WIRING DIAGRAM

Figure 2 shows the typical wiring diagram for Tecumseh IntelliCI™ when operating with an electronic thermostat in the application. In this configuration, the thermostat’s input voltage must be connected directly to the AC power. Cycling the AC input power of the inverter is not recommended. The thermostat’s speed control output cable is connected to the inverter frequency input connection (CN3). The thermostat’s output signal polarity must be in accordance to the appropriate input connector polarity (See figure 1 for details). The arrow indicates the positive pole of the signal (+). There is a jumped thermal protection input (CN5) on the inverter board. Remove jumper if connecting to a customer provided overload. Refer to DEMX0056 drawing for more details. Additional circuitry for electromagnetic interference (EMI) filtering may be required depending on applicable standards regarding final application.

Figure 3 shows the typical wiring diagram for the Tecumseh IntelliCI™ when operating with an ordinary on/off thermostat. In this configuration, the thermostat’s input voltage must be connected directly to the main AC power. Cycling the AC input power of the inverter is not recommended. The output voltage must be connected to the TAL (Tecumseh Adaptive Logic) input connector (CN2) of the inverter.

Never service, repair or troubleshoot unless you are qualified to perform these functions.Improper servicing can lead to serious injury or death from fire, electrical shock or explosion.

Tecumseh IntelliCI™

Tecumseh IntelliCI™ ground terminal must be properly connected to the input power ground (see Figure 2 and Figure 3). The ground wire of the inverter’s motor output cable must be properly connected to the compressor ground terminal (see Figure 4 and Figure 5).

Cable specification

The inverter cable for compressor grounding is an 18 AWG stranded UL approved cable with PVC insulation rated for 105°C and 600V. The cable color is green with a yellow stripe. Figure 6 shows the inverter cable for the compressor grounding.

Connector specification

The connector used with the inverter cable for compressor grounding is a TE 62048-2 FASTON Reversible Flag receptacle (see Figure 6). Compressor terminal is a FASTON connector directly welded to the hermetic terminal protector (see Figure 5).

A three-phase connection supplies power to the VTC compressor. There is a cluster terminal to avoid phase misconnection between the inverter and the compressor wiring, and the recommended position of the cluster terminal is indicated in Figure 8 and in Table 1.

Cable specification

The output cable of the inverter is comprised of three individual cables, each one with a distinct color to identify each motor phase. The cable colors and the related connector pins position are described in Table 1. All the cables are 18 AWG stranded UL approved cable with PVC insulation rated for 105°C and 600V. This cable is supplied with the inverter and must not be modified. Any modification can result in safety issues such as electrical shock, fire or increased EMI levels.

Connector specification

The cluster terminal block used in the inverter output connection is an Amphenol 1380145-2 or Tyco 1380145-1 (see Figure 8). Plastic material is PBT Valox 310-SE0. The cable terminals are the Tyco 1599105 compatible with 18 AWG cables. This connector is supplied with the inverter and must not be modified. Any modification can damage the compressor.

The inverter must be assembled vertically on the refrigeration system unit mounting base (see Figure 9). The heat sink must have a forced air flow of at least 3m/s, parallel to its fins (see Figure 18).

Inverter enclosure parts

Inverter enclosure is comprised of a plastic enclosure and an aluminum heat sink (see Figure 10). Four screws are used to hold the inverter vertically in the refrigeration system unit mounting base (see screw specification section for details). The inverter label is on its enclosure and has the main information about inverter ratings, part number and agency approvals (see label and inverter section for more details).

The inverter has three cable entrances: powerline input, control input and compressor output (see Figure 11) and four snaps, two on the top and two on each side of the inverter box, as indicated on Figure 12.

It is recommended to attach the compressor in the final application mounting base before placing the inverter to avoid damaging the inverter device.

Compressor parts

The VTC compressor label is placed on the compressor side as shown in Figure 14. The label has information about the part number, compressor ratings and refrigerant type. Refer to the label section for more details.

Tubes

The compressor has three tubes for discharge, suction and process lines. The position of the tubes is illustrated in Figure 15 and their specification are described in Table 2. For more information refer to the drawings DCVTC052.

Compressor footprint

Figure 15 shows the dimensions of the VTC compressor. There is no provision for top mounted evaporating tray.

