Wal-Mart: An Organizing Paper

This is a time of organization. Capital arranges and consequently work must organize. Of the four

functions of management organizing is vital in attaining the targets set by an organization and

building the greatest use of the existing resources. Wal-Mart is one of the world’s leading merchants.

It is important that there must be organization of work. A corporation that big has numerous stores,

delivery networks, inventory, and staffs all over the world. The choice to make respectable use of

those assets is very difficult, and one of the greatest significant conclusions to make. As an

organization such as Wal-Mart produces, so does the complication of that choice. For Wal-Mart to

succeed such a massive amount of resources and resources it should depend on the organizational

structure to proficiently transport the organizing purpose. The second function of management is

organizing, described as the method among which leaders coordinate and hire an organization’s

human, tangible, and fiscal resources.

For a business to be effective, it is vital to fully comprehend and use the organization function. The

smallest error created by the management might influence the organization severely by making

absent business and output, additional work and expenditure, and other critical matters. Managers

must consider when employed via the organization function of management it is imperative to

guarantee they have all the means needed to accomplished the organizations goals, and efficiently

hire those resources. Likewise management must retain in mind that the assets collected sufficiently

help all parts of the organization and how it works. For an organization like Wal-Mart those assets

are extended all over the world which significantly amplifies the struggle of handling the organization

function of management. Since additional complexity management is accountable for cautiously

achieving the organization function of management and emphasis on making selections that attain

actual results. (Management Research, 2010)

Wal-Mart functions more than 1,200 stores all round the world that markets millions of diverse things

that span from office goods to hunting outfits. Wal-Mart likewise has an online store that offers many

things not located in the stores. Transferring that much manufactured goods obliges Wal-Mart to

handle every single article in their stock throughout the world carefully to have every store effectively

Page 2: WalMart Samples

stocked and guarantee there is adequate manufactured article to meet the demand. To do this Wal-

Mart’s organization must carefully operate through the organizing function of management to

maintain stock, trace what stores need and what inventory and the quantity, and guarantee that the

inventory is collected on the roster.

One important way Wal-Mart has enhanced how it classifies is by demanding the providers to use

radio frequency identification labels on the all of the manufactured goods they sell to Wal-Mart. By

exercising this technique Wal-Mart can store the product in key delivery centers and classify the

product by what is transporting and when. Things not transported directly are separated from items

shipping out in the near future. The tags also allow Wal-Mart to identify what product goes to what

distribution center based on what stores will need. Once the product is in the store the tags help the

store track on hand inventory and the tags also help provide data on sales. Wal-Mart can identify

what things are selling and which ones are not. That is vital info to have to establish pricing and

continuance of buys from precise suppliers. An analysis was completed on the ID labels that

pronounce that the tags have assisted to drop cost and improve effectiveness to extraordinary

levels. The report presented that the labels have increased efficiency by moderate numbers and

lower cost by a good percentage. (Management Research, 2010)

Wal-Mart recognized that organization is an important issue that desired to be tackled through

management and with the use of tools it could move overhead the rest in organizing. Technology

has also helped Wal-Mart through the organizing purpose by giving a quick and well-organized way

to set of connections globally and handle personnel, manufactured goods, and distribution centers

all around the world. An additional fascinating detail is how the dissemination centers for Wal-Mart

exercise technology to organize and speed up product drive. Wal-Mart has pre-programmed boosts

and that unloads the merchandise, store it in the correct place, yank the products, and pack them

back on a truck as desired. An additional feature of organizing is how a business hires its

employees. This is a new area Wal-Mart has expended technology to assist in organizing the task.

Through using technology Wal-Mart can automatically pay personnel and trace what is being

withdrawn from each paycheck. Without a shred of doubt, technology is an enormous issue in how

Wal-Mart runs the organization function of management. An organization like Wal-Mart cannot

estimate how it is acting centered on just periods of financial growth. Wal-Mart comprehends this

and maintains to manage the organization function with extraordinary levels of factor. Over the past

few years, Wal-Mart has confirmed how effective they are with organizing stock list and personnel

using some groundbreaking technology. Eventually Wal-Mart has used organization to drop cost for

equally the company and the customer.

Organizing is fundamentally vital for any organization to produce and sustain, particularly one that

functions on the level that Wal-Mart operates on. All stages of management must be aggressively

Page 3: WalMart Samples

implicated in the organizing function, and must continuously be watching for new and effective ways

to achieve the purposes of the organization. By organizing the material assets and the human assets

in technology Wal-Mart has presented all of the opposition in the merchandizing department. Wal-

Mart’s capability to organize merchandise and people on a global level is a demonstration to how

good the management of the organization uses the four functions of management.

