New environmental farming systems advisor for Waikato

New Environmental Farming Systems Advisor for the Waikato Regional Council,

Electra Kalaugher, takes up the position in March

University of Waikato doctoral student Electra Kalaugher will take up the position of Environmental Farming Systems Advisor with the Waikato Regional Council (WRC) in March.

Ms Kalaugher will be joining a team under Environmental Farming Systems manager Alan Campbell, working to help make dairying and horticulture in the region more sustainable.

“It will involve a lot of networking within the industry, sharing information and catalysing initiatives that will support farmers, both in making the way they farm more sustainable and in coming to grips with the changing regulatory environment,” said Ms Kalaugher.

Ms Kalaugher’s focus on agriculture began after a summer research project in 1993 when she stayed on a number of cropping farms around Canterbury, and had discussions with farmers about the issues they were facing.

After completing a B.Sc in Ecology at Otago University in 1994, Ms Kalaugher then worked in several countries and raised her family. While living in Rome she held an agricultural biodiversity position with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. A few years later she worked in The Netherlands, producing a magazine featuring sustainable agriculture case studies from around the world.

Ms Kalaugher completed a Masters degree through Massey University in 2009 and started a PhD at Waikato University the following year.

She said her PhD, which focussed on adaption of New Zealand dairy farms to climate change, leads well into the position with WRC.

“Climate change is of course only one of the challenges facing NZ farmers, and the way I’ve approached the study has been both computer modelling of dairy farms and having some really good conversations with farmers about the way they see their systems and what the main challenges are, to understand where climate change fits into the picture.

“It became really clear to me during those conversations especially, that adapting to the changing regulatory environment might be even more of a challenge than adapting to changes in climate, and I’d like to do what I can to help support farmers in this process.”

Ms Kalaugher said she is sure there will be a lot of challenges in her new position but believes that it is possible to farm sustainably, both from an economic and environmental perspective.

Mr Campbell said Ms Kalaugher will have big shoes to fill in this role.

“The previous two incumbents, Gabi Kaufler and Kate Ody, initiated among other things the Farm Dairy Effluent Code of Practice and the Effluent Expo.

“Both initiatives are nationally significant and were built on collaboration with DairyNZ and the wider dairy and effluent management industries.

“These kinds of projects are a hallmark of the Environmental Farming Systems team at Waikato Regional Council and Electra’s track record in working with others means we’re very pleased to have persuaded her to join us.”

Young Farmers gearing up for regional fi nalYoung farmers across the Waikato and

Bay of Plenty are gearing up to battle it out in the ANZ Young Farmer of the Year regional final on February 16.

Four district finals were held through December to find the top contestants to compete at the regional final.

Waikato/Bay of Plenty Young Farmers Club president Jason Te Brake said competitor entries were up from previous years.

“Sixty members participated this year, ranging from serious competitors vying to advance to the National Grand Final, to first time entrants looking to develop their experience, to members who enjoy just getting out and challenging themselves each year.

“This is an increase on previous years, and also the largest participation numbers from any of the seven regions in the country.”

Young farmers working in the dairy industry dominated the district finals with James Courtman (Hauraki), Josh Cozens (Eastern Bay), Wayne Hoffman (Waihi) and James Booker (Ngarua) all earning a spot in the regional contest. North King Country representatives, Dwayne Cowan and Sophia Clarke, both involved with sheep and beef farming also earned places along with Cambridge fertiliser representative James Bryan. Hamilton city rural bank manager and previous Grand Final runner-up Tim van de Molen secured a position in the regional final too.

The Waikato/Bay of Plenty ANZ Young Farmer of the Year regional final will be held at St Paul’s Collegiate School in Hamilton. Tickets for the evening show are available from local ANZ bank branches. Earlybird tickets cost $50.

Sixty members from the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Young Farmers Club competed in this year’s ANZ Young Farmer of the Year district finals. Eight district finalists will go forward to the

regional final at St Paul’s Collegiate School in Hamilton on February 16

AgriKids and TeenAg teams will also be competing on the day in a bid to advance to the Grand Final.

Mr Te Brake said this year’s theme is bridging the gap between the urban and rural communities.

“This is a great opportunity for both urban folk and rural folk to experience the excitement of a regional ANZ Young Farmer

contest, as the top up-and-coming farmers from Waikato/Bay of Plenty compete for the honour of representing the region at the upcoming National Grand Final.”

“The practical day is free and a great day out for the entire family with entertaining modules planned that will

challenge the contestants, as well as the famous head-to-head Agrisports events where the contestants compete in a race against each other to compete a series of activities,” he said.

“The evening show is an entertaining evening for the whole family and is great value for money with the tickets including a three-course buffet dinner and the show.”

The winner of the regional final, announced during the show, will go onto the ANZ Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final in Auckland from May 15-18.

