Allen – Surname in 1841 Census(Philip, Ann, Elizabeth, Philip, Ann at Home Farm; & John, Francis, Sophia at Mill Farm); in 1851 there was only Francis, at Mill Farm; in 1861 there is a Joseph(1831) from Raunds, a carpenter, with wife & 4.

Allen, Joseph(-1830) – p135-8 after the Enclosure in 1795 Joseph & Philip Allen were the most important farmers in Wadenhoe, Joseph at Manor Farm & renting other bits, and Philip at Home Farm & also renting other bits; their family had been farming in the village for some years; between them farming 750 acres, main employers in the village in 1822; sons Joseph & John.

Allen, Francis(c1820-1888); 2nd wife Caroline Jane(c1854-1898) – p106 Graveyard; son of John(1786); miller & farmer of 247 acre Mill Farm employing up to 14 labourers in 1851/61/71; just The Mill in 1881 (Mill Farm tenant now Edward W Dixie); wife Mary C(1823) in 1861/71/81 was his housekeeper Mary Wiggins from Orton in 1851; have a 27yr old ‘adopted daughter’ Caroline J Roe(c1854) with them in 1881(who was a ‘visitor’ there in 1871); p33, p147 tenant farmer / miller at Mill House & Farm in 19thC; clever, respected, generous; 1881 employed 4 millers; the Allens gave up tenancy of Mill Farm and the Mill to Geo Childs in late 1880s, and the Mill stopped working until Wilfred Ward Hunt restarted it in 1927.

Attewell, Robert Moreland(Bob)(1914-1996) & wife Helen May(1915-2011) – p192-5 bought first cottage ever to be sold in the village, shortly after WW2, & then moved away in 1990; p197 Tony’s reminiscences – Bob worked for London Brick Company in Peterborough (retiring in about 1980);p94 remembered by a tree in Memorial Spinney (pre-1998) & memorial plaque on church wall.

Attewell, Helen May(1915-2011) – wife of Bob; p180 interviewed Alice Bates in 1997 about Alice’s reminiscences; p192-195 her own reminiscences – bought first cottage ever to be sold in the village shortly after WW2, & then moved away in 1990; on village hall committee; 1970-1980 had a craft shop in the old estate office in Pilton Lane(p195 photo); p198 1950s photo; p94 remembered by a tree in Memorial Spinney (pre-1998) & memorial plaque on church wall.

Beasley, Hephzibah(1819-1878) – p108 Graveyard; p149 wife of William(1822), the blacksmith; p149 in 1861 kept a draper’s shop with a lacemaker, a dressmaker, & 3 laundresses; mother of Robert Bright(blacksmith), Lucy A(milliner), Eleanor(telegraphist).

Beasley, Robert Bright(c1851-1936) – p108 Graveyard; husband of Sarah(c1848) the postmistress; blacksmith 1871/81/91/01/11; son of William Beasley the blacksmith & Hepzibah the draper’s shop keeper, brother of Eleanor the first village telegraphist in 1871; father of William John(1879-1916, Royal Engineers, Norfolk), George(1882), (see)Ellen(1883)[& see Albert(1884-6), Edward(1886-8)]; Bright Beasley was at first Parish Council meeting in 1894; 1901 blacksmith, with postmistress wife Sarah, & sons William & George both blacksmithing.

Beasley, Eleanor(1854-1920) – p146 daughter of William Beasley the blacksmith & Hephzibah the draper’s shop keeper, sister of Robert Bright Beesley, Eleanor is telegraphist in the 1871 Census aged 16, Chancellor George Ward Hunt having established the village telegraph office, the first in any village in England, so the Chancellor could be contacted from London by telegram.

Beasley, George(c1882-) – son of Robert Bright & Sarah Beasley; blacksmith 1901/11 with parents.

Beasley, Lucy A(c1848-) - daughter of William Beasley the blacksmith & Hephzibah the draper’s shop keeper, sister of Robert Bright Beesley & Eleanor the first village telegraphist in 1871; milliner 1871.

