VSS Creative Virtual Photography Club is
growing at a healthy pace getting top
photographers as well as keen beginners with
loads of talent on board. The young guns are
showing their worth in heaps and bounds.
To the traditional six categories: Avant Garde,
Creative Portraiture, Creative Pictorial,
Creative Nature, Creative Monochrome and
Photojournalism two more were added:
Creative Scapes and Fine Art.
A maximum of eight entries per photographer
are considered monthly with a max of two
TOP 10's per category.
The goal, to have the TOP 10 winners
published in an annual glossy ‘coffee-table’
book, was realised last year. TOP VSS
Creative TOP 10 Photographers 2018 made
this dream a reality.
VSS Creative TOP 10 Photographers 2019
represents some of the best creative
photography of 2019 in SA. TOP 10 2019 has
taken the benchmark one notch higher, which
almost seemed impossible when glancing
through TOP 10 2018 book.
The photos featured are more than 800
winning images from January to December
2019, from 160 photographers a 30%
increase of photographers reaching the TOP
10. Total entries for 2019 was more than
10,000 and around 500 photographers
competing.
TOP 10 winners are featured alphabetically with a
small bio of each photographer together with his /
her winning images of 2019. TOP 10 1st, 2nd and
3rd winners of month images are displayed larger
than others.
The last chapter, From our Judges features work
of the adjudicators, who for obvious reasons
could not enter the competition.
The first TOP 10 publication was almost a
Who’s Who of Photography - this, the 2nd publication, is an almost
definitive Who’s Who in Modern SA Photography.
Martin Dudley stated that, this publication printed
annually will be a historic reference of our work
and a history of photography in SA, 10 years from
now. The printed photo will always supercede
electronic versions flying around on the net.
I would like to thank and congratulate all
participating photographers, they inspired us and
collectively made VSS Virtual Club the towering
platform for most of the top SA photographers it is
today. And lastly my family and judges who spent hours
adjudicating and discussing top photos in order to
award winners - with the quality of work entered
this is a daunting task.
What strikes us, as judges, is the
diversity of work.

Pauline van der Spuy
For me a photography really has no beginning or end. It is a journey full of good times, some down times and plenty of learning in between. I was only able to acquire a camera late in life but this opened so many windows of opportunity. Photography has made me appreciate a level of beauty that not even the naked eye can see but it has also made me very aware of the harshness of this world. The camera brings these two worlds together. While at times this may seen bizarre, by capturing both, we keep awareness of both alive in the conscience of ourselves and others.
The value I attach to photography is not the number of photos I have, but the number of precious friendships that I
would not have had if I had not taken up this hobby.
My camera is not only a treasured possession, it is a solace during times of stress. One can capture one's own emotions in pictures so as not to be sucked into the dark abyss of depression during challenging times.
It is also a tool which I use to celebrate those special moments that may never be repeated in life. To capture memories and moments in time, is like building a treasure store and leaving a priceless heritage. We don't build albums but simply record chapters of our lives and experiences, in pictures.
VSS has certainly challenged me to stretch my photographic boundaries. It has been an exciting and stimulating journey and I hope the journey never ends.

Peet van den Berg
I am fascinated by light. The nuances intrigue me endlessly.
My photography is a living, growing memoir, in colour and monochrome,
of my journey chasing the light. I'm a light catcher
Light that ever since the first nanosecond of the big bang still collate into galaxies and planets and stars and generates our universe at 299,792,458 m / s. In the light we finally see the light. And the light reflects in us. May the light that I caught in my photos also surprise you and leave you breathless. e = mc²! Together with light, I also love words - the two things that were present in the beginning - words because they create worlds and light because light is everything and everything is light! There is no better pastime than chasing the light with a camera! So, if I am not creating images with words, it's with my camera. I obtained an APSSA (Associate Member of the Photography Society of South Africa) in 2012. I focus on being as versatile as possible and developing my skills in almost all disciplines of photography. I recently also started working on conceptual photography and my composite images are also featured in my portfolio My first love is theatre, ballet and landscapes, but it can change as the light leads me. Lately I have been inspired by fellow photographers like Hein Waschefort, Charlaine Gerber and Martin Dudley to be more creative and that has now changed my focus and levels of passion for the light!

