WIRING DIAGRAM
Figure 2 shows the typical wiring diagram for Tecumseh IntelliCI™ when operating with an electronic thermostat in the application. In this configuration, the thermostat’s input voltage must be connected directly to the AC power. Cycling the AC input power of the inverter is not recommended. The thermostat’s speed control output cable is connected to the inverter frequency input connection (CN3). The thermostat’s output signal polarity must be in accordance to the appropriate input connector polarity (See figure 1 for details). The arrow indicates the positive pole of the signal (+). There is a jumped thermal protection input (CN5) on the inverter board. Remove jumper if connecting to a customer provided overload. Refer to DEMX0056 drawing for more details. Additional circuitry for electromagnetic interference (EMI) filtering may be required depending on applicable standards regarding final application.
Figure 3 shows the typical wiring diagram for the Tecumseh IntelliCI™ when operating with an ordinary on/off thermostat. In this configuration, the thermostat’s input voltage must be connected directly to the main AC power. Cycling the AC input power of the inverter is not recommended. The output voltage must be connected to the TAL (Tecumseh Adaptive Logic) input connector (CN2) of the inverter.
Never service, repair or troubleshoot unless you are qualified to perform these functions.Improper servicing can lead to serious injury or death from fire, electrical shock or explosion.
WARNING!

A three-phase connection supplies power to the VTC compressor. There is a cluster terminal to avoid phase misconnection between the inverter and the compressor wiring, and the recommended position of the cluster terminal is indicated in Figure 8 and in Table 1.
Figure 7 – Cable and three-phase connector
Table 1 – Compressor/inverter connection
Figure 8 – Compressor complete connection
Cable specification
The output cable of the inverter is comprised of three individual cables, each one with a distinct color to identify each motor phase. The cable colors and the related connector pins position are described in Table 1. All the cables are 18 AWG stranded UL approved cable with PVC insulation rated for 105°C and 600V. This cable is supplied with the inverter and must not be modified. Any modification can result in safety issues such as electrical shock, fire or increased EMI levels.
Connector specification
The cluster terminal block used in the inverter output connection is an Amphenol 1380145-2 or Tyco 1380145-1 (see Figure 8). Plastic material is PBT Valox 310-SE0. The cable terminals are the Tyco 1599105 compatible with 18 AWG cables. This connector is supplied with the inverter and must not be modified. Any modification can damage the compressor.

VTC SERIES COMPRESSOR INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
The inverter must be assembled vertically on the refrigeration system unit mounting base (see Figure 9). The heat sink must have a forced air flow of at least 3m/s, parallel to its fins (see Figure 18).
Inverter enclosure parts
Inverter enclosure is comprised of a plastic enclosure and an aluminum heat sink (see Figure 10). Four screws are used to hold the inverter vertically in the refrigeration system unit mounting base (see screw specification section for details). The inverter label is on its enclosure and has the main information about inverter ratings, part number and agency approvals (see label and inverter section for more details).

VTC SERIES COMPRESSOR INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
The compressor should be assembled as the final step before attaching it to the system mounting base to avoid damaging the inverter enclosure. The mounting brackets on its back cover should not be used. The label should be visible and the tubes and the cables should be placed in a way that they are accessible from the label side.
It is important to highlight the need of forced air flowing through the inverter heat-sink fins of at least 3m/s. (see Figure 18).
The proper placement of the inverter and compressor in the refrigeration system unit mounting base must be in accordance with the recommendations given before in this section.

Inverter attachment process
Once the compressor is properly mounted in the refrigeration system mounting base, the inverter can be attached vertically to the mounting base in accordance to the previous considerations of the recommended placement and wiring connections (see 2 and Figure 3). The inverter and the compressor must be disconnected from the powerline.
COMPRESSOR AND INVERTER ASSEMBLING
12
VTC SERIES COMPRESSOR INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
The Tecumseh IntelliCI™ inverter is assembled with four screws with the same specification. They are stainless steel self-tapping screws with Philips pan head and washer. The screws have 3.5 mm diameter and 15.87 mm length. Recommended driver size is #2. Recommended torque for screws is 0.8 Nm (7.1 lb.in).
The inverter detachment from the unit mounting base may be needed during maintenance procedure. To detach the inverter connector from the compressor, make sure the appliance is disconnected from the power source for at least one minute before starting the detachment process.
The user must open the inverter enclosure to access the powerline and signal terminals as indicated in Figure 20. The snaps should be properly handled and the right tool must be used for this operation. Refer to Strain Relief Assembly section for details.
The wires for powerline and control input should follow the proper routing (see Figure 19).

SIGNAL CABLE CONNECTION
The inverter has a 3 positions PCB terminal block connector for powerline input (CN1). The wires must be fastened in each connector terminal (see Figure 20).
Connection remarks
It is recommended to double check the inverter powerline input connection and assure there is a robust connection following the maximum recommended torque of 0.4 Nm for the connector screws.
Cable specifications for power input
Recommended cable specification is 14 AWG standard, UL approved cable with PVC insulation rated for 105° C and 600V. It can be a three-way cable with outer jacket, maximum external diameter of 9.6 mm.
Cable specification for frequency input
The recommended cable specifications are 24 AWG standard UL approved cable with PVC insulation rated for 105°C.
Cable specification for TAL input
The recommended cable specifications are 18 AWG standard UL approved cable with PVC insulation rated for 105°C and 600V.
Cable specification for thermal protection input
The recommended cable specifications are 24 AWG standard UL approved cable with PVC insulation rated for 105°C.
Connector specification
The recommended connector for frequency control and thermal protection input cable is the Molex 70066-0176.
Connection remarks
The user must use only one mode of operation for the speed control command, “TAL” or frequency control. They should not be connected at the same time for proper operation. The thermal protection input is a normally closed input. So, if the additional thermal protector is not used, the thermal protection connector (CN5) pins must be bridged for the compressor proper operation.

Step #2
After opening the enclosure the back cover can be detached from the inverter box.
Step #3
All the terminals can be directly reached with the back cover detached from the
enclosure.
Step #5
The compressor wires must be properly routed and connected as indicated above.
Step #1
The user must unlock the four snaps properly to open the enclosure.
There are two snaps in the fence cover sides (see Figure 22). The fence cover must be detached from the compressor in order to connect the output power cable to the compressor. To open the protective fence cover, the user should use a screw driver to unlock the snaps properly.