Beasley, Sarah(c1848-1932) – p108 Graveyard; wife of blacksmith Robert Bright Beesley; village postmistress 1881/91/01/11; mother of William John(1879-1916).

Beasley, Sarah Ann(c1846-) – from Aldwincle, servant to retd farmer Whitney 1861.

Beasley[Beesley], [Driver] William John(1879-1916) - born in Wadenhoe at Aldwincle Lodge, son of Robert Bright & Sarah; censuses 1881/91/01; he followed his father into blacksmithing; by 1902 he had met and married one of Lord Lilford's servants, Annie Elizabeth Langston, who worked at Lord Lilford's London residence; they initially lived there in London, having three children there, but by 1909 he was back blacksmithing in Oundle in Setchell's Yard, and Annie was a cook; they had two further children in Oundle; at the beginning of WW1, at the age of 36, William joined the 487th (East Anglian) Field Company (2/2 East Anglian Field Company) in the 69th Division of the Royal Engineers, as part of the second line Territorial Force over in Norfolk; he was a Shoeing and Carriage Smith (S & C.S.), and Driver (of horses); he died there in Norfolk, aged 38, on 17 Jan 1916, and his grave is in Attleborough Cemetery, Norfolk; the Royal Engineers Territorials helped the War effort at home with home/coastal defences, logistics, construction and repair, forestry, railways, and communication, and a blacksmith/driver came in very useful; he is remembered in Wadenhoe by having his name read out on Remembrance Sunday at the War Memorial.

Beasley, Ellen Hepzibah(c1883-) - daughter of Robert Bright & Sarah; at home 1901; 1911 lady’s maid at Wadenhoe House to Culme-Seymour 1911.

Bell, Hilda Emily(1887-1966) – mother of Ernest; p189-190 is she the Emily that Irene Drake stayed with as an evacuee, on The Green?; p196 is she the Mrs Bell at No.3 The Green who youngest school pupils would go to 3 afternoons a week in the 1950s to watch Andy Pandy etc on her 9” TV; p111 Gravestone; 1939 Register.

Bonner, [Leading Aircraftman] James Albert(1922-1945) - son of Albert Edward William Bonner and Lily Maud Bonner(p192 photo?), of Lilford; LAC (1502282) James Albert Bonner, 7 BSU, RAFVR was killed in action in India on 06-04-45, aged 23; he is buried with a Cross in Kirkee (Khadki) War Cemetery, Grave I.H.09 (Nr.Poona, Bombay), with the inscription "Although you rest so far away, our thoughts are of you every day"; he is remembered on Achurch War Memorial, and on Wadenhoe Church's memorial plaque & memorial watercolour.

Bridges, John –p61-2 inherited Wadenhoe Manor estate from great uncle Brooke to become Lord of the Manor in 1702; he was a renowned county historian; also a barrister and a government revenue collector, he was not in the village much; before 1714 he had transferred the manor to Sir Edward Ward, Chief Baron of the Exchequer.

Briggs, Albert Edward(‘Ted’)(1903-1977) & wife Annie(1906-1984) – pp94,96 bellringer of new peal in 1937, Ted later becoming Tower Captain from 1942 to the 1970s; p125 Ted was a farm worker at Mill Farm, lived all his life in Wadenhoe, and became unofficial ‘Keeper of the Village Lore’; Ted & wife Annie remembered by a tree in Memorial Spinney (pre-1998); p111 Gravestone; memorial plaque on church wall; reminiscences p176-7; p228 poem by Trevor Hold; 1939 Register.

Briggs, Annie – awarded medal in Jan 1916 for 2yrs perfect attendance at school.

Briggs, Arthur & wife Amy – pp184-187 In 1938-9 a 10 yr old Alan Wilson & his mother escaped threat of war & stayed with distant relative Arthur Briggs, first between PO & Weathervane (cottage now gone), then in Pilton Lodge; Arthur became Sgt Briggs leading Local Defence Volunteers (Wadenhoe Home Guard), as he had been a regular soldier with service in India & the 1918 Archangel campaign in Russia (The Kings Head was his HQ).