Farming is all about the land — looking after it as a custodian and earning a living from its cultivation. But there is more than one way to make the most of the beauty and unique qualities of your farm — as Waikato farmer and adventure tourism entrepreneur Simon Worsp can attest.

Love your chooks?

It helps to have at your disposal some of the most interesting natural features in the region, of

course. Simon and his wife Rosie live on a far-from-conventional block of land in the north-west Waikato — one blessed with lush native bush, cool streams, waterfalls and two-and-a-half kilometres of limestone caves.

Centuries or even millennia ago this cave system was even bigger, but a collapse during New Zealand’s prehistory has sculpted part of the land into a rugged wonderland of cliffs and hollows, reminiscent of some of Peter Jackson’s famous Middle-Earth cinematography. Over the years a verdant covering of native bush has draped the area in green.

Simon has lived close to the land all his life — his father was a farmer

A world of adventure ~ all on one farm

in rural Northland, near Whangarei, working a piece of land purchased by his great-grandfather, a sea captain in colonial times. After leaving school he settled in the Waikato, purchasing the property in 1978 which is now home to Adventure Waikato.

From the beginning, the beautiful natural features of the farm were

always something special. But Simon was dedicated to running a working farm, not a tourism venture. He grew the basics, while still keeping up with his own favourite pastimes such as hunting, and the caves and waterfalls in his ‘backyard’ were an open secret.

Then came a call from the famous Brooklands Lodge, a local resort who

wanted to expand their programme of activities.

The owners of Brooklands had heard about the limestone caverns on Simon’s property, and asked whether he would be interested in showing visitors through these underground cathedrals of glow worms, stalactites and crystal formations.

“We bought some torches and hard hats, and away we went,” says Simon

That was back in 1995, and the slow, steady growth of Adventure Waikato has kept pace with the year-in, year-out demands of running a successful farm.

As well as introducing people to the wonders of the glow-worm cave and Ruru cave (so called because native owls nest around its entrance), Simon added clay bird shooting, abseiling, an immense 220-metre flying fox and

team-building activities to his repertoire, creating an engaging experience all on one property.

Groups — from classes of school children all the way through to corporate teams — have come to encounter a little slice of prehistoric wilderness tucked away in the Waikato. It’s not without reason that Simon calls one of his walking trails the ‘Jurassic Stroll’ — it includes plants long extinct in other parts of the world, ancient rock formations, fossils, and giant cave weta.

No wonder that one keen schoolteacher has brought her class to visit Simon’s little piece of paradise for twelve consecutive years!

Being situated on a working farm has also given Adventure Waikato a point of difference. Simon’s knowledge of down-to-earth Kiwi farming has led to a few interesting team games being developed

here, including the ever-popular ‘human dog trials’ — a challenge which puts people in the place of the trusty border collie, herding sheep through a series of obstacles.

For a lifelong farmer who never set out to create an adventure tourism park, Simon has done amazingly well. He and Rosie, along with abseiling instructors Tim Reep and Rob Horsley, enjoy meeting people and introducing them to the natural wonders just beyond the beaten track.

Today they balance a renowned, safe and always interesting tourist and team-building destination with a farm carrying on the generational tradition of Simon’s family.

David has received honours for a sporting career that has allowed him to travel the world and even led him to

his wife, a Devon dairy-farm girl whom he met at the Royal Welsh Show in 1989.

Since winning his first Golden Shears title at age 24, he has raked up 16 Golden Shears open titles at Masterton and 17 NZ open titles at Te Kuiti, as well as five world champion titles and seven world team titles — a grand total of 614 open wins worldwide. He was awarded Member of the NZ Order of Merit in 1999 and Officer of the NZ Order of Merit in 2007.

Not bad going for someone who had no desire to be a shearer. A top woodwork student at Piopio College, David wanted to become a builder.

“I was more interested in carpentry than shearing but when I left school there were no building jobs so I learnt to shear like my

older brothers, John and Geoff and it was fatal — I got the shearing bug,” says David.

He began his career in Geoff’s shearing gang then headed off to shear in Southland and the Bay of Plenty before doing a stint in Australia. After 12 months he finally returned home to Te Kuiti — to arguably the most skilled shearing environments in the country.

nobody would ever win more. It was always a goal to surpass six wins at the Golden Shears and I was dead keen to learn — my brother John taught me and I guess I was a good student.”

“I loved the challenge because it’s not just the other competitors, it’s about competing against yourself — always trying to be better. It’s physically very demanding so it’s important that you enjoy it.”

“Shearing is unique because it’s one of the few jobs where you’re paid for what you do — the more sheep you shear the more you earn. It’s a hell of an incentive to perform and get better and being able to turn it into a sport in the weekend is great.”

David has always been passionate about helping young shearers coming through.

“There’s no use in getting to the end of your life and not having passed your knowledge on. Some say it’s foolish to teach potential competitors but my philosophy has always been that if someone is good enough to beat you, then good on them.”

