PDG Phil Sammer did the honors and inducted Kathryn Henski into the RC of Waikiki with the classification of Entrepreneur-Business Owner, seen here with here Sponsor Adrienne King, her children Jacob Henski and Robin Henski and her Campaign Manager Mela Kealoha Lindsey. Welcome aboard Kathryn!
The meeting was brought to order by President Rhodora Pagay.
Giving the Inspiration was Jeremy Wilson, who remarked that after doing some make-up meetings at another club he understands even more fully the good work of Rotary and our strong bonds of Fellowship keep this club strong. The Pledge to the Flag was led by Paul McGillicuddy, a true patriot himself! Introductions were deftly handled by Thomas Hall, even more so now that we have wireless microphones. Our songleader was PP Gene Gelfo, and the crowd serenaded our lone visitor, Past-President Mr. Hideo Yamada from the RC of Osaka-Shirokita, who acted as the conductor ably keeping our singers on track.
Bringing a new member into our club is always an uplifting experience, and today we had the joy of welcoming our newest member, Kathryn Henski. PDG Phil Sammer officiated, and he recognized Adrienne King, the sponsor. Kathryn’s vocational classification is inventor, which may just be a first in our club. Kathryn was joined by her family and her friend and campaign manager since she is running for office in the Waikiki district. Kathryn was obliged with her moment at the microphone, and talked about what a shot of adrenaline it is to go to a Rotary meeting, and also quickly encouraged the crowd to help the Waikiki Community Center’s Food Pantry, as they are in need of provisions.
Our guest Mr. Yamada made an announcement to the club in Japanese, and brought along his son to help translate. He is warmly inviting us to join the Rotary Club of Osaka-Shirokita 40th Anniversary Ceremony in Osaka, Japan. It will be held on April 8th, 2017. It will be a Grand Celebration, with a theme of the Spirit of Wa, meaning peace. There will be an unveiling of a restored historical treasure, the Katana Ogo, a sword, which will subsequently be displayed at the Osaka Castle. It will be at the peak of the cherry blossom season, and is sure to be a beautiful and fun time for all. As further enticement, Mr. Yamada offered to treat all from our club who attend to a private dinner at a Japanese steak house. As many of us can attest from previous trips to Osaka, this will be a once in a lifetime event that should not be missed!
The Aloha Bucket was circulated by PEN Steve Koyama. Giving up a few bucks was Laura Haas, Flora Lu, PP Dave Hamil, Ron Sauder, PP Sally Blanchard, PDG Phil, PP Bob Tellander, Gen. McGillicuddy, PP Tony Gedeon, PP Dick Matti, PP Chad Adams, Ikko Tomita, Faye Zasada,
Kathryn Henski, Steve Koyama, Mr. Yamada and Pres. Rhodora.
Next Pres. Rhodora called a Club Assembly. Community Service Chair Stephen Morgan was up first, and he reported on the most recent events and a slew of additional community service events upcoming. How this man gets rest is a wonder! Rotary Foundation Chair Bill Amigone gave an update that the club has exceeded $10,000 in annual giving thus far this year, thanked everyone who has donated, and discussed the important humanitarian work that is done through these funds. Membership Chair PP Chad Adams also thanked everyone for a great year so far bringing in new members, and mentioned there are a couple more in the cue. He also plugged the upcoming Golf Tournament on September 29th, held in collaboration with the International FoodFest. Treasurer PP Dave Hamil gave the club a quick rundown on the current financial picture, and mentioned that we are in a strong position with plenty of funds to close the year and do the good work of Rotary. Youth Service Chair PP Chuck Braden spoke of the close to being realized efforts to form a new Interact Club, this one will be with the Boys and Girls Club as La Pietra Girls School is still in a holding pattern. International Service Chair Adrienne King talked about the two international projects the club helped fund this year; a Dialysis Machine project in Thailand and a Water project in Kosovo. She also mentioned she and her husband will be attendiong the International Conference in South KJorea, and will be looking for further opportunities to partner with other clubs around the world, and in particular Asia, for new service projects. Vocational Chair Peter Ehrhorn wrapped things up by asking our newest member to do a vocational talk, and that another Rotary on the Road is being planned soon.
The Investment Portfolio was next, but alas, Victoria Paris could only pull the dreaded red marble. Pres. Rhodora got the crowd to recite the 4-way test, and then she brought the gavel down on the Rotary Bell to close another fantastic meeting of the Rotary Club of Waikiki.
Respectfully submitted,
PP Dave Hamil: Today’s Co-Scribe

Council on legislation met in Chicago April 10
Representatives from Rotary clubs worldwide will gather in Chicago 10-15 April to consider changes to the policies that guide Rotary International and its member clubs.
The Council on Legislation meets every three years and is an essential part of Rotary's governance. The representatives -- one from each Rotary district -- review and vote on proposals that seek to change Rotary's constitutional documents and on resolutions that express an opinion or make a recommendation to the Rotary International Board of Directors.
Get live updates and daily vote totals on My Rotary beginning 11 April.
Many of this year's proposed changes are designed to increase membership by giving clubs greater flexibility in the timing and the nature of their meetings. Other proposals would amend membership requirements.
Over the decades, Council representatives have debated virtually every nuance of Rotary policy and membership and attendance rules. The five-day meeting is one of Rotary's primary agents for change, allowing the organization to evaluate and enhance its relevance in a rapidly changing world.
