PSAT (Preliminary SAT) to be held at Samohi

S amohi will be offering the PSAT on campus on Saturday, October 16. This is an impor-tant chance to see where students stand

as they prepare for the SATs, and this is also the test that will qualify juniors for National Merit Scholarship consideration. The test costs $28 (for students who receive free/reduced lunch the cost is $15). Sign-ups will be available at Regis-tration, or in the O House office H209. For more information contact: Tomita Glover at ext. 71289, [email protected].

Samohi athletes: Show up for summer conditioning and practices!

S ummer has just begun, but training for the Samohi athletic program is already underway. If your student would like to

participate in a sport at Samohi, you need to know about summer conditioning and practices for fall and winter sports. Check out Samohi’s website (www.samohi.smmusd.org) to find what you need to know about athletics.

The link to Samohi Athletics can lead you to a wealth of information about clearance proce-dures, deadlines, coaches’ emails, schedules and directions to games. You can also download the necessary forms for athletic clear ance. Click onto www.samohi.smmusd.org/Activities/sports/index.htm for details. The deadline to submit completed medical clearance forms for fall sports is coming up before school starts, so make your physician appointments and down load your forms now!

Some sports, such as Water Polo and Soccer, offer their own websites that can be accessed from the Athletics homepage. If you have ques-tions, contact Samohi’s new Athletic Director Daniel Escalera at [email protected] or his assistant Kathy Fargnoli at [email protected]. Go Vikings!!

PTSA Annual Giving — support for all Samohi students

A nnual Giving is the only PTSA fundraising for school-wide academic support, which helps all Samohi students— from the

purchase of classroom supplies for every teacher to giving grants to all departments and houses, keeping the library open after school and provid-ing after school tutoring.

After discussions with teachers and staff, the PTSA Annual Giving Campaign focused on raising funds for much-needed technology tools for every classroom at Samohi. We’ve purchased laptops for teachers and LCD/Elmo cart packages for all Math classrooms. Now PTSA is in the midst of acquiring equipment for Science classrooms. The English Department will be next.

Please participate this year! All contribu-tions are 100% tax deductible as permitted by law. Our goal is to have 100% participation by Samohi families. Please make checks payable to Samohi PTSA, and mail to Santa Monica High School, attn: PTSA, 601 Pico Boulevard, Santa Monica, CA 90405.

You can donate online: www.samohi.smmusd.org/PTSA/Annualgiving. Don’t wait!

Summer Reading 2010

D on’t wait until September to start! It’s time for all Samohi students to find out what the world looks like through the

eyes of a child soldier, by reading A Long Way Gone, an amazing memoir by Ishmael Beah. Students also are to pick a free choice book. In addition, HP/AP students have a third required book. For a list of suggested titles, plus honors and AP requirements, visit www.samohi.smmusd.org/reading/.

If you don’t already have the All-Samo Book, it will be available for purchase at registration. Encourage your student to make time to read a daily half-hour, and discuss the book with your student. Summer reading improves reading ability, writing, thinking and understanding of people and the world.

Daniel Escalera: new Samohi Athletic Director

C oach Daniel Escalera is the new Athletic Director for Santa Monica High School and the CIF representative. Mr. Escalera

follows Norm Lacy, who suddenly and tragically passed away in May. Mr. Escalera has coached football and baseball for thirty-six years as head coach of football at St. Monica’s and Samo high schools, assistant coach at Samohi, Loyola High in Los Angeles (2005 CIF Championship), Venice, University and St. Monica High Schools. He also coached at SMC and Cal State Northridge, one of the highest pass offensive colleges in the country.

Escalera believes that athletics can “enrich a student’s experience and provide an additional set of mentoring eyes for the student-athlete. Students learn … discipline, hard work, perse-verance, goal setting, team work, sacrifice, and school pride – all things that translate into the classroom, … enhancing their academic success.” Mr. Escalera said he feels honored to direct one of the largest and most successful sports programs on the Westside. “We are blessed with an amazing coaching staff that is supported by the district, community, faculty, and parents.” His goals include “maintaining and exceeding the current level of athletic success at Samohi, allowing student-athletes to be proud of their contribu-tions, and legacy to Samohi and SMMUSD.”

New house principals for O and I Houses

W elcome Ms. Clara Herran and Ms. Renée Semik to their new positions as House Principals at Samohi!

Ms. Herran comes to lead O House from Susan Miller Dorsey High School, where she was assis-tant principal for the past four years. Ms. Herran also has experience as an instructional special-ist, Title I coordinator, and social science teacher. She was part of a collaborative team that designed and implemented the plan for a Small Learning Community (SLC) for Career and Technical Arts (CTA). Under her leadership, the high school improved school-to-home communi-cation, vertical lesson planning in social sciences, and student behavior.

Ms. Semik is bringing her leadership to a new role at Samohi as the head of I House. She previously taught social studies at Samohi for five years. Prior to that, she taught in Saipan, Common wealth of the Northern Mariana Islands; Cleveland, OH; and Nashville, TN. As a teacher leader in Cleveland and at Samohi, she provided support to new teachers, planned professional development, and facilitated Instructional Plan-ning Committee (IPC) meetings.