Briggs, Arthur(c1898-) – Son of Tom(1876) & Agnes(1869); ploughboy living with parents in 1911.

Briggs, Ernest James(1907-1989) & wife Louisa(Louie)(1906-1988) – pp94,99 remembered by a tree in Memorial Spinney (pre-1998); Mrs Louie Briggs held sewing parties at 7 The Green in the 70’s/80’s; p198 1950s photo includes Louie; memorial plaque on church wall; son of William(1869) & Mary(1871); 1911 census with parents; 1939 Register.

Briggs, George(c1829-) – 72 yr old woodman in 1901 with wife Lucy(1838), & son Daniel(1868) a mason’s labourer; 1901 Walter Speechley(1868), a gardener from Thorney, is boarding with them.

Briggs, James(c1833-) – cowman in 1881, with wife Annie B(1834-pre-1891;from Ross&Cromarty)& 4 children Margret(1869),William C(1870),(Isa)Bella K(1872),Alick J(1876); his job is groom in 1891 with different wife Isabella(1842-pre-1901, also Scottish), and with children Bella B & Alick J; 1901 widower ag lab, with daughter Isabella(1874?) & grandson Leonard(1896).

Briggs, Jean – p128 medal for her essay on the Chaffinch, awarded 5/- for her essay ‘Wagtail’ in 1940

Briggs, John - p131 school photo, 1952; p196 in “frequent furious fights” with brother in yard at school.

Briggs, Pte. John Herbert(1886-1914) – son of Frances(Fanny) Trayford(c1860-c1890) & William Briggs(b.c1859); enlisted Northants Regmt 1906; 13th Aug 1914 with 1st Btn Northants Regmt when landed at Le Havre, Normandy, France; killed in action near Ypres fighting with "A" Company on 3rd Nov 1914; awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal; remembered on Panel 43 of the Menin Gate at Ypres in Belgium, & on Wadenhoe War Memorial, & Wadenhoe Church’s memorial plaque & memorial watercolour.

Briggs, Private Wilfred George(1895-1916) - born in Oct 1895 in Aldwincle, his father, Tom(1875), was 22 and his mother, Agnes, was 26; he had three brothers and three sisters; they had moved to Wadenhoe by the time he was 6, where his father worked with horses; by the age of 15 Wilfred was a ploughboy working with horses(1911); on 20th Sept 1914, aged 18, in Oundle, he enlisted in 5th Btn Northamptonshire Regiment(Pioneers), Service No.16054; his Service Record exists in the National Archives; on 31 May 1915 he joined the British Expeditionary Force in France; by 23rd Oct 1915 he was back in England, probably having been injured; by 10th Feb 1916 he was back in the war in France; he died on August 8, 1916, in Somme, Picardie, France, when he was 20 years old; he is buried in Aveluy Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme (Grave H.15), near Thiepval, between Amiens and Arras; he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal; he is remembered on Wadenhoe's War Memorials.

Culme-Seymour, Captain George(1878-1915) - born in Kensington to Mary Georgiana Watson & Admiral Sir Michael Culme-Seymour; in 1897 he joined the 5th Btn The King's Royal Rifle Corps as a Second Lieutenant; in 1900 he was serving in South Africa and then transporting Boer prisoners to India; it was about 1901 that his parents rented Wadenhoe House until after WW1; he was made Captain in 1906, and in 1909 married Janet Beatrix Orr Ewing, daughter of Charles Lindsay Orr Ewing and Hon. Beatrice Mary Leslie Hore-Ruthven; at Wad Ho in 1911; they had a son Charles in 1910 & daughter Angela in 1912; in the 1911 Census they are at Wadenhoe House where there was a 'Captain George's Room'(& p153); on 1st Jan 1914 George was made Adjutant of 9th(County of London) Btn, The London Regiment(Queen Victoria's Rifles); soon they were off to war; they were in Ypres, Belgium in April 1915 suffering many casualties, and witnessing the consequences of the first German chlorine gas attack; he led attacks from the front; on 7th May 1915 an attempt was made by the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry with QVRs in support to recapture Hill 60; Capt. Culme-Seymour was killed, shot through the head leading a company over a trench barricade; he was 37; he was Mentioned in Despatches; he is remembered on Panel 51/53 of the Menin Gate at Ypres in Belgium; he is also remembered on Wadenhoe's War Memorials.