David balances a sporting career with farming and currently fattens heifers on his 266-acre farm on the edge of Te Kuiti and manages to find time for his work in research and development for UK based company Lister Shearing.

He also has a strong entrepreneurial streak and he and his brother John have their own ‘Fagan’ brand of specialty

shearing jeans manufactured by Acto Agriculture in Auckland and distributed worldwide.

Turning 51 this year, David still loves competing and this passion appears set to flow down through the generations with his son Jack, aged 20 also gearing up for shearing success.

They competed on the UK circuit together in July this year

and father and son won both senior and open events with Jack winning a total of nine senior events.

“It’s really interesting because Jack is almost a mirror image of how I was at his age — he wasn’t interested in shearing. He appeared to be more keen on joining the airforce but he tried shearing and now he’s hooked as well.”

The farm’s unexpected journeyby Rose Rees-Owen

The Alexander family’s life changed forever when location scouts for the blockbuster movie, The Lord of the Rings came to visit their sheep and beef farm near the town of Matamata. It has since become one of the main attractions in New Zealand with visitor numbers booming with the release of director, Peter Jackson’s prequel, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Ian along with his sons Craig, Dean and Russell are now part owners of one of the main attractions in New Zealand, Hobbiton Movie Tours.

With 44 permanent hobbit  holes it’s not hard to imagine the  furry footed and short statured creatures roaming the farm.

“These opportunities don’t  come

around very often and when they arise you have to take them,” says general manager of Hobbiton, Russell Alexander.

The family moved from Taranaki to Matamata in 1978 to a 1,250 acre property. Ian grew up on a farm and continued doing what he enjoyed and began a beef and sheep farm.

Hobbiton Movie Set ToursExperience the real Middle-earth with a visit to the Hobbiton Movie Set, the bucolic setting for The Shire that featured in the Peter Jackson directed films, The Lord of the Rings. The set has now been permanently rebuilt for the The Hobbit.

Your guide will escort you through the ten acre site recounting fascinating details of how theHobbiton Movie Set was created.

Hobbit holes, The Green Dragon Inn, The Mill and other structures can be viewed and you will see how this beautiful piece of Waikato farmland was transformed into The Shire from Middle-earth.

NEED BIG BOYS TOYS

Even though the family could safely retire from farming they still have around 13,000 sheep and 300 Angus beef cattle in conjunction with the tourism venture.

Russell runs the tourism operation while his brother Craig is in charge of the farm.

“We don’t farm any differently since the sets were built,” says Russell and the family shear all the sheep themselves.

Set construction began in 1999 and as it was only meant to be a temporary structure, 37 hobbit holes were made out of untreated timber, ply and polystyrene with the New Zealand army contracted to build 1.5 kilometres of road onto the site.

When filming finished New Line Cinema began to tear down the sets before the Alexander’s sought the rights for them to stay and host tours.

The Alexander family struck a deal with Peter Jackson to build a permanent set for the prequel trilogy of The Hobbit and Mr Jackson is now in partnership with the Alexanders.

More holes were constructed and Russell says the definite highlight is the pub, The Green Dragon serving hobbit style drinks, Girdle Fine Ale, Sackville Cider, Oak Barton Ale or Southfarthing Ginger Ale in a ceramic mug.

The pub features in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and while all interior shots were filmed in studios in Wellington, Russell assures it’s authentic.

While it has transformed the Alexander’s life it has also turned Matamata with a population of around 6,300 into a tourism hub. Six per cent of visitors to New Zealand, or around 150,000 people, cite the Lord of the Rings as their main reason for coming here.

With the release of the first Hobbit movie in the trilogy, An Unexpected Journey, visitor numbers are expected to be even higher than at the height of the Lord of the Rings tourism boom.

Four hundred thousand are expected to visit the town according to the Matamata Tourism office in the coming year and Russell says it has been hectic doubling their number of tours to 22 a day.

Farmers have shown an enthusiastic response to a unique new cricket bait launched last autumn, setting the scene for more market growth this year, according to the company behind the innovation.

Crickoff Pro is a ready-to-apply treated whole wheat bait, comprising the active ingredient malathion.

Ease of application has been a major selling benefi t, as farmers can broadcast the bait onto paddocks affected by black fi eld cricket infestations, says pest eradication expert Stephen Finch. He and partner David Percival recently formed a new company called Pest Go to market this and other pest control products.

Crickoff Pro was their fi rst product launch, and sold well last summer and autumn.

“We had a relatively quiet launch — we didn’t want create too much noise about it until we got our heads around manufacturing and distribution, but it was very well received in the market and we’re looking forward to selling more of it this year, depending on how much pest pressure is about.”

“Farmers like it because it is just so simple to use,” says Finch. “Just buy it and apply it — no messing around.”

Application at the recommended rate of 10 — 11 kg per hectare shows a rapid and signifi cant reduction of all mid to late stage nymphs (juveniles) and all adult crickets.

