TIMES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE AS WELL AS ACTIVITES ON THE LAST DAY.

DAILY SCHEDULESAt the beginning of the week you will be given a schedule. This schedule will indicate your walking group and what activities your pack is scheduled for the week. Please be respectful of the schedule and only attend the activity that you are scheduled to attend. We have many scouts at camp each year and this is the only way we can be sure everyone gets to experience all of the activities.

Letter to the Packs and Walking Leaders

Remember Day Camp is a time for the boys to let go! The quality of fun the boys have at Camp will depend on our program plus you as a leader or parent. Let the boys yell, get dirty and most of all HAVE FUN! This is the time for the boys to be free from most restrictions. Have fun with them... you have a chance to be one of the kids again. Plan on getting dirty with them... no one will notice!

The 2013 Lone Bear Day Camp Theme is “Jungle Adventure”. Please plan your Den Home decorations accordingly.

Sarah has some great stations and experiences planned and, like last year we want to expose everyone to new things.

Our Camp Staff is made up of people who have volunteered their time and talent (some even have taken vacation time) to be here to help make this camp the best camp experience for you and your pack. Please be respectful and feel welcome to speak with Kathy, Sarah or Matt if you would like to share questions, ideas or concerns.

Our Junior Staff members are from Boy Scout Troops and Venture Crews. Their job is to assist the adult camp staff and leaders in the program areas and help the cubs to do their best. Hopefully, through their example, the Junior Leaders will encourage the cubs to become Boy Scouts or Venture Crew members. These Junior Staff members will be present on Sunday to help set up camp and for the most part, each day from early to late. After classes, they meet for staff meetings; clean up any areas that need it; clean bathrooms; work on any program items that may be needed for the next day; and pick packs for various awards. The Adult Staff is very appreciative for the time and talents these young people have given. If you know of a youth, In Boy Scouts or Venturing, who would make a good addition to the camp staff please let us know.

We hope you all have a GREAT time at the 2013 Lone Bear “Jungle Adventure” Day Camp.

Our Mission Statement:The mission of the Lone Bear Cub Scout Day Camp is to develop moral character and good citizenship, to encourage physical and mental growth, to provide opportunitities for advancement, to learn new skills, to share old skills, to strengthen pack and dens and to have FUN!! These goals will be accomplished in a communal outdoor living experience that is, above all, safe.

Your Cub Scout Day Camp Staff.

BASIC CAMP INFORMATION

AWARDS:During camp, various awards may be given… including best theme decorated den home; clean sweep award and spirit award.

CLEAN SWEEP: The Clean Sweep Award is given by the Junior Staff. Inspections of your pack area will be at various times and presented to the best-kept den home.

SPIRIT AWARD: Cub Scout spirit is the enthusiastic attitude that inspires the spring in your step, the smile on your face, the sparkle in your eye and a note of confidence in your voice, which says “I will do my best today.”

SPIRIT BEADS: As you know we love to hear the boys sing and have a good time. Key staff will have spirit beads to present to packs that are enthusiastic on their way to and from activities.

BE PREPARED FOR RAIN:Rain or wind will not keep Cubs from their assigned fun…ONLY DANGEROUS WEATHER will cause us to seek temporary shelter. Day Camp does not stop due to "drippy" conditions. Have your rain poncho handy and proceed as planned. (Hint - trash bags make great disposable ponchos).

CAMP DEN HOMES:Sunday afternoon (June 9th) camp will be open from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm for individual packs to set up their Den Homes. Camp shirts and schedules will be distributed at this time.

Den Homes: This will be your home for the next five days. It may be decorated in whatever tasteful manner you and your pack decides using the theme of Camp. Items you should consider:

1. Tent or canopy for shelter2. Coolers with sufficient ice for storage of food3. Closable container for supplies4. Hygiene supplies (hand sanitizers, paper towels, etc.…)5. Trash bags for cleanliness (also make excellent rain coats in emergencies)6. Decorations for your den home (theme related – be sure to display pack number)7. Den Flag (don’t forget to include your pack number)8. Container for drinking water storage9. Drinking cups or water bottles10. Pack YELL or CHANT

TrashEach night please take home your trash from the den home area. PLEASE DO NOT PUT YOUR TRASH IN THE CITY PARK DUMPSTERS. The city donates the use of the park; please don't expect them to pay to haul off YOUR TRASH.

