disPo™ Powder dispensing technology
The ability to dispense dry powders and solids is a valuable tool for materials discovery, development, and optimization. The DisPo Powder Dispensing Technology provides an automated means to deliver a wide variety of powders over the mass range of 100μg to 20mg.
A key consideration for dispensing powders is the minimum amount of sample required. This is the amount of material that must be present in order to sample and dispense a given mass of powder. While this minimum sample amount is somewhat related to the target mass to be dispensed (in that it dictates the sample probe size, which in turn determines some minimal vessel geometry), the ideal scenario is to be able to sample from as small a starting mass as possible and to be as efficient in the use of this material as possible. Delivering low mass samples from these small starting masses is also a common consideration. A typical applica-tion would involve delivering 20-50 individual samples of 50-100µg from the same sample vessel.
Powders are dispensed via a volumetric delivery from a sample probe. This volume, combined with the bulk density of the powder being sampled, determines the mass that is delivered. There is an adjustable plunger within the sampling probe that allows for the setting of a fill height within the probe. This fill height and the diameter of the probe determine the sampling volume of powder. The sample probe is lowered into the powder, where it extracts the determined volume of powder. The probe is then moved out of the source location and moved over to the destination location with the plunger still being retracted. Once over the destination location, the plunger is actuated and the powder is delivered into the source location. This entire process is automated and programmable though the control software interface of the DisPo Powder Dispensing Systems.

a revolutionary analytical Balance for Increased Productivityian Ciesniewski, mettler-Toledo, inc.
Weighing is the most fundamental operation in the ana-lytical laboratory, and laboratories continually look for new developments and configurations to help increase productivity. The latest revolution comes in the form of the Excellence (XS) line of semimicro and analytical balances from Mettler-Toledo, Inc. With the new Smart-Grid™ suspended weigh pan, weighing is more accurate and precise than ever before (Figure 1).
The revolutionary SmartGrid weigh pan, suspended from the inside of the weighing chamber, is a more efficient placement than the traditional weigh pan placed at the bottom of the balance. The grid-style weighing promotes rapid and accurate analytical weighing by allowing air to freely pass through the grid, not affecting results. In addition, the suspended weigh pan leaves the space below completely sealed with no openings or gaps. If the sample drops to the bottom of the balance, the weighing result remains unaffected since it falls to the sealed platform. A simple wipe with a balance brush effectively cleans away any spillage.
To complement the grid-style weigh pan, special Ergo-Clip™ accessories can be used. ErgoClips accommodate special tare containers that are often used in the labora-tory, securing them unshakably to the weighing pan and ensuring safe handling and weighing. ErgoClips are offered in a weighing kit, which is available separately with a single-use aluminum pan and a set of weighing boats. This accessory set allows the user to tailor the balance to perfectly suit almost any application.
Enhancing the cleaning feature of the suspended weigh pan is a new draft shield design. The chemical- and acid-resistant draft shield can be completely dismantled and
placed in the dishwasher, along with the weighing pan and Ergoclips.
Another common problem in laboratories is space. To accommodate a shortage of space, the XS operating terminal can simply be removed and placed at the side or behind the balance. This allows considerable flexibility; the angles of the terminal can also be adjusted to suit lighting levels and ensure optimal readability.
The TouchScreen touch-sensitive screen, introduced on the AX/MX/UMX balances, brings further efficiency to the weighing operation. It offers fast operation and direct access to the menu. Three different display settings aid efficient, personalized operation.
The Excellence line is also equipped with a full suite of user software. Many common applications are standard, including clear-text dialogue for density determination of solids, liquids, or pasty substances. Other applications included are weighing, statistics, and formulation.
Overall, the Excellence line of analytical and semimicro balances establishes a high standard of performance for routine weighing operations in the laboratory. The revolutionary new technology in the SmartGrid weigh pan in the XS balance will improve the efficiency of all weighing tasks in the laboratory. The features that are most valuable to the user include the SmartGrid weigh pan, accessory clips for secure attachment of special tare containers to the weigh pan, a draft shield that can be completely dismantled to facilitate cleaning, an adjust-able terminal to accommodate space requirements, and a touch-sensitive screen for speed of operation.

Protein determination for meat and meat Products using the Kjeldatherm and vapodest unitsgerhardt
IntroductionThe percent of protein contained in a sample can be determined by digesting the organically bound nitrogen content of the sample with concentrated sulphuric acid, potassium sulphate, and a catalyst. Thus the nitrogen is broken down to ammonium sulphate. By adding caustic soda in excess, ammonia is released through water steam distillation and then trapped in a solution of boric acid. Finally, the solution is titrated against an acid solution to determine the percent of available nitrogen and then calculated to obtain the final protein determination.
Analysis1. Sample PreparationThere should be a representative sample of at least 200g to start, since it will generally need to pass through a blender or a mill at least twice to achieve a homogenous mixture. Once a homogenous mixture is achieved, the sample should be stored hermetically in order to avoid any changes or decay of the composition. Analysis of the prepared sample must be done within 24 hours. Prior to the analysis, the sample should be at room temperature.
When ready to run the analysis, prepared samples are weighed using weighing paper. After weighing, the samples and chemicals are added to the digestion tubes. Sulphuric acid is then used to wash down any sample residue that might remain at the glass walls.
The values given in the annex can be used as a guideline for the initial weighings. If samples are very homogenous, the initial sample weight can be set at the lower boundary of the suggested initial weight.
2. Digestion with Kjeldatherm Digestion SystemWhen working with a Kjeldatherm System and 250mL Kjeldatherm digestion tubes, it is recommended to set the digestion at 400°C (752°F) for 70 minutes. Digestion tubes should be put into the preheated block until the sample turns translucent.
Foaming during the digestion is to be expected, however, the foaming should not exceed two-thirds of the glass. If excessive reactions occur, take out the insert rack. During the digestion, black particles remaining at the glass walls should be washed back by condensing sulphuric acid. The sample glass must be translucent after the digestion in order to obtain good results.
3. Suction of the Digestion GasesDuring the entire digestion period the Turbosob scrubber should be working. About 1200mL of a 15% caustic soda solution is recommended for the washing bottle, as this amount is sufficient to neutralize digestion gases from approximately 60 digestions. During the cooling period (about 30 minutes after lifting the insert rack or turning off the heat) the scrubber should continue working.

4. DistillationAfter the digested sample has cooled down, water steam distillation is effected according to the following program:

5. TitrationIf using the VAP 50s model, titration will be automatic. If using one of the other Vapodest systems, 3-4 drops of an indicator mixture should be added to the distillate, which should then be titrated with a standard solution until the color changes. If the endpoint determi-nation is done with a pH meter or a titrator, the indicator mixture is not necessary.
6. Blank ValueThe blank value is determined by running all steps in the analysis with just the given chemicals. The sample should not be used at this point. When the calculation is done, remember to take into account the chemicals used to determine the blank value.
Validation1. Calculation

c: Concentration of the standard acid solution (hydrochloric acid = 0.1mol/L or sulphuric acid = 0.05mol/L)
V: Consumption of the standard acid in mL during the sample analysis

Supor membrane is a hydrophilic polyethersulfone material that is ideal for cell culture and biological research. The membrane offers superior flow rates and higher throughput over competitive devices, while the built-in pre-filter option offers even better throughput of difficult-to-filter liquids.