If populations are initially very high farmers can be confi dent of effective knockdown by applying just a little more — 15kg per hectare.

Crickoff Pro has been developed over the past three years with rigorous lab and fi eld testing to ensure it meets both ERMA and NZFSA regulatory authority specifi cations, as well as ensuring it has minimal non-target species and environmental effects. Of course, another huge aspect of development has been making the bait attractive to crickets!

Bait stability and weathering tests have all returned positive results and the company is doing further research to see whether the current seven-day withholding period can be reduced.

Crickets hit for six by new product

The battle against insect pests is a constant one for many farmers, but a new weapon is now available to combat a particularly insidious creepy-crawly — the common cricket.

Arthritis is just a term for joint infl ammation. Any disease that includes the suffi x ‘itis’ confi rms it is an infl ammatory disease. Arthritis is different from other forms of joint infl ammation as it involves the gradual destruction of joint tissue. Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterised by the loss and damage to joint cartilage- the tough connective tissue that protects the ends of bones. Over time cartilage erodes and this plus associated infl ammation can damage the bone surfaces. In the past this was called ‘wear and tear’ arthritis as it was thought that it was caused by the gradual wearing down of cartilage much like the wearing down of the soles of a shoe.

There are many factors that increase the risk of OA including being female, age, nutrition, genetics, injury, obesity, and joint deformities. We now know that OA is a specifi c disease process more likened to corrosion than erosion. . It seems that the process, while infl uenced by trauma and genetics is primarily a disease where free radicals damage joint cells called chondrocytes. These are the cells that maintain cartilage and when they die this leads to the erosion of cartilage. The immune system then attempts to repair the damage and this leads to joint infl ammation. The result is the pain, swelling and lack of joint function that we know as OA.

The main medical approach is anti-infl ammatory medication which temporarily restricts the activity of joint immune cells thus reducing infl ammation and relieving pain and swelling. Nutritional therapy has a similar goal but uses naturally occurring compounds that can help repair cartilage while reducing infl ammation. The natural anti-infl ammatory compounds include fi sh oils, some botanical compounds from grape seeds, turmeric and ginger and a long list of micro-nutrients including minerals. To this we can add compounds such as glucosamine sulphate, MSM and chondroitin sulphate. These compounds help to repair damaged cartilage.

The real trick is to combine these compounds at the right doses for the right time periods. For example I have found that the glucosamine type products are less effective for smaller joints. The best natural approaches to OA involve an anti-infl ammatory diet and a structured supplement programme that needs to be closely monitored. My preference is to have monthly monitoring for the fi rst 6 months to maximise the benefi ts. Give me a call if you need advice.

Before we learned we could increase growth by applying organic manures and ultimately, manufactured fertiliser, plants had to make do largely with whatever they could scavenge with their roots from the soil, supplemented by deposits of excreta from grazing animals or, even less evenly, the decay of dead animals themselves. Plants can also take up nutrients in gaseous form — like N as ammonia gas — through their stomata, which are tiny holes in the leaves.

Some plants have developed smart ways of improving the availability of nutrients that are in the soil, such as excreting acid hydrogen ions from their roots, which replace calcium and other cations on clays, allowing them to be ‘swapped’ for the hydrogen. Others excrete chemicals that make existing soil acidity, particularly soluble aluminium, less toxic.

This is not to say however that plants cannot take up nutrients through their leaves. They are opportunists, like most living organisms. The main difference in the design of leaves and roots is that the former have a layer of protective wax covering them, which is produced by the outer or cuticle layer of soils. This cuticle wax provides protection against excessive sunlight, dust and so on.

Cuticle wax is repellant to water, more or less depending on the plant type. Therefore products designed for foliar uptake often contain what is called an ‘adjutant’, chemicals designed to

Trace element application methods

improve passage of the product through the cuticle.

Foliar uptake is most efficient in the morning or later afternoon, as the wax tends to be more water repellant during the hotter part of the day (to reduce water loss from inside the plant). Generally, what nutrient gets taken up through the leaves does so within four hours of application. Most of the remainder falls or gets washed off the leaves through to the soil, although if what remains dried on the leaves gets rewetted by dew overnight, more can be absorbed the next morning.

There are limits to how much nutrient can be taken up through the leaves.

Excessive loadings on the leaves with soluble nutrients at any one time can cause ‘leaf burn’. However, plants can easily take up their requirements of most trace elements through the leaves, and a considerable proportion of fertiliser N growth-boost requirements. The advantage of applying trace elements in liquid form to enable foliar uptake

is that this avoids the very high soil fixation losses that occur with many soil-applied trace elements, and requirements can be met with only one application per year. In many cases, foliar-applied trace elements

are 10-20 times more efficient than are soil-applied.

With fertiliser N, foliar application as a solution or fluid (a high-solids liquid) is typically twice as efficient as is granular urea, provided a urease inhibitor such as NBPT is included if urea is the foliar-N source, or the nitrification inhibitor DCD if ammonium sulphate is being used.

