As I sit here contemplating the end of my tenure as Samohi’s PTSA President, I have many mixed
emotions. While I am ready to move on to the next step in my life, as my young-est child graduates from the SMMUSD family, I am conscious of the changes that I will encounter. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to be the voice of the parents for the last two years.

Intensive Intervention Summer School at Samohi
A s the school year winds down, it is time for many of our students to begin thinking about summer school to make up credits.
Intensive Intervention Summer School will be available this year for SMMUSD students who did not pass a course needed for graduation. We are currently planning to offer;
n English 9-11n Geometryn Algebra 1 & 2n Biologyn Chemistryn Health
n World Historyn US Historyn Economicsn Governmentn Physical Education
All student advisers are putting in requests for summer school based on student’s earned grades throughout their high school careers. Students in upper grades will have priority enrollment, followed by students earning a fail in a course. Letters confirming enrollment in summer school will go out the week of June 18th.
Summer school will begin on Monday, June 25, 2012 and run through Tuesday, July 31, 2012. There will be no school on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 in observance of the Independence Day holiday.
Classes are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 –12:35 (Period 1: 8:00-10:05, Period 2: 10:20–12:35). Attendance is critical to student success. Therefore, students cannot begin summer school after the third day, Friday, June 29, 2012. Students who do not show up for the first day of summer school may be dropped. Any student who misses more than three days of any summer school course will be dropped from the course. Eight times tardy to any course is considered a full day of absence in the course and counts toward to the total number of absences.
R emember, that the second semester is just as important as the first. Keep your grades up! As testing season is upon
us, make sure that you’re managing your time properly so you don’t become overwhelmed. One tip is to spread out big projects into smaller chunks to manage them better. If you have a big test coming up, break up your study sessions for that too. And if you need help, make sure to talk to your teachers, and take advantage of tutoring!
Advisors will be visiting JAMS, Lincoln and SMASH for incoming 9th grade presentations and parent meetings.
Mental Health Services at School
S amohi is fortunate to have on-site, school-based mental health services, offering help that includes crisis intervention;
support for teen parents and their children; individual, couple and group therapy; and therapy to strengthen family relationships. Additionally, there is support for students to overcome social and emotional barriers to learning, to improve coping skills and to reduce mental health symptoms that may affect quality of life in and out of school.
Students can be referred by an advisor, teacher or nurse. For help, parents or students can contact a school advisor, who can refer the student to a coordinator and a therapist from the on-site mental health services. Since there are a limited number of at-school counseling openings, priority for services on campus is given to students who may not be able to access community-based services. The school-based therapist will reach out to the parents to connect the student and family to services that best meet their needs, either on campus or at one of many community-based agencies.

CONSTRUCTION ON CAMPUS
Trees—A Samohi Primer
S anta Monica High School was built in 1913 on our current 26-acre site. Historical photography shows a campus
covered with trees of many varieties that made their home on our campus. Over the decades, the footprint and topography has changed along with the landscape. Trees were moved to make room for buildings and other necessary expansions and as a result our shaded space has become more limited.
2012 has ushered in a big change at Samohi, the ground has broken on our new state-of-the-art Innovation Building, the future home of the I House classrooms and science labs. Wrap-ping around the 97,000 square foot Innovation Building, will be the Centennial Quad—a major hardscape and landscape area that will feature
multi-use outdoor gather-ing and meeting spaces, lunch areas, and shaded space. Trees will play a central role in this Centen-nial Quad area – and the entire community has a wonderful opportunity to get involved and support this 100-year milestone on our campus.
Beginning this fall, we will launch a campaign to bring as many trees as possible into this area. Families will have the opportu-nity to help support this process by funding the purchase of trees in their student or class name. As the class of 2013 will be the 100th graduating class on this site, this is a very special way to commemorate this important moment in time and also honor your student. There will be a donor wall erected so that your gift to the high school will be a lasting one for all to see for generations to come.

Proposed initiatives for November vote
A s parents and volunteers in our kids’ schools, no matter how hard we work to fundraise at the local level, we see
firsthand the effects of declining state education funding: overcrowded schools with class sizes higher than the national average, and a constant struggle in our district to keep librarians, art, music and physical education programs intact (while so many districts have already seen them disappear).
Because the state has failed to adequately fund our schools, parents have had to work hard to help fill that gap, but the need is too great, and the investment is too important to depend on school fundraisers.
This year, there are two statewide ballot initia-tives making their way through the signature-gathering process for a place on the November statewide ballot.
The Schools and Local Public Safety Protection Act of 2012 http://www.ProtectSchoolsAndPublicSafety.org/ is proposed by Governor Brown. It would amend the state’s constitution to realign state funding to local governments for incarceration costs and increase income and sales taxes for seven years, after which it would expire. The purpose of the governor’s proposal is to help close what seems to be a chronic state budget deficit and minimize cuts to state-funded programs, including education.
The other statewide ballot measure, Our Children, Our Future (OCOF), http://OurChildrenOurFuture2012.com/, is proposed by Molly Munger, a civil rights attorney and founder of The Advancement Project, a nonprofit children’s advocacy organization based in Los Angeles. The purpose of Our Children, Our Future is to target funding to every school to restore education programs that have been cut, to reduce class size and to invest in new programs. In addition, this measure provides additional funding for the improvement of, and increased access to, preschool programs. It would institute a graduated income tax increase for 12 years, after which it could be renewed by a majority statewide vote. Our Children, Our Future would also provide funds to help close the state’s budget deficit.
By June, we should know if either or both of these measures will actually appear on the November ballot.

