President Rhodora Pagay called the meeting to order at 12:15. She reminded us that she will be president for a few more weeks (months!). She introduced the head table: President Elect Nominee Steve Koyama, Kristina Lockwood (our speaker), and herself! President Rhodora said she had a great time at Rotary On The Road last week thanks to the invitation from Gene Ward and Bob McDermott. PP Chad Adams inspired us. He started by telling us that President Rhodora gave him several minutes to get ready! He then told us about a 60+ year-old friend who with whom he was going to enjoy some golf. He called his friend and found out that he had passed away. Then he told us about all the likes he got on his Facebook posting of Diamond Head and reminded us that people are happy in Waikiki and we are lucky to live Hawaii. PP Mo Radke led us in the Pledge to our American flag. PP Bob Tellander facilitated the introduction of our guests. One of our members told him that he liked his haircut. PP Bob said he cut it himself. Jim from Minnesota said he visits us every spring and he has had perfect attendance for 39 years. PDG Dave Benson joined us again! Debbie Olson is interested in joining Rotary. District Governor Nominee Nalani Flynn was our guest. Summer Escajeda who is a Rotarian at Honolulu Sunset. She is a ship agent for Japanese. She also told us about her Club’s fundraiser on May 7th that costs $100. Alan Richmond from Langley told us he is going home tomorrow and cannot wait to come back in July. Our song today was lead by PDG Phil Sammer. Our special guests were a lawyer, police chief, general manager of a television studio, manager of Canal House, credit union employee, shop teacher and a ship agent. Elect Joe Gedeon gave a special welcome and facilitated the picture taking. He reminded everyone to like our Facebook page. Announcements: 1. Steven Morgan announced that we have a book

give-a-way coming up and sign up sheets were on the table. We also will be painting Next Step on April 16th. An email will be coming about this event. A potential Eagle Scout will be bringing friends to

help us! The time will be from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

2. PP Chad Adams shared that we have a number of members waiting for induction. Prior to inductions, new members must get information on our club. These sessions are held before the Club meeting on the first Wednesdays of each month. The next one will be April 5th. As part of our Food Fest, we will be hosting a golf tournament for our Sister Clubs on September 30. The Food Fest will be held on October 1. Club members are asked to join in the golf tournament this year!

3. Bill Amigon shared a Foundation Moment and asked members to become Paul Harris Fellows. He told us about the article about a Rotarian visiting Mother Theresa. She was scrubbing toilets and he helped her for 20 minutes. He said this with the most inspiring thing he had ever done!

PP Sally Blanchard will be giving 100 of her points to all new members who donate 100 dollars.

4. The Change of Command dinner will be held on June 22 at the Elks Club.

5. We have a District Assembly scheduled for April 23. Let PE Joe Gedeon know if you are planning on attending.

Faye Zasada was our vocational speaker. She has lived in Honolulu for eight years. PP Dave Livingston invited her to join Rotary. She has had a connection with Rotary in the past but has never been a member herself. In the past she has worked with software vendors. She is now working with merchant services. She shared that for five referrals our Club can get $500 and 20% in monthly processing residuals. President Elect Nominee Steve Koyama introduced our guest speaker: Kristina Lockwood. Kristina has been the president and manager of KHON2 for the past three years. She is from Hawaii and went to San Diego for five years working Cox Communications. She learned so much about leadership in that position and was excited when she had the opportunity to return to Hawaii. She had been watching KHON2 from a distance and knew that there were problems. She was hired to make KHON2 number one! She loves the station and she loves the persons she works with. KHON’s tagline is Work for Hawaii and serve the community. They try to uncover issues and help find solutions.

SUCCESFUL WOMEN MENTOR YOUTH THROUGH ROTARY

When Clara Montanez was a student, she never heard the word mentoring. The idea of having a role model help you pursue your ambitions was unfamiliar to her.

"You basically chose your career based on personal interest and hoped you could find a job," says Montanez, senior director of investment for Oppenheimer & Co., Inc. "I went the route of getting married and having children first, and started my career later in life. I had no model for how to do that."

That changed for Montanez the day a friend invited her to join Rotary.

"Frankly, I was dragged into Rotary. I didn't see a connection at first," says Montanez, who's been a member of the Rotary Club of Washington, D.C., since 2003. "But then I met several women, including Doris Margolis, who took me under her wing and started mentoring me on how to get more involved. I began seeing the value in having someone I could count on as a mentor, and I have become more of a leader in our club, in my community, and at work."

Rotary's mentoring opportunities motivated Montanez, Rotary's alternate representative to the Organization of American States, to help organize an event for International Women's Day, 8 March. The event, to be held at the World Bank Group headquarters in Washington, will feature Deepa Willingham and Marion Bunch, both previously honored as Rotary Women of Action. Rotary International Director Jennifer Jones will moderate the event, which will be streamed on World Bank Live.

Montanez says Rotary has given her a platform to mentor young women as they balance career and family, as well as manage the challenge of repaying student loans. According to a recent study by the American Association of University Women, the student loan debt burden weighs more heavily on women because of the persistent gap in pay between women and men
