- 'IAGQMH - The upcoming Christmas w i l l be very special for my wife and I because it will be the f irs t for our l i t t l e g i r l , J e s s i ca . She w i l l B e 10 months o l d and will need some help to hang the stocking that her grandmother bought (and opening presents too!) My wife Chien and I are more excited than Jessica is! Some old t r a d i t i o n s will be observed and some are: * baking tons of cookies * hanging t h e f i r s t ornament on t h e tree * * shopping for the tree and * get t ing up EARLY Christmas morning t o unwrap pre sen t s .

JIM LUMSDEN WAGMYJ - Making candy canes and peanut b r i t t l e - and - ALL -- zfse clean up the mess afterwards. Merry Christmas!

PATTI HELLER and LARRY RUPLE KB6JSD - Lar ry and I and the g ir l s (10 & 12) join the Candle Light Walk each year in Sierra Madre. The

walk starts at the corner of Grand View and Baldwin and proceeds south on Baldwin to Sierra Madre Blvd. All the participants carry a lighted candle and s inq Christmas carols. One l ucky participant gets to carry t h e Christ Child to the manger.

JIM LONGTHORNE WAGKPW - Our family Christmas extension - Each year it's the th ree days a f t e r Christmas spent in an Ecumenical Retreat Facility in Santa Barbara. It avoids the post Chr i s tmas let down and allows space and time for t h e real s p i r i t of Chr i s tmas t o mellow i n t o our lives thru relaxation, fellowship, and reflection.

1986 Input from Danette & Kerry Erickson NGIRC & M6DSG

We don't rush the season but enjoy our tree u n t i l " L i t t l e Christmas", t h e Epiphany January 6 t h . This seems to be a tradition that i s dy ing o u t a s trees go up the day after Thanksgiving and down, the day after Christmas. Our gifts don't appear u n t i l Chr i s tmas morning from Santa who always gets notes, cookies and a carrot for h i s reindeer. Every year some of his w h i t e cotton fur pets caught in the chimney, too! After Christmas Eve Services, N6DSG s t a r t s t o assemble the toys. O n e year, after the children were asleep, he s tar ted to assemble a toy kitchen. It had 141 pieces and screws. I t took him a l l n i g h t , but he w a s all " s m i l e s q ' when t h e ch i ld ren came i n a t 6 AM!

BOB LAYNE - WGLTC - Since coming out t o California our Christrnas/New Year tradition has became a yearly pilgrimase back to the 51st. state, Brooklyn, N e w York, to v i s i t my w i f e ' s Mother and a whole hast of other I t a l i a n relatives.

It's a great thrill for us to return to the "homelandn and see all the Laws, in-laws, and a few Outlaws. As the token Irishman, I have begun to be accepted. This is h e l p e d , of course, by t h e fact t h a t I have learned s u f f i c i e n t " s t r e e t " I t a l i a n that I know what they are s a y i n q about me - and they know that 1 know.

My wife and her Mother make Stroofelies - (phonetic spelling because no one back there 5 s sure h o w to spell it!) - I call them Italian popcorn: you can't eat j u s t one. There's no real recipe, but I promise t o watch t h i s year and w r i t e w h a t they use and w h a t they do. The

end product is fluffy deep fried dough puffs; coated with honey and s p r i n k l e d w i t h those l i t t l e tiny, round cake decorations.

The approach of Christmas Day involves shopping excursions t o A&S (Abraham and Strauss) and a f e w o ther stores in downtown Brooklyn, and preparation for the celebration of The Eve w i t h a host of t r a d i t i o n a l Italian seafood dishes (squid, octopus...).

Continued on next page

(Continued from previous page - BOB LAYNE W6LTC - Christmas Day involves relatives corning to visit and going t o v i s i t relatives - and more food. With Christmas over, i n addition to trying to lose the pounds p u t on by Christmas, prepara t ion now begins for New Year's Eve. This is almost always celebrated at my wife's oldest brother's place in Staten Island. This is a p r e t t y noisy a f f a i r w i t h l o u d mus ic , loud talking and another ton of food!

It's our belief that our p a r t i c i p a t i o n i n this even t has become welcomed because the folks celebrate t h e New Year's arrival with lots of toasting and hoopola; followed 3 hours l a t e r by a celebration in our honor, of California's New Year w i t h more of t h e same.

I usually recuperate sufficiently to see a l i t t l e of t h e Rose Parade and begin t h e r i t u a l of t r y i n g to watch every footba-1 game on T . V .

We return back home t o C a l i f o r n i a with t h e requirement to lose weight and get ready for the n e x t traditional v i s i t i n about 350 days.
