Continued from page 1Neil started at the Wai-

nuiomata school in July 2003 after wanting the challenge of a bigger school.

“I had been a principal at Mt Cook School in Welling-ton for 10 years, it was a small inner city school,” he says.

Before Mt Cook, Neil had taught at many schools across New Zealand and had also taught in Queensland for a year.

Over his time at Wainuio-mata Primary, Neil says he has enjoyed working with the school community – students who are keen to learn, a hard working and creative staff, parents who support the school and their children’s learning, and a supportive and focused board

of trustees.“The last 11 years have been

a good challenge.”Neil has enjoyed coming to

work every day and learning new ways to support student learning.

He says the way Wainuio-mata schools work together as a cluster has been a highlight of his time at the school, especially the work undertaken by Wainuiomata principals regarding school leadership.

Looking to the future, as well as his music, Neil is interested in doing some principal appraisal work, and will be working with a number of principals in the next year.

If Neil has any advice for future principals it is to listen

and talk to others before making important decisions.

“Work hard on being the best communicator you can be, and always ask the question, will what we are planning to do sup-port students’ learn-ing?”

He says he is going to miss the contact with the children and their families; also the fun and the challenges he has had while be-ing at the school.

“There is something very special about teaching young children; their enthusiasm to take on lots of new learning and the way they grow and develop over the time we have them in our schools,” says Neil.

The Wainuiomata Shop-ping Centre’s Shop and Win promotion is proving more popular than ever before.

The promotion is encour-aging shoppers to buy local, and do their Christmas shop-ping in Wainuiomata.

The idea came from The Warehouse manager Kirstin Jones-Elms who approached centre manager David Tom-kins about the promotion.

“The Centre loves to put on these kinds of promotions, and when Kirstin came to me to give a shop and win promo together we were happy to run with it,” says David.

Wainuiomata’s The Ware-house has given out over 240 entry forms to custom-ers, and Wainuiomata Cake Kitchen and A1 Sushi have

both given out about 80.Every retailer in the centre

donated prizes, which David says is great.

“We were blown away by the generosity of the retailers, and to have a prize pack of $2000 is great for someone in our community to win,” says David.

“I think that the initial $600 barbeque pack from The Warehouse set a bench-mark and the retailers here in the centre more than rose to the occasion.”

Kirstin says that she is excited the entire shopping centre has gotten behind the promotion.

“We have given everyone another reason to shop lo-cal,” she says.

The promotion is running until December 21 and the prize will be drawn the following day.

Wainuiomata children are having the opportunity to get out and have fun on Wednesday afternoons.

Hutt City Council has been running the Spark program for children under the age of 16 so they can keep active.

Terry Stallworth has been running the program and says it is a runoff from the Connex program that is also taking place around the region.

“Spark is funded by the Council and is intended to fi ll the needs of children that are too young for Connex.”

The program involves the children play-ing games and sports that are intended to get them working together and learning essential skills.

“We want to keep the kids active af-ter school and keep them happier and

healthier,” he says.Terry has been working with kids for

many years and says that every child should try to play at least one sport.

“A kid in sport is a kid out of court, as I always say,” he says.

“It is a chance to make new friends and to be in a good positive envirioment.”

The program is held in Wainuiomata, Naenae and Taita.

Wainuiomata is by far the biggest with about 35-50 children turning up every week.

“The children come from all over Wai-nuiomata, all different schools,” says Terry.

The Wainuiomata program began this term after the other two began at the start of the year.

“I wanted one in Wainuiomata as there wasn’t one here and I felt we needed it,” says Terry.

After hearing her own children gave part of their lunches to children who didn’t have any, Renee Ailao had a brainwave.

“My son came home after school and said a child had no lunch so he had given him his apple,” she says.

“It happened again and I was shocked.”

This gave Renee the idea of setting up NZ Kids Food, which supplies lunches to primary and intermediate children in Wainuiomata and the Wellington Region.

“I set a business plan up to deliver children lunches,” says Renee.

The service is online where parents can set up an account and order their child’s lunch from there.

The lunches are $5.20 each – if approved from Work and Income New Zealand they can be as cheap as $3.70.

The company is based at the old

RSA site on Burden Ave, and Renee says they have done a lot of work to make the space suitable.

“We put down new carpet and vinyl, the vinyl was donated to us,” she says.

