CAMPBELL UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S SOCCER

Samar Azem was named head coach in July of 2017 after serving as an assistant coach for one year and an associate head coach for two seasons. An alumna of Campbell, Azem was a goalkeeper for the Camels women’s soccer program from 2003-07.

In 2016, Azem coached an attack that led the conference in goals (40), assists (43) and points (123). The Camels had six athletes named to all-conference teams, including Alexa Genas, Payton Ormsby and Murita Storey, who received First-Team All-Conference honors. The Campbell defense posted six shutouts on the year, including three in a row to end the season and clinch a top-4 seed for the Camels in the conference tournament.

In her second season with Campbell, Azem continued to improve the Camels goalkeepers and defense. The team finished the campaign with a 0.99 goals-against average overall and a 1.11 goals-against in Big South play. The senior goalkeeping duo recorded a combined eight shutouts during the season, en route to Campbell’s runner-up finish in the Big South Tournament. She also led the team training sessions, which saw the team reach high offensive outputs.

The Camels offensive scoring per game ranked fourth in the Big South (1.52), with their assists (39) ranking first in the conference and 26th in Division I. The team finished third in the conference in total goals on the season (32) and second in total points (103).

During her first season at Campbell in 2014, Azem primarily focused on goalkeepers and the defense. Prior to Azem’s arrival, the 2013-14 season had a 2.27 goals-against average (39 goals), which was second lowest in the Big South. During her first season, the Camels defensive group only allowed 24 goals in 18 matches, earning the second best goals-against average in the Big South at 1.18. The tandem of Alexis Connors and Samantha Lawson combined for five shutouts, improving on the three during the 2013 season. During the course of conference play, Azem also devouted time to working with and bettering the other aspects of the team throughout training and Big South games.

Prior to arriving at Campbell, Azem was the head coach at

Anderson University for three seasons (2011-13). At Anderson, she compiled a 21-24-9 overall record, with a 12-10-7 mark in three years of South Atlantic Conference play. After the 2013 season, three Trojans were placed on SAC all-conference teams, including three-time selection Kaitlyn Neipp. Azem coached 10 Trojans to postseason all-conference accolades during her tenure.

In 2011, Anderson reached the semifinal round of the SAC Tournament for the first time in program history. Azem also guided the team to a No. 8 ranking in the Southeast Region during the regular season.

Prior to Anderson, Azem served as an assistant coach at Presbyterian for the 2010 season, where she primarily focused on goalkeeper training. Blue Hose goalkeepers recorded five shutouts on the season with a 1.99 goals-against average, the strongest by a PC team during the transition to NCAA Division I. While at Presbyterian, Azem took the lead in designing, creating and implementing PC’s first-ever winter camp and worked with supporters and community groups to raise funds for facility upgrades and to boost awareness in the community.

Azem was the top assistant at Mercer during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. The Bears won their first ever regular season Atlantic Sun championship in 2008, as Azem coached keeper Jean Worts. Her goals-against-average ranked 11th in the nation among Division I goalkeepers, while the overall defense ranked sixth nationally.

In 2007, Azem began her coaching career as an assistant at Brevard College, where she coordinated recruiting, team travel, scouting, and game-day preparations.

Azem also brings club coaching experience to the Creek. She was the head coach of the 2012 ‘97 CESA Anderson and part of the SC Olympic Development Program staff. While at Mercer, she trained goalkeepers at the Central Georgia Soccer Association and the Macon Soccer Club, two of Central Georgia’s largest soccer clubs. Azem has trained and evaluated young players at Carolina Elite Soccer Association and has also organized and overseen camp and clinic sessions with a number of top Georgia clubs in the Atlanta region.

During her collegiate playing career at Campbell, Azem helped lead the Fighting Camels to the A-Sun Conference regular-season and tournament championships in 2004. In 2005, she was named to the all-Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Team for her performance in goal, helping the Camels return to the conference tournament title match. Azem also garnered A-Sun all-academic recognition and earned the squad’s Coaches Award twice (2005-06).

The Jos, Nigeria, native graduated with a bachelor’s degree in broadcasting and a minor in psychology from Campbell in 2007 and earned her master’s degree in education from Mercer in 2010.

CAMPBELL UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S SOCCER

The 2017 season will be Jamie Corti’s second year with the Campbell women’s soccer staff. She was promoted to the role of associate head coach in February of 2017 after serving as an assistant coach for the team beginning in the spring of 2016.

