President’s Message

by Norm Baird

CCWTE 2015 Board President

CCWTE Spring 2015 Newsletter Page 2

Dear Emmaus Community:

It’s truly a great honor and a privilege for me to serve as your CCWTE

President for 2015. Experiencing the Walk to Emmaus weekend as a pilgrim

was one of the most significant spiritual experiences and blessings in my

lifetime. And since that weekend, it’s been an ongoing blessing in my life to

grow together as a family with each of you, and to work alongside you, in some cases, on many Walks together.

I look forward with excitement to this coming year of exciting Emmaus moments, blessings and challenges, because I

get to share all of those alongside you, my Emmaus family. Our community is blessed with a truly quality CCWTE

Board of Directors this year, and I’m confident that there is no challenge that might come up that we can’t successfully

address should it arise (and we know they always do). We as a Board are dedicated and committed to contributing to

the continued success of this amazing, life-changing ministry that is Walk to Emmaus.

If there’s one challenge that I could offer to all of us as a community in this upcoming year, it’s that we commit

ourselves to all sponsoring at least one friend, fellow church member or family member to experience a Walk this year.

As you all know, this entire ministry is built on quality sponsorship to keep it vibrant and growing. I look at this as an

opportunity for me, and for all of us, to “pay it forward”. I can’t be content with experiencing the phenomenal blessing

of a Walk myself, without sharing that blessing with those I love. I’ve often told those that I hoped to sponsor that the

Walk to Emmaus was the greatest gift that I could possibly share with them, as Christians. My hope and prayer is that

we will become doubly committed to sponsorship during this coming year, to the point where we hardly have room for

all our pilgrims!

We have a wonderful set of Walks coming up in Easton in March. Please be in prayer for Lay Directors Jerry Berg and

Rhonda Pope, their teams that are already in place, as well as the pilgrims that God has selected for these Walks. Pray

that God builds a hedge of protection around the teams and pilgrims alike, and that He allows us once again to serve as

His hands and feet, to allow Him to bring encouragement, strength, blessing and healing to our pilgrims. We know that

God is in control as He puts these Walks together. For those of you that aren’t serving on the teams, I’d like to invite

you to bathe them in prayer, as well as write Agape notes to the pilgrims and table leaders, and to join us at the

Candlelight and Closing events.

In closing, let’s remember Colossians 3:24, where we’re reminded: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as

working for the Lord, not for men. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

In His Unfailing Grip,

Norm

Welcome New Pilgrims to the

Emmaus Community! CCWTE extends a very warm welcome to all those who just completed their Walk this past November. We pray that

you will become involved in this blessed ministry — through serving on teams, sponsoring pilgrims, praying, and

attending services associated with the Walks (Candlelight, Mananitas, and Closing). Before sponsoring your first

pilgrim, it is important that you hear a sponsorship talk. These talks are presented at the Gatherings and your sponsor

will have information on when and where the next Gathering will be held. You can find an application to serve on a

team at the CCWTE website (CCWTE.org) — it’s really easy and fast. Just be sure and get your application in as early

as possible. As a new pilgrim, you will be serving on either the agape or kitchen team if you desire a live-in position.

Serving on either the love team or candlelight team is also an option and does not require you to live on-site the entire

weekend. Again, welcome! If you have any question, you may contact any of the board members listed on page 4.

Doing Our Best for

Our Host Churches We all know that our host churches are the backbone of our

Emmaus Community. Without them, our Walks, as we know

them, would cease to exist.

It has always been the Emmaus policy to do everything

possible to leave each church we use in better condition on

Sunday than we found it on Thursday. In other words,

thoroughly clean up our mess plus do a little good will

cleaning of anything else we see needing attention.

In order to ensure this policy continues and is carried out at

all Walks, members of each team (i.e., core team, etc.), and

a representative of the church, will be asked to do a final walk-

through of the host property on Sunday.

In addition, each and every team member is asked to do their

part in helping to keep things neat and tidy throughout the

three days of the Walk, and on Sunday completely cleaning up

at the least their own sleeping area.

We’re all tired on

Sunday after working

a Walk, but if each

person would just take

a few moments and do

a little extra cleaning,

we could make each

church, and the

Emmaus reputation,

sparkle!

