Norfolk & Petersburg Railroad Tour Our trip will depart at 8am for a tour, which will roughly follow the route of the Norfolk & Petersburg Railroad from Norfolk to Wakefield, Virginia. Featured on this tour will be the Virginia Railway Museum (Home of N&W 1134), the Suffolk combined Seaboard Air Line and Virginian Railway Station Museum, Wakefield and the Virginia Diner, and historic Dendron, Virginia (Home of the Surry Lumber Company and the Surry, Sussex, & Southampton Railway). Lunch will be at the Virginia Diner.

Historic Lee Hall Tour For those who seek a less railroad-oriented tour, we have planned a visitation to Virginia’s Historic Triangle. First, we will tour Endview Plantation (circa 1769) which and had a promi-nent place in three of America’s early wars (Revolutionary, War of 1812, and the Civil War). Lunch is included at the Boxwood Inn (built circa 1896) in Lee Hall. For those interested, the C&O Lee Hall station beside the inn is being restored and is the only surviving structure of its type on the lower Virginia Peninsula. After eating, we continue on to Lee Hall Mansion (circa 1859), which was built by affluent planter Richard Decatur Lee. This site also has displayed a tablecloth from the USS Monitor, the Union ironclad ship from the War Between the States.

Railroaders will enjoy some special clinics on Thursday evening and Verna Kay has planned a very special evening of card making for the spouses hosted by guest presenter Laura Bailey (a minimal charge will apply).

Where Rails Meet Sails

Historic Norfolk Tour Friday’s tour is a view of Norfolk — past and present. Nor-folk’s 330-year history is rich with influences from the railroad, waterways, and the air. The exact itinerary is still being finalized but possible stops during this tour include the Battleship Wis-consin, which actively served our forces for over fifty years — in WWII, Korea, and the Persian Gulf War; the Norfolk Southern Museum located in the Norfolk Southern high-rise that overlooks the Elizabeth River; and the Norfolk Naval Base, home for 78 vessels ranging from aircraft carriers to submarines. It also serves 26 aircraft squadrons (133 aircraft) attached to the carriers and is the headquarters of the Atlantic Fleet. Admirals’ Row is a neighborhood within the Base that contains home built for the 1907 Jamestown Exposition. Lunch at the Freemason Abbey is a treat in itself. This restaurant is housed in a church built in the 1800s in downtown Norfolk. The architectural features inside this church show that Norfolk was prosperous and its congregations spared little in their build-ings of worship.

If time allows, we may conclude our tour not with rails or sails, but with an ice cream treat at Doumar’s Drive-In. This is the home of the world’s first ice cream cone machine. First used at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, it is still in operation today.

Friday Evening Harbor Tour “Go to Sea on the Carrie B”. A highlight of every convention we have held in Norfolk is our evening dinner cruise on the famous Carrie B riverboat replica. We will see many interesting sights including N&W and Virginian bridges and the NS Coal piers as can only be seen from the river. Dinner will feature Famous Rodman’s fried chicken and barbecue.

Saturday, June 25, 2011

Saturday will feature a day of hotel and on-your-own activities. We have a full day of clinics planned for Saturday beginning at around 8am and carrying through until 4pm.

Other points of interests near the hotel include MacArthur Center with over 50 stores including Nordstrom, Dillards, Restoration Hardware, and Yankee Candle. Next to the Mall is the Moses Myers House, which offers a glimpse of Jewish merchant life in Norfolk in the 18th century. The Chrysler Museum of Art, started in 1939 by American automotive heir Walter P. Chrysler, contains 30,000 pieces of art spanning 5,000 years. The museum is noted for containing one the greatest glass collections in America. And you just might be some of the very first persons to ride the Tide, Norfolk’s brand new light-rail system. It is supposed to be up and running by June, so hop aboard for a ride in the first phase of our rapid rail system. Also, the Net is a free bus that circles throughout the city and is an easy way to get to the waterfront where special festivals and activities are scheduled most weekends. Saturday Evening is our Annual Banquet; Happy hour starts at 6pm, Dinner Buffet will be at 7pm, banquet speaker is yet to be deter-mined.

Sunday, June 26, 2011

9am Brunch & Business. Our usual Sunday brunch is scheduled for 9am and our Annual Business meeting will follow at 10am. This is our fourth convention in Norfolk, previous ones were in 1986, 1993, and 2001.