After receiving the orders for the lunches they are delivered to the schools as long as the school has signed up with NZ Kids Food.

“We drop it off to the school, we go as far as Porirua, Wellington and Upper Hutt,” Renee says.

NZ Kids Food has also opened up a shop at the Burden Ave site where people can go down and buy lunches.

“We are planning to open stores in Porirua and Wellington as well,” she says.

Renee was born and bred in Wainui-omata, and although living in New-town now, has based NZ Kids food in the valley.

“I chose to be based in Wainuiomata because I thought there was a need over here for this,” says Renee.

The gift of lunchA 32-year-old male from Lower Hutt

was found dead next to his white Toyota Corolla on Paekakariki Hill Road on Friday. He has been named as Matthew Stevens, and police are continuing to investigate his death.

Santa is making his way to Wai-nuiomata for the Christmas parade this Saturday.

The parade sets off at 10am from Burden Ave and makes its way down the Main Road to the Wainuiomata Shopping Centre – it will take about an hour and organisers are encouraging people to stay off the roads during this time.

Santa will be making an appearance in the Shopping Centre afterwards.

The Wainuiomata commu-nity had the chance to celebrate everyone in the community on Saturday.

The Wainuiomata Pasifika Education Success Initiative (WaiPESI) held a celebration which showcased all that Wai-nuiomata had to offer.

“We had Wainuiomata Inter-mediate’s kapa haka group here, and that was followed by there pasifi ka group,” says organizer Yvonne Daymond.

“We are wanting to show off everyone’s talent in the com-munity, we are a community.”

Yvonne says that the day has had a really good response from the public, and their was a good amount of people all day.

There were plenty of shows all day as well as food stalls and services that are available in the community.

“We wanted to showcase Wainuiomata, there are lots of

families that are willing to put on a show, and that’s great,” Yvonne says.

“This day is a great opportu-nity to give back to the com-munity – it is our end of year celebration.”

WaiPESI was put together to encourage and reward education in the pacifi c culture.

The group of volunteers works with children from year zero right up to year 13.

Yvonne says that the group all love what they do but they would not be able to do this without help from their sponsors.

“We are lucky that Wainuio-mata businesses are willing to give to us, we couldn’t keep going and organise days like this without them,” she says.

All the volunteers have full time jobs as well, Yvonne says that sometimes the work is hard but they wouldn’t keep doing it if they didn’t love it.

“It’s really fun, it’s a lot of work but I really enjoy it.”

Wainuiomata Grey Power members are against amal-gamation into a super city saying that Hutt City works well by itself.

Jane Chamberlain says we only have one super city to gauge our thoughts on, Auck-land, and doesn’t feel that that situation suits our region.

“Do we want the budget blow out that we see in Auck-land, when Hutt City has and continues to work within its budget,” she questions.

She also says that there is hardly anything good re-

The Homedale Village markets are taking place this week on Saturday from 8am until midday.

The stalls are held by Wainuiomata locals, and money spent goes straight into the valley.

These are the last markets for the year, and there are many stalls placed all around the village area.

There will also be a bouncy castle, face painting and a sausage sizzle available.

For children who want to tell Santa their list for Christmas this year person-ally, he will be appearing in the Mall from Monday next week.

He will be available for photos from 10am and is going to be in the mall every day except Sundays right up until Christmas Eve.

Times for photos and cost informa-tion are available at the Shopping Centre.

ported on in Auckland.“I for one have yet to see

any real feel good stories.”“It is all very well to talk

about pooling resources, but we are already doing that through sharing and talking about doing even more,” Jane says.

In a poll released by the Hutt City Council 80 per cent in the region prefer the status quo.

Four hundred people were polled and according to pro amalgamation people, the poll was out to kill the super city debate.

Lower Hutt Mayor Ray

Wallace says the results show that people do not want the amalgamation.

People do not want this extreme change, if there was a referendum on this now it would fail,” he says.

In every council region that was polled all except one had over 70 per cent to keep the status quo.

The other one was Kapiti which had just over 60 per cent.

There has been some de-bate about the poll with some arguing that it did not ask enough people in each region.

Wainuiomata trenching company has been convicted and ned $28,500 for the illegal discharge of sediment slurry.

All Excavation and Reinstatement Services Limited (AERLS) dumped sediment into a Porirua gully, where slurry entered and smothered the bed of a tributary of the Kenepuru Stream.