Compressor mounting brackets options

To give more flexibility to the refrigerator cabinet design, there are two options which can be used as compressor mounting brackets: European and universal. For more information refer to the drawings DCVTC052.

Additional grounding connection

In addition to the grounding connection provided by the inverter, there is another grounding connection available at the compressor mounting brackets (see Figure 16). This ground must be connected directly from the compressor bracket to the cabinet chassis.

The compressor should be assembled as the final step before attaching it to the system mounting base to avoid damaging the inverter enclosure. The mounting brackets on its back cover should not be used. The label should be visible and the tubes and the cables should be placed in a way that they are accessible from the label side.

It is important to highlight the need of forced air flowing through the inverter heat-sink fins of at least 3m/s. (see Figure 18).

The proper placement of the inverter and compressor in the refrigeration system unit mounting base must be in accordance with the recommendations given before in this section.

Inverter attachment process

Once the compressor is properly mounted in the refrigeration system mounting base, the inverter can be attached vertically to the mounting base in accordance to the previous considerations of the recommended placement and wiring connections (see 2 and Figure 3). The inverter and the compressor must be disconnected from the powerline.

The Tecumseh IntelliCI™ inverter is assembled with four screws with the same specification. They are stainless steel self-tapping screws with Philips pan head and washer. The screws have 3.5 mm diameter and 15.87 mm length. Recommended driver size is #2. Recommended torque for screws is 0.8 Nm (7.1 lb.in).

The inverter detachment from the unit mounting base may be needed during maintenance procedure. To detach the inverter connector from the compressor, make sure the appliance is disconnected from the power source for at least one minute before starting the detachment process.

The user must open the inverter enclosure to access the powerline and signal terminals as indicated in Figure 20. The snaps should be properly handled and the right tool must be used for this operation. Refer to Strain Relief Assembly section for details.

The wires for powerline and control input should follow the proper routing (see Figure 19).

The inverter has a 3 positions PCB terminal block connector for powerline input (CN1). The wires must be fastened in each connector terminal (see Figure 20).

Connection remarks

It is recommended to double check the inverter powerline input connection and assure there is a robust connection following the maximum recommended torque of 0.4 Nm for the connector screws.

Cable specifications for power input

Recommended cable specification is 14 AWG standard, UL approved cable with PVC insulation rated for 105° C and 600V. It can be a three-way cable with outer jacket, maximum external diameter of 9.6 mm.

Cable specification for frequency input

The recommended cable specifications are 24 AWG standard UL approved cable with PVC insulation rated for 105°C.

Cable specification for TAL input

The recommended cable specifications are 18 AWG standard UL approved cable with PVC insulation rated for 105°C and 600V.

Cable specification for thermal protection input

The recommended cable specifications are 24 AWG standard UL approved cable with PVC insulation rated for 105°C.

Connector specification

The recommended connector for frequency control and thermal protection input cable is the Molex 70066-0176.

Connection remarks

The user must use only one mode of operation for the speed control command, “TAL” or frequency control. They should not be connected at the same time for proper operation. The thermal protection input is a normally closed input. So, if the additional thermal protector is not used, the thermal protection connector (CN5) pins must be bridged for the compressor proper operation.

The TAL or frequency control wires must be properly routed.

The cables must be routed into the box as indicated in Figure 19.

The recommended procedure for opening the inverter enclosure and routing the input cables is indicated below.

After opening the enclosure the back cover can be detached from the inverter box.

Step #3

All the terminals can be directly reached with the back cover detached from the

enclosure.

Step #5

The compressor wires must be properly routed and connected as indicated above.

Step #1

The user must unlock the four snaps properly to open the enclosure.

There are two snaps in the fence cover sides (see Figure 22). The fence cover must be detached from the compressor in order to connect the output power cable to the compressor. To open the protective fence cover, the user should use a screw driver to unlock the snaps properly.

Compressor connection

The following procedure describes how the compressor connection and attachment of the fence cover must be done.

Step #1

The fence cover should be off the compressor.

Step #4The strain relief screw must be attached

to the fence cover and torqued to the screw specification.

be similar to the figure above.

Connect the three-phase and grounding connectors to the compressor terminals.

Screw Specification

The strain relief screw is a self-tapping screw with Philips head. The screw have 3.5 mm diameter and 25 mm length. Recommended driver size is #1. Recommended torque for the screw is 0.8 Nm (7.1 lb.in).