Parents or family coming for closing ceremony do not need to be listed on attendance sheet. The cubs and adults are to be listed on separate sheets. Please neatly print names on the appropriate attendance sheet. When completed, make 1 copy to use during the week and return the original sheet into the registrar. Every day at check-in mark the appropriate column for all boys and adults in attendance. If a boy or adult is not present, you need to know why they aren’t in attendance. DO NOT LEAVE TOWN OR YOUR MEETING AREA WITHOUT KNOWING WHERE EVERY REGISTERED BOY IS. If cub or adult leader can’t attend, mark the day accordingly. Adult leaders, den chiefs, cubs and visitors are REQUIRED to check-in every day upon arrival and checkout every day before departing camp. PLEASE! Check in and CHECK OUT! EARLY RELEASE PROCEDURES:If a child needs to leave before the end of that day’s camp, the Early Release Form must be filled out and turned in the day before and must be on file at Headquarters. The form will include the time and date of early departure and the name and relationship of the person the cub will be leaving with. When the authorized individual arrives at camp they must check-in with the registrar at the Administration Headquarters Pavilion, produce a picture ID, even if they are the parent or guardian, and wait for the cub to be brought forward. When the cub is ready to check out, the designated pick-up person will accompany him to the Camp Registrar’s table along with an adult leader from the pack. Signatures will be required by the Authorized Individual, the Unit Leader, and the Camp Director or the Sr. District Executive. The Early Release Form must be filled out in its entirety. If this fails to happen the cub will not be allowed to leave and the situation will be handled in the appropriate manner. The above steps are NOT an option. It is an absolute requirement. It is our duty to provide a safe experience for all those involved.

EVALUATION SHEETS:Evaluation forms will be handed out during the week. Please take a moment and help us make next year’s Day Camp even better! We value your opinion and ask for your honest evaluation of our time at camp. Unfortunately, we cannot control the weather, bugs, or Mother Nature. Sorry! Please ask the Cubs for their opinion, too. Return the forms when you pick-up your packets on Friday. FIRST AID:The First Aid station will be located in the Headquarters area. ALL injuries and illnesses must be reported to the First Aid station as soon as possible. The camp nurse/doctor will remove any ticks while day camp is in session. Parents should be made aware of the need to check their cub scout for ticks after returning home every day. Poison Ivy is also present, so the necessary precautions should be taken.

HEALTH FORMS:EVERYONE attending day camp, no matter how long their stay, must have a completed health form on file. This includes every cub, den chief, staff, visitors, and all walking leaders. All lines on health forms MUST be filled out. Make sure birth date, pack number and all emergency contact information is completed. It is imperative that we be able to contact someone in the event of emergency or camp cancellation. Mark down all medical conditions – we don’t want any surprises. Leaders need to know about all special health needs as well as the camp staff. The form must be signed and dated. The health form changed in 2011 and the Annual Health and Medical record, Parts A and B, is the only form acceptable in 2013. Please fill out the parts completely in order to be accepted. (Forms online and attached)

MEDICATION:We need to be aware of all medications taken, whether taken at camp or not. Walking Leaders will be responsible in dispensing medications. The parent or guardian must send a note stating the purpose of the medication as well as the time it needs to be taken. ALL medication must be in its regular container. Walking Leaders may also carry individual inhalers but MUST record them with the First Aid Officer. Forms will be given to the Walking Leaders so they can record all medications given or inhaler use. These forms MUST be turned in daily to First Aid.

EMERGENCY/SECURITY PLANS

ANIMALS: Keep Cubs away from any animals and notify Administration immediately. No Pets are to be in camp.

CAMPER NO SHOW: If a pack shows up without a Cub, they will be responsible to be able to report to the Registrar why the Cub is not at camp. If the pack leaders don’t know, where the Cub is, they will be responsible to call the parents of the Cub and find out where he is or why he is not at camp.

COMMUNICATION SYSTEM: An Air Horn will be located at the Administration Headquarters to alert campers. Also, cell phones will be at the Administration Headquarters for any emergency phone calls in or out of camp.

EARLY CAMPER RELEASE: If a Cub Scout needs to leave before the end of that day’s camp, an early release note from the parent or guardian MUST be turned in to the Camp Registrar that morning at check-in. The note should include the time, date of early departure and the name and relationship of the person the Cub will be leaving with. When the pick-up person arrives at Camp, they must check-in with the Camp Registrar and have proper identification. The Camper Departure Notice must be filled out in its entirety. If this fails to happen the Cub will not be allowed to leave and the situation will be handled in the appropriate manner.

EMERGENCY TRANSPORTATION: There will be a vehicle at the Administration Headquarters area for emergency transportation.

FATALITY: Institute Crisis Communication Plan by the District Executive.