Regional Council’s Environmental Regulation Manager, Alistair Cross says AERLS was cooperative with the council investigation and ceased discharges immediately on issue of an abatement notice.

Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health! Tobacco smoking is a major cause of death and disability in New Zealand. Even passive smoking – inhaling second-hand smoke – is the cause of death for many people.

“Quitting smoking is not easy though because Nicotine is very addictive”, acknowledges Clive. “But if you have the motivation to quit, and you are determined to do it, you can.”

Never think it is too late to give up. Even if you have smoked for years, it is worth quitting. Even if you have tried many times before, give it another go. It can take many attempts to become completely smoke free, and this time you could be successful.

And never think you have to do it alone. There are many individuals and organisations that can assist and encourage you. “We can help,” offers Clive, “by providing advice, and medicines to help. There are many forms of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), including patches, lozenges and gum. Using these can double the likelihood that a quit attempt will be successful, and with our support, or the support from Quitline (phone 0800 778 778), this likelihood is increased. There are now also medicines from your doctor which can help you quit as well. ”

There is nothing cool about what smoking does to your body. It can irritate the eyes, nose, throat and lower respiratory tract. Diseases of the lungs, especially asthma, are made worse by smoking, and smokers are at high risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which causes permanent lung damage. Smoking increases the risk of developing cancers of the lung, throat and mouth, and blood clots that can lead to heart disease or stroke, and poor circulation that can lead to limb amputation.

The advantages of staying smoke free are so many that once you have quit, you will never want to return to your old habits. But don’t forget to use all the resources that are available to you, including your local pharmacist!

Wainuiomata High School students who are traveling to Japan next year started their fundraising this week.

The group held a car wash at the NZCU Baywide site in Wainuiomata on Saturday and there was a steady fl ow of both vehicles and water.

Jasmine Tipene from NZCU Baywide says that the day was successful.

“We started at 10am and we have had a good amount of people through,” she says.

Along with the car wash, there was a sausage sizzle available as well as a bake sale.

“The students have to raise $3000 each if they want to go, but they have to have $2000 each by April to confi rm their plane tickets,” Jasmine says.

The group is going in Sep-

tember next year for two weeks, in the holidays be-tween terms three and four.

The high school has sent students over before, with this year’s group going over at the same time of year as next years group.

Plans haven’t been made for any more fundraisers this year with Jasmine saying that they are planning to hold another car wash next year.

Fungal infections of the foot are relatively common – known as Athletes Foot. Fungi grow on skin in warm moist environments such as shoes and socks. It is more common in summer and humid weather.

It is caused by a microscopic fungus that lives on the tissue of hair, nails and outer skin layers. It causes symptoms that can be

-peeling, cracking and dry skin on the feet-redness, small blisters, itching of the skin-breakdown in the integrity of the skin

Athlete’s foot can occur inter digitally between the toes or the plantar sole of the foot –especially the arch area. Sometimes it can be mistaken for patchy dry skin or eczema.

Athlete’s foot needs to be treated with anti-fungal creams. They need to be applied regularly –at least daily. Feet can also be soaked in a warm salt foot bath. Dry feet afterwards with a paper towel that can be discarded to prevent cross infection via shared family towels.

Putting shoes in the hot water cupboard overnight helps to dry them out and also placing them in the sun –especially sports shoes.

Wearing a sandal in a communal showering area and around pools can help prevent you picking up an infection in a public facility.

Fungal infections of toe nails can cause them to be thickened, discoloured, smelly, crumbly and unsightly. Bits of nail may crack and fall off. The fungal infection in the nail can become a source of infection to the skin causing on going skin infections.

Fungal nails need a sample taken to be tested in a laboratory to identify the fungal infection before oral anti-fungal medication can be prescribed by your GP. This is because there are different types of fungi that can infect nails including dermatophytes, moulds and some yeasts.

LETTERS to the editorCongrats to the fi re service Too much Christmas Dear Ed, I would like to

congratulate the fi re service on their 70th anniversary of their brigade.

What an amazing service they give to this valley and they make the area a far safer place.

I did not realise that the fi re service was so old and was based down in Homedale either so it was good to read some history about our great service.

I hope that I never have to call

on these guys for an emergency but it is good to know that if I do they are an experienced and skilled bunch of people.

Also congratulations to all the guys that received their honours medals, especially the few that have been there for such a long time.