I have been carrying a camera around since the late 60's, my first camera being a Pentax Spotmatic.
After attending a workshop with the late great Sam Haskins at the
Rosebank Pentax club, I was hooked on studio work and portraiture.
I have my own home studio and love experimenting with different lighting setups. I also love street photography and architecture which I do exclusively in monochrome. Old or deserted buildings have a magical attraction for me. The majority of my studio work is also monochrome. I am striving to perfect my monochrome conversions.

I started off with this special hobby 20 odd years ago and have over the years enjoyed and tried all genres, including macro, monochrome, street, scapes, travel, studio amongst others. Being part of a club of passionate photographers has inspired me to be an adventurous photographer. Portraiture, and lately sports have captured my imagination, and have I been focusing on these. Being a sports woman myself and loving most sports I am passionate about capturing those special moments in a game, fight or race. The excitement of being so close to the action, and capturing the sportsperson at their very best, gives me great satisfaction and pleasure.I enjoy the challenge of sharpening my knowledge of each sport, and at the same time improving my photographic skills, and of course being at the right
place at the right time.Practicing photography, on a semi-professional level, it also remains a hobby I am passionate about -
capturing a special moment in time, brings me great joy.

I have not had any formal schooling in Photography but with 40 years of printing in both Repro, Colour and Quality Assurance, it complemented my interest in this art form. The digital world generated new excitement for me and under the school of rather brutal knock's was guided by my biggest influence Steve Bailey. I lean towards B&W and my interest is primarily people and emotions, including quirky images and abstracts.

Sandra is an amateur photographer who started to take photos when her boy played golf at a young age, taking action shots of the young golfers and creating composites for them of different actions shots. Her passion for photography exploded when she started to notice the unseen creations around her.
Sandra realized time stands still in stolen moments of unseen wonders and beauty through photography.
She loves close up art photos, flower and wildlife photography. She has a collection of fairies and love to photograph them and to create a fantasy world for them in her photography.

My passion is wildlife, a genre that entails patience, perseverance and observance. To watch and understand animals behaviour is perhaps
the most rewarding.I also enjoy photographing most other genres and dabble in the creative genre of photography,
experimenting, and trying to create something different. It is an honour to be included in this most awesome book, thankyou Hein Waschefort.
Shane Wilken
My love for photography began when I was around 6/7 years old. Always carrying my late Dads old Kodak Starmite camera that I still have to this day.I was never driven to study photography but never the less I always carried a small camera where ever I went and clicked away.
Photography only became a passion of mine from 2014 when I started taking walks in the Botanical Gardens of Roodepoort and began photographing the Verreaux"s eagles with a bridge camera..As this passion grew stronger I invested in more of the state of the art equipment and started photographing more wild life and nature around me and then moved on to portraiture photography through a modelling agency.I fell in love with the creative style of photography and began taking it more seriously now.
Photography is the medium of choice in how I express my creative style.
I am excited about the power and magic of photography to capture my very own unique selective perception of the moment in a form that I can share my story with those that do not have an opportunity that I do.

During the time I spent working at Sherlock Holmes Photographic & Colour Master Photo Lab I was fortunate to have been involved with and able to work with many of the extraordinary creative people within the Advertising and Photographic Industry.
It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, however - no matter how wonderful - Technology - Photoshop - Corel and computers are - An idea or an image that is poorly conceived, - focused - lit and exposed - may need more than a thousand words or hours to fix and explain.
My favourite saying “Technology is a tool -
Imagination is real power”
I am currently working on a book called, Alchemy of a Different Kind, which is a light-hearted look at the past 40 odd years of my life as a “commercial photographer” - Conceived in a dark room and raised in the studio of life.

My late dad, Max gave me a SIX-20 Brownie'D Kodak camera while on a weekend away when I was 10 years old . When I matriculated I bought a Minolta X-700 35 mm which I used until digital became the new way of photography. It took me some time before I got into it and through mentors, photography has become a way of life and I am continuing to learn and improve all the time.Art was also a great interest of mine in various mediums, including Oil painting, water colors and pencil sketches, with Portraiture being my main interest, But don't have much time for that anymore. My favorite form of photography is Wildlife and Lifestyle, but I'll photograph whatever is put in front of me. I enjoy posting on VSS and certainly find it inspiring and encouraging viewing all the amazing contributions.