Culme-Seymour 3rd Bart GCB GCVO, Admiral Sir Michael(1836-1920) – p93 with his wife Mary Georgiana(1846-1912) rented Wadenhoe House sometime before the 1901 census, and also Glebe Farm; parents of Captain George who was killed at Ypres in 1915; kept up to 13 hunter horses; much loved and respected for all they did in the village; brass plaques in the Church; the East window is also in memory of Lady Mary Georgiana Culme-Seymour; see household in 1901 Census, with Admiral away wife Mary home, with a niece & a cousin, & a cook and 4 maids; 1911 Admiral home, wife, sons John & (Captain)George(d.1915), daughter & d-in-law, 2 g/dtrs, 2 visitors, 10 servants.

Currall, Private Alfred Ezra George(1899-1918) - born in Oct 1899 in Wadenhoe, to Eliza Busby, age 29, and agricultural labourer Charles Currall, age 32; he had one brother and one sister; by 1911 the family had moved to Stanwick; after joining up and going off to war, Private AEG Currall (G/22159) 6th Bn (The Buffs) East Kent Regiment was killed in action on 20th May 1918; he was one of four soldiers who were killed during a raid from the trenches in front of Acheux in Picardy, France; he was only 18; he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal; he is buried in Mailly Wood Cemetery, Mailly-Maillet, Somme, Picardy (Grave II.M.08); he is remembered on Stanwick War Memorial; he is remembered in Wadenhoe by having his name read out at the War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday.

Hunt, Captain George Ward(1881-1915) - born in Wadenhoe to Margaret Hyde Parker & George Eden Hunt, George had a brother and two sisters; he is 9 in 1891 census when staying with his mother at her parents in Suffolk; his father died when he was 10; in 1901 he received a Commission as Second Lieutenant from 3rd Btn Northants Regmt; he served in the South African (Second Boer) War from 23 Sept 1901 to 26 May 1902, was promoted from Second Lieutenant to Lieutenant, and received the Queen’s medal with clasps for Cape Colony in 1902; he married Daisy Pennington in Jan 1911, living in Courtenhall Grange nr Northampton near his regimental HQ; Berrystead, North St,Oundle (in family from 18thC) was sold in 1911 to Oundle School; son George Edgar Ward Hunt was born Oct 1911; 1912 promoted to Captain & joined 2nd Btn in Malta, serving there until June 1913; p154 Capt Ward Hunt ‘occupied’ The Rectory in 1913/14; daughter Mary Ward Hunt was born in Wadenhoe Old Rectory in early 1913; on 13th Aug 1914 he went with 1st Btn Northants Regmt to France; on 16th Sept 1914 he was badly wounded in the back at the Battle of Aisne by a shell splinter and sent home ["During this day we had still another severe loss amongst the officers, as poor "Mother" Hunt (Captain Ward Hunt) was badly wounded in the back during the afternoon by a shell splinter. One of the very best, I had known him intimately for several years with the 2nd Battalion when I was attached to it in 1910, and at the Depot when he was doing duty there. One of the world's most cheery souls, with a heart of gold, "Mother" was popular wherever he went." (2Lt EJ Needham's account)]; Feb 1915 he returned to France, and on 9th May 1915 led an attack against German trenches at the Battle of Aubers Ridge, and although badly wounded he carried on and was killed ["The poor old boy went out again to the 58th in 1915 and was killed at Aubers Ridge on the fatal 9th May. A very great little gentleman and a really good friend." (2Lt EJ Needham's account)]; in the Battle of Aubers Ridge, 9th May 1915, the 2/Northants were in the Northern Pincer movement, and had 426 casualties that day, of which 12 were officers; more than 11,000 British casualties were sustained on 9 May 1915 alone, the vast majority within yards of their own front-line trench; mile for mile, Division for Division, this was one of the highest rates of loss during the entire war; there is no memorial to the attack at Aubers Ridge; George is remembered on Panel 7 of the Ploegsteert Memorial, which is just over the Belgian border from where he died in Aubers, France; he is also

remembered on Wadenhoe's War Memorials; Daisy went on to marry the Rector of Brailsford, Thomas Bolney Brown, in Dec 1926.