And that cake looked so deli-cious.

Regards, A. Wilson

Dear Ed, I am writing to say that yes Christmas is an impor-tant time of year but advertising Christmas so much not just in this paper but everywhere is just too much.

Many people have lost what Christmas is actually about and it is now an excuse for spending loads of money and cheap sales.

Having a Christmas parade every year is great but has it become a place for people to ad-

vertise their businesses and jobs. Why do we have to see Christ-

mas tree’s put up in October, why do we have to have Christmas songs played nonstop from the middle of November?

Surely there is a better place for everyone’s money and time than on so much Christmas events, people may call me a Christmas Grinch but I believe that this has gone too far.

S Benjamins, Wainuiomata

The Hutt City Council Traffi c Bylaw 2007 will come into effect on Tuesday 2 December after it was passed at a recent Council meeting.

This affects people in many dif-ferent ways, including those who want to sell their cars on the side of the road.

Residents will no longer be able to park their vehicles in one spot for more than 24 hours to advertise it for sale.

It is reasonable for residents to advertise their vehicle for sale only if it is being used for day-to-day travel.

This allows people the time-honoured tradition of selling their own car but stops them using

public roads to advertise their cars for long periods.

Also authorities will now be able to move parked cars when road works are taking place.

As per current practice drivers will be given 24-hours’ notice of resealing work through a fl yer on their car.

Before the change to the bylaw, contractors had to work around any cars that remained parked on the street and backtrack to complete the small piece of reseal-ing under their car once it had moved on.

Changes to the bylaw now allow Council to use a tow truck to safely move cars in the way to a location as close to possible to where it was.

Ticketing on time restricted cars will resume on December 2.

New changes to traffi c laws

Hutt City Council and Te Omanga Hospice have teamed up to bring the fi rst Recycled Christmas Tree exhibition to Hutt City.

The ReTree exhibition celebrates recycling and creativity in our city and aims to bring some peace, enjoyment and fun into the busy pre-Christmas period.

Entries are now open for Hutt City’s ReTree Festival, Recy-cled Christmas Tree Exhibi-tion.

The selected trees will be ex-hibited in the CBD – a public launch of the exhibition took place on 30 November.

There are two categories

available to enter in, each with their own criteria.

Recycled entries must be made of 100 percent recycled materials, and must be able to be collapsed for storage.

Natural/Crafters is all about the en-vironment and doing things yourself.

All entries must be made of natural materials and any man made materi-als must be made by the entrant.

Ideas include roaming the seaside or bush to see what nature has to show, and copying that at home.

Those interested in entering need to contact the council or look online at huttcity.govt.nz and look for the ReTree link.

Recycled Christmas tree exhibition hits Hutt Valley

The trees are set to be put up, the fl ags are up, and Hutt city’s Christmas season is about to kick off.

Along with the return of Christ-mas in the Hutt, there are many activities all round the region celebrating the festive time of year.

Wainuiomata, along with Petone, Normandale and Stokes Valley are all set to have their

Christmas parades in the coming weeks, Wainuiomata is having theirs this Saturday.

Mayor Ray Wallace says that Christmas in Hutt City is a fantas-tic time with events and activities happening in many of our com-munities.

Twelve Days of Kiwi music is running every Tuesday to Friday up to Christmas on Andrews Ave.

This is where local musicians perform live during the day, all free of charge.

There is also the Twelve of Kiwi Christmas story trial which runs right up to Christams Eve.

People are encouraged to fi nd the 12 pieces of art that celebrate the book Twelve Days of Kiwi Christmas book.

“We are an inclusive com-munity, and so we know it’s important to keep many of our activities free or low cost to give people the opportunity to join in and enjoy the festive season in the Hutt,” says Ray.

The Friends of Baring Head have arranged with a four wheel drive club to hold a beach-combing experience for the public at Baring Head on Saturday, 6 December and would like to invite you to participate.

You will be taken over the hill and along the

Fitzroy Bay coast to near the climbing rocks. There will be a short illustrated talk about

the sorts of animals and plants that can be found on the beach, and you will be given a booklet to help you identify what you have found.

We will then lead a walk along the coast, or you can just relax and picnic until the walkers get back. There will be an optional short trip

by 4WD to the lighthouse. Mountain bikers are also welcome.