the Education Foundation to the PTA Council, I have spent my time advocating and fundraising, politicking and supporting. It has been frustrating and inspirational, difficult but gratifying. I encourage each and every one of you to partici-pate in the institution that is the SMMUSD and specifically Samohi. This school succeeds because of the dedication of its administration, teachers, staff and PARENTS.
In these difficult financial times, we as parents can add a measure of involvement that is a neces-sary and vital part of the school, even at the high school level. And while dollars are the easiest way to contribute and definitely necessary, they are not the only thing you can do. Cheer for your student, help out in the textbook room, attend a PTSA meeting, help in your student’s house office. We can be the difference between an average and an excellent experience for all our students.
As one door closes, another opens. We are fortunate to welcome Lisa Balfus as Samohi’s incoming PTSA President. Lisa has years of
volunteer commitment to our schools, the District and Samohi. We all can feel thankful that our school and students will be in such capable hands. This year, many incred-ible leaders at Samohi are parents of graduating seniors. While they will
be a huge loss, there will be opportunities for other parents. From leadership to support, from a couple hours a day to an hour a month, at school, or at home—there is a place for you to be involved with Samohi. Email Lisa Balfus at [email protected]. She’d love to hear from you.

New Habits Keep our Students Safe
T raffic patterns around Samohi have become almost routine. Thank you to everyone who has changed their patterns to keep
our students safe. The City parking signs are now installed on Seventh Street. The first 90 feet off of Michigan Avenue is for Bus Loading and the remainder of Seventh Street is signed for loading and unloading before 9 am and after 3 pm. Two hour parking on Seventh Street is available from 9 am –3 pm, except on Wednesdays when two hour parking is available from 12 pm–3 pm.
During every meeting on campus there is a pedestrian gate open behind the Cafeteria for families using the bus stop on Pico Boulevard. Also students may use this gate 30 minutes after school. Please do not jump the wall.
M arathon runners, despite having put in over two hours of distance running, despite having 20+ miles in their wake,
end the race with a kick! Somehow, somewhere they find that little extra bit of energy, of focus, of determination to not just finish, but finish strong! With six weeks remaining and CST, AP, and CAHSEE testing all behind us, the true challenge now is to remain focused for the final six weeks. We look forward to helping you stay on track for graduation and stay focused for the long haul. Summer school will bring many of you back on campus. The S House would like to thank all of you for the support through your time here, and dona-tions made to our wonderful student celebrations.
We would like to say Fare Thee Well! to all of our Seniors. You have left your mark on Samohi for future generations. We will genuinely miss you all, and wish you years of continued success in your lives. Remember that each day, and every decision, counts. That nothing was ever gained that was easy. Encourage your child to maintain good attendance, make good choices, and do their best in all courses. There is no substitute for hard work. Don’t ever quit.
I n this, the last newsletter of the year, I would like to thank those who have worked tire-lessly over the year to help M House run
smoothly. In addition to all of our teachers, thank you to Stacy Sharf, Chris Dickinson and Margue-rite Dunn for their countless hours in helping to organize parent participation and pulling off House events.
I also want to thank our M House Student Leadership for their hours of hard work this year. Their time and dedication has been essential. Our M House officers, Sam Boloorchi, McKenna Bass, Patrick King and Sophie Zelon have helped lead the way.
Senior parents are invited to two culminating events this year. Please mark your calendars for our Senior Farewell Dinner, which will be held on June 1st. This night will include dinner for all and a special recognition for all seniors in atten-dance. The graduation ceremony will take place in the Greek Theatre on the evening of June 14.
I t is hard to believe that we are so close to the end of the school year. O House teachers and staff would like to congratulate our students
who will be culminating on June 14th. We would also like to congratulate and thank families who have helped students along the road of reach-ing this point. With only a few short weeks left, please remind your student, especially your senior, to stay focused and not stray from the main objective: ending senior year on a positive note. As for our underclassmen, I am proud of the progress they have made through this year, and I look forward to having them set appropri-ate examples for our incoming students in the fall. Good luck on finals, and have a relaxing and peaceful summer!
T he H House is working with teachers and students to take a step back and attack problems from different perspectives. It
allows us all to think outside of the box and do things differently. That kind of skill will take your student far! We’ve also been working on Focused Learning Targets that, hopefully, your student used to prepare for upcoming assessment. You might consider asking your student to show them to you.
Due to construction, H House Luau was cancelled this spring. However, we’re working on other opportunities for H House students to socialize. We always appreciate your contribu-tions, both financially and in time.
We’re in the home stretch! You can still make those connections with teachers—open communication with the school is key!
W arm greetings to the parents, students, alumni and community members of the iHouse team! As another year
begins to wind down, the iHouse staff would like to thank all the parents and community members who have supported Samohi—and our house—throughout this year. We could not have hosted all the activities and events without your generosity!
Finally, we are so proud of our iHouse seniors and want to wish them congratulations on their upcoming graduation! There will be a Senior Banquet on Friday, June 1st from 7:00–8:30 pm in the Library.

