W. Kaye Lamb (1904- 1999)Dominion Archivist and National Librarian
BiographicalDr. Lamb was born in New Westminster, British Columbia. He completed undergraduate studiesin History at the University of British Columbia. From 1928 to 1932, he studied in Paris under aNichol Scholarship. The interruption of this work for the completion of an M.A. in History,1930, set him on a new path of research which led to his completion of a doctoral degree ineconomics and history from the University of London, England, 1933.
Despite the Depression, the young scholar found employment in 1934 in Victoria as theProvincial Librarian and Archivist of British Columbia. From 1936 to 1940 he was also theSuperintendent of the province’s Public Library Commission. He became the Librarian of theUniversity of British Columbia in 1940. During this stage of his career, Dr. Lamb was active onnumerous boards and societies, contributed to historical, library and marine periodicals, and waseditor of the British Columbia Historical Quarterly, 1937-1946. Building on these foundationsover the years, a list grew which included executive membership on the Canadian HistoricalAssociation, the Champlain society, the Canadian Library Association, the Society of AmericanArchivists, the Royal Society of Canada, and the Bibliographical Society of Canada.
The appointment of Dr. Lamb as Dominion Archivist signalled a new period of expansion, modernization and change for the Public Archives of Canada. By 1950, the holdings of theArchives had been reorganized into manuscript and record groups and publication of preliminaryinventories was underway. The use of microfilm was introduced in 1950. Three years later, theNational Library was founded. Lamb had officially campaigned for this institution since 1946when he was elected Vice-President of the Canadian Library Association. Dr. Lamb retired asDominion Archivist on 15 January 1969.
