CHAPTER DIRECTOR

Thanks to Craig and Crystal for opening up their home again to the Chapter for a pot-luck-tour meet-ing. We man-aged to eat our way through a ride calendar for the rest of the year. With a lot of good rides planned. Judging from two of the Chapter rides we have had this month, we are in for some fun times. Dan set up a mystery ride last month that took us from the moun-tains near Julian, out through Anza Borrego State Park. We had a cou-ple of stops along the way to see some of the desert blooms (what was left) that we missed in March. Jumped on I8 at Ocotillo and headed west for dinner and then on home. That was a real nice all cli-mate ride, but no rain. Thanks, Dan, for a well planned ride. Two weeks later, 22 Chapter F members met at Wal-Mart to make a ride that was planned by Bob & Carla, to Yuma for lunch at the Cracker Barrel. We got to the res-taurant in about four hours after an-other all climate ride. We did meet with F Troop from Chandler, Ari-

zona. After lunch and a good time with new and old friends, we all headed for our respective homes. Again we had a great time. T hanks again Bob & Carla for the time and effort spent to make this trip a good one. Just a reminder that Region F and I Rally starts on May 19th in Reno, NV. Re-

gion F COY selection will be held on Monday, May 18th from 9am till noon in the ballroom at the Reno Hilton. Anyone that is in Reno on Monday morning is welcome to come and cheer for Rick & Joyce as they are entered in the competition. Best of luck to you guys! Well, I guess it's time to go for a ride. Until next time, ride safe and have fun.

ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTOR

Hope everyone had a great April, May is starting out to be fantastic. The weekend after our meeting a small group, 4 bikes and 6 people, took a ride up to Lompoc to do their poker run. We rode up with Chapter N, lea ving Oceanside around 8:30am. We had a nice ride up, visited with all the Chapters staying at the Tallyho Hotel and a good night's sleep. The ride was beautiful, through some great countryside. Granted the roads were just a bit bumpy, but we had a great time. We should plan on a larger group going up next year, the hills were so green and full of flowers after all the rain.

The next weekend, Crystal, Rick and I were supposed to ride up to Merced to do their poker run, but the weather didn't co-operate. So we went with everyone else out to Yuma for lunch. We met about 8 members from Chapter F in Arizona and had a really nice visit and a great lunch.

We women are planning a great ladies campout over the week-end of May 30th & 31st. We are going up passed Ramona to this really nice campground where Chuck and Shelley are members. We will probably bring too much food and stuff just like last year, but it will still be lots of fun. Anyone still interested in going, please let us know. Last Thursday we took our pie ride group to our new meeting place, Kearny's. I think we over-whelmed them just a bit, but I think our meeting will go over pretty good. Craig, Crystal, Bill and I went there for breakfast Sat. morning to test it out, and

the food and service was very good. Sat. we spent all day out at the Motorcycle Awareness Expo over at the Wal Mart off of Aero Drive. It was kind of a bit of a let down, not all the vendors showed up, so there were lots of empty stalls. A few of us got to show off our bikes, thanks to Craig, mine was pretty shiny! We took a nice ride afterwards and ended up at the Golden Cor-ral for dinner. Sun. morning we took off from the McDonald's in Escondido to go up to Highland and do their poker run. We had 15 bikes, but it still wasn't enough to beat Chapter Q for the largest group, they had 35 registered partici-pants. The ride took us up into the mountains and the weather was not very nice. The fog got pretty bad, a bit wet, but no rain. It would have been nice to be able to see some of the beautiful scenery we were passing by, but the fog was too thick. We still had a great time, won a few of the door prizes, but no money. We stopped at our favorite wa-tering hole in Temecula on the way home, Rocky Cola. Next weekend is our Chapter

meeting at the new place, Kearny's. After the meeting we will have our first planning meeting for our Halloween Fun Ride in October. The meeting will be at Jim and Kay Zabler's, it is a pot luck and there are di-rections in this newsletter. If you need help, call them, their number is in the front of the newsletter. Come on out and give us ideas. Sunday is a ride up to Idyllwild, leaving at 8:30 from McDonald's in Escondido. Jim Zabler has planned this ride and it should be a good one, he even has a lunch spot picked out. The next Sat we leave for Reno!!! The early group is leaving at 6:30 from McDonald's in Escondido and the later group is leaving at 8:00 from the same place. We will meet up at the 76 station at the intersection of I15 & 10 between 10:00 and 10:30. Hope to see a bunch of you on the trip, should be lots of fun. Till next time, take care and ride safe.