Message from our Nurse
S pring is upon us, with longer days and more sunlight. However, flu season is projected to be longer this year. If your
student is ill, especially with a fever or other contagious symptoms, keep him/her home. Testing season will shortly be upon us. Please don’t send your student to school just for testing if he/she is truly ill. There are make up oppor-tunities! Student’s medication, other than Advil or Tylenol, require a doctor’s order. Student’s medication will be kept in the Nurse’s Office. And remember, NO student is allowed to be on campus on crutches without documentation stating specifically that the student must use crutches at school, and for how long!
W hat a season it’s been for Samohi arts! From the soaring voices of our choir’s Motus Perpetuus to our powerful
orchestra and band performances, to the stellar collaboration of dance, song, theater and musi-cianship that was South Pacific, Samohi students and faculty rose to the occasion. Proof, once again, that our school deserves its place as one of the most respected high school arts programs in the nation.
Stairway of the Stars SMMUSD’s deep commitment to music was
on display again at this year’s Stairway—the 63rd annual all-district student concert—which focused on our brilliant bands. Glittering brass, woodwinds and percussion filled the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, much of it under the baton of guest conductor Tom Cole. Nearly 1000 students performed virtuoso pieces to the delight of the packed auditorium. In a touching ceremony, Chandra Narain was honored for her decades of service to our student musicians.
SCSBOA RatingsOn March 28 and 29, the Santa Monica High
School Band and Orchestra Festival took place at Samohi where 35 concert bands and orchestras from around the Los Angeles area participated. Each band and orchestra at the Festival performs before a panel of three adjudicators. Afterward, the group is given a piece of music that they have
never seen before and are asked to perform it for the first time.
Even though the SMMUSD groups usually do extremely well, this year is the first year that all groups from our district received a Superior rating—the highest achievable! Very few bands and orchestras are awarded this highest of honors. Congratulations!
Concert for the Arts On April 21, performers Jackson Browne,
Glen Phillips (of Toad the Wet Sprocket), and Venice (the band) blew the lid off of Barnum Hall, supported by members of the Samohi Choir and Orchestra. This rousing celebration was the 9th annual concert to raise funds for the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation’s (SMMEF) “For The Arts” campaign.
Rebecca Birstock, May Claire La Plante, and Christina Lammell and junior Isaac Nemzer were selected as finalists in the Southern California Vocal Association Solo Competition held on March 11. In addition, these nine Samohi choral students were chosen to participate in the 2012 All-State Honor Choirs in Pasadena March 22–24: Seniors Peter Harding, Christina Lamell, and May Claire la Plante; juniors Eloise Graham, Caitlin Kerwin, Bret Hart, Preston Searfoss, and Gretchen Sharp; and sophomore Max Daggy.

In March, Samohi Orchestra cellists Niall Ferguson and Jeffrey Ho were invited to perform at Disney Hall in the prestigious Piatigorsky Cello Festival, which featured a number of world-renowned cellists and got a rave review in the L.A. Times.
Symphony Orchestra traveled to Washing-ton D.C. over Spring Break. Their itinerary included performances in the National Museum for Women in the Arts and in the Schlesinger Center for the Performing Arts, workshops with members of the Baltimore Symphony and the Peabody Conservatory, and a White House tour.
Wind Ensemble will be traveling to San Diego on May 19th, to perform with Rancho Bernardo High School Wind Ensemble, and will tour the Embarcadero and USS Midway.
Don’t miss the crowd-pleasing Orchestra Pops Concert on May 22 and Band Pops Concert on June 5, and the Orchestra Senior Gala on June 9, all in Barnum Hall.

Samohi Teacher Jeffe Huls Wins Prestigious Bravo Award
W inners of the Music Center’s BRAVO Awards are those educators, selected by their peers, who exemplify excellence
in arts education. After submitting videos of his teaching and examples from his lesson plan, as well as having members of the BRAVO Awards selection committee visit his classroom, Samohi choral director Jeffe Huls was named a winner of the prestigious 2012 BRAVO Awards at the Disney Concert Hall this past March.
“We are so proud of Mr. Huls,” commented SMMUSD’s Visual and Performing Arts Coordina-tor Tom Whaley, “and are extremely thankful that our district attracts teachers like him to work with our students in the arts every day!”
After receiving his crystal trophy and a cash award dedicated to supplementing arts programs, Mr Huls gave a short acceptance speech thanking his administrators, colleagues, and SMMUSD for their support of arts education.

Join BAM!
T he Black Academia Movement (BAM!) is a circle of parents, students and educators at Samohi. Our goal is to keep our youth
engaged by motivating them to perform at their peak and promoting exceptional education. BAM! engages students by arranging field trips, workshops, seminars and guest speakers. W inning the Southern California Regional Ocean Bowl, Samohi’s team, made up of seniors David Shabsovich, Chris
Karba, Dana Ritchie, and Zane Dufour and junior Marissa Kudo, defeated twenty other schools at the tournament. They also had a thrilling come-back win in the final against archrival Arcadia High. By winning the team earned the right to represent California at the National Champion-ships in Baltimore.

O ur Vikings had a great start in Ocean League spring athletics. Softball, Golf, Girls and Boys Track, Swim and Volley-
ball were poised to shine in May CIF playoffs. Big thanks to Dr. Martin and Mrs. Hollie Tirrel, our medical staff, for keeping our teams healthy and mended.
The coaching staff is currently participat-ing in the city-wide program, Male Violence Prevention Program. We look forward to having this add to the emphasis against bullying and harassment.
The Athletic Department is proud to welcome Ms. Marissa Silvestri to the talented head coaching staff at Samohi, as she takes on Girls Basketball. Ms. Silvestri previously assisted Coach Verdugo on the Varsity staff, has over 10 years of coaching experience, and is a member of the Social Studies staff at Samohi. Her inten-sity, knowledge of the game and love for Samohi Basketball will contribute to the program’s future success .
We are excited about getting close to having a girls golf team once again. Resumes are being accepted, and player sign ups are being taken. The girls will compete in the fall.

