The applied focus of this degree, and the interactive classes will help you build strong one-on-one learning relationships with your tutors.

This two-year course teaches you the applied skills of landscape design and construction in a purpose-built studio right in the heart of Hamilton Gardens.

HANDS ON TEACHING

The Diploma programme has a strong practical emphasis and is largely taught using real-life projects with real clients, such as a local school, kindergarten, park, community lifestyle blocks, residential sections, private courtyards or Marae. You’ll learn how to construct paving, fences, retaining walls and outdoor fireplaces and decking. Wintec tutors will often use current projects for their teaching.

ON THE JOB EVERY DAY

In addition, practical work projects form a core element of the teaching approach in both design and construction, so you will receive practical training on an almost daily basis. OVERVIEW

In Wintec’s Centre for Health and Social Practice learning facilities you will develop the knowledge and skills you need to become an in demand Registered Nurse in a variety of health care settings. At the completion of the programme, you sit a Nursing Council of New Zealand registration exam and exit with an internationally recognised degree.

WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD

Nursing is a hands-on career and that’s the way we teach it at Wintec. Our real world simulated learning area is set up as an actual ward where you practice on computerised patient simulation models that assume real life health issues. Your tutors are all experienced registered nurses with specific clinical skills, and you’ll also find many of your tutors are involved in research and clinical practise. This means that what you learn is as current as you can get!

PRACTISE WHAT YOU LEARN

You have the opportunity to integrate theory and procedure through clinical practice within a hospital and health care facility. You will do a minimum of 1100 hours across four of the following areas - chronicity disability, elderly care, acute, family and infant - learning on real patients under the supervision of a registered nurse at our partnership organisations: Waikato DHB, private hospitals, elderly care centres or Mäori Health Providers.

You will also need to provide two references, a Curriculum Vitae, a completed Health Declaration form and a personal statement. A PRIMARY HEALTH CARE NURSE works in a variety of roles encompassing population health, health promotion, disease prevention, wellness care, first-point-of-contact care and disease management for individuals, whänau, communities and populations. Positions include public health nurses, practice nurses, Plunket nurses, school nurses, rural nurses, sexual health nurses, mental health etc.

If developing specialist skills in a particular area of nursing interests you, then consider a career as a HOSPITAL NURSE. In this role you could specialise in mental health, child health, aged care, oncology (cancer), intensive care, operating theatre, community health or workplace health and safety.

As an ENROLLED NURSE you will deliver nursing care and health education in a variety of health care settings, including rehabilitation, acute care, aged care and mental health. You will work under the direction and delegation of a registered nurse.

A NURSE PRACTITIONER diagnoses, evaluates, treats and manages acute and chronic illness and disease. Your day could include talking to patients about their health, ordering, performing and interpreting laboratory tests and x-rays, prescribing medication and performing minor surgery.

BACHELOR OF MIDWIFERY (LEVEL 7)

Duration: Starts January for three years

OVERVIEW

Wintec works closely with the District Health Board in Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Lakes (DHB), Tairawhiti and Hawkes Bay in developing this unique programme leading to registration as a qualified Midwife. As you learn, you’re given the opportunity to apply your knowledge through hospital placements and with a midwife in independent practice. On completion of the programme, you sit the National Midwifery Examination to become a Registered Midwife.

A PRACTICAL APPROACH

At Wintec we take a hands-on approach to learning. Using the latest hospital standard realistic models and props you’ll carry out simulations of birthing procedures, take recordings, assess babies and learn how to manage obstetrics procedures. You’ll also engage in scenario work to practise dealing with the different situations a midwife can encounter. Wintec’s experienced, industry qualified tutors are often joined in workshops by guest speakers such as midwifery educators from the Waikato District Health Board.

LEARNING ON THE JOB

On this programme you have the opportunity to follow women through their pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatal care. In your first year you spend 16 weeks in clinical placements at birth centres, hospitals and various community agencies working under the supervision of a registered midwife. In your second year, your time in clinical placements is 30 weeks. In your third year you will spend just four weeks in class and the rest of the year on the job training working alongside registered midwives.

