What does it mean for residents when a city’s ethnic composit ion changes rapidly?

What are the main benef its of living in an ethnically diverse city?
Ethnic diversity means a diversity of experiences, tradit ions, and ways of thinking. It makes acity vibrant and excit ing for all of its cit izens instead of just a select few. Ethnic diversity canbring hidden problems to light, but it also provides new opportunit ies and reinvigorates publicspaces and tradit ions that might otherwise wither with age and to resolve those problems ina more universally beneficial way.
What are some potential challenges of living in an ethnically diverse city?
There is some empirical evidence that racial/ethnic diversity is associated with lower socialtrust amongst neighbors. Probably relatedly, cultural tradit ions and styles can create frictionor tension. The old tradit ions of the prior residents that may seem insensit ive orunwelcoming to new residents and the new tradit ions of the new residents may seeminvasive or threatening to the old residents. Finding a way to respect tradit ions andencourage change is dif f icult . Similarly, new populations often need and expect dif ferenttypes of services from a city or community that the city did not foresee, like translationservices.
What does it mean for residents when a city’s ethnic composit ion changes rapidly?
It depends on why that composition is changing. When more advantaged ethnic groups aref leeing a city, that’s a sign of economic divestment (think of the intense and deleteriouseffect of white f light to the suburbs in the 60s and 70s on cit ies). On the other hand, and farmore common today, ethnic compositions are changing as immigrants are moving to newdestination cit ies and whites are returning to the urban space. Those are signs of a city withan improving economic base and a reinvigoration of that city’s cultural and social life.
In other words, while there may be some tension at f irst, as new residents and old residentsf igure out how to become neighbors and partners in a city’s community, increased ethnicdiversity because of in-migration is a sign of a healthy, vibrant city.

How can businesses ef fect ively achieve true diversity in the workplace?
Expect to screw up! empower new employees to challenge long-held assumptions about how the workplaceshould operate. Question whether or not the tradit ional credentials and markers of prestigeare good for identifying a diverse group of candidates (the best workers don’t always haveIvy League degrees, or college degrees at all). Work as hard as possible to not be defensivewhen challenged and remember that research has shown that diversity is related to successin business.
What kinds of programs should state and local governments develop in order topromote the benef its of cultural diversity?
One of the biggest hurdles is not in becoming diverse; it ’s in creating cross-culturalinteraction. State and local governments should priorit ize cross-cultural interactions in theirefforts. But, and this is the hard part, do so in ways that don’t make the burden of thatinteraction fall on the new members of the community. Make diversity a part of every pieceof business and every opportunity, to the point where looking for cultural diversity becomesthe norm, not the exception.