Another advantage of foliar application of N is that additives such as trace elements, gibberellic acid and weedicides can easily be incorporated. In addition, major nutrient requirements (P.K.S) can be incorporated in a range of particle sizes, with the deliberate aim of ensuring that the majority falls through the leaf onto the soil, avoiding ‘leaf burn’.

Dr Bert Quin, fertiliser and soil fertility consultant

Plants have evolved nutrient uptake systems that most suit their particular environment.

Some plants have developed smart ways of improving the availability of

nutrients that are in the soil, such as excreting acid hydrogen ions from their roots, which replace calcium and other cations on clays, allowing them to be

A clean water supply and adequate sanitation system are the most important factors in ensuring good health in a rural drinking water supply.

The source of the water supply whether it’s bore, stream or rain is the starting point in ascertaining the levels of risk and management required to make the drinking water safe.

Treatment for water falls into three categories.

Filtration is the removal of suspended solids in the water. Filters can be in the form of screens or cartridges and be operated either manually or automatically. Some filtration cartridges filter as fine as 0.5 micron, which can be used to help the removal of protozoan cysts like Giardia and Cryptosporidium, but cannot remove viruses. Iron and manganese removal and pH correction (although not strictly filters) fall into this category.

Purification is the removal/reduction of taste and odour. Carbon filters in the form of cartridges or backwashable media filters are used in this application.

Disinfection is the process of killing bugs. It is the single most important treatment step in the production of safe potable water. Treatment can be done chemically (usually with chlorine) or with ultra violet light. Using UV is a safe, non chemical way of disinfection and is by far the most popular option. In order for disinfection to work correctly the water must be clean.

Regular maintenance and servicing of water treatment systems ensure reliable trouble free operation. Waikato Filtration Services are the experts in recommending, testing, supplying, installation and servicing water filtration and purification systems specific to their customer’s needs.

“Quad bike accidents happen all too quickly and most are preventable. Sadly the outcomes are long lasting. Because quad bikes are easy to ride and versatile, people often under estimate the risks involved. Quad bikes are powerful vehicles with gross weight of hundreds of kilos, including any trailers. That’s a lot of load to fall or roll. A common reaction after an injury or accident has occurred, is “how did this happen?” says Andrew Primrose, FarmSafe’s Regional Manager.

Common causes of ATV accidents are

Moving safety issuesby Andrew Primrose

There are estimated to be over 70,000 Quad bikes used extensively on farms, horticultural and viticulture businesses throughout New Zealand. In the rural sector, Quad bike and tractor accidents are the most common causes of work-related fatalities, apart from road accidents.

Arrive Alive Don't Drink and Drive

Under the Health and Safety in Employment Act, employers are legally required to ensure that employees using quad bikes are well trained. What is well trained and how would you know? It’s more than being shown where the helmets are.

Effective training takes into account the changing environmental conditions and hazards on your property. This is the ability to work around ‘what ifs’ without compromising safety — yours and others. Hazards identifi ed, eliminated, minimised or isolated are deaths or injuries prevented. It’s a simple fact, that ‘what if’ thinking saves lives.

Riding safer

Despite recent coroners’ reports, in favour of the compulsory fi tting of rollover protection, it is not yet mandatory. FarmSafe encourages quad bike owners to inform employees/contractors on areas of a property that may pose a high roll over risk and identify any areas that are not safe for quad bikes. If necessary create no go zones.

It is wise to conduct regular quad bike and motorbike servicing and maintenance. Daily checks before use are also desirable. Approved helmets should be worn at all times by everyone on the property when riding a quad bike or motorbike, and covered in footwear is also a must. Eye protection or goggles should be considered in appropriate situations, ie when it’s dusty or there are bugs.

FarmSafe can provide practical training to eligible candidates through a range of training options and qualifi cations. Covering quad bikes, tractors, 2 wheel motorbikes, chainsaws, chemical handling, safety awareness and more.

Training for changeFarmSafe research indicates that age and experience are

no protection from serious injury and even death in the rural setting. In fact, the risk of injury increases with age and experience, rather than decreases.

Mitsubishi’s highly recognisable triple-diamond insignia may be centred on a newly styled grille, and the hard planes and corners of last year’s ‘jet fighter’ design may have been planed away to reveal a smooth, contoured shape — but don’t be fooled into thinking that the new Outlander is in any way a compromise.

Just over a decade since Mitsubishi Motors coined the term ‘crossover’, the latest iteration of their go-anywhere, seven seater family friendly vehicle has been tuned for comfort, low environmental impact and clever convenience. It is part of a sweeping plan for 2013 which will see the Mitsubishi brand become more global and ‘green’, and if this offering is anything to go by, it will be a step in a very positive direction indeed.