TAMING THE BEAST A trip through a city can require more attention and quick deci-sions than a speed-chess match. Most collisions occur in urban areas; but by being aware of your survival techniques, you can tame this beast. The first rule of thumb is: If the drivers and pedestrians around you have the choice to make the right move or the wrong one, ex-pect them to make the wrong one. Prepare for that and then be pleasantly surprised if they make a sensible decision. The second insight is that many people around you are self centered and thinking only of themselves.

Therefore, they think you know what they’re thinking about doing. If they are tailgating some-one in the next lane, they’re almost sure to make a jump into your lane. These are the “me first” folks that never use their signals. Watch for their head-motion and the body lan-guage of their wheels.

Scan you mirrors every three to five seconds for incoming cars and to keep aware of your es-cape routes. Watch for tailgaters and flash your brake lights if you think anyone needs waking up. A tailgater can put you in the hospital. Coming off the throttle for three seconds will get rid of most tailgaters. (The other way can get you arrested.) you need more following distance in heavy traffic and business areas because there are more possibili-ties of sudden tops. While driving along rows of parked cars, glance at them a half-block ahead of you. You’re watching for silhouettes of heads through the windshields or feet

under the cars. Scan for shad-ows and motion. This will give you an early warning of the pop-out pedestrian. Hand signals are more visible to the cars close to you in traffic, but use both hand and electric signals when you can, just to cover your odds. In urban areas more than half of all collisions happen at intersec-tions; 22% of them because someone blows a red light or stop sign. Most motorcyclists get whacked by someone doing a left turn. Entering an intersec-tion is similar to swimming across a pool filled with pira-

nha...Crossroads are small, but they’re deadly. Scan every in-tersection as you approach it; be alert and smooth; stay visible; and keep as much space around you as possible. Yes, city driving is a beast. Even so, a good rider with the right attitude can make a day in the city as safe as a run through the countryside. Be alert, be aware, and....RIDE SAFE!!!

Summer time and the liv'en is easy......And if not easy, at least it should be fun. Come and join us for an easy after-noon full of fun and food of course. And what better food for summer time then ice-cream? How about home-made ice-cream and all the fixins..... We are having an ice-cream social at our house at 1:00PM after the June Chapter meeting on June 13th. If you have a favorite ice-cream flavor, topping or special goodies to go with it all, please bring it to share. All yummy contributions are welcome. CHAPTER RIDE COORDINATOR

Sounds like you've all been out riding to me. As I'm sure you could tell by the lack of my presence my work shift has been a little messed up the last couple months. In at 3pm off at 1:30am and working every 4th Saturday (and those have been the 2nd Saturday of course). I did manage to make a few rides on the weekends though and this last weekend was one of the busiest. After working till 12:30 am. Crystal and I got up and met Bill and Joyce for breakfast at our new meeting place, worked the AMA motor-cycle awareness day and then

rode to Golden Corral (via Jamul) for din-ner, and if that's not enough still managed to squeeze in a movie with friends when we got home, and that was just Saturday. Sunday was the Spring Fling with CA1M I think everyone had fun even in the fog in the

hills. Nice ride I would like to do it again (in clear weather though). Well gotta go work to pay for all this fun I'm having see ya when I can and I can't wait till Reno.

Craig

FROM THE DESK OF CRAIG RUSH

Here we have the ‘back’ side of chapter F. How many can you name?