You will also need to provide two references, a Curriculum Vitae, a completed Health Declaration form and a personal statement.

PAETAHI TUMU KÖRERO BACHELOR

OF COUNSELLING (LEVEL 7)

Duration: Starts February for three years


OVERVIEW

This programme is suitable for those who wish to develop a career as a professionally qualified Counsellor. Paetahi Tumu Körero Bachelor of Counselling is a three year, 360 credit bachelor level qualification. There are 15 compulsory modules and two electives.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

Graduates will be able to enter the counselling workforce at a beginning practitioner level. Practicum placement is a significant element in the programme. In Year 1 students will engage with a community agency in an observation capacity. In both year 2 and 3 they will undertake 200 hours of supervised practicums which includes 100 hours of counselling and / or group work each year. In the final year of the degree students will select a practice focus and will choose electives relevant to that practice focus. There are three practice focus areas available: Mental Health and Addictions counselling; Mäori-centred counselling; and, Family/Whänau counselling.

AFTER GRADUATION Graduates of this programme will be able to apply for professional membership in a relevant professional body: NZAC, Te Whäriki Tautoko, DAPAANZ or NZ Christian Counsellors Association. Graduates will have developed a range of flexible skills and professional attributes that will position them well to be responsive to, and to work collaboratively within, the increasingly complex and interdisciplinary social service and health communities.

BACHELOR OF SOCIAL WORK (LEVEL 7)

OVERVIEW

There is a shortage of social workers throughout New Zealand and a social work degree from Wintec will set you on a rewarding career path in this industry. The programme provides in-depth knowledge and skills relating to social work practices in contemporary Aotearoa. It has a collaborative focus, encouraging people to work in teams and recognise strengths in others. This four year programme will give you the knowledge, skills, and attributes required for social work practice in a variety of settings including schools, hospitals, community groups or government services. You will also learn how to reflect on your own perceptions, actions and processes along with the ability to justify and defend your professional practice.

LEARN BY DOING

Around sixty percent of your learning will be by practical application supported by a relevant theory base. On campus small groups and role-playing case studies enable you to get the feel of real social work situations. Clients will participate in creating actual scenarios which are videotaped then revised and critiqued by students and tutors. Placements with a variety of agencies are part of the curriculum in your second and third year of the programme. These placements teach you the skills you will need to work within these organisations.

Feedback through placements and liaising with industry organisations allows the programme to keep pace with the ever-changing industry needs and standards. These strong industry relationships also lead to potential employment for graduate students.

The aim of this programme is to provide you with greater capacity to work in management, leadership or senior practitioner roles either in your current field or within specialised fields of practice which include: working with children and youth, the elderly, people with disabilities, refugees and migrants and in the area of mental health. You can become skilled in a new field, or further advance your current specialisation.

RELEVANT LEARNING

This programme will extend the existing qualifications pathways and will allow higher level professional development that is inter-disciplinary. It is relevant to practitioners from a wide range of practice contexts and the resulting inter-disciplinary interaction of health and social services practitioners will enhance and strengthen service delivery in the region. This programme is available to international students who may be overseas qualified health or social services practitioners but may not be New Zealand registered. This programme will not lead to New Zealand Health or Social Service Professional Registration.

You will work on real research projects using real clients with the opportunity to work alongside respected industry professionals. Work placement on this programme totals 70 hours - 40 at a local gymnasium and the remainder in the area or specialisation of your choice such as nutrition, community development and regional sports trusts.

BACHELOR OF TEACHING

(EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION)

Duration: Starts February (or July for the mid year intake)

Council of NZ requires 7.0 in all bands), or equivalent

OVERVIEW

This Degree focuses not only on the theoretical knowledge of early childhood education, but also hands on practical experience. You’ll spend one day and one evening per week in classes, and a minimum of 12 hours per week in a licensed and chartered early childhood education setting putting the skills you’ve learnt into practice.

