanykindofwristgrab(1-on-1,2-on-1,2-on-2,inverted,…)

FrontandRearChokeDefenses:anykindofchokeasanattack:standing,ontheground,againstawall,2hands,1hand,

forearm,…(onlyguillotineisaseparatesection).Afrontattackmeansthattheattackerisvisible(alsofromtheside).Arear

attackmeansthattheattackeris(orwas)notvisible.

Defensesagainstpushingandshoving:anypushispossible(1hand,2hands,slowandsteady,fastandhard).

StandingandGroundHeadlockDefenses:thisisatypical“streetfight”headlockfromtheside(noarmcontrol).Standing

headlockdefensescangotothegroundbutstartstanding.

BearhugDefenses:theattackergrabswithhisarmsaroundyourbodyandwantstocontrolyou,moveyou,throwyouorlift

youup.

NelsonDefenses:defenseagainstafullnelsonfromstandingposition.Theattackerwantstocontrolyouand/ordamage

yourneck.

DefensesagainstHairGrabs:fromthefront,fromtheback,standingandontheground.

DefensesagainstClothingGrabs:Collargrabs,lapelgrabs,sleevegrabs,onehanded,twohanded,fromthefront,fromthe

back,…alotofpossibilities.

GuillotineDefenses:theattackisafrontheadlockwhichcanresultinadangerouschoke.Canbeperformedstandingoron

theground.

DefenseagainstPunchesandkicks:theattackerwantstopunchorkickyou(canbeprecededbyagrip).Youcanblock

and/orcounterwithstrikesorwithgrapplingtechniquesoracombinationofboth.

WeaponDefenses:attackscancomefromdifferentangles.Makesureyouhaveananswerforeveryangle.Especiallybluebelts

Guard

Get-ups:whenlyingonyourback,howtogetbackonyourfeetandgetbacktoasafedistance.Thiscanbeperformedfrom

differenttypesofsituations(attackerstanding,kneeling,choking,crushing,…)

Sweeps:puttingyouropponentonhis/herbackwiththeuseofyourlegsandhips.Thiscanbeperformedfromanykindof

open,closedorhalfguard.Youhavetofollowupwithadominantpositionwithoutlosingcontrol.

Submissions:jointlockorchoke.Canbeperformedfromanykindofopen,closedorhalfguard.

Passes:canbeperformedkneelingorstanding,againstanykindofguard.Fromclosedguard,youwillfirstneedtobreakthe

guard(uncrossthefeet).Follow-upwithadominantposition.

SideControl/KOB

Pins:thesearemethodsofholdingyouropponentonhis/herbackwhileyouareonhis/herside:kesagatameandvariations,

yokoshihogatameandvariations,north-south,kneeonbelly,katagatame,…

Escapes:knowhowtoescapeandimproveyourpositionfromdifferentkindsofpins.Ifyoucandemonstrate3escapes

fromthesamepin,thatisgreatbutmakesureyoucanescapedifferentkindsofpins.

Submissions:anyjointlockorchokefromanyoftheaforementionedsidecontrolpositionsisasubmission.

Mount

Pins:thesearemethodsofholdingyouropponentonhisbackwhileyouareontopofhim/her:middlemount(airplane

base),lowmount(withhooks),highmount(kneesunderarmpits),technicalmount,aclassicaljudotateshihogatame,…

Escapes:improveyourpositionfromthebottomofthemount.Yellowbeltsorabove:makesureyouunderstandthetrap&

rollescapeaswellastheelbowtokneeescapewithvariations.

Submissions:anyjointlockorchokefromanyofthedifferentmountpositionsisasubmission.

BackMount/Turtle

Attacks:youareonyourpartnersbackorhe/sheisonallfours(elbowsandknees).Youcansubmityouropponentwitha

chokeorjointlockbutyoucanalsodoaturnoverofaturtledopponentandestablishadominantpositionwithoutlosing

control.

Defenses:knowhowtoimproveyourpositionwithyouropponentonyourback.Youropponentcanbeinbackmount(with

hooksin)oryoucanbeforcedinaturtleposition(onallfours).

FightSimulationDrills:Thesearetrainingmethodswithaco-operativetrainingpartnerthatsimulateaself-defenseorstreet

fightscenario.Itisnotarealfightorsparringsession.Attacksshouldbedynamicandrealisticwithmanageableresistance.

Escapes:thegoalistogetyourselftosafety(toasafedistance)withoutescalatingthesituation(nounnecessarystriking).

Showasmanyescapesasyoucanwithinthelimitedtime(standingandground).

Sparring:thisisatrainingmethodtolearnhowtoapplyyourtechniquesonanonco-operativetrainingpartner.Thefocusis

notonwinningorlosingbutshowinggoodtechnique,skill,perseveranceandheart.Forwhiteandyellowbelts,thereisno

sparringrequiredfortheexamination.

Semi-ContactSparring:thisisaformoflight-contactkickboxing.Nograbbingallowed.

FightSimulationSparring:yourtrainingpartneriswearingboxingglovesandisonlyallowedtopunchyou.Youarenot

allowedtousestrikesandyouhavetobeabletocontrolandsubmityourtrainingpartnerwithyourskills.Forblueand

brownbelt,therewillbeafightsimulationwithastrikingopponentaswellasafightsimulationwithaknifeattacker.

SubmissionGrappling:thegoalistosubmiteachotherwithachokeorjointlock.Youcanbothstartstanding,oroneortwo

partnersontheground.Nostrikingallowed.Forgreenbeltandabove,thelastroundisperformedNoGi.

NoGiStreetSparring:bothtrainingpartnersarewearingprotectivegear(mma-gloves,…).Contactislightandalways

controlled.Nostrikingallowedfrombottompositions,withtheexceptionoftheguard.