T he student portal in Illuminate is available for all students! On March 19th Each Senior English class were given instructions on
setting up their Illuminate Student Portal. Juniors, Sophomore, and Freshmen were given instruc-tions the week after. If you would like to assist your child with setting up their account please follow these simple instructions with them.

H $200 (Pust) for photocopying related to 11th grade English AP practice exams and helping teachers focus instruction in weeks leading up to the real test.
H $235.52 (Ustation) to purchase four repro-ducible books on Narrative, Persuasive, Comparative and How To writing for SPED English 11 and 12 SAI students; books will be used to develop consistency in the way writing is taught throughout the department.
H $320 (Soller) for bus transportation for 50 “Get Lit” students to attend Slam Poetry Competition in Los Angeles; exposure to poetry both boosts literacy and fosters creativity.
H $243.95 (Panallion) to purchase chemistry periodicals to be shared by all chemistry teachers, exposing approximately 700 students to chemistry applications in every-day life.
A SAD FAREWELL TO COACH GRISWOLD
M ike Griswold, 68, a teacher, coach and former Samohi athletic director, died April 15 in Guatemala while on vacation
with his wife. Griswold had a passion for teach-ing and coaching, wrote athletic director Daniel Escalera. “In his heart, Mike was full of love for Santa Monica High. Even in retirement, if there was a key Viking game going on, Mike would be there.” He came out of retirement last year to help coach football.

S amohi’s Site Council now has the published report “Equity and Categori-cal Fund Allocations for the 2011-2012
School Year” up on the school website, http://www.samohi.smmusd.org/ In addition to that, you can find a link to the “Single Plan for Student Achievement” (a clarification of programs funded). Samohi’s Site Council is currently creating a homework policy based on feedback from our teachers and students, and we constantly strive to close the achievement gap by evaluating our funded programs.

Grad Nite 2012 — “Jamaica Me Crazy!”
D on’t miss being part of Samohi’s fabled Grad Nite, when our tennis courts are transformed into a cruise ship to Jamaica
as a rite of passage for our graduates! This year’s Grad Nite will take place on Thursday, June 14 from 9:30 pm to 5:00 am—a drug and alcohol-free graduation party with a DJ, dancing, carnival and casino games, food, prizes and more—keep-ing our students safe on what is statistically the most dangerous night of their lives. Over the last 20 years, we’ve kept over 13,000 students safe and sober averaging 85-95% attendance. But it takes a village!
All hands are needed on deck to make this happen—parents of all students, not only seniors. Here’s what you can do:
Prizes: Over 700 prizes are needed for the prize
booth! Anything a graduating senior might enjoy or need would be greatly appreciated!
Donations: With a budget close to $85,000, we need both

Construction and Set Decorating: Moving sets from the History Building base-
ment to the tennis courts will be on Saturday, May 26 from 9 am to 4 pm—we need your help! Construction and refurbishing of sets will begin on Sunday, May 27 and continue the first two weekends in June. Information will be posted online regarding exact dates and times as we get closer to the event. No artistic or construction experience necessary!
Event Night Volunteer: The night of June 14, two-hour shifts begin at
9:30 pm and end at 5:30 am. Senior parents will receive a letter in April with instructions on how to sign up online, after we return from Spring Break. C ontemplando el final de mi turno como Presidenta de la PTSA, tengo una mezcla de emociones. Si
bien estoy lista para seguir adelante con la siguiente etapa de mi vida, ya que mi estudiante más joven se gradúa de la familia SMMUSD, estoy consciente de los cambios que enfrentaré. Gracias por permitirme la oportunidad de ser la voz de los padres en los últimos dos años.
Durante los últimos años, mi pasión ha sido alre-dedor de la educación. Desde la escuela Roosevelt a Samohi, desde una escuela individual al Distrito, desde la Fundación Educativa al Consejo de la
Debbie Mulvaney ha sido un líder increíble-mente fiel, elocuente, bien informada y eficaz durante su turno como Presidenta de Samohi. Con su cálida sonrisa y actitud de que ‘sí se puede’, Debbie ha organizado, abogado, representado, mediado e inspirado… Sus contribuciones han beneficiado grandemente a nuestros estudiantes, padres y personal. Escuela de Verano de Intervención Intensiva en
M ientras termina el año escolar, es el tiempo que muchos de nuestros estudiantes comienzan a pensar sobre la escuela de
verano para recuperar créditos. Escuela de Verano de Intervención Intensiva está disponible este año para los estudiantes de SMMUSD que no pasaron clases necesarias para poderse graduar. Actual-mente estamos ofreciendo;