Mills, Private William(1887-1914) - born in Great Raveley, Huntingdonshire, his father, John, was 35 and his mother, Esther, was 36; he had three brothers and two sisters; his father died when he was 5, and his mother when he was 10; the oldest siblings took over family duties; he served in the 2nd Btn Prince of Wales Leinster Regiment; the regiment was in India in 1907 when he was 20 years old; he was with the regiment in India in the Census on April 2, 1911; later that year 2nd Btn moved back to be in Cork, Ireland; they moved to Cambridge on 18 August 1914, & on 12 Sept 1914 (when he was 26) they went to War, landing at St Nazaire, Loire region, France; he was killed in action in Coulommiers, France, within a fortnight; he is buried in Coulommiers Communal Cemetery, East of Paris. [Private, 8255, "1st Btn Leinster Regmt". Grave B.11]; he was posthumously awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal; he had family in Wadenhoe and it must at one time have been regarded as home, and so he is remembered on Wadenhoe's War Memorials.

Moisey, Private Arthur Edward(1886-1918) - born in Oundle district to Rebecca Jane Hankins, age 26, and James Harry Moisey, age 24; in 1891 and 1901 they were living in Stoke Doyle, and then in 1901 when he was 25 they were in Pilton; in 1913 he married Sarah Anne Plowright and they lived in Wadenhoe; he enlisted in the Machine Gun Corps (Service No.89385) in 1914; their son George Edward was born on June 9th 1915 (died 1985); Arthur died on May 2, 1918 near Englebelmer, Somme, Picardie, France, when he was 32 years old; he is buried in Englebelmer Communal Cemetery Extension. Grave C.24, his stone inscribed "Faithful Unto Death"; he is remembered in Wadenhoe and Stoke Doyle.

Morehen, Private Albert(1888-1915) – born in Wadenhoe to Annie Mary Culpin, age 23, and Joseph Henry Morehen, age 25, he had two brothers and eight sisters; his mother died when he was 18; he was living in Wadenhoe in 1891,1901&1911; he enlisted aged 26 in 1914 as a Private with service number 15742 into the 11th Bn. Essex Regiment, formed from volunteers as part of Lord Kitchener's Army; on 30th August 1915 he arrived in the war in France, landing at Boulogne; his ten years younger brother Herbert was there also, in the Leicestershire Regiment, having joined up saying he was 19 the previous year though he was only 16 - Herbert was killed nearby at Bienvillers on 17th Sept 1915, aged just 17; Albert died just 9 days later on 26th Sept 1915, killed in action on the second day of the Battle of Loos; he was 27; twelve attacking battalions suffered 8,000 casualties out of 10,000 men in four hours; this was the largest British battle of 1915 and it lasted until 14th Oct 1915; Albert's name is on Panel 85/7 of the Loos Memorial, which forms the sides and rear of Dud Corner Cemetery, Loos-en-Gohelle, Pas-de-Calais, France; the memorial lists 20,610 names of British and Commonwealth soldiers; he was posthumously awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal; Albert is remembered on Wadenhoe's War Memorials.

Morehen, Sgt Pilot Joseph Stanley(1914-1940) - born April 1914 in Wadenhoe to Alice Ganly & George Joseph Morehen; worked his way up to being a Sergeant (Pilot) in the RAF Volunteer Reserve, Service No.742034, serving with No.6 Flying Training School RAF (VR), Manston, Kent; died in a plane crash on June 8, 1940, when he was 26 years old, crashing in a North American Harvard 1 Trainer, Serial No.P5841, on a 'High Dive Bombing Exercise'; he is remembered on memorials in Tingewick, Buckinghamshire, to where his parents had moved; he is also remembered on Wadenhoe's War Memorials.

