OBJECTIVES• capture and consolidate WA freshwater

species datasets

OBJECTIVES

species datasets• improve data management

i ibilit d ll b ti• improve accessibility and collaboration• provide a tool for management of freshwater

species

Western Australia has a unique assemblage of native freshwater species divided over three

major drainage divisionsmajor drainage divisions

‐ Southwest WA global diversity ‘hotspot’ (Myers et al. 2000)          ‐ 8 out of 10 species endemic (Morgan et al. 1998) ‐ BUT also 9 feral species (Morgan et al. 2004)

HOWEVER: • Lack of easily accessible information on the

distribution of native and feral speciesdistribution of native and feral species• No single resource tool available  • Limited data accessibility and data sharing• Limited data accessibility and data sharing

EXPANDING THE DATABASE

• DoF scientific research exemption to collectfish ‐ condition to provide data on date, location and species

• Collaboration ‐ fish scientists at DOW, UWA, , ,MURDOCH, ECU etc ‐ access to unpublished historical data and/or other existing datasetshistorical data and/or other existing datasets

KEY OUTCOMES  1. System will capture all future research data

2. Improve data management, record keeping standards accessibility and collaborationstandards, accessibility and collaboration

3. Assist managers to ‐ identify knowledge gaps‐ track changes in species distribution‐ avoid duplication of research ‐ focus and prioritise conservation efforts