Todos los consejeros están poniendo pedido para la escuela de verano basado en los crédi-tos obtenidos por el estudiante durante toda su estadía en la preparatoria. Los estudiantes en los grados superiores tendrán prioridad de inscripción, seguido por los estudiantes que no pasaron un curso. Las cartas que confirmen la inscripción en la escuela de verano saldrán la semana del 18 de junio.
La escuela de verano comenzará el Lunes, 25 de junio 2012 y durará hasta el Martes, 31 de julio 2012. No habrá escuela el miércoles, 4 de julio 2012 en conmemoración del Día de la Indepen-dencia.
Las clases son de lunes a viernes, de 8:00 - 12:35 (Período 1: 8:00-10:05, Período 2:10:20-12:35).La asistencia es importante para el éxito del estudiante. Por lo tanto, los estudiantes no pueden empezar la escuela de verano después del tercer día, Viernes, 29 de junio 2012. Los estudian-tes que no asisten el primer día de escuela de verano pueden ser rechazados. Cualquier estu-diante que pierde más de tres días de cualquier curso de la escuela de verano será dado de baja del curso. Si llegan tarde ocho veces a cualquier curso es considerado un día de ausencia en el curso y cuenta para el número total de ausencias.
R ecuerde, que el segundo semestre es tan importante cómo el primero. ¡Mantenga las calificaciones altas! Ya que llegó la tempo-
rada de los exámenes así no se sentirá abrumado. Una sugerencia es de dividir los proyectos grandes en pequeños pedazos para hacerlo mejor. Si tiene un examen grande, divida sus sesiones de estudios también. Y si necesita ayuda, asegúrese de hablar con su maestro, y tome ventaja con la tutoría!
Los consejeros visitarán JAMS, Lincoln y SMASH para las presentaciones de los que entran al 9º grado y a las reuniones de padres.
Servicios de Salud Mental en la Escuela
S amohi tiene la suerte de tener en lugar en nuestra escuela, servicios de la salud mental ofreciendo ayuda que incluye intervención
de crisis; apoyo a padres adolescentes y sus hijos; terapia individual, parejas y grupo; y terapia para fortalecer las relaciones familiares Además, hay apoyo para los estudiantes para que superen las barreras sociales y emocionales que previenen el aprendizaje, para mejorar las habilidades de afrontamiento y para reducir los síntomas de la salud mental que pueden afectar la calidad de vida dentro y fuera de la escuela.
Los estudiantes pueden ser referidos por conse-jeros, maestros o enfermeras. Para obtener ayuda, los padres o estudiantes pueden contactar a su consejero en la escuela, quien referirá al estudiante aun coordinador y a un terapista de los servicios de salud mental en la escuela. Ya solamente hay un número limitado de consejería en la escuela, se les da prioridad en el campo escolar a estudiante que quizás no puedan tener acceso a servicios en la comunidad. El terapista de la escuela se comuni-cará con los padres para conectar al estudiante y familia con los servicios que mejor satisfagan sus necesidades, ya sea en la escuela o una de las muchas agencias en la comunidad.

S i su estudiante desea tomar una clase para crédito durante los meses de verano en vez de durante el año escolar, una opción conve-
niente es el programa de verano de la Fundación Educativa, Ed Ahead, el cual es basado en cuota. Las clases son en Samohi, del 25 de junio al 31 de julio, lunes a viernes, 8 am a 12:35 pm. PTA, he pasado mi tiempo abogando y recaudando fondos, en la política y apoyando. Ha sido frus-trante e inspirador, difícil pero gratificante. Animo a cada uno de ustedes a que participe en la insti-tución que es SMMUSD y específicamente Samohi. Esta escuela tiene éxito gracias a la dedicación de su administración, maestros y PADRES.
En estos tiempos de dificultades financiera, noso-tros como padres podemos agregar una medida de participación que es una parte necesaria y vital para la escuela, incluso a nivel de la preparatoria. Y mientras que los dólares son la manera más fácil de contribuir y definitivamente necesario, no es la única cosa que puede hacer. Anime a su estudiante, ayude en el salón de texto, asista a las reuniones de la PTSA, ayude en la oficina de la Casa de su estu-diante. Nosotros podemos ser la diferencia entre una experiencia mediocre y una excelente para todos nuestros estudiantes.

Tenemos la suerte de dar la bienvenida a Lisa Balfus como la próxima Presidenta de la PTSA. Lisa tiene muchos años como voluntaria en nuestras escuelas, el Distrito y Samohi. CONSTRUCCIÓN EN LA ESCUELA
Arboles—Un Manual de Samohi
L a preparatoria de Santa Monica High School fue edificada en el 1913 en el sitio actual de 26-acres. La historia fotografía muestra un
campo escolar lleno de arboles de muchas varie-dades que hicieron su hogar en nuestro campus. Durante las últimas décadas, las huellas y topogra-fía ha cambiado junto con el paisaje. Los arboles se movieron para hacer espacio para edificios y otras expansiones necesaria y como resultado nuestra área sombrada se ha hecho más limitada.
El año 2012 ha traído consigo un gran cambio a Samohi, se abrió camino para nuestro nuevo moderno Edificio de Innovación, el futuro hogar de los salones de clases de la Casa I y los labo-ratorios de ciencia. Envolviendo el Edificio de Innovación de 97,000 pies cuadrado será la Plaza Centenario – un paisaje que tendrá un área de múltiple uso al aire libre un sitio para
reunirse, almorzar, y espacio con sombra. Los arboles tienen un papel centra en esta Plaza Centenario – y toda la comunidad tiene una maravi-llosa oportunidad de participar y apoyar este hito de 100 años en el campo escolar.
A partir de este otoño, pondremos en marcha una campaña para traer el mayor número de arboles posible a esta área. Las familia tendrán la oportunidad de apoyar este proceso comprando arboles a nombre de su estudiante o clase. Ya que la clase del 2013 será la clase de graduados del centenario en este sitio, es una manera muy especial de conmemorar este momento impor-tante y al mismo tiempo honorar a su estudiante. Iniciativas propuestas para la votación de noviembre
C omo padres de familia y voluntarios en las escuelas de nuestros hijos, no importa lo duro que trabajamos para recaudar fondos
a nivel local, vemos de primera mano los efectos de la reducción a los fondos estatal de educación: las escuelas superpobladas, con tamaños de clase más alto que el promedio nacional, y una lucha constante en nuestro distrito para mantener biblio-tecarios, arte, música y educación física intactas (mientras que muchos distritos ya lo han visto desaparecer).
Debido a que el Estado no ha podido financiar adecuadamente nuestras escuelas, los padres han tenido que trabajar duro para ayudar a llenar ese vacío, pero la necesidad es muy grande, y la inver-sión es demasiado importante como para depender en la recaudación de fondos en la escuela.
Este año, hay dos iniciativas de votación en todo el estado haciendo su camino a través del proceso de recolección de firmas para la votación de noviembre del estado.