We’ll provide tea, coffee and water, but you’ll need to bring your own lunch.

There will be a small charge for those using the 4WD transport ($10 per adult, kids free) to cover the costs of the day.

Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.

Spaces will be limited so bookings will be essential.

Private vehicles are normally banned from Baring Head so this will be a very rare opportunity for visit a beautiful part of the valley without raising a sweat.

“I’m afraid of not placing where I should be because there are a lot of fast guys there,” he says.

One of those fast riders include the world famous Guy Martin, who regularly races at the Isle of Mann TT race.

He also starred in the docu-mentary movie that showcased

what the riders go through at the events.

The fi rst round is at Hampton Downs raceway, about halfway between Auckland and Hamilton.

The second round is on the following weekend at Manfi eld raceway in Fielding.

The fi nal round of the series is at the famous Cemetery Circuit at Wanganui on Boxing Day.

Along with Guy Martin there are 11 other international riders taking part in the series, which is what is making Shane so worried about his placing.

His gearbox however will be the main concern.

Despite completing her exams, Wainuiomata High School Student Navada Blake still found the time to umpire hockey.

Navada was part of the umpiring team in the recent New Zealand and Australia series that was held in Wellington.

“I was the third umpire as well as the judge,” says Navada.

“Being a judge involves eve-rything apart from the whistle, controlling the subs and making sure there are enough people on the fi eld.”

The opportunity arose when someone from Wellington Hockey approached her to see if she would want to do it.

“They have been getting me into lots of reps and New Zealand Maori games, I have had to turn down a lot because of school though,”

Navada has been umpiring since she was 12, when she had to um-

pire some young childrens games.“I started umpiring the kids every

Saturday morning, and eventually moved up to umpiring premier and reserve grades,” she says.

Navada has also umpired masters grades which is for players over the age of 35.

She enjoys umpiring and says that is has helped her with her own game a lot.

“It has helped me understand the game more, and getting good feedback has helped me with my playing.”

She has been playing Hockey since she was six.

“It is a family sport, the whole family plays it, like some families play rugby, we play hockey,” Na-vada says.

Navada was the captain of the high school fi rst XI hockey team, and says that she is going to miss playing for the school.

“I am going to miss all the girls, I have enjoyed it a lot being the captain for the school,” she says.

Children of Wainuiomata are having fun after school now thanks to the people at Kokiri Marae Health and Social Ser-vices.

Renee Davies has helped or-ganize basketball afternoons for the children every Friday after school.

“We wanted to provide some sort of activity for the children,”

she says.“We contacted Terry Stall-

worth, because he is the basket-ball guy around here.”

The afternoon runs along with Kokiri providing activities at the community centre on Thursday afternoons.

“Kokiri has our youth week every year, and the kids were always saying that they wished it could happen all the time so we decided we should,” says Renee.

“We are hoping to get some-thing organized for every day after school.”

The basketball is run from 3pm up until 5pm every Friday.

“We want as many children as possible, we have had Jitterbugs turn up as well which is good,” Renee says.

The children are also supplied with sausages after playing bas-ketball, which are all free.

Renee travels around schools

teaching students traditional Maori games.

She believes that teaching stu-dents sports will teach them basic motor skills and hopefully have them enjoying being outside.

“I remember when we were growing up, we were playing outside until the street lights came on, kids aren’t like that these days,” she says.

“Children would rather play video games.”

The men lost to the Horowhenua Kapiti representative side in the semifi nals 28-21 after leading 21-nil early on.

The women fi nished third in the round robin tournament just missing out on the fi nal that was played by the Wellington representative side and Havelock North.

Ten mens teams entered the tournament along with four womens teams.

These included many travelling teams includ-ing the Manawatu Fijians, Horowhenua Kapiti and the Havelock North womens team.

The both the mens and womens tournaments were won by the Wellington rep teams, the women beating Havelock North 41-nil and the men beating Horowhenua Kapiti 30-15.

The Wainuiomata teams had a mixed day with results throughout the day.

The women won against Old Boys University 26-7 but lost their other games against Wel-lington 28-nil and Havelock North twice 26-5 then 26-17 in the semi.

Sevens tournament success

The Wainuiomata Bowling Club had another round of inter-club bowling over the weekend.

This was met with some up and down results over the round, although most teams did end up with two out of two wins.

The Premier Reserve team in section two started off the day great defeating Petone 19-4.

