Principal’s Report Dear folks,
This week I’d like to offer a little
information about our ‘Daily Five’
literacy program at Hill End Public
School for 2013.
Over the past few weeks our
students have undertaken a
literacy program built around a
model known as ‘The Daily Five’. As
a basic explanation, through the
program the students undertake a
minimum of five reading and
writing activities every day – ‘The
Daily Five’.
We are using well supported
reading and writing programs such
as Reading To Learn and Jolly
Spelling within the Daily Five.
Through the literacy program for
2013 we aim to enhance individual
literacy skills through regular,
engaging and individualised
lessons and activities. I am very
happy with the effort the students
are putting towards their literacy so
far this year, and they have already
started to produce some interesting
stories through the ‘Work on
Writing’ phase of the Daily Five.

Energy Drinks
A wide range of soft drinks called ‘Energy' Drinks are now being consumed to increasing extents by
younger people.
The Facts
‘Energy' drinks are classified in the Red Category and are banned from sale in Government school
canteens. They are low in nutritional value and high in kJ and may have harmful effects on the
health of children and adolescents.
‘Energy' drinks contain very high levels of sugar (similar to soft drinks) plus high levels of caffeine or
guarana (which contains caffeine) and may also contain other additives such as B vitamins,
taurine, ephedrine and ginseng.
The major health concern regarding ‘energy' drinks is their high caffeine content.
Common ‘energy' drinks contain around 160 - 300mg caffeine per 500 ml serve.
Compare this to:
Coffee 40 - 80mg /cup, Tea 20-60mg / cup
What's the problem with caffeine?
Adverse effects of caffeine, in the quantities present in most ‘energy' drinks may include: Difficulty concentrating Difficulty sleeping Insomnia Nervousness Headache Tachycardia (rapid heart rate) Hypertension Anxiety Physiological dependence to caffeine.
Friendships to boost your child’s learning
If children are happy socially they tend to be more engaged in their learning. So teaching your child