Too often we spend too little time saying "Thank You" for all the time, effort and hard work that are expended in this volun-teer organization. Well, Fay and I would like you to know that we really appreciate all that you do. Let's start with the members who selflessly attend all the chapter Get to-Gethers, the chapter rides, poker runs, charity events, Dis-trict Rallies, Region Rallies and Wing Dings. We would also like to thank you for your con-stant support of the Rider Educa-tion program and the several other programs that we are al-ways asking you to participate in. Without your support there would be

no requirement for the rest of us. Next we would like to thank all the Chapter Directors their offi-cers and their staffs. These are the folks that plan all your ac-tivities and execute all those programs that come down from Dis-trict, Region and Na-tional. They are also the ones that have to take care of the neces-sary paperwork and reports that are re-

quired. Finally, we'd like to thank the district staff. Each in their own way contributes to the many suc-cesses enjoyed by the district. They are always there to help you in any way they can. They also spend many hours not only doing their own jobs but travel-ing on weekends to visit our many chapters and participate in activities throughout the district. When you put this all together you have an unbeatable team, supporting one another in a com-mon goal of FUN, SAFETY and KNOWLEDGE. Our thanks to all of you.

********************** This is our last opportunity to remind you of the upcoming Re-gion Rally in Reno. If you are going, come on over to Virginia City Monday night for some good BBQ and a party. We'll see you there. We have a fair number of people participating in the District Points Ride program but we think some of you may not un-derstand the purpose of this pro-gram. The purpose is to put some money in your pocket. Every dollar collected is re-turned to the members. All the rides that indicate they are a Dis-trict Points Ride you can regis-

ter, pay your dollar and roll the dice. You can even register for the ride and play by mail. We keep track of your totals and next November we pay money to the top ten finishers. First place gets 25% and the other nine finishers are proportion-ately less. Join the FUN. We have two new chapters out there. Please take time to visit CA1C and CA2K and welcome them to our ever growing family. Just Remember................IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!

FROM MY SADDLE BY DAN DRESSER

The rains are everywhere. A relentless onslaught that is California's equivalent to snow elsewhere. Standing in the ga-rage praying to the Omnipotent of your choice, "Please, just one clear, dry day!" We really need to go for a "RIDE!" No, not the run to the store; the daily commute to and from work, or even a PIE RIDE. A real honest to (insert Omnipotent of your choice here) "RIDE". If you can relate to this, you are a motorcycle (for lack of a better term) Junkie. A person that un-derstands the pleasures, the dis-comforts, and the freedom one feels out on the road. And the

longing to be riding when you can't. And if you can add a bunch of your friends, all the better!! So for some unknown rea-son, the rains let up for a day! And the "Mystery Ride" got it's chance to go down in the annals of Chap-ter F history. From the in-put I got, it was Great! Those that rode along can correct me if I'm, wrong. I will let those that came out tell the tale to those that were unable. Their stories will be ore colorful that

mine. They might even have pictures!! Thanks to everyone that came out. I had a good time sharing that ride with you! Well, now its time to haul my 1200 up on it's centerstand and stand on my saddle. For those that ride with us often, you know my penchant for riding "Back Door". Its almost as bad as our CD's. I really enjoy sitting at the tail end of a gaggle of motorcy-cles. Those that ride there know how impressive it can be. I also enjoy working with the "Front Door" to keep the group safe and well organized as it rolls onward into riding nirvana. Well, that changed for a day. Leading our group out through

the hills and across S-2 and I-8 and back really woke me up as to what the "Front Door" experi-ences. Its one thing to let some-one else do the leading and fol-low along behind, doing the things a "Back Door" does. But, as I found out, it is a big respon-sibility (at least in my mind) to lead a large group. Many things run through your mind as you roll along. I won't discuss it all here, I know it will al be covered in "Group Riding Seminars" our Safety Director has planned. I will tell you that I was plum tuckered out that night, and slept 11 hours straight. Maybe I was too worried, after all this was my baby, and I wanted everyone to have a good time. As well as get home safe! But my fried old mind was going from start to fin-ish. So remember, the ones that vol-unteer to lead us on our rides, be

it 3 bikes or 20, are always thinking about those of us be-hind them or in front of them. Our safety is paramount in their minds. We owe them a thank you for their involvement. As one of those that volunteers, I thank all you riders in CA1F for helping to make all our rides most enjoyable indeed! After all, we are a group effort out there on the road. Well, I see I've squashed my heart foam again, and left a foot print on my seat cover! Soooooooooo its time to jump down from my perch and ride. Until then: "The lane is secure, Do your head check. From the rear, bring it over as a group!"

Dan

The Mystery ride desert stop was on ‘hard packed dirt’ according to Bill. According to most others, it was loose gravel.

