Our History and place in the city …

Napier, a city of 57,000 is situated on the shores of Hawke Bay. The sun rises over the blue water and surf of the bay each morning. Marine Parade with its iconic Norfolk pine trees and the Rotary walk- way along the shore, has an increasing number of activities available to the public. The tallest structure in the CBD is the tower of the Cathedral.

The first wooden church built on the site in 1862 became too small for its congregation by the mid-1880s. Consideration for the construction of a Cathedral was mooted and fund raising started. The Cathedral was consecrated in July 1886.

This impressive brick building served the city well till the Hawke’s Bay earthquake struck on 3 February 1931 and the Cathedral fell into ruins in minutes, as did the “new” Synod hall and the Deanery. Within 2 months of the earthquake, a plan to build a wooden temporary church was under consideration and in October 1931 it was dedicated.

The foundation stone for the new Cathedral was laid in October 1955 and the new church was built from east to west to join, and then replace, the temporary building; and in October 1967 the completed and fully paid for Cathedral was consecrated.

Waiapu Cathedral has always valued its role as the spiritual heart of the Napier community.

It is also used as a venue for many civic occasions including the Art Deco service each February, school prizegivings, and it was a place of tranquillity and prayer at the time of the Napier siege in 2009. The unique acoustics make it a sought after venue for visiting artists for concerts and recitals.

The Cathedral is unique in that it houses the cathedras of the Bishop of Waiapu and the Bishop of Aotearoa. The Maori Chapel is located in the eastern section of

the sanctuary and contains the tukutuku panels and carved altar from the original chapel.

The organ, was cleaned and rebuilt during 2012, and was dedicated on 4 April 2013. It is one of the finest church pipe organs in the country. The choir plays an important role in presenting appropriate music for all occasions.

Ormond Chapel sited on Hospital Hill, carries an Historic Places Trust Category One designation. Originally it was the main schoolroom for the Academy for Young Gentlemen which occupied a site further along Napier Terrace from 1864.

It became the Napier Grammar School in 1867 till it closed in 1918.

Fanny Ormond bought the building and had it shifted to the present site next to her parents’ home. Once established there, it was donated to the St John’s Parish in memory of her brother who was killed in France in 1916.

It is one of the oldest educational buildings existing in NZ and one of the oldest buildings in Napier. It is unique in that its construction was for secular purposes, later being converted for ecclesiastical use.

The Chapel is built of kauri and has been modified and enlarged using rimu and pine.

Diocese of Waiapu

Waiapu means “abundant waters” and the Diocese was named from the river that flows under Mt Hikurangi on the East Coast, where Anglican mission began in the 1830’s. Waiapu has strong relationships with Tikanga Maori with both Te Tairawhiti and Te Manawa o Te Wheke. The Diocese encompasses all of the Bay of Plenty from Omokoroa in the north and across to Taupo and Mt Ruapehu, all of Eastland and Hawke’s Bay to the Manawatu Gorge in the south. It has a total population of about 240,000. The Diocese is divided into three regions – Bay of Plenty, Eastland and Hawke’s Bay. Major Diocesan activities are rotated round the diocese. Synod, Standing Committee and other groups meet in a variety of places.

The ethos of this sprawling rural and urban Diocese is open and inclusive of people from all backgrounds. It is ecumenical in its understanding of the Christian faith and is committed to a ministry of all the baptised.

Cathedral Staff The Dean of Waiapu leads a team of experienced clergy and committed volunteers within the Cathedral community. The Reverend Margaret Thompson is our full-time non-stipendiary Cathedral Priest- Administrator. Whilst Margaret is employed primarily for a role within the Parish Office, she also offers additional voluntary hours and regularly participates on Sundays with leading Cathedral worship, and assists with Diocesan liturgical preparation. Currently there are also five actively “retired” priests who volunteer their time assisting with worship at the Cathedral and Ormond Chapel, and offer pastoral care to parishioners and rest-home or retirement village residents.

the Reverend Dorothy Brooker, TSSF, convenes the Cathedral Kids (Sunday School) team and offers “Easter Discovered” and “Christmas Discovered” programmes for children;

the Reverend Erice Fairbrother, OHC, offers Spiritual Director, and, with the Rev’d Dorothy Brooker, facilitates the ‘Diocesan Spirituality Centre’ located within the Cathedral;

