Wallonia uses two types of production:

• Traditional grape varieties (Pinot noir, Pinot gris, Pinot Auxerrois, Chardonnay…);

• Hybrid grape varieties (Solaris, Bacchus and Helios for white, Regent and Limberger for red…).

There are three AOPs – appellations d’origine protégée (Protected Appellations of Origin):

• Côtes de Sambre et Meuse wines;

• Crémants de Wallonie sparkling wine;

• Vins mousseux de Qualité de Wallonie or Wallonia Quality sparkling wines.

and a designation with indication géographique protégée (IGP) or Protected Geographical Indication:

• Vin de Pays des Jardins de Wallonie local wine.

Discover the Wallonia Wine Growers Association and their members: www.vigneronsdewallonie.be

Amongst the most popular spirits in Wallonia we find the different varieties of Pékèts (alcohol made from grains or berries distilled mainly in the Meuse region, also called genièvre or Genever gin), Maitrank (a seasonal wine from the Arlon region made from sweet woodruff flowers macerated in Moselle wine with, among other things, slices of oranges), Eau de Villée (a lemon liqueur made in the Distillerie de Biercée) or even The Belgian Owl whisky produced in the Province of Liège…

Walloon wines are mainly white, sparkling and sweet wines but you also find some red wines. The annual production of bottles is almost a million units.

The main varieties of Wallonia’s wines and spirits

WALLONIA WINE AND SPIRITS ROUTE

Belgians are great lovers of wines and spirits which they like to associate with the culinary arts and also with cultural and social exchanges!

The history of Walloon vineyards goes back to the Middle Ages. In the 14th century every town had their own vineyard. The production of wine was abandoned during the Renaissance and started again in 1960s. Since the beginning of the 21st century and mainly these last ten years, a keen interest in wine has become apparent. More and more wine growers have embarked on this great adventure. There are 230 vineyards in Belgium including a little more than 150 in Wallonia. Only 25 to 30 wine growers sell their produce. Alongside the work of these

passionate people, associations, clubs and other tasting schools are emerging.

Spirits are more popular than ever, and not just for finishing a good meal or celebrating a lovely event in a festive way. The menus of numerous cocktail bars, which are flourishing in our regions, are full of them. Belgians also know how to enjoy the brandies, liqueurs, fruit wines and whiskies produced in Wallonia that are renowned well beyond our borders.

Along this Wallonia Wine and Spirits Route, you’ll meet producers amid their vines or on a hillside, in their wine cellars, or in their distilleries.