Escalera as SAMOHI’s Athletic Director.I wish you all a wonderful summer and look

forward to meeting new and returning families at our first PTSA meeting of the year on Tuesday, September 14 at 7 pm in the Cafeteria. Until then, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or suggestions that you might have at [email protected]

Site Governance focus

S amohi’s Site Council brings together staff, students, parents and administrators to focus on the state mandated Single

Plan for Student Achievement for the school. Each year the Site Council considers ways to lift student achievement, set goals for the school as a whole, and for defined groups of students. With Site Council’s achievement gap focus, there have been significant gains in student achieve-ment across the school over the last five years, in particular, amongst African American and Latino students. Starting the first day of school, and continuing through 9/13, parents will be able to vote to fill 4 parent seats on Site Council. The slate is in your registration packet; winners will be announced at the first PTSA meeting of this school year.

Summer Orientation

T he first day of school can be very stressful for entering freshmen and their parents. Recognizing that we can help alleviate

those first day jitters, our student leaders have planned a camp-like day on Thursday, August 19, from 9:00 a.m.–noon. at Barnum Hall, to get to know our incoming freshmen, provide them with their class schedules, team-build by House and provide information to help them start their first day with confidence. Please reserve this date for your incoming freshman to join other students and staff for this opportunity to have fun together, meet members of their House, and make new friends. Invitations were mailed in early summer. After the 9:00 general session, there will be a parent meeting to answer ques-tions parents may have for their House principal.

Delians Honor Society California Scholarship Federation (CSF)

T o be a member of Delians, students are required to complete five hours per semester of community service and turn

in a typewritten application the day of Delian regis tration (in September) along with registra-tion dues. There is no fee if students are on Free or Reduced lunch. More information at Samohi’s website, Students/Delians–Honor Society (samohi.smmusd.org/delians/).

WASC Self Study Process

S amohi is participating in the Joint W.A.S.C. (Western Association of Schools and Colleges)/C.D.E. (California Department of

Education) Self Study Process, which examines student knowledge and abilities. This process helps identify and implement necessary school improvements and supports accountability, a critical part of the accreditation process. Parent feedback is vital. In your registration packet, look for the Parent Survey and please take the time to respond. We’re counting on your help.

Class drop dates

W ithin the first three weeks of the semester, students may drop a course by meeting with their advisor to

discuss the impact of such a decision. Dropping a class during the fourth and fifth week of the semester may only be done with House review. Drops during weeks six through eight must be approved by the Appeals Committee.

No drops will be permitted after the ninth week of the semester.

Be safe or be cited: Vehicles ticketed around Samohi

S amohi and the Santa Monica Police Department are working together to promote the safety of your students, families and staff.

Is yours a two-household family?

I n some families, a student may live in more than one residence, such as divorced/separated parents with shared custody. One

parent should already be receiving phone dialer messages and school and PTSA mailings like The Viking Voice.

However, both parents may receive them, if desired. If you are interested, contact your House office to find out what documentation is needed.

Tardy policy

A ll students are expected to arrive to every class on time. Late students will meet with Samohi staff who will implement

a progressive discipline policy. Consequences include parent/guardian contact, detention, Saturday school, and in school-suspension. Parents may be asked to attend conferences with faculty or school with their child. Students with a pattern of excessive truancy will be referred to the School Attendance Review Board. Students attending Samohi with a permit or affidavit may have either revoked for violating the attendance portion of the agreements.

Bike It! Day, October 6

S amohi is bike friendly and a bike leader. Santa Monica will see why during the year’s first Bike It! Day, October 6. After

successful innovation at Samohi last year, Bike It! Day has now spread from Samohi across the whole SMMUSD district. Every school in Santa Monica now has Bike It! Day. Every student is following the call to walk, bus or bike to school.

Over 1500 students, left their cars at home in May. Half the school. The City of Santa Monica and the SM Police supported the event strongly, sponsors signed up (Coffee Bean, Evolution Juice) and the idea exploded that environmental change springs from single acts. Like riding a bike.

Samohi Solar Alliance leads the day on our campus. Support their efforts. Get your students to make a change. Get them to ride their bike.

Richard McKinnon, Bike It! Day Chair, [email protected]

Is your phone number or address changing?

I f so, please let the Samohi Attendance Office know ASAP what your new contact informa-tion is – there are several important mail ings

going to parents in July and August from the District offices, so having your accurate, current address and phone number is essential!

Contact Dina Mendoza at (310) 395-3204 or [email protected].

Want to know how your student is doing? Check Pinnacle online

P innacle is an online recording system that is used by all Samohi teachers to calculate student grades.

It is available to parents and students and is a wonderful tool for monitoring classroom progress. To check your student’s grades you need their student ID number and PIN code. (PIN codes are printed on progress reports; freshmen can get their PIN code from their house advisor.)

To use Pinnacle:1. Go to www.samohi.smmusd.org

2. Click on the tab labeled Parent Info

3. Click on Student Grade Access and follow the directionsWe recommend that you and your student

get into the habit of checking Pinnacle at least weekly. You will be surprised at what a difference it can make!

How to contact teachers and staff members

C ommunication with your child’s teach-ers is strongly encouraged, and the staff is committed to responding in a timely

manner. If you want to contact one of your student’s teachers, we ask that you first do so through either voice mail or email. All Samohi staff have both.

To leave a message by voice mail:Dial (310) 395-3204. If you know the exten-

sion, enter it. For a directory of staff members’ extensions by name, dial 8.

To reach an operator during school hours, dial 0.

To leave a message by email:Staff addresses are formatted like this:

<FirstInitial><LastName>@smmusd.org — for example: [email protected].

The complete staff directory, listing phone extensions and email addresses, is provided on the website at www.samohi.smmusd.org
