music which was enjoyed by all the caravan park and went on well into the night with much dancing and merriment.

Of interest to those who like to attend the Bug-ins was the announcement that, as Tasmania will not be running a Bug-in next year and VWCV will be running an event in 2014, in conjunction with our 60th anniversary, NSW will run a Bug-in 2013.

YYou may remember the trouble John Stevens had with his Westy Camper, well after getting Jan's Beetle back on the road just in time to head for Adelaide the curse struck again, for as we were leaving Tailem Bend the bush in the steering column failed, luckily the Beetle was still driveable if a bit scary at times.

As our little group heads back to Melbourne and into winter-like weather it reminds me to be thankful we do not suffer the extremes of a northern hemisphere winter - no winter tyres or antifreeze for us. With daylight saving over and the evenings getting dark earlier it is time to get into the garage and x all those things on your beloved VW that have been left because it was too nice to be inside. I for one have a stack of things to do, from nishing the cupboards in my camper (untouched since last Valla trip) to nishing the new garage so the Splitty can come home and I can start to restore it. If you have any interesting anecdotes of your outstanding jobs let us know.

FFor a change of pace the General Meeting was held at Berwick VW where we had the chance to test drive the new VWs and after the short formal part of the meeting we were treated to a tour of the workshop. An enjoyable night for all who attended and a thank you to Berwick VW for an informative night.

LastLast month saw the return of the VW Jamboree at Caribbean Gardens and a well- deserved thankyou to Anthony and his crew. This year was the tenth year the event has run and it is still getting bigger. As usual there was a wide range of cars on display although it is doubtful that a few of them would pass a roadworthy. This would be a good time to remind everyone who has a vehicle modied beyond the basic mods allowed by Vic Roads that it is a requirement to carry the engineer's certicate with you.

FFinally I have to put the record straight. Some of the members may, unjustly I think, believe I have an unfair bias towards air cooled VWs. Well I must now come clean and admit I now own a watercooled VW!

That’s all for now as I am writing this on a tablet which contrary to what the adverts say is not as easy as on a normal computer.

Michael Cronin

Greetings one and all!

I am writing this on the way back from the Easter Bug-in in South Australia where Jan Steven's Beetle won Car of the Show plus a few other prizes. Jan is pretending not to care but I am sure I have seen her walking around with a big grin on her face. Well done, Jan and a special mention to John who did all the cleaning and polishing.

UnUnfortunately the weather was not the best which discouraged people from going to the beach, probably a good thing as the local beach was Maslins (Google it if you don’t know its history). The nice surprise at the Bug-in registration was the live

mystery motor for $10 and we’d take it home and use it for parts to keep the van running. This was a common occurrence in the 70s and into the 80s.

As time went on, our equipment, money situation and skill levels improved. Bob was a great source of VW knowledge and would often be generous with parts deals. Eventually I worked there with them for several months in ’73 and ’74. This was great experience for a young student and this is where I found my rst car, a 1962 Microbus with a seized gearbox. It wouldn’t even roll, which made it very difficult to get home!

LLater into the 70s the semi-regular Saturday trip also included a VW wreckers in Moorabbin, called Muter and Hawkins, which was a small wreckers at the back of a panel shop.

In 1976, when Motor Producers ceased production, lots of wreckers purchased VW surplus stock, parts, etc. For example, you could buy brand new Type 3 oor carpets for $10 at Volksking. The walls there were stacked with crates of VW stock – I wish I’d bought the lot!

OnOn one of these trips, at Muter and Hawkins, there was a complete Type 3 body shell, which had been pulled off the production line because of a hand-sized dent on the roof, which would have made it unacceptable for sale as a new car. I bought it as a project and began the slow task of rubbing back the light surface rust in preparation for painting. Later on my brother was also involved and we purchased the necessary parts like a oor pan, motor, interior, etc. In the end, he bought it from me and nished it off. This was the last Type 3 to be built in Australia and my brother and his then wife drove it to work every day. In the late 80s it was fully resrestored to concours condition with a little help from me on the motor. Of course, by this stage, we were much more experienced. (It is worth remembering that this is akin to today nding a three year old Passat body and in effect, ‘building’ a car, which would of course be a mammoth task, given the sophisticated technology of modern cars.)