Many, many volunteer

hours, not to mention a

chunk of change, went

into putting our new song books together, and we want them

to last for a long time . . . Just think how important they are

to our Walks!

So please treat them gently. Carefully place them in the bins

and avoid anything which might cause the binding to crack

or the pages to tear.

Please . . . A Gentle

Touch with our Song

Books

Putting God’s Agenda

First How do you spend your time? Your money? What

preoccupies your thoughts? Jesus said we’re to seek first His

kingdom and His righteousness. So what’s first in your life?

Sometimes when I’m very weary, I give in to the

tyranny of the urgent. I allow God to have a secondary place

in my life. I sleep through prayer times. I turn down new

opportunities for service. I become lethargic about the

kingdom of God. When I do, I’m basically in survival mode.

And God gets second place.

Is your preoccupation, your weariness, a matter of

misplaced priorities? Are you trying to accomplish goals that

are not God’s? Give careful thought to all your ways.

Reorder your life so that God and His agenda are first.

YOUR PURPOSE ON A TEAM

We sometimes forget that the primary objective of Emmaus is that of a training or discipleship ministry. Our purpose, next to

serving Christ, is to better prepare Christian men and women for leadership positions in their churches, jobs, and community. Each

time you serve on an Emmaus team, you are not only gaining experience as a leader yourself, but you are setting an example —

discipling — those newer workers who are learning as they observe you in action. How is

your attitude? Are you doing your part? Are you re-presenting Christ?

Each experienced team member should consider him or herself a teacher — like Jesus. He

taught primarily by example as should each of us. He did not just command us to disciple,

He also paved the way in showing His followers how to make disciples themselves. We who

want similar fruit to what Jesus produced will follow His example. Jesus told His disciples

to follow Him, while He showed them how to follow God. Those who disciple like Jesus

will tell others to follow them, and will be very careful what they do and say. Are we

building up or tearing down?

We should be using every opportunity to take a new worker, or someone less

experienced, by the hand and gently, lovingly, and correctly train them to serve more effec-

tively — train them to be the next trainers.

3-Day Walk Overview FRIDAY: Day of Faith

The focus is on God and the grace He offers. The aim of this day is to open the minds of the pilgrims to their need for a

vital relationship with God.

SATURDAY: Day of Love

The focus is on Jesus Christ and our life as a response to grace. The aim may be viewed as moving hearts to further

commitment to live in union with Jesus Christ. What is our response to Christ?

SUNDAY: Day of Hope

The day’s focus is the Holy Spirit and the pilgrims are called to be part of the Christian community in action. The aim may

be viewed as encouraging the body of Christ to take action in the world through the power of the Holy Spirit.

CCWTE

Succession Guidelines

The following are suggested guidelines for how you should progress through the various positions on

an Emmaus team. First of all, submitting a work request EARLY is very important. But remember,

even if you are qualified for a certain position and sent in your work request early, a spot on any team

is not guaranteed. Each team position is prayerfully considered.

These guidelines are printed in each newsletter as a reminder for those who may have forgotten or

those new to the Community.

This makes you qualified to serve as a

silent table leader in the Talk Room or

as sound tech. The position of sound

tech requires special training and

those individuals are considered

members of the song team while on a

Walk. This position is also considered

equal with that of silent table leader

and thus qualifies the sound tech

to be available to serve as a speaker or

cha cha.

This makes you qualified to be a

designated table leader/speaker or a

cha cha. Table leader assignments

are made with care and are given to

those who have proven the ability to

lead a group, understand Emmaus,

listen, empathize, guide discussion,

and foster the development of the

table family.

One of the blessings of

Emmaus is that everyone

is on the same level. Yes,

you may serve as LD, but

then you go back to

working on teams —

and no team position is

any greater or less than

another.

4 This makes you qualified to serve as

a core team boss for a live-in

action team or for the love team.

It is very, very important that prior

to being selected to serve as a boss,

you have had enough experience

working in the background to

ensure that you understand the

entire scope of the job.

5 To be an assistant lay

director you should have

progressed through steps one

through three and have given

at least one talk.

6 To be qualified as a lay

director candidate, you must have

progressed through steps one

through four, given two talks, and

served as a cha cha or assistant

lay director.

1 You must serve

several times on the

live-in action teams

(kitchen or agape) to

ensure that you under-

stand the entire scope

of each job.