The new Outlander is styled in a way which is elegant rather than outrageous — the kind of vehicle which offers smart, reliable family practicality rather than huge air scoops and spoilers. That being said, the interior is filled with clever niches and third-row seats able to accommodate actual adults, yet also fold flat. A colour reversing camera,

adaptive cruise control and full iPod and Bluetooth connectivity round out a suite of electronic safety and comfort features which also boasts a simple to operate yet powerful stereo.

Mitsubishi call it ‘the more civilised

Value for money makes this diamond sparkleby Andy Bryenton

SUV’, and part of this promise has been an extensive safety program, resulting in a vehicle which should not only attain but exceed ANCAP 5-star standards. There is a real sense that this is an ‘engineer’s car’, focused on safety and reliability rather than concept-vehicle flourishes.

But any thoughts of staid performance are banished with a press of the start button. The 2.2 litre VR diesel which I drove felt responsive and willing, with minimal turbo lag off the line and a very refined sound indeed — a far cry from the big diesel mills of early SUVs. Despite having impressive pick-up and cruising manners, the Outlander also boasts CO2 emissions of just 151gm/km and an astounding fuel economy figure — a consolidated 5.8 litres per 100 kilometres.

Mitsubishi have brought us shocking, aggressively styled and powerful machines in the past — just take a look at the EVO lineup for confirmation! But when engineering a vehicle for the modern family, they have turned away from noise and fire and instead crafted an economical, sensible and able four wheel drive which also gains an edge in the most important way of all — value for money. Mitsubishi’s diamond advantage warranty simply adds more shine to an accomplished performance from this automotive giant.

bruising happens because of external force then why do they look so similar? If they were caused by standing on stones then I would expect a much more even pattern over the whole claw. Sometimes I clean the wall of the claw with my grinder just to see what symptoms can be found there. In the second picture you can see some haemorrhage in the wall of the claw. How does it get there? If you look at this evidence, it is hard to argue that those bruises are caused by the physical causes that so many people believe.

I appreciate that disproving one theory doesn’t prove another. So, I can’t say that this evidence is conclusive, that it is diet that causes the problems for those cows, but I can say that there has to be a problem with the corium (live tissue) on the inside of the claw. Especially if you see sole ulcers in claws, as shown in the photo, when the cow in question is a beef cow! This animal doesn’t even know what a stone looks like. It doesn’t get pushed over tracks, doesn’t have to

Hoof PrintWith Fred Hoekstra

As we now are in the holiday season it may be a good time to think about food. Food for cows, I mean! There is still a lot of discussion on whether or not diet has an effect on hoof health. If we think about the many different ways our human bodies can react to various foods and the outward symptoms we observe, then it is not illogical to also think that our cows can present with physical symptoms that are indicative of dietary imbalances or intolerances.

I am a strong advocate for the inclusion of a greater amount of straw in our cow’s diet. One of the main arguments I encounter with this suggestion is that straw would substitute grass and therefore minimise energy intake and subsequently reduce milk production. I am not a nutritionist, but I would like to explain what has influenced my thinking

based upon my regular observations of the cows’ feet I deal with. With this evidence you can make up your own mind whether or not diet has an impact on hoof health.

We trim around 15,000 cows in a year. This is a combination of preventative and curative trimming. Out of those 15,000 cows there may be a handful of cows that show no haemorrhage at

all; so, therefore, most cows in New Zealand have haemorrhaging or bruising in their hooves. Admittedly, in some of those cows you have to look carefully for the haemorrhage but, nevertheless it is there. The interesting thing is that most cows have the same pattern of haemorrhage where the

main bruise is in the spot where the sole ulcer is shown on the cow in picture 1. The sole ulcer in the picture is just an advanced stage of a normal bruise. If the

stand on yards and isn’t under stress. So, if it is not physical force that caused this problem, and the young lush grass had nothing to do with it, then what caused this sole ulcer?

One other thing I want to mention is water. Cows would do much better if they had plenty of access to water. Often when they leave the paddock for milking they don’t have any water available until they get back into the paddock. That is way too long, especially on hot days. I wonder how it would go if there were single drinking pots in every stand on the platform in the cow shed. It would be a good way to get cows onto the platform and may even work better than meal. I would be very interested in receiving your feedback on this topic.

The couple, who have been sharemilking for eight years, started building their first herd well before they began their first 50 per cent sharemilking position.

But before they ventured into a career in the dairy industry, the pair worked in completely different areas. Jason was a builder by trade and Lisa worked as a hairdresser.

Lisa said their decision to go farming enabled them to take control of their future and become self-employed.

“We turned to farming as we could see a clear path of progression and with hard work we could see it would be a successful future for us.”

The couple’s first year farming saw Jason working as an assistant manager in a 500-cow position near Morrinsville while Lisa continued hairdressing.

From there they went contract milking 600 cows at Springdale, spending three

Winning the 2011 New Zealand Sharemilker Equity Farmer of the year competition has been a career highlight for Waikato’s Jason and Lisa Suisted.

years in that position and saving hard.