After this restoration, a keen VW enthusiast saw it at the VW Nationals in 1989 and purchased it from my brother. Hopefully, someone in Sydney is still enjoying it!

Note: There is a photo of this red Type 3 in our book.

Lloyd Davies

Continuing on from last month’s report, most of you would know that I have been involved with VW since I was sixteen (1971) when my brother bought a Kombi and I became the chief mechanic. This was quite a difficult situation, as we had no tools to speak of, apart from those lying around the garage – old tools such as those you’d use on your bike, and mostly imperial. This could possibly explain why I am a rabid HAZET collector!

WWe used to do regular Saturday trips to various VW wreckers, rstly to Imported Car Wreckers in Huntingdale where Bob and Ron would sell and haggle over various goodies we wanted to purchase. Sometimes on the way home we’d also go to Volksking at Airport West. My brother was an apprentice and I was still at school, so we were always short of cash. Bob at Imported would sell us a 36Hp

Jan and I were part of a small convoy of Kombies that left Melbourne early on Friday 2 March 2012. The wild weekend weather forecast looked a bit ominous but in true VWCV style we were not going to let a bit of rain and wind get in our way. The rst stop was Ross Harrison’s Rasta Surf Shop in Barwon Heads where we caught up with Ross and admired the new t out of his shop. From there it was on to Lorne and an alfresco lunch on the foreshore in 50 knot on shore winds that sent hats and the leafy salad ying. We arrived at the Kennett River Holiday Park after a magnicent white knuckle drive along the edges of the Great Ocean Road. Evan had hishis front seat passenger Peter hanging on grimly most of the way and on arriving at the park Peter had to have a Bex and a good lie down.

We were among the rst group to arrive but as the afternoon wore on the crowd of VWs slowly grew. Harvey, Edith and Bernd had already set up camp and later on John G arrived and in usual style set up a marquee annexe that had been generously loaned by Lloyd and Lyn who could not attend the weekend. At least we could get out of the rain if it eventually arrived. Friday night was spent swapping VW stories, having the occasional beer or glass of red and generally getting into the Kennett River groove.

The rain came late on Friday night and by Saturday morning things were a bit damp. Unfortunately the surf was poor so we had a less than energetic start to the day. As the Kombi Chook was about to experience a milestone birthday in two days’ time she had chosen to celebrate that event by organising a VW High Tea on Saturday afternoon for her VW friends. It was a doubly important day as Dean W, who also attended at the camp-out, was celebrating his birthday on that very day. As far as supplies for the VW High Tea were concerned, we had lled the Kombi to the gunnels with biscuits, cakes, bread, bunches of asparagus, a box of cucumbers, cucumbers, different teas, tea pots, saucers, cups, chocolates, smarties and a host of other interesting comestibles. We issued verbal invitations to all VW people who were there, set up the marquee, not necessarily Windsor style, boiled the water, made the tea and got stuck into it. Jan and Dean thoroughly enjoyed the event, the well wishes received and the company of friends. The rain continued and one less than courageous member (who drives a white Kombi and has a thing about dwarves) decided to pack up and go home. The others told him what they thought of his actions, braved out the rain and had a very enjoyable evening.

Sunday saw the surf become good but for many it was too late as inevitably the camping gear had to be packed up. By late morning the weather had started to improve however it was also too late to dry out the gear and we had to leave that until we got home. The trip back along the magnicent Great Ocean Road is, I think, more scenic than the trip down. You seem to get a better perspective of the vastness and magnetism of the ocean. We took a roundabout route home via the Japanese importer KYO in Ocean Grove and, strangely, did not spend too much money. Even though the weather was more than a bit crook we really enjoyed the weekend, the camaraderie and especially the VW High Tea.