GRADUATE WITH THE SKILLS YOU NEED

You’ll have the support of highly qualified lecturers motivated to help you succeed at every stage of the degree programme. Field-based learning is centred around praxis - that is taking what is learnt in the classroom and putting it into practice - theory into practice and practice into theory. As the programme is field-based and because of the praxis element, graduates are work-ready and sought after by industry. Elements of the programme are taught on Wintec’s online teaching and learning system, Moodle.

RELEVANT PARTNERSHIPS

The programme content and how it is taught is directly influenced by the standards set by NZQA and the New Zealand Teachers Council. Wintec also works closely with the early childhood education industry to ensure the qualification remains constantly relevant.

GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN TEACHING ENGLISH TO

SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (LEVEL 7)

Duration: Starts February or July for one year


OVERVIEW

This programme is designed to provide you with the specialist knowledge and practical skills required to teach English to speakers of other languages.

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE

Wintec’s experienced TESOL lecturers will teach you the skills you need for working with English Language Learners (ELLs). You will also experience first-hand what it is like to learn a new language, with language specialists brought in to teach you another language. You will also observe English Language teachers and their students in primary, secondary and tertiary environments.

APPLYING YOUR SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

You will learn new teaching skills in an authentic classroom environment with real English language learners and reflect on your teaching experience in order to modify your practice.

KNOWLEDGE

You will learn or review key points of English grammar with particular reference to typical difficulties for English language learners. You will also acquire knowledge about socio-cultural, individual and language acquisition factors which impact on English language learning.


Graduate Diploma of Information Technology in Education 7 Jan/Aug 1 Year 6.0, with no band lower than 5.5; or equivalent

Graduate Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages 7 Feb/July 1 Year 6.0, with no band lower than 5.5; or equivalent

Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) 7 Feb/July 3 years 7.0, across all bands; or equivalent

GRADUATE DIPLOMA OF INFORMATION

TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION (LEVEL 7)

Duration: Starts January or August for two years


OVERVIEW

This programme is designed to give you the capability to integrate information communication technology (ICT) in your classroom as part of an enhanced teaching and learning environment. You should have registered teaching qualifications and be working as an educator in some capacity, so you can apply what you are learning while you study.

LEARN BY DOING

You’ll be learning through a range of practical courses, which incorporate theory and are taught using flexible delivery options. As a working educator you’ll be able to immediately apply what you’ve learnt in your everyday classroom.

The Accident Compensation Corporation provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents, and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but you may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. Further information can be viewed on the ACC website at www.acc.co.nz

MEDICAL AND TRAVEL INSURANCE

International students (including group students) must have appropriate and current medical and travel insurance while in New Zealand.

IMMIGRATION

ELIGIBILITY FOR HEALTH SERVICES

Most international students are not entitled to publicly funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health, and can be viewed on their website at www.moh.govt.nz.

IELTS

All referrals to IELTS refer to the Academic Requirements only. In all cases, IELTS assessments must be no less than 2 years old at the time of application.

ADDITIONAL COSTS

It is important that you pay for the full costs of all services requested along with your tuition fees payment. A receipt will only be issued once full payment has been received by Wintec. At the time of printing your total living expenses required per year for Visa purposes is $15,000 NZD. Some programmes have additional expenses such as books, stationary, uniforms, catering equipment and assignment materials. Prices vary so please enquire on application to a programme. Text books are usually between $75 - $110 each.

REFUND POLICY

By accepting a place in a programme or paying fees at Wintec, a student enters a contract with Wintec for the period of the programme. This means there is an obligation to pay the fee for one year or the length of the programme if less than one year. The refund policy is available on the website: www.wintec.ac.nz/international under ‘Information for Students ’. In the event of insufficient numbers of enrolments the programme may be cancelled and a refund will be given.