A former Bishop of Waiapu, the Right Reverend Murray Mills, assists with leading small group short-course studies; Murray is also the Diocesan Archivist. The role of Cathedral Director of Music is currently vacant, however we are fortunate to have the skills and talents of Anthony Tattersall who is acting as Choir Director, and Gary Bowler (a former Director of Music) as organist. Malcolm Smith retired from his paid part- time role as the Cathedral Verger in 2013, and now volunteers two mornings a week to assist with the care of the building and grounds, along with teams of other volunteers who mow lawns, arrange flowers, launder the linen, and polish the silver- ware. Basil Brooker is the voluntary Cathedral Events Co-ordinator responsible for liaising with booking enquiries for concerts, and dealing with managing events.

The Deanery The Deanery is situated on the hill above the Cathedral, a four minute climb up the steps or one minute drive. It has a commanding view across the city to the south, Cape Kidnappers and of the sun rising from the water of the bay each morning. It was built in 1956 and has three bedrooms, sun porch, lounge, kitchen and bathroom and a self-contained flat below the living area with its own entrance. It has been modernised over the years and now boasts a large outside deck by the front door; and the interior was re-painted early 2017.

The garden is well established and work has been done to provide car ports and turning/ parking space for vehicles. The Deanery is in the zone for Napier Central and Intermediate schools, Napier Girls’ and Boys’ High schools and for co- education, William Colenso College. The campus of the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) is at

Taradale. The Anglican schools of Woodford House and Hereworth are in Havelock North and St Matthew’s Primary School is in Hastings, and the Presbyterian colleges of Iona and Lindisfarne are in Havelock North and Hastings respectively. Te Aute College is 45 minutes south of Napier and Hukarere Girls’ College is 15 minutes north of Napier.

What Napier and Hawke’s Bay offer a family ... In the early 16th century, Ngati Kahungunu people migrated to the Napier area from Mahia and remain the tribal identity of Hawke’s Bay. Napier developed around its port, initially for the whaling industry but has a very diverse use now. Hawke’s Bay has a Mediterranean type climate with warm summers and mild winters. Gardening is a joy in this climate. While sheep farming and orchards were the backbone of the Bay, wine and olives now have an important role in the economy. There are a variety of activities for those who like the outdoors. Many kilometres of cycling/walking tracks have been and continue to be developed, tramping in the ranges is not far away, skiing in the winter at Mt Ruapehu is easily accessible and white water rafting. Sandy beaches can be found at Westshore, Ocean Beach and Waimarama. Central Hawke’s Bay also boasts long sandy, safe beaches. Reserves at Tutira, Shine Falls and Boundary Stream provide places of natural beauty and peace and quiet just a short drive to the north of Napier. The gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers is always an interesting place to visit in the summer. Te Mata Peak behind Havelock North provides a view across the plains to the Kaweka and Ruahine ranges and north to Mahia. Napier was almost totally destroyed by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on the morning of 3 February 1931. Fire followed the quake and destroyed what was left. Major loss of life occurred and also a change in the landscape. The tidal lagoon at Ahuriri was raised about 6 feet which meant a deep water port needed to be built. Napier Airport stands today on what was the lagoon. Once drained, the area to the south of Napier also became land that the town could spread onto. The rebuild of the town was completed in two years and took on the Art Deco look which is such a draw card today. Napier prides itself on its vibrancy and cafes abound in the CBD. It is a popular stop on the cruise ship circuit. There is an abundance of good sporting facilities and many musical activities to be involved with. There is a good library in the central city. The Marine Parade has an increasing number of activities for all ages and a popular variety market on a Sunday morning.

Cathedral Parish of St John the Evangelist, Napier

Parish Consultation – Sunday 7th May, 2017

Introduction: A group of approximately 50 parishioners attended the consultation.

This followed a service celebrating the Patronal Festival of the Parish at 10.00 am which

was also attended by all Staff, Board of Trustees and pupils of Woodford House.

The process emphasised the need to hear everyone’s voice on the five questions. What

follows is the summary consensus. [Each group was initially asked to brain-storm the

answers to each question recording all suggestions. Then each group member placed a tick

by the top three for them. The top three for each question from each group were then

collated onto sheets for the 5 questions and again all participants were invited to place a

dot beside their top three for each question.]