Este año, hay dos iniciativas de votación en todo el estado haciendo su camino a través del proceso de recolección de firmas para la votación de noviembre del estado.
Las escuelas y la Ley Local de Protección a la Seguridad Pública de 2012 http://www.ProtectS-choolsAndPublicSafety.org/ esta propuesta por el gobernador Brown. Se enmendaría la constitución del estado para volver a alinear el financiamiento estatal a los gobiernos locales para los costos de encarcelamiento y aumentar los ingresos y los impuestos de ventas durante siete años, después de lo cual expiraría. El propósito de la propuesta del gobernador es ayudar a lo que parece ser un déficit crónico del presupuesto estatal y reducir los recortes a los programas financiados por el estado, incluyendo la educación.
La otra medida electoral del estado, a Nuestros niños, Nuestro Futuro (OCOF), http://OurChil-drenOurFuture2012.com/, Está propuesta por Molly Munger, una abogada de derechos civiles y fundadora de la organización Advancement Project, una organización de defensa de los niños sin fines lucrativos situada en Los Ángeles. El objetivo de Nuestros Niños, Nuestro Futuro es enfocar los fondos a cada escuela para restaurar los programas de educación que han sido cortados, para reducir el tamaño de clase e invertir en nuevos progra-mas. Además, esta medida proporciona financia-ción adicional para la mejora de, y un mayor acceso a, los programas preescolares. Se establecería un impuesto progresivo aumento de los ingresos durante 12 años, después de lo cual podrá ser renovado por una mayoría de votos en todo el estado. Nuestros niños, nuestro futuro también proporcionará fondos para ayudar a acabar con el déficit del presupuesto dell estado.
En junio, debemos saber si alguna o ambas de estas medidas de hecho aparecerá en la boleta electoral de noviembre.
Nuevos Hábitos Mantienen a los Estudiantes Seguros
L os patrones de tráfico alrededor de Samohi se han convertido en casi una rutina. ¡Gracias a todos lo que han cambiado sus
patrones para mantener a nuestros estudiantes seguros. Las señales de estacionamiento de la ciudad se han instalado en la Calle Siete. Los primeros 90 pies de la Avenida Michigan está dedicado para a bordar los autobuses y el resto de la Calle Siete es señalado para la carga y descarga antes de las 9 am y después de las 3 pm. Dos horas de estaciona-miento en la Calle Siete está disponible de 9am–3 pm, excepto los miércoles cuando hay dos horas de estacionamiento disponible de 12pm–3pm.
Durante todas las reuniones en la escuela la entrada de peatones está detrás de la cafetería está abierta para las familias que usan la parada de autobús en Pico Blvd. También, los estudiantes pueden utilizar esta entrada 30 minutos antes de comenzar las clases. Por favor no salte la pared.
L os corredores de maratón, a pesar de tener que correr por más de dos horas de distancia, a pesar de tener 20+ en su paso, ¡terminan
la carrera enérgicos! De alguna manera, en algún lugar encuentran un poco de energía extra, de enfo-que, de determinación de no solamente terminar, pero terminar con fuerza! Con la seis semanas que faltan y los exámenes de CST, AP, y CAHSEE detrás, el verdadero reto ahora es el de mantenerse enfo-cado las finales seis semanas. Esperamos poder ayudarlos a mantenerlos en camino a la gradua-ción y concentrado a el largo plazo. La escuela de verano traerá a muchos de ustedes de regreso al campo escolar. La Casa S gustaría darles las gracias por el apoyo durante su tiempo aquí, y por las maravillosas donaciones para la celebración de los estudiantes.
¡Les deseamos a todos nuestros graduados buena suerte! Han dejado sus huellas en Samohi para las futuras generaciones. Nos harán sincera-mente mucha falta, y les deseamos años de conti-nuo triunfo en sus vidas. Recuerde que cada día, y cada decisión, cuenta. Que nada se ha ganado que sea fácil. Anime a su niño ha que mantenga buena asistencia, hacer buenas decisiones, y lo mejor en todas sus clases. No hay substituto para trabajar duro. Nunca se de por vencido.
E n esta correspondencia, el último boletín del año, deseo darles las gracias a aquellos han trabajado sin descanso durante el año para
ayudar a que la Casa M funcione sin problema. Además de todos nuestros maestros, gracias a Stacy Sharf, Chris Dickinson y Margarita Dunn por sus incontables horas para ayudar a organizar la participación de los padres y organizando eventos de la Casa M.
También quiero dar las gracias a nuestro liderazgo estudiantil por sus horas de duro trabajo este año. Su tiempo y dedicación han sido muy importantes. Nuestros oficiales de la Casa M, Sam Boloorchi, McKenna Bass, Patrick King y Sophie Zelon ayudaron a abrir el camino.