Jason began working towards an agri-business diploma while Lisa attended courses to up-skill with the financial side of the business.

“We tried to learn as much as we could from our boss and started networking to find a suitable bank and accountant,” said Lisa.

“The saving was the key to us reaching our 50/50 goal.”

While contract milking, Jason and Lisa purchased 30 good quality mixed-age cows and leased them out.

“Instead of payment for the lease on these animals we were given young stock so when we were ready to put our first herd together we had 40 mixed age animals.”

The couple’s first 50 per cent share-milking position was near Morrinsville, milking 260 cows on 85ha. Jason and Lisa worked this farm together and after three seasons moved to their current position near Gordonton. They are now heading into their fifth season — 50 per cent sharemilking with 450 crossbred cows on a total milking area of 134ha.

“Our farm owners live in Auckland and are happy for us to continue in this position,” said Lisa.

The couple and their three young children particularly enjoy the Waikato area as it is close to their friends and family.

“We have considered other larger jobs outside the area but we value our family above all else so we have never made that move.”

Jason and Lisa took on their current position just after a major drought badly affected areas of the North Island, including Waikato. The drought left the farm’s pasture damaged and infested with chickweed so the couple re-grassed 43 per cent of the farm during their first three seasons on the property.

Jason said peat soils are not without challenges and pasture persistence is one of them.

“At around four seasons old the pasture starts to look sparse and open.”

As part of their pasture renewal programme, the couple has grown 5ha of turnips and 6ha of maize annually. And the results of their efforts are starting to pay off with the farm’s pasture showing improvement over the past four seasons, reducing the amount of area cropped.

“With our soil type, cultivation is needed to help aerate the peat and work lime in to promote good pasture establishment and growth”

Since taking on their current sharemilking position,

Jason and Lisa Suisted are currently 50 per cent sharemilking near Gordonton

Jason and Lisa have increased production figures from 130,749kgMS to 151,000kgMS with around the same number of cows. This year they are aiming for 160,000kgMS with 470 cows. The herd is milked in a 40-aside herringbone shed.

This season, the couple hired a manager to allow Jason more time to finish his studies and to permit future growth opportunities.

They recommend up-and-coming farmers enter the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards to give themselves a competitive edge when applying for positions.

“This is a very dynamic industry and we love hearing the unlikely success stories that have come from it,” said Lisa.

“We find other dairy farmers down-to-earth, non-pretentious and always willing to share their ideas and business models with us.

“There is a lot of support in this industry and when challenged you can notice a real sense of community looking out for each.”

In the short term, the couple’s goal is to obtain a larger 50 per cent sharemilking position with between 800–1,000 cows. They would also like to purchase an 80ha property.

Highland gathering packed with fun

Paeroa streets will be echoing with the roar of V8s and motorbikes this February as the annual ‘Battle of the Streets’ draws in huge crowds keen on classic horsepower in all its forms. But the day before the iconic street race there’s even more chrome and flames on the menu, with the 10th annual V8 and

Motorbike Show and Swap Meet bringing the classic era to life.

On Saturday February 16 enthusiasts and fans of all things chromed, tweaked and customised will gather from 8am at the Paeroa racecourse. First on the agenda is the big swap meet — a perfect chance not only to check out some automotive masterpieces, but also to secure the parts you

need to get your own project concourse ready. At 10am a parade of bikes and cars will roll through town to the delight of onlookers, and as the day continues entertainer Tom Sharplin will lead his band in a set of nostalgic 60s and 70s rock ‘n’ roll hits.

It’s a fun day out for the whole family, and it’s also a valuable fund raising opportunity for the Paeroa Rotary Club, who have been the power behind the V8 and motorbike show for a decade now. Expect a carnival atmosphere with lots of hot food, cold drinks, stalls to browse and of course a selection of some of the best rolling steel ever to turn a wheel on Kiwi roads! You’ll also be able to watch the skilled drivers of the Thames Valley Car Club hitting the track in a series of display races.

With all this and more on Saturday the 16th, and the ever popular Battle of the Streets motorcycle classic on Sunday, this promises to be a great weekend for Paeroa — and an unmissable

double event for anyone who loves classic automobilia.

The Paeroa Highland Games and Tattoo will celebrate its 20th anniversary on February 9 at the Paeroa Domain

by Denise Gunn

Since its early beginnings as a small pipe bands contest, the event has developed to include several traditional highland competitions along with an evening Tattoo.

“Paeroa is the only town that holds an evening tattoo,” said organising committee member Anne Harris.

Set amongst the backdrop of the Paeroa Castle, the event will commence at 9am with the New Zealand and Australian National Anthems, followed by the unofficial Scottish anthem ‘Flower of Scotland’.

Two international competitors, Australians Craig Read and Aaron Monk, are returning to compete in the heavyweight field events. The current New Zealand champion, Patrick Hellier, will also return to defend his title.

Junior field games will be held for the first time this year to encourage young people to participate.