FIRE: In the event of a fire the immediate area will be evacuated. If the fire poses a threat to the entire camp a warning of three (3) long air horn blasts will be sounded and the complete camp area will be evacuated to the parking lot. The entire group will stay together. The adult for each pack will take a roll call and report to the Camp Registrar ASAP.

FIRST AID: A Health Officer will be on duty during Day Camp hours. Bring all health related issues to the Medical Station.

HEAT: Everyone should drink ample amounts of water to keep hydrated. Avoid drinking sugary drinks or soda. Each pack should have the necessary supply of coolers and ice. If someone becomes over heated get them in the shade and apply cool damp cloths to the back of their necks. They should slowly sip water. If they are not feeling better within 15 minutes or start to vomit, accompany them to the First Aid Station. Remember to apply sunscreen and wear a hat.

INJURIES AND ACCIDENTS: Bring all injured people to the First Aid Station located at the Admin Headquarters. If you feel the injury is serious enough that moving the injured person should be avoided, send someone to the Headquarters immediately to report the situation. Please keep the emergency area clear for all emergency vehicles and staff to work.

INTRUSION PLANNon-Aggressive intruder: The person should be escorted to the Administration Headquarters and their reason for being in camp should be questioned. After the Camp Director and Program Director are satisfied, the person may be allowed to stay or asked to leave camp. They may be an unaware visitor wanting to use the area.

Aggressive intruder: If an aggressive person enters camp with or without a weapon, the camp staff will sound 1 short horn and then immediately call 911. All leaders and scouts are to scatter in all directions as fast as they can. This makes a much more difficult target. The Director, Program Director and adult staff will ensure safety until law enforcement arrives. After the emergency has subsided, five (5) short blasts will be sounded on an air horn and everyone should gather at the Administration Headquarters. Leaders will take roll and report to the Camp Registrar.

10

LIGHTNING: In the event of a lightning storm we will go to National Guard Armory or American Legion building and continue plan b or c in side until the storm is over, or the all clear of lightening has been announced. The pack leader will need to take roll call and check in with the Camp Registrar ASAP.

LOST CHILD: If a child becomes lost, the adult leader must report to the Administration Headquarters immediately. The Day Camp staff will begin a search of the entire area. Individual packs will not search for anyone.

NAMETAGS: EVERYONE involved with or attending camp will be required to wear a nametag at all times. Leaders should collect nametags before departing camp for the day (this is a good way to take roll) and hand them out every morning before camp (also a great way to take roll.) This will help prevent lost tags. If you see someone without a nametag please report it to the Administration Headquarters immediately.

Adult leaders will be issued a colored wristband that must be worn on the designated wrist all day. A new color will be used each day.

RAIN: In case of rain, camp will go on as planned. Please dress appropriately to be out in it to go to classes. We will move some classes under shelter and go on as scheduled.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS: In the event of a severe thunderstorm with high winds and lightening a warning of two (2) long air horn blasts will be sounded and the entire camp will gather at the National Guard building. The adult leader of each pack will take roll call and report to the Camp Registrar ASAP.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT: Sexual harassment is not allowed at camp! This will include:

1. Jokes that may warrant sexual comments.2. Actions that are sexual.

If you see or suspect sexual harassment towards any staff or Jr. Staff you need to report it to the Director/Program Director/or SDE. The proper treatment and investigation will take place.

SICKNESS: If anyone becomes sick at Day Camp, they should report to the First Aid Station with a leader. If designated emergency contact needs to be called, the Registrar will call them.

TORNADO WATCH: If a tornado watch is issued for our area, camp will still be in session and the Camp Director will be notified of the changing weather conditions.

TORNADO WARNING: BEFORE CAMP – If a tornado warning has been issued before camp has started, walking leaders should call Matt Specht’s phone to check for instructions DURING CAMP – If a tornado is approaching or a warning has been issued, ONE (1) LONG air horn blast will be sounded. All in attendance at camp will quickly and calmly go to the National Guard Armory. The adult leader of each Pack will do a roll call and report to the Camp Registrar ASAP. Stay calm!

WEATHER HAZARDS: We have the Thunderbolt system which will help in detecting any lightning and severe weather headed our way. Training for weather can be done online just go to the HOAC/BSA website.

Ten Youth Protection Policies

After selecting the best possible leaders, further protection for children are structured into the program. The following policies have been adopted to provide additional security for youths in the program. In addition, they serve to protect adult leadership from situation in which they are vulnerable to allegations of abuse.

1. Two-deep leadership. Two registered adult leaders or one registered adult leader and a parent of a participant, one of whom must be 21 years of age or older, are required on all trips and outings. The chartered organization is responsible for ensuring that sufficient leadership is provided for activities of the Order of the Arrow as well as provisional unit activities.