E s difícil creer que estamos tan cerca del final del año escolar. Los maestros y el personal de la Casa O desean felicitar a nuestros estu-
diantes que se graduarán el 14 de junio. También queremos felicitar y agradecer a las familias que han ayudado a los estudiantes en el camino de llegar a este momento. Con sólo unas cortas semanas que quedan, por favor recuérdele a su estudiante, especialmente a su estudiante en el 12º grado, que se mantenga enfocado y no se aparte del objetivo principal: terminar su último año positivamente. A los estudiantes en los grados del 9 al 11, estoy orgullosa del progreso que han hecho este año, y espero contar con ellos para ser ejem-plos para nuestros nuevos estudiantes en el otoño. ¡Buenas suerte en los exámenes finales y espero que tengan un verano relajante y tranquilo!
L a Casa H está trabajando con los maestros y estudiantes para distanciarse y atacar a los problemas desde diferentes perspectivas. Nos
permite a todos a pensar fuera de lo normal y hacer las cosas de manera diferente. ¡Este tipo de habi-lidades llevará a su hijo lejos! También estamos trabajando en Enfocadas Metas de Aprendizaje que, esperamos, sus estudiantes han usado para prepararse para los próximos exámenes. Considere pedirle a su estudiante que se la muestre.
Debido a la construcción de la Casa H el Luau de esta primavera fue cancelado. Sin embargo, estamos preparando otras oportunidades para que los estudiantes de la Casa H se socialicen. Nosotros siempre agradecemos sus contribuciones, tanto económicamente a igual que su tiempo. ¡Estamos en la recta final! Todavía puede hacer esas conexio-nes con los maestros-¡La comunicación abierta con la escuela es la clave!

Mensaje de la enfermera
L a primavera está aquí, con días más largo y más luz solar. Sin embardo, se proyecta que la temporada de gripe va ha ser más larga.
Si su estudiante está enfermo, especialmente con fiebre u otros síntomas contagiosos, déjelo/a en casa. La temporada de los exámenes llega en breve. Por favor no envíe a su estudiante a la escuela solamente para tomar los exámenes si él/ella está reamente enfermo. Hay oportunidades para tomar los exámenes más tarde. Los medicamentos de los estudiantes, con la excepción de Advil o Tylenol, requieren una orden del médico. Los medicamen-tos se mantendrán en la enfermería. Y recuerde, NO se les permitirá a ningún estudiante a estar en la escuela con muletas sin la documentación indi-cando específicamente que el estudiante tiene que usar muletas en la escuela, y por cuanto tiempo.
L as artes de Samohi tuvieron una tremenda temporada! Desde las elevadas voces del Motus Perpetuus de nuestro coro a las poten-
tes funciones de la orquestra y banda, a la estelar colaboración de danza, canto, teatro y música que fue la obra South Pacific, los estudiantes y la facul-tad de Samohi estuvieron a la altura de la situación. Probando otra vez que nuestra escuela se merece su sitio como uno de los programas de artes de las preparatorias más respectadas en el país.
Escaleras a las EstrellasLa profunda dedicación del SMMUSD a la música
fue mostrada este año otra vez en la función de Escaleras a las Estrellas—el 63o concierto anual de todo el distrito—el cual enfoca en nuestras brillan-tes bandas. Las brillantes brass, instrumentos de vientos y percusión llenaron el Auditorio Cívico de Santa Mónica, bajo la batuta del conductor invitado Tom Cole. Casi 1000 estudiantes realizaron piezas virtuosas deleitando un auditorio lleno. En una emocionante ceremonia, Chandra Narain fue hono-rada por décadas de servicios a nuestros estudian-tes de músicos. Calificaciones de SCSBOA
El 28 y el 29 de marzo, el Festival de Banda y Orquesta de Santa Mónica High School se llevó a cabo en Samohi donde 35 bandas de conciertos y orquestas de toda el área de Los Ángeles parti-ciparon. Cada banda y orquesta en el Festi-val presenta ante un panel de tres jueces. Luego, se le da una pieza de música al grupo que nunca han visto antes y se les pide que se realice por primera vez.
A pesar de que los grupos de SMMUSD por lo general les va muy bien, este año es el primer año que todos los grupos de nuestro distrito reci-bió una calificación de superior-lo más alto posi-ble! A muy pocas bandas y orquestas se les otorga el más alto de los honores. ¡Felicitaciones!
Concierto para las Artes
El 21 de abril, los intérpretes de Jackson Browne, Glen Phillips (de Toad the Wet Sprocket) y Venice (la banda) voló la tapa de Barnum Hall, con el apoyo de los miembros del Coro y Orquesta de Samohi. Además, estos nueve estudiantes de coro de Samohi fueron elegidos para participar en los coros de Honor 2012 All-State en Pasadena del 22 a 24 de marzo: El estudiante de último año Peter Harding, Lamell Christina, y May Claire La Plante, estudiante de tercero Eloise Graham, Caitlin Kerwin, Bret Hart, Preston Searfoss, y Gretchen Sharp, y estu-diante de segundo año Daggy Max .

Jeffrey Ho de la Orquesta de Samohi fueron invita-das a Disney Hall al prestigioso Festival de Violón Piatigorsky, que ofreció una serie de violonchelis-tas de renombre mundial y obtuvo una crítica muy favorable en el periódico Los Ángeles Times.
La Orquestra Sinfónica viajó a Washington D.C. durante las vacaciones de primavera. Su itinerario incluyó actuaciones en el Museo Nacional de las Mujeres en la Artes y el Centro Schlesinger para las artes Escénicas, y talleres con excursiones EWhite House.
El Conjunto de Viento va a viajar a San Diego el 19 de marzo, para actuar con el Conjunto de Viento de la Preparatoria Rancho Bernardo, hará una excursión al Embarcadero y USS Midway.