Highland pipe bands from Auckland and the central North Island will compete in sets, medleys and a street march during the afternoon, followed by massed band displays during the evening Tattoo.

Competitions will continue throughout the day, Celtic singers will entertain, and the opportunity to

visit the clans’ area, check out genealogy and sample Scottish food will also be available.

A fun Tartan in the Park fashion competition will be held at 5.30pm with entries taken on the day.

“We would really like to see some cool entries with people being creative with tartans,” said Anne.

The Tattoo and event will close around 9pm with a lone piper and rendition of ‘Old Lang Syne’.

An all-day ticket, which includes the evening tattoo, costs $20 for adults and $3 for children. An evening only ticket costs $15. Earlybird tickets, available until January 31 from the Paeroa Information Centre or emailing [email protected], cost $15 for day and night.

The call of the bagpipes will be heard through the streets of Paeroa when thousands of people visit the town to attend the 20th Paeroa Highland Games and Tattoo on February 9.

Vicky’s husband Ken, a draughtsman and vintage machinery enthusiast, built their first pioneer cottage around five years ago.

“We copied friends in Australia who had something similar but theirs is dismountable while ours is a shed built to fit our trailer,” said Vicky.

Vicky and Ken are both members

of the Wellington Vintage Machinery Club. Vicky is also a member of the Wainuiomata Historical Society.

“We share a love of things vintage, so building the ‘Victorian Kitchen’ was a way of combining my interest with his when we attend vintage engine shows.”

Before building the cottage, Ken and Vicky would attend vintage machinery

A pioneer way of lifeby Denise Gunn

An interest in New Zealand’s early settlers’ history has led Wellington woman Vicky Alexander on a nostalgic journey, cooking in a mobile pioneer cottage.

events around the North Island, sleeping in their car or tent.

Now the new pioneer cottage serves a number of functions including transporting Ken’s vintage engine and providing a sleeping area.

Vicky said the cottage, which is built from macrocarpa slabs with a corrugated iron roof, represents building materials that were available in the pioneer era.

“Corrugated iron was made in

New Zealand and the macrocarpa was milled here.”

The cottage travels on a tandem trailer, houses a wood stove and the interior is decorated in a pioneer style. Copies of newspapers from the Victorian era line the walls, Blue Willow china sits on shelves, and tins covered with copies of original labels set the scene.

Vicky has also sourced a butter churn, an old preserver, potty, flour bags filled with Dacron, Mrs Potts irons, old bottles and kitchen utensils. Kerosene lamps provide decoration by day and are used at night.

“If I can pack it, I’ll take it,” said Vicky.

At events Vicky dresses in keeping with the pioneer era, pegs out a long clothesline with a selection of clothing, and then makes scones which are sold to event visitors.

Ken recently built a Mark II cottage for a new trailer. The new cottage is clad with tongue and groove look-a-like, has a rolled iron roof and leadlight windows.

The couple attend up to six events a year and meet hundreds of people.

“It’s a lot of fun and I’ve met a lot of older people who have given me advice for getting the best from my wood stove,” said Vicky.

Vicky has decorated the mobile pioneer cottage interior by lining the walls with copies of newspapers from the Victorian era,

placing Blue Willow china on shelves, and covering tins with copies of old, original labels

Separating the wood from the trees

Peter Clark writes...

This forest stream has harvested plantation forest just metres from its banks

In one recent example, work undertaken by NIWA to develop a Rivers Environments Classification (REC) has been applied by PF Olsen to help manage rivers and streams in the forests it manages.

The REC is a spatial dataset that classifies all river segments according to a variety of factors that influence their primary physical state.

With over 2,685 km of streams to look after in all the forests PF Olsen manages and 1,058 km within our Forest Stewardship Council Certified estate, Kit Richards, PF Olsen’s Environment Manager could see an

immediate potential for application of this dataset.

“One of our challenges is that we constantly acquire, at short notice, new forests to manage on behalf of clients” says Kit. “We may know nothing much about the streams within the area yet our harvest planners may have to prepare initial estimates and concepts for

planning and budgeting. By linking our Riparian Management Rules to the stream classes, through our Forest Information and Planning System (FIPS), we can immediately understand some of the likely constraints. We can then generate the rules that contractors will have to follow for the stream categories in an area they are working in and present these on harvest plan maps and prescriptions.”

As well as providing a framework for PF Olsen’s riparian rules, the system also enables analysis of the variations between the types of river systems we have to manage in different regions. In more recent times the Department of Conservation has developed a spatial model that relates data from the national freshwater fisheries database to the REC system to create the Fresh Water Environments NZ (FWENZ) system. This can provide predictions of probability of occurrence of native fish including threatened species within stream sections. This information too is very helpful to PF Olsen managers when planning operations.

This is sample of a chart from the Rivers Environments’ Classification database

Staying connected with science developments often provides opportunities to innovate in ways not first envisaged by those who initiated the science.
