as to balance Houses in terms of subject areas and numbers.n M House students (incoming 10th and 11th graders) are being reassigned to remaining Houses. M House students were given an opportunity to rank, in order of preference, their choice of placement, which is being considered but not guaranteed.n One M House advisor remains with M House, assigned to M House seniors only. The other M House advisor has been replaced by a returning advisor, who is assigned to S House. S House has 3 advisors, one of whom is assigned to S House seniors only. The advisors who carry only seniors in their workload have other student support duties.P TSA President Elizabeth Gelfand Stearns calls upon all parents to offer continued support and flexibility through these challenging times: We are going to work with volunteer parents from each House to create a welcoming environment and ensure that this transition is as smooth as possible for all of the Samohi community.

Santa Monica Arts Parents Association (SMAPA)

T he Santa Monica Band Parents Association has played an invaluable role in the growth of Samohis outstanding music programs, including band, orchestra and choir, for over 40 years. The nonprofit organization was recently restructured to fully represent participating programs, as reflected by its new name: Santa Monica Arts Parents Association (SMAPA). Under the umbrella of SMAPA, parent associa-tions will continue to independently support band, orchestra, choir and theatre. Each of these groups selected their representative, and these four parent leaders comprise the new Board of SMAPA, which was ratified at a meeting of all participating programs on Tuesday, June 16 in the Samohi cafeteria. They are: Helen Weary (Band), Cathy Davies (Orchestra), Patti Braun (Choir) and Cyndy Turnage (Theatre). By acting as a bridge between parents, staff and adminis-tration, SMAPA is dedicated to help foster and maintain quality arts programs in our school.

PTSA Annual Giving Support for All Samohi Students

Y our Annual Giving helps all Samohi students with support ranging from purchase of classroom supplies for every teacher to giving grants to all departments and houses, keeping the library open after school and providing after school tutoring. After discussions with teachers and staff last year, the PTSA Annual Giving Campaign focused on raising funds for much-needed technology tools for every classroom at Samohi. The Annual Giving Campaign just purchased 20 laptops for teachers and 8 LCD/Elmo cart packages for classrooms. Please participate this year! All contributions are 100% tax deductible. Our goal is to have 100% participation by Samohi families. Please make checks payable to Samohi PTSA, and mail to Santa Monica High School, attn: PTSA, 601 Pico Boulevard, Santa Monica, CA 90405.

Initial funding for Samohi Civic Center Joint Use Project

O n May 12, Santa Monicas Redevelopment Agency (RDA), allocated $57 million to begin the Civic Center Joint Use Project (CCJUP), which is the second component of Samohis master plan to completely overhaul the campus facilities and make it a school to be proud of in the 21st Century. The first compo-nent, a new Science and Technology building, will commence in late 2010 and is funded by Bond Measure BB, passed by voters in 2006.The initial stage of the CCJUP will replace Samohis existing baseball fields, tennis courts and basketball courts with a new lighted synthetic turf football field (can be used for rugby /soccer/lacrosse) and CIF-regulation track, 2000-seat stadium, field house and concession stands. A new landscaped Michigan Avenue Promenade between 7th and 4th Streets for pedestrian and bicycle access will also be created. The 6th Street circle driveway (from Olympic) will move east to accommodate the field. Additional funding is being sought for the next two stages: (1) new gyms, indoor pool and soccer field and (2) new softball and baseball fields.

Bring Summer Reading books to the beach!

D ont let your kids wait until September to get their required reading done. What better way to spend a lazy summer after-noon than reading a great book? The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time is a funny, bittersweet, award-winning gem. And most students can read any other book theyd like. For a list of suggested titles, plus senior and honors requirements, visit www.samohi.smmusd.org/reading/.

    Summer Freshman Camp

T he first day of school can be very stressful for enter ing freshmen and their parents. Recognizing that we can help alleviate those first day jitters, our student leaders have planned a camp-like day on Monday, August 24, 2009, from 9:001:00 p.m. at Barnum Hall, to get to know our incoming freshmen, provide them with their class schedules, team-build by House and provide information to help them start their first day with confidence. Please reserve this date for your incoming freshman to join other students and staff for this opportu nity to have fun together, meet members of their House, and make new friends. Invitations will be mailed in early summer. There will be a parent meet-ing held right after the 9:00 general session to answer questions parents may have for their House principal.

    Class drop dates

W ithin the first three weeks of the semester, students may drop a course by meeting with their advisor to discuss the impact of such a decision. Dropping a class during the fourth and fifth week of the semester may only be done with House review. Drops during weeks six through eight must be approved by the Appeals Committee. No drops will be permitted after the ninth week of the semester.

Be safe or be cited: Vehicles ticketed around Samohi

S amohi and the Santa Monica Police Department are working together to promote the safety of your students, families and staff.

    Is yours a two-household family?

I n some families, a student may live in more than one residence, such as divorced/separated parents with shared custody. One parent should already be receiving phone dialer messages and school and PTSA mailings like The Viking Voice. However, both parents may receive them, if desired. If you are interested, contact your House office to find out what documentation is needed.

    Tardy Policy

A ll students are expected to arrive to every class on time. Late students will meet with Samohi staff who will implement a progressive discipline policy. Consequences include parent/guardian contact, detention, Saturday school, and in school-suspension. Parents may be asked to attend conferences with faculty or school with their child. Students with a pattern of excessive truancy will be referred to the School Attendance Review Board. Students attending Samohi with a permit or affidavit may have either revoked for violating the attendance portion of the agreements.
