Waikerie Lutheran Primary School is a supportive Christ-centred community, equipping each student for life.
Message from the Principal
Hard work, commitment and struggle are all part of the learning journey
What an awesome show the kids put on for concert last
Thursday! As I mentioned to the students, practising a
performance to perfect it takes many efforts and a lot of
commitment. The staff are very proud of how all students
made a great effort towards perfecting their individual roles in
each performance for concert night.
As staff, we work hard to get students to apply the
commitment they showed during concert practise to their everyday work. If
you can watch the video link below, the teacher talks about the struggle of
learning. She encourages students to critique one another’s thinking and
highlights that problems can be solved in different ways. She normalises
struggle in her classroom so students don’t feel bad if they don’t
understand.
On Thursday night we witnessed students who enjoyed the end result of their
hard work. In class, we are also championing students to be committed and
disciplined so they will also enjoy the results of their hard work in other areas
of the curriculum.
In this clip, the teacher is attacking the Maths curriculum. She asks her
students how they feel and they respond “good” because “we’re working
hard.” In a concert reflection in the 4/5 classroom, the same type of
comment was passed: “I felt great on the night because our hard work paid
off”. In this classroom, you can see and hear the kids making the learning
connection!!

School News Continued….
Thank You
On Tuesday, We had very few students out of 120 that were not in full formal uniform for
photo day. That meant that four classes proudly had their photo taken in perfect
uniform! This also the meant the office staff had one less job to do that morning. It also
allowed teachers to fill in minimal paperwork for the class photographs, allowing them
to enjoy the opportunity to praise their students for their organisation and commitment
to wearing their uniform with pride.
Thank you to parents, who support the students and the school in this part of school life. We
appreciate your support.
Master Plan Conclusion
On the 16th September at 6pm, you are invited to listen to Peter Moeck and myself as
we summarise the Master Planning process that school council and Peter have
undertaken during the past 9 months. The process is a visionary exercise that has
been undertaken to foresee what facilities are potentially needed within the next 30
Years. The school wisely has based this 30 Year master plan on catering for the needs of the current
student population of 120 students, with view to extra classrooms being added to the Master plan
as needed. Please RSVP to the office by 14th of September (Monday, week 9).
Congratulations Vampire van Niekerk!
At the end of concert, there was the Monster Mash Jib Jab show, of which Mrs van Niekerk’s face
foiled a few kids who thought they knew all of the staff by sight!!
Mrs van Niekerk recently applied for a grant to attend the Australian School Business
Manager’s conference in Perth. She has been successful in this application and so our
school has been awarded $2500 towards expenses for her to attend this conference. Well
done Hannelie, we know you will take advantage of this great learning opportunity.
NAPLAN results
Today, NAPLAN results will be delivered to parents by students. These envelopes have
been addressed to parents and students have been reminded about being
respectful in delivering this envelope unopened.
Staff, parents and students, through contributions to our learning support review, are developing a
mantra of all students and families working to ‘shift our actual performance closer to our God given
potential’. This has been supported by a school improvement in spelling and numeracy results. The
only real way that staff and parents can interpret these results (and the way that we have always
advocated) is to read them in relation to your individual child.
In the school holidays, Mr Borgas is meeting with our AISSA consultant, Mary Pickett and their
NAPLAN consultant Desiree Gilbert. This will enable him to learn from our NAPLAN results in relation
to other like schools and in reading the longitudinal trends for our school in this data for the decade
that NAPLAN has been operating.

Corner of Peace I recently came across this modern parable:
“A rich artist decided to create something special for the city he loved. For many years he quietly
worked on various masterpieces. He then built a wondrous gallery and filled it with his art. Finally,
he opened his gallery free to the public and sat back to watch their reaction. Soon word spread
and people came in droves. They toured the collection and exclaimed the wonder of the
artworks within. However, the artist was quite disappointed! You see, none of the public wondered
about the artist or gave him any credit. For some strange reason they thought the wondrous
gallery had come into existence by itself and the artworks had just randomly appeared.”
Very appropriate, I thought, for this time of year. For me it is my very favourite time of year with
delights to all my senses in abundance. We are surrounded by the wonders of nature coming alive
in beauty and in amazing ways, as it does reliably each year in spring. However, how often do we
actually give thought, or credit, to the even more amazing Creator of this entire incredible
splendor?
Psalm 111 exhorts us in verses 2, 3 and 10: 2How amazing are the deeds of the Lord! All who delight
in him should ponder them. 3Everything he does reveals his glory and majesty. His righteousness
never fails. 10Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom.
Fear here is respect and awe (reverence) not terror or horror.
Psalms 19:1 also states: The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His
handiwork.
As we have just recently (and indeed rightly) thanked and remembered our earthly
fathers this Father’s Day, we could also give a thought of gratitude to our Heavenly Father for all He
has given us as well.
God bless