Susan van Wyk
Retired admin clerk, part time photographer, full time granny, living in the North West Province.I have always loved the arts, dabbing in sketching, drama, photography and guitar playing, but the demands of being a mother and wife left little time or the means, to pursue any of those passions fully. As my children began leaving home, I started working and discovered the making of Bobbin Lace. I had a very basic camera that I used to take macro photos of antique lace, to see how it was made. Thus my love of macro photography was established.I later bought a DSLR camera and attended a wide variety of courses at DPC Photography,I have now retired and finally have the time to indulge in my love of the arts; combining many of them in Art Photography, to feed my soul and express the dreams of my youth.I see myself as a perennial student of photography.I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to participate on the VSS forum. The critique and guidance given is invaluable to me as a novice art photographer.I thank you.

Non-Professional photographer, married 60 year old granny residing in Hillcrest, KZN.A member of the Hillcrest Camera Club for 3 years, photography is my hobby and passion. I am constantly learning and experimenting with camera settings.Love being creative and travelling as much as our finances permit.I thoroughly enjoy the creative side of photography with the
endless possibilities of editing. For this Coke Can image, I took a photo of a discarded, crumpled coke can and snapped a few variations, then superimposed the same can in different positions. The black background is a separate edited: photo of skyscrapers in New York. This creates a geometric, abstract background to contrast the red coke cans. The “spill” I created using oil, and then I inverted the coke can during editing and superimposed it onto the oil to manipulate a 'reflection'.

Photography to Valerie is such an absorbing pastime bringing great joy when a creation is achieved.A Kodak Box camera began a 60 year passion.
Armed with a Pentax Point and shoot, a trip to Disneyworld in Orlando Florida U.S.A. used up 22 rolls of film. Mickey Mouse was just so enchanting. This was the signal to migrate to a DSLR.
Most embarrassing moment was when a group of us were shooting at the Nan Hua temple and at lunchtime the Monks locked the gate. Everyone had departed but dear Valerie was still happily clicking away at every little detail. Talk about a red face!Camera in hand….and Time simply disappears.

Valmai le Grange
Full time veterinarian and part time hunter of "pretty pictures"
Valmai has been involved with animals and nature her whole life. She developed a passion for photography later in life and love to dabble in all genres. But her first love for all God's creatures; great and small, will always prevail, also in photography. She enjoys the freedom of manipulated images and loves to bring fantasy into her work. The passion for photography led to a new freedom, and that is the freedom to travel. And THAT led to the hobby of observation of people, and especially observing how people treat animals.
Your true soul will be exposed by how you treat all Gods creatures;
great and small.

Veronica Coetzer
After a serious illness, South African wildlife and portrait photographer Veronica Coetzer felt she had lost everything. Having expressed herself through her photography for more than 40 years, suddenly, she was forced to put the camera down. What emerged was a completely new form of surrealist expression, through which she removes images from their original context and reassembles them within a paradoxical and sometimes shocking framework. Her art is an exploration of dreams, personal visions and experiences, fears, and
desires, and is a mechanism for healing, evoking a broad range of emotions in viewers.
“Veronica's photography is a tribute to her depth of experience and artistic ingenuity that will earn her well-earned accolades in
the world of photography.” Written by Beth Duncan (WISN) Quote by Carnie Mattisonn

Photography is the only language that can be understood anywhere in the world - Bruno Barbey
From a very young age I have always been interested in the arts, from sketching cartoons at school, using different paint techniques for art class and dabbling in other kind of art forms after school. Unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to study further as I was brought up in a single parent home.
However after having picked up my first DSLR camera about 6 years ago, I was able to combine my art with photography. I can spend hours on an image, playing with layers, brush strokes, overlays etc to get the desired effect I want.
The genres of photography that I am most passionate about are,
capturing the innocence of children, dance and of course animals.