Read this and then go for a ride! A Story To Live By by Ann Wells (Los Angeles Times) My brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of my sister's bu-reau and lifted out a tissue-wrapped package. "This," he said, "is not a slip. This is lingerie." He discarded the tissue and handed me the slip. It was exquisite; silk, handmade and trimmed with a cobweb of lace. The price tag with an astronomical figure on it was still attached. "Jan bought this the first time we went to New York, at least 8 or 9 years ago. She never wore it. She was saving it for a special occasion. Well, I guess this is the occasion." He took the slip from me and put it on the bed with the other clothes we were taking to the mortician. His hands lingered on the soft material for a moment, then he slammed the drawer shut and turned to me. "Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Every day you're alive is a special occasion." I remembered those words through the funeral and the days that followed when I helped him and my niece attend to all the sad chores that follow an unexpected death. I thought about them on the plane returning to California from the Midwestern town where my sister's family lives. I thought about all the things that she hadn't seen or heard or done. I thought about the things that she had done without realizing that they were special. I'm still thinking about his words, and they've changed my life. I'm reading more and dusting less. I'm sitting on the deck and ad-miring the view without fussing about the weeds in the garden. I'm spending more time with my family and friends and less time in committee meetings. Whenever possible, life should be a pat-tern of experience to savor, not endure. I'm trying to recognize these moments now and cherish them. I'm not "saving" anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special event-such as losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, the first camellia blossom. I wear my good blazer to the market if I feel like it. My theory is if I look prosperous, I can shell out $28.49 for one small bag of groceries without wincing. I'm not saving my good per-

fume for special parties; clerks in hardware stores and tellers in banks have noses that function as well as my party-going friends'. "Someday" and "one of these days" are losing their grip on my vocabulary. If it's worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now. I'm not sure what my sister would have done had she known that she couldn't be here for the tomorrow we all take for granted. I think she would have called family members and a few close friends. She might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend fences for past squabbles. I like to think she would have gone out for a Chinese dinner, her favorite food. I'm guessing-I'll never know. It's those little things left undone that would make me angry if I knew that my hours were limited. Angry because I put off seeing good Friends whom I was going to get in touch with-someday. Angry because I hadn't written certain letters that I intended to write-one of these days. Angry and sorry that I didn't tell my hus-band and daughter often enough how much I truly love them. I'm trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter and luster to our lives. And every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that it is special. "Carve your name on hearts, and not on marble." - Charles S. Spurgeon "People often say that this or that person has not yet found him-self. But the self is not something one finds; it is something one cre-ates." -Thomas Szasz

EDITORS CORNER

Well boys and girls, I guess it’s time for Joyce and I to start get-ting nervous. By the time you read this, Region Rally will be a week away and we will soon be competing for Couple of the Year for Region F. Unfortu-nately the competition takes place on Monday morning, so the audience will most likely consist of those who REALLY care about the program. It turns out there are only three couples competing, Colorado, Arizona and California, and we met the Co. couple last August when we went to their District Rally. In case you don’t know what COY is all about, let me share some of my thoughts about our experiences during the last 9 or

so months that we have been the California District’s COY. First of all, the most obvious dif-ference between our lives before and after winning is that LOTS more people now know us by name than we do in return. That’s made it a challenge for me personally since I’m not that great with names in the first place. Secondly, (and I’m not sure if this is because of the COY or just being part of a busy chapter) we have almost NO free weekends until the end of the year. I don’t know how much busier we could possibly be if we are fortunate enough to win at Region, but it should be inter-esting. Just in case, we have al-ready started to make plans for Wing Ding 1999 in Springfield Missouri. All in all, it’s been a very positive experience and we’re hoping that we can go ‘All the way’ for Chapter F. Wish us luck... That’s all for now. As usual, I’m working late putting this issue to bed and I need to have Joyce spell check my article so I don’t have any weird ramblings like sneaked in last month. :-)

PHOTO ALBUM – MYSTERY RIDE

Dan’s Mystery Ride provided a GREAT photo opportunity at the old Butterfield stage stop. You may see some of these in Wing World soon...

It’s not every day you can get 18 bikes with riders to hold still for a picture. If you look close, you can see Mr. Bill standing on his seat at the end of the line.