2. No one-on-one contact. One-on-one contact between adults and your members is not permitted. In situations that require personal conferences, such as a Scoutmaster’s conference, the meeting is to be conducted in view of other adults and youths.

3. Respect of Privacy. Adult leaders must respect the privacy of youth members in situations such as changing into swimming suits or taking showers at camp and intrude only to the extent that health and safety requires. They also need to protect their own privacy in similar situations.

4. Separate accommodations. When camping, no youth is permitted to sleep in the tent of an adult other than his own parent or guardian. Councils are strongly encouraged to have separate shower and latrine facilities for females and when separate facilities are not available, times for male and female use should be scheduled and posted for showers.

5. Proper preparation for high-adventure activities. Activities with elements of risk should never be undertaken without proper preparation, equipment, clothing, supervision, and safety measures.

6. No secret organizations. There are no “secret” organizations recognized by the Boy Scouts of America. All aspects of the Scouting program are open to observation by parents and leaders.

7. Appropriated attire. Proper clothing for activities is required – for example, skinny-dipping is not appropriate as part of Scouting.

8. Constructive discipline. Discipline used in Scouting should be constructive and reflect Scouting’s values. Corporal punishments are never permitted.

9. Hazing prohibited. Physical hazing and initiations are prohibited and may not be included as part of any Scouting activity.

10. Junior leader training and supervision. Adult leaders must monitor and guide the leadership techniques used by junior leaders and see that BSA policies are followed.

These policies represent the long-standing commitment that the Boy Scouts of America use in ensuring the protection of our youth. Adherence to them greatly minimizes the opportunity for abuse to occur within the BSA program.

PARENTS NOTE

Dear Parents:

Day Camp is just around the corner and I know your son is looking forward to five days of fun and adventure. So that camp will be a time to remember, I would like to share some thoughts with you.

1. We will leave each day from ________________________at ______am. We will return around ______ pm at__________________________________. If your son cannot attend camp on any day, please call ________________. The camp emergency phone number is 816-260-3859 or 660-233-2994. Be aware that this is to be used ONLY for emergencies. Be sure your son's health form has been completed, signed and returned to me by __/__/__.2. Your son will need to bring daily:

a. 1 canteen or bottle of water (purchased or homemade - you may want to freeze water in it nightly.)b. Sack lunch - a cooler will be provided for storage, but do not send mayonnaise, fish or other items thatspoil easily. Please do not send pop/soda to drink. Water or Gatorade works best for this type of outing.c. Whatever the weather, your son might get wet during the activities at camp, so please send a towel and/ordry clothes.

3. Camp uniform will consist of the Day Camp T-shirt and coup, jeans or shorts, sturdy shoes (tennis shoes) and socks. NO SANDALS. Since we will be in the sun, you may want to send a hat. Be SURE your son's name and our pack number is on all items that can be separated from him.4. ABSOLUTELY NO KNIVES OR ANY KIND OF WATER GUNS5. Rain gear should be sent upon need. A garbage bag makes a great disposable raincoat. It is your decision whether or not your son attends camp on rainy days - camp will not be canceled due to rain.6. Any medication should be sent to camp with a walking leader, along with written instructions in the original prescription bottle. The medication can be dispensed by the Walking Leader. Immediate need medications (Inhalers, bee sting kits, etc…) must be maintained with the walking group. A medical log will be kept by each unit detailing any and all medications (prescription or “Over the Counter”) that are dispensed.7. A list of achievements that your son has earned at camp will be sent home for you to record in his book at the end of Day Camp.8. There will be items for sale at the Trading Post, so you might want to send some money for purchases.9. Your son will be in the GREAT OUTDOORS all day and might come in contact with poison ivy. You may want him to bathe immediately upon arriving home using Fels Naphtha Soap or Tecnu, which is best for removing ivy oils. Washing his clothes immediately also prevents poison ivy from spreading.10. Check for chigger bites and ticks daily. Apply bug repellent each morning thoroughly around tight places in clothing (socks, waistbands, etc.)11. If for any reason your child must be picked up at camp by you or someone you designate, a signed note from home must be sent the morning (or earlier) of the event. Please identify who will be picking up the child and at what time. (Arrangements must be made with the pack for the details of the pickup.) The person (even if it is a parent) will be asked to present picture identification to the camp director before your child is released. Any child leaving early must be checked out by 2:00 in the afternoon, no later and no exceptions.12. Any child repeatedly causing problems will be sent home. With your help and cooperation, Day Camp will be a Fun experience he will always remember.
