The “WA Turf Seminar 2015” will showcase some of the challenges facing the imminent construction and development of major Sports Turf Facilities in the Perth metropolitan area.

The new 60,000 seat Perth Stadium on the Burswood peninsular has resulted in an innovative design ensuring an exceptional event atmosphere and home ground advantage, proudly demonstrating a commitment to a ‘fans first’ stadium that can only be experienced by being there. John Forrest has gained privileged access to the plans and will share his ‘turfies perspective’ into the birth of our next major WA icon.

The seminar will also present information on the progress made by the City of Cockburn in partnership with the Fremantle Dockers Football Club, State and Federal Governments and Curtin University to deliver a $106 million facility that will be the Cockburn Aquatic and Recreation Facility, Cockburn Central West. More commonly known as the Dockers new Elite Training and Administration Facility (ETAF). The largest construction of its kind ever undertaken in Western Australia in 2015.

Like wise the West Coast Eagles Football Club have formalised a partnership with the Perth Football Club and the Town of Victoria Park to develop a new training, administration and community facility at Lathlain Park, due to be completed sometime in 2017.

Notwithstanding the everyday challenges of managing and producing quality turf surfaces, industry members are under ever increasing demands. User expectations of consistent stadium quality turf surfaces in the face of resource constraints or tightly scheduled field commitments are placing unrealistic stress upon the turf and parks managers in Western Australia. Hence reliable supply of quality, play ready sports turf is critical to managing that demand. Greenacres Turf Group, situated on the southern outskirts of Perth has been supplying certified premium turf surfaces from its 100-hectare turf farm for many years. Recently supplying and installing the hybrid ‘eclipse’ turf at nib Stadium in Highgate, Adrian Pitsikas, Co-director of Greenacres will present a rare insight into the production and installation challenges.

Continuing the conversation on from past WA Turf Seminars, Peter Ruscoe from Sports Turf Technology will present an interesting update on current trends focussing on the management of sting nematode affected turf surfaces throughout Perth.

We operate within an increasingly drying environment. The statistics of diminishing annual rainfall are evident. Rainfall in southwest WA has already decreased by around 15 per cent since the mid-1970s. Since 1997 the committed industry lead science team from the UWA Turf Industries Research Steering Committee (TIRSC) has been carrying out world standard research and evaluation of turf grass management challenges at the Shenton Park facility. Dr Pieter Poot will provide a detailed and insightful update into the findings from the current “Soil Amendments” project following its first full year on site. Dr Louise Barton will then present the concluding findings and summary of the “Managing turf grass under <7500Kl/Ha” water allocation project that has been thoroughly conducted over the past 3 years.

The “WA Turf Seminar 2015” will enable us to share knowledge and understanding of all these current issues and provide a forum to workshop solutions and the development of any required changes to maintenance practices. Through this biennial seminar the UWA TIRSC aims to communicate some practical and positive applications that will continue to showcase the economic, health and environmental benefits of turf, as well as future information and research needs, of our vital and vibrant industry.

See you there. Book your seats today!
