Walking Bass – The 2 Feel (L#26)

Your Action Plan

1. 'The two feel' gets overlooked by many bass playersas something that's less important than the 4 in a barfeel which is commonly know a 'walking bass line'.This is a big mistake, as there's a real art in makingthe two feel sound the way it should. It needs to besupportive and simply, yet imaginative andinteractive.

The best way to hear this in action (and therefore knowing exactly what a great two feel sounds like) is by listening to great jazz bassists playing with great vocalists.

Here's a list of great vocalists you should check out. Listen to the use of the two feel at certain sections of the songs.

Ella Fitzgerald Billie Holiday Frank Sinatra Diana Krall Tony Bennett Dinah Washington Nina Simone Mel Torme

2. Once you have an idea of how the two feel bass lineis created (shown in the video tutorial) you shouldstart applying it to jazz standards. Here's a short listof standards for you to try applying the two feel. It'salso a fantastic exercise to practice going betweenthe two and four feel, in fact it's a must to be able todo this seamlessly. If you feel confident enough withyour 4 in a bar feel, add this into your practice time.