L os ganadores de los premios BRAVO del Centro de Música son educadores, elegidos por sus pares, que ejemplifican la excelencia
en la educación artística. Después de presentar videos de su enseñanza y ejemplos de su plan de clase, así como visitas al salón de clase por los miembros del comité de selección de Premios BRAVP, el director de coros de Samohi Jeffe Huls fue nombrado ganador de los prestigiosos Premios Bravo 2012 en la sala Disney Concert Hall este pasado marzo.
“Estamos orgullo del Sr. Huls,” comentó el Coordinador de las Artes Visuales y Escénicas de SMMUSD, “y estoy bastante agradecido que nuestro distrito atrae maestros como él para trabajar con nuestros estudiantes todos los”

A l ganarse el premio Ocean Bowl, Regional del Sur de California, los estudiantes del 12º grado, David Shabsovich, Chris Karba, Dana
Ritchie, y Zane Dufour y la estudiante del 11º grado Marissa Kudo, derrotaron a otras vente escuelas en el torneo. También tuvieron un emocionante regreso ganando en contra de la preparatoria archi-rrival Arcadia High. Al ganar, el equipo se ganó el derecho de representar a California en el Campeo-nato Nacional en Baltimore.

L os Vikings tuvieron un gran comienzo en la liga de atletismo de primavera Ocean League. Softball, Golf, Pista de Niñas y Niños,
Natación y voleibol estaban listos para brillar en los desempates de CIF. Muchas gracias al Dr. Martin y Sra. Hollie Tirrel, nuestro personal médico, por mantener a nuestro equipo saludable.
El cuerpo de entrenadores está participando en un programa de toda la ciudad, Programa de la Prevención de Violencia Masculina. Esperamos que adicione al énfasis contra la intimidación y el acoso.
El Departamento de Deportes se enorgullece de dar la bienvenida a la Sra. Ms. Marissa Silvestri al talentoso personal de entrenadores de Samohi, tomando la posición en el baloncesto femenino. La Sra. Silvestri previamente ayudó al entrenador Verdugo en el equipo Varsity, tiene más de 10 años de experiencia en entrenamiento, y es miembro del departamento de estudios sociales de Samohi. Su intensidad, conocimiento del juego y amor por el Baloncesto de Samohi, contribuirá al futuro éxito del programa.

H $320 (Soller) para la transportación de 50 estu-diantes “Get Lit” para asistir a la competencia Slam de Poesía en Los Ángeles; exponiéndolos a la poesía aumenta la alfabetización y fomenta la creatividad.
H $243.95 (Panallion) para comprar revistas de química para ser compartido por todos los maestros de química, exponiendo a casi 700 estudiantes a la aplicación de química en la vida diaria.
UNA TRISTE DESPEDIDA AL ENTRENADOR GRISWOLD
M ike Griswold, 68, un maestro, entrenador y pasado director de deportes de Samohi, falleció el 15 de abril en Guatemala
durante unas vacaciones con su esposa. “Griswold fue apasionado por la enseñanza y el entrenamiento” escribió el director de deportes Daniel Escalera. “En su corazón, Mike estaba lleno de amor por Samohi. Hasta en su retiro, si había un juego importante del equipo Viking, Mike estaba ahí.” Él salió de su retiro para ayudar en el entrenamiento de futbol.

E l Consejo de Samohi ha publicado el reporte “Equidad y Asignaciones de Fondo con Restricciones para el Año Escolar 2011–

Actualmente el Consejo de Samohi está creando una póliza para las tareas basada en comentarios de los maestros y estudiantes, y siempre estamos esforzándonos para cerrar la brecha en el rendimiento académico mediante la evaluación de los programas que financiamos.

Fiesta de Graduación “Grad Nite 2012”— “Jamaica Me Crazy!”
N o se pierda ser parte de la legendaria fiesta de graduados de Samohi, Grad Nite, cuando las canchas de tenis se transforma
en un crucero a Jamaica como un rito de paso para los graduados! Este año, la Noche de Gradua-ción tendrá lugar el Jueves, 14 de junio 9:30pm –5:00 am - fiesta de graduación, sin droga y sin alcohol, con un DJ, baile, carnaval y juegos de casino, comida, premios y mucho más - mantener a nuestros estudiantes seguros en lo que es estadís-ticamente la noche más peligrosa de sus vidas. En los últimos 20 años, hemos mantenido más de 13.000 alumnos se seguros y sobrios con un promedio de 85-95% de asistencia. ¡Pero se nece-sita la comunidad!

Construcción y Decoración de Set: Mover la escenografía desde el sótano del edifi-
cio de historia a la cancha de tenis será el sábado, 26 de mayo de 9 am a 4 pm—necesitamos ayuda! La construcción y rehabilitación del set comenzará el domingo, 27 de mayo y continuará los primeros dos fines de semanas en junio. La información se publicará en línea sobre las fechas y horas exactas cuando se acerque más la fecha del evento. No se necesita experiencia artística o de construcción.
Voluntarios para la Noche del Evento: La noche del 14 de junio, los turnos de dos
horas comienzan a las 9:30 pm y terminan a las 5:30 am. Los padres de estudiantes que se gradúan recibirán una carta en abril con las instrucciones de cómo apuntarse en línea, después que regresemos de las vacaciones de primavera. Habrá un enlace para la inscripción de voluntarios desde la página principal de Samohi.