NextNext year is the 10th Kennett River Camp Out and a very special event is already being planned. Stay tuned for updates.

It is with great sadness that the club was informed last month of the passing of George Reynolds, passionate Volkswagen Club of Victoria Member (on the rst committee in 1954) and Volkswagen Motor sport pioneer, being a class D winner of the 1962 Armstrong 500 at Philip Island in a VW Beetle with Jim McKeown and out-right winner of the 1964 Bathurst 500 (although outright winners were not technically acknowledged at the time) with Bob Jane in a Ford Cortina Mk.I GT in only the second race at Mount Panorama.

I was honoured to represent the club by attending the funeral and the oral arrangement sent by the Club was appreciated in an email of thanks from his widow. I can assure you he was a great man in the history of our club and a stalwart of our marque.

The career of George Reynolds was legendary. He was born on 8 May 1928 and his career extended from the late 1950s into the late 1960s. He was known primarily as a touring car and sports car driver.

George was best known for competing in a VW Beetle in numerous car trials (Ampol and Mobilgas - see George was best known for competing in a VW Beetle in numerous car trials (Ampol and Mobilgas - see photo with Oval VW) in the 1950s and Formula Vee Racing in the 1960s! He also competed in major interna-tional rallies (seen here No.19 at the 1993 rerun of the London to Sydney Marathon).

He is pictured here with his wife Sophia next to his famous red bug at the start of the 1996 Bathurst Legends Rally. He was also known for his attention to detail (he worked as a dental professional) and his knowledge of Volkswagen engineering produced specialised parts to improve performance of Volkswagen cars all over the world. His manufacturing was based at his business in Mitcham.

George was a personal friend to many a VW enthusiast all over the country and would regularly give his time freely to chat about Volkswagens and his involvement in their development and motorsport. Typically, George would open his farm up to hold VWCV Christmas functions and the club has lost a life member who always gave so much to us all.

The club newsletter, the ‘Wagensville News’ has been a great road map of club activities for nearly 60 years. I am still looking for more old editions of the News to supplement the rich documented history (in preparation by the Historian) of our club. So if you have any old copies in the cupboard which you do not need any more please pass them on to me and I will give them a new life. The items below will hopefully give you an insight into some of the issues of the day and prompt a few memories of our long term members which I again wish to share with you. I hope you enjoy these extracts which are a decade apart for contrast and please feel to contact me if you can help in recording the club’s developing history.and please feel to contact me if you can help in recording the club’s developing history.

……in April 1983Tony Barton was the Club President, Jon Edsell was Vice President, Steve Kosa was Secretary and Neil Tattersall was Treasurer. Again the committee had a comprehensive program for the year. The highlights of this time were again the motorsport events in organized by Steve Kosa (Shamateur Rally) and the Phillip Island Auto Racing Club (PIARC) Lap Dash at Calder Raceway, all for May.

The ‘News’ carried two articles about the Easter Bug-In held in Sydney and an article about the Great Treasure Hunt organized by Steve Kosa. Not a big month for the ‘News’ but interesting - For sale – 1957 Oval Window beetle. Black, One owner since new, Good Condition, Workshop Manual, $1000 o.n.o. phone after 6pm.

……in April/May 1972KevinKevin Hurford was the Club President, David Evans was Vice President, Glen Fyfe was Secretary and Paul Higgins was Treasurer. The highlights of the month were the preparation for attending Calder Rallycross, the Classic Rally run by the Holden Club and the Club Championship Motorkhana run at Keilor under the power lines. Motorsport was strong and the competition with other clubs was erce!

TheThe ‘News’ carried articles about the Club Championship and Club Motorkhana Championship results with P Burke, B Reed, Glen Fyfe and Kevin Hurford leading the Club Championship and R Brown, S Smith and John Mayo leading the Motorkhana Championship. Also of note were the fundraising efforts on a purely social Party Night in March raising $32! The dollar went a long way in those days.

If anyone has some photos or more stories around these items, I would like to hear from you soon.