Their morning form did not continue however losing to Tawa Blue in the next game 21-nil.

The section three Premier Reserve Squad also started the day off with a victory, beating Wilton 15-7.

Their second game never hap-pened however as Upper Hutt defaulted handing Wainuiomata the victory.

The Division Two side started off the day poorly losing to Island Bay 23-nil they then turned that round and defeated Miramar.

The Division Four side went through the day unbeaten with

a victory against Tawa 15-8 followed by a victory over Plimmerton.

The Womens teams had a gen-erally good day over the round.

The Premier Reserve team defeated Valley United 24 nil in their fi rst game.

They unfortunately could not follow this up with the same form in their next game going down in a closely fought contest to Titahi Bay 11-12.

The Division One team domi-nated their rivals from the Hutt Bowling club all day.

They started off the day de-feating Hutt Two 14-7 then continued the form by beating Hutt One 14-9.

The Wainuiomata Rugby Club is having preseason training down at the Club rooms every Tuesday and Thursday.

The club is getting ready for next year’s club rugby season after falling agonizingly short in their fi rst ever Jubilee Cup fi nal last year.

Club rugby season starts on March 21 next year and this year the Swin-dale Shield includes two extra teams, with Avalon and Parematta Plim-merton being promoted up to the top grade.

They will be joining the 12 existing teams in the Premier grade in an at-tempt by Wellington Rugby to create more depth in the region.

The trainings are happening at

6.30pm on the nights and are being used so that players can remain fi t over summer and help keep the team up at the top of the region.

There is a determination down at the club this year with players, offi cials and fans alike all focused on taking that last step to securing the clubs fi rst ever Jubilee Cup title.

“It’s not too far away, if we have the same side as we have basically the same side as last year so we can do it,” club member Willie Gemmell says.

For anyone who is interested in getting into training or joining the club please contact Justin Wilson on 0212498099, Justin Va’a on 0212640257 or go on the club web-site.

Students from Fernlea pri-mary put on a good showing at the recent Wainuiomata Inter School athletics.

Nearly 70 students from the school took part in the day, and nearly as many parents and whanau helped out on the day as well.

Students that did well in-clude, Ben Waiwai who won in the Year 6 shot put and took third in the Year 6 high jump.

The shot put was especially great for the School as they had all three top places with Tyler Ferguson and Kristiarn Patea fi nishing second and third as well.

The same happened in the Year 5 high jump with Waaka Poutu, Ilai Daymond and Kaya Lal finishing in fi rst second and third.

Students placed in 38 events, including sprints, vortex, long jump, distance running and discuss.

Waaka Poutu had two fi rst

placings with fi nishing fi rst in the Year 5 sprints to go along with the fi rst in high jump.

Brian Wooley placed in four events in the Year 4 grade, fi nishing third in long jump, going along with winning shot put, vortex and sprints.

All the primary schools competed in the day, and the day took place on the fi elds of Wainuiomata High School.

All the students had a fan-tastic time and fun was had by all.

A special event for parents and children will be held in the Hutt

Valley next month in collaboration with the national play centre

awareness week which runs from March 2 to 8.

Organised by the Hutt Play Centre Association, 18 play centres

– including two from Wainuiomata – will come together for a

free play and information day at Avalon Park.

It will also give parents an opportunity to further learn about

what play centres are about and offer in local communities, as

well as increasing the number of children attending sessions.

Wainuiomata Play Centre president Vicky Johansen says

numbers vary throughout the year and recently a few children

have left and enrolled into school.

and Anchal Singh were appointed the roles of head boy and girl, while their counterparts Tyler Heath and Ashleigh Low are this year’s deputy head students.

The Wainuiomata News sat down with the school representatives and found out what they want to achieve this year – apart from level three exams. Callum, Wainuiomata’s head boy, has

the desire to maintain a level of pride associated with wearing the school uniform. “It’s an important part of being at

A former Wainuiomata Intermediate student has secured

her spot on a New Zealand waka ama squad heading to Rio

de Janerio later this year.

Jaleighquar Rahiri will be part of a team of eight pad-

dling in the junior J19K division and will compete against

a number of countries at the World Championship Sprints

event in August.

While waka ama is the one of New Zealand’s fastest grow-

ing sports and the country’s reputation is second to none,

Jaleighquar says to be named as part of the elite squad is a

dream come true.