took on a farm in Wadenhoe that had previously been run by JW Copley [local farm worker George Hankins (1891-1989) remembers "...a young man named Smalley took it. He was a real modern, go-ahead chap. Unfortunately he got killed in the war."](& p154); 26 yr old Edward had joined the Lincolnshire Yeomanry by Nov 1914; he enlisted No.RTS/1416 in the Army Service Corps(Remounts); he soon arrived in the war in France on Dec 10th 1914; with his horse experience, in Aug 1916, aged 28, he was transferred to the 13th Hussars; that was short-lived, because in Nov 1916 he was transferred to 2nd Btn(103rd Foot) The Royal Dublin Fusiliers, serving with the Expeditionary Force (Service No.28203); they were near the French border in West Flanders, Belgium; in Feb 1917 he was wounded near Loker, and returned to England; on his recovery, in Sept, aged 29, he returned to the war on the Somme, France; he was Killed in Action on 24th Dec 1917 with the 2nd Btn as Brigade Reserve in a railway cutting at St Emilie; at 3.15pm the enemy heavily bombarded the railway cutting in which the Btn was billeted; the bombardment lasted an hour; the calibre of shell used was 5.9"[3 Other Ranks were KiA, 6 were WiA]; Edward was first buried at St.Emilie Rd Cemetery; then later his body was moved to Templeux-le-Guerard British Cemetery (II E 37) between Peronne & Hargicourt; he was posthumously awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal; he is remembered on the Barnack War Memorial, near Stamford; he is also remembered on Wadenhoe's War Memorials; Edward was unmarried.

Spencer, Drummer John Melton(c1885-1915) - born in Wadenhoe to Sarah Ann Melton, age 38, and Henry George Spencer, age 37, he had one brother and four sisters; the family are on the Wadenhoe Census in 1881-1901; ag lab in 1901; his father died in 1909 when John was 24; John enlisted in the Leinster Regiment in Thrapston early in 1914; on 12th September 1914 John was with the 2nd Btn Leinsters when they landed at St Nazaire in France; Drummer John Melton Spencer, Service No.8256, of the 2nd Bn. Leinster Regiment, was Killed in Action at Ypres in Flanders, Belgium, aged 30, on 5th November 1915; he is buried in Voormezeele Enclosures No.1 and No.2, Grave II.C.09, near Ypres, Belgium; John was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal; John is remembered on Wadenhoe's War Memorials.

Walsh, Jerome(c1876-1918) - born in Cork, Ireland , in about 1876, Jerome was a Grocer's Assistant in Cork in 1901, and a Grocer in Bristol, England by 1911; he must have moved to Wadenhoe for some reason and at the outbreak of WW1 he was in Oundle enlisting in the 6th Btn Northamptonshire Regiment; on 5th April 1918 he died in action on the Somme aged 42; he is on the Irish National Roll of Honour linking him to Oundle and The Northamptonshire Regiment; he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal; he is remembered on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, Picardy, France; he is also remembered on Wadenhoe's War Memorials.

Ward, Sir Edward(1638-1714) – English lawyer and judge, best known as the judge in the state trial for piracy of Captain Kidd in 1701;p63,133 Attorney General & Chief Baron of the Exchequer, he purchased the manor of Wadenhoe[& became Lord of the Manor] from John Bridges between 1703 & 1714; when he died his daughter Jane, who had married Thomas Hunt of Boreatton, Shropshire, inherited; buried at Stoke Doyle whose Lordship of the Manor he bought in 1694; his father having got permission from the Bishop of Peterborough, his eldest son, Edward, paid for the rebuilding of the rundown, oversized, Stoke Doyle church(1722-27) and erected in the vestry in 1725 a monument to his father by Flemish Belgian sculptor J.M.Rysbrack(1694-1770) who was to become one of the 3 leading sculptors in London from 1720’s-1740’s.

Ward, Jane(-1716)–with her husband inherited the Manor of Wadenhoe from her father Sir Edward Ward in 1714;married to Thomas Hunt of Boreatton,Shropshire in 1698, starting the Ward Hunt link.
