26 9 August 2019 The Principal’s word Year 11 Deep Thinking During the first week of the recent school holidays Jaden Meynell and KJ Cummings were selected to participate in the Year 11 Science Extension and Enrichment Deep Thought Expedition. This is a 5 day residential programme run by the NZ Marine Centre and Otago University at Portobello. Jaden and KJ participated in planning an investigation, gathering data, and reporting their results, within a group setting, comparing particle size and the number of living organisms within it. Recently we were informed that both students had been awarded an Alumni of the University of Otago Inc. Scholarship to cover their tuition costs. Waimate High School wishes to acknowledge the support this gives us and our students in extending their learning opportunities and academic enrichment. We also congratulate both students on their success and the successful performance while on this programme. Both students report that they had a marvellous time and “learned heaps”, recommending that more students go if given the opportunity.

Student Council’s Year 7 What we have been up to this term by Year 7 student councillors, Rua, Lucy, Maddie & Shannon The Year 7s have been working hard on their gymnastics in PE this term. There is vault, beam, rings, bars, parallel bars and floor. In Social Studies the Year 7s have been working on discovering who are our heroes and what it means to show courage. In Maths 7W are working on decimals and fractions while 7H are working on prime numbers with Mrs Donaldson and Fractions with Mr Familton.

Quote of the week: He aroha whakatō, he aroha puta mai. If kindness is sown then kindness you shall receive.

Year 7 students discussing Prime factorization with University of Canterbury Math facilitator, Sarah Cobb

In Science, both classes are working on light and eyeballs. 7W are in Food Tech terms 3-4 and 7H is in Wood Tech for terms 3-4. In Art 7W have been learning and making tukutuku panels. In music 7H have been learning how to play Lean on Me on the keyboard using two hands. They are also creating music magazines. In Te Reo Maori, 7H is working on the Maori names for the weather. In LA our focus is on building collaborative class teams and strong class culture. In Health, we are working on keeping & making new friends. Keeping friends is good because they will be useful in life.

Y8 Learning At present, Year 8 is keeping busy with an extremely packed curriculum. In English we are improving our persuasive writing skills as we design and write advertisements for haunted houses. It has been terrifying to read about the ghosts and ghouls that have come from our students’ imagination. From spirits in the attic to spooks in the garden, they’re going to have to work exceptionally hard to sell their homes. In Maths we are working on statistical projects, collecting data on each other which we will compare using graphs and charts. There has been all manner of measuring going on as the children find out about their arm span, height and even foot length. I wonder if the longest feet have the smelliest socks? Our new topic in Social Studies is all about consumerism. We are learning about how trading laws work here in NZ and will ultimately have the opportunity to try and set up our own business plans. Maori lessons will see the students translating their timetables from English - Monday to Ingarihi – Rāhina.

This will be a great opportunity to recap pre-existing knowledge of days of the week and numbers.

Agriculture The TeenAg and Level 1 Agriculture class had a trip to the Temuka Livestock Sale on Monday. They were shown around by the Yard Manager and learnt how to count stock. After watching cattle being sold through the auction ring, the students then headed outside to hear from a PGG agent about how he became an agent and what is involved with the role.

Year 11 Ag Class and Teen Ag trip to the Temuka Saleyards We started off the day by getting in the vans and heading off to Temuka, stopping in Timaru at Couplands to get some lunch. Once we arrived at the saleyards, we headed off to find Toni who was showing us around. We started off by getting to know her and what she does. We found out that she knew Ms Miles through horses and that she is also an Equine Chiropractor as well as working as a Yard Manager at the sale yards. One thing that many of us noticed was, that if you have good connections with people anywhere, you’ll find opportunities and jobs much easier. Once we got to know Toni, we moved on to having a go at counting the sheep. We had a competition to see who could get the correct tallies. Emily Hargreaves, Rhys Charles and Kate Melville tied initially with correct numbers but after elimination rounds Rhys came out on top and was presented a Merino top sponsored by Warren White Shearing. We learned that you count sheep in multiples of two, so for every two sheep that go past a particular point, you

only count one and at the end you double the number. We were told that some of the farmers who have been doing it for a while can count in multiples of four or seven at a time! After a time at the sheep yards we moved on to the cattle sale. We watched the cattle being auctioned off through the inside sale ring and saw the prices vary due to the weight of the cattle beast. The better the condition of the animal, the more money it tended to make. We met with Matt (a PGG agent) who told us, that by getting in and doing things around the farm or in the shops whether it’s voluntary or paid, it will help you work closer and closer to the job that you want. Sadly, the day came to an end and we headed back to Waimate again.

By Kate Melville Year 7 and 8 Aoraki Maths Competition On Tuesday, August 6th sixteen Year 7 and 8 students headed off to Timaru Boys’ High School for the annual Aoraki Maths Competition. With a team of four from each class, the students worked together to solve problems. It was an intense thirty minutes as the cogs in their brains whirred at full speed to come up with the solutions. The runners for each team worked their socks off as they ran back and forth with questions and answers – sometimes not quite the right answers! All in all, it was a very enjoyable occasion and we are extremely proud of all the students’ effort and teamwork. A huge thank you also to the parents who helped out with driving students up to the event. We couldn’t have done it without you! Well done to Rua, Harvey, AJ and Shannon from 7W, Dan, Cade, Lucy and Scarlett from 7H, Ben Allan, Karys, Lachlan and William from 8W and Jacob Harrison, Maiah, Georgia and Max from 8H.

English Department Term 3 is very busy for seniors in the English Department, with practice exams and the bulk of the internal assessments due by the end of the term. Students have been practising essays on everything from depression in Shakespeare’s Hamlet to the issue of gun violence in America as is highlighted in the film The Hate U Give.

Year 10 have been creating visual texts which have either developed a message about public safety or highlighted a key theme in the text. They are now embarking on novel studies while Year 9s have been ‘showing’ not ‘telling’ in their creative writing unit in order to create vivid imagery in their stories. Year 8 students have been taking part in Literature Circles. This involves groups of students reading together and then completing a range of activities. They discuss the language, characters and events that take place and have the opportunity to compare between their life and the life of the main character. Taking part in Literature Circles allows students to develop their reading, writing and vocabulary. Year 7 have recently completed a novel study on 'Wonder' by RJ Palacio. The novel has a strong anti-

bullying, pro-acceptance theme throughout. This has led to some great discussions in class around the importance of accepting everyone for who they are and embracing everyone's uniqueness.