“We have a balanced staff, and Jamie is an integral part of that make up,” co-head coach Samar Azem said following Corti’s promotion. “She is a fantastic training coach, and is very astute at studying and breaking down the important pieces of the game that are necessary for our program and player development. Add to that her resume of winning and her incredible ability to relate to and motivate our players, and she’s definitively earned their respect.

“She’s one of the hardest working recruiters I know, and is not only well-connected but has one of the most specific recruiting eyes. She has and will continue to add critical strides in our program’s development. She knows her information and she knows how to teach it. To be able to promote her into an Associate Head Coach role is an exciting step forward for our program, and one I am personally thankful for.”

In 2016, Corti helped lead a Campbell squad that ranked first in the Big South in goals

(40), assists (43) and points (123). She played a large role in coaching the Camels’ defensive unit, which posted six shutouts on the year including three in a row to end the season and clinch a top four seed for CU in the conference tournament.

Prior to her coming to Campbell, Corti served as an assistant coach at the University of Central Florida since June of 2013. The Knights made the NCAA tournament each year during her tenure in Orlando, including a Sweet 16 appearance in the 2014 season.

As a member of the UCF staff, Corti helped the Knights appear in their ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament. In the 2014 season, she helped the Knights to their first undefeated conference record since the 1999 season. The team also won the American Athletic Conference, the first team in UCF history to do so. The team had three player of the year honors from the conference and won a

school record 18 games. Also during 2014, she earned her NSCAA GK level 1 and NSCAA Diploma.

Prior to joining the UCF staff, Corti spent two seasons at Virginia Commonwealth University as a graduate assistant where she helped the team record 13 shutouts and boast the third best goals allowed and goals-against-average in the CAA in 2010. She returned to VCU in 2012 as an assistant coach after a year as an assistant coach at her alma mater, UNC-Greensboro. During the 2012 season, she helped the Rams to a 12-5-5 record and an Atlantic 10 Championship game appearance.

Corti played collegiately at UNC Greensboro from 2004-08. During her time as a Spartan, the team captured four Southern Conference championships, including a perfect conference record for three of them. The team also made the NCAA tournament twice during that span. As a starter at center defender, the Spartans boasted a 44-4-4 record in conference play. In 2007 and 2008, she was a team captain and named team MVP. Corti was also a first-team all-SoCon selection during those two seasons.

Following the 2007 season, NSCAA and Soccer Buzz named her to the third team all-region for her outstanding performance on a backline that allowed 0.86 goals per game. During her final three years, she started 65-of-66 games, allowing just 0.92 goals-against and recording 33 shutouts.

Corti was born in Florence, Italy, and her family relocated to Apex, N.C., prior to her high school career, where she was an all-state defender at Apex High School.

• Was promoted to Associate Head Coach in February of 2017

• Assistant Coach at the University of Central Florida (2013-2015)

Olivia Mills joined the Campbell women’s soccer program in August of 2017 as an Assistant Coach for the Camels. Mills will be involved in all areas of recruiting, field instruction and administrative tasks, as well as working specifically with the goalkeepers and CU’s sport science initiatives.

She comes to the Creek from Troy, where she served as an assistant coach during the 2016 season. Under her guidance, the Troy goalkeepers only allowed 22 goals on the season, posting a stellar 1.05 goals-against-average. Mikki Lewis had a stellar 2016 season, posting seven shutouts, a 1.08 GAA, which is the fourth-best in program history, and notching 65 saves. In addition, Mills developed and facilitated the 13-week offseason strength program, mobility and muscular regeneration recovery sessions and weekly on-field lifting sessions.

Mills kicked off her coaching career in 2015 at Stetson, where she served as an assistant coach. She worked with the Hatters’ goalkeepers, as well as working closely with the staff to design and facilitate all aspects of team training. Under her tutelage, the goalkeepers posted a 1.99 goals-against-average and notched 92 saves. Mills also helped to develop physiological initiatives for the program, including heart rate monitor application and data analysis, nutrition oversight and facilitation of strength and conditioning and recovery sessions.

Prior to arriving in DeLand, Fla., Mills spent the summer of 2015 as a strength and conditioning intern at Colorado State, where she developed and executed the summer strength and conditioning program for the Rams football program.

She graduated from Valdosta State in 2015 with a degree in Exercise Physiology. Mills spent all four seasons in goal with the Blazers, and helped to lead VSU to the 2014 Gulf South Conference championship and a No. 23 overall ranking, as well as three consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament appearances from 2012-14. She earned all-conference honors on three occasions and was named to the Gulf South’s all-academic team in 2012, 2014 and 2015.

Mills has applied her exercise science degree to good use since graduating from VSU, earning five different certifications.