Walmart Organization Paper

Wal-Mart: Organization Paper

The management function in an organization is usually related to effort, authority, and

responsibilities of the management of that firm. Motivation of the workforce within these

organizations handles the employees, and other personnel to work within a team environment.

These teams will accomplish a goal; management must organize the employees into teams that

have work that is related to the final goal. However, the development of an organization must include

knowledge of the task, human resources, assets, and monetary allowances. The Wal-Mart

organization is a force in the retail industry; there are over 7,000 stores around the country. These

stores also include the Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart supercenters and warehouses in Canada and Mexico.

Wal-Mart, when measured by its total revenue, is the largest retailer, that is measured by both net

sales and income increases from its operating stores. Its primary products and service lines

generally lie within the competition of its Discount and Variety Retail, as well as Electronics and Drug

stores, Pharmacies, Appliances, and Gasoline sales (Hoovers, 2008).

Physical Assets

Wal-Mart includes physical assets within its organization that are developed in such a way that

allows for utilizing efficient methods in order to manage these assets. Such factors of its environment

are quite evident in one example, its retail prices. This is important because in essence, if Wal-Mart

was less efficient in managing its physical assets, more money will have to be spent, and profits will

decrease (as a result of the lack in maximizing profits), and its competitors will drive it out of the

market. However, this is not the case with Wal-Mart. The various consumer goods that it provides

which are purchased are usually priced so low, driving other businesses out and keeping its

customers happy with its commonly advertised signs of bargain "roll-backs". It causes much

Page 4: WalMart Samples

influence on both other businesses and inflation as well. With this being said, its main competitors of

these industries are within a landscape that includes, Costco Wholesale, and Target. While these

retailers have shifted most of their attention on selling to the consumers goods at higher prices (thus

receiving higher profits per unit, yet sells fewer units on a downside), Wal-Mart is able to remain

profitable as it has the ability to sell more units, surpassing these other retailers.

Monetary

Its cost structure has been built upon the foundation of offering quality goods at low, discount prices;

furthermore, this structure has been able to thrive through the means of present negotiations with

both suppliers and its own distribution network (Hoovers, 2008). These benefits have spread as Wal-

Mart uses its market power to compensate consumers with "everyday low prices" while still making a

significant healthy profit. When compared to other retailers of this kind Wal-Mart has lower and more

competitive prices. Wal-Mart still strives to outperform other retailers while in a difficult industry.

However, this has not hindered there favorability among most of their customers, these type of huge

supercenters tend to have an impressive customer base. Wal-Mart has monopolized this retail

market with there own strategic organization plan.

Human Resources

The effectiveness of human resources is very significant in the success of Wal-Mart and there

strategic plans. The organization has to remain a profitable company in the long run if they are to

meet the objectives of the long term goals (Human Resource, 2008). Human resources are usually

the driving force in any organization; they are the part that helps ensure profitability and success of

the organization. This depends on the monitoring of responsibilities, workplace changes, strategies,

planning, new employee orientations, appraisals, records maintenance. Human resources

department must make sure that all management and employees adhere to all federal laws that

govern the management of labor. Additionally, they must make sure that labor laws and government

policies are administered and followed in occurdance to the law.

Knowledge

The information systems are how Wal-Mart acquires their knowledge division in order to properly

tackle surrounding locations for its stores, which include demographic indicators. These indicators,

such as the rate of population, density, and unemployment rate, should be carefully monitored and

noted, considering that they measure the pulse of the economy and its various declines and

increases within the economy and the effects onto the market scene. However, in a non-economical

sense, these demographic factors influence Wal-Mart and the customers. Population, density,

unemployment rate, etc. all affect Wal-Mart’s revenue sales and whether they are currently profitable

Page 5: WalMart Samples

or in a stagnation. An example of demographic factors might include a population's age and location

and its influences on the natural purchases of that area (and more specifically, within Wal-Mart).

These economic indicators should be carefully monitored and noted, considering that they measure

the pulse of the economy and its various declines and increases within the economy and the effects

onto the market scene.

Technology

Technological advances can vary in many forms, such as a considerable factor of either acquiring or

dropping a technological good, such as Linux PC, which was recently dropped since a lack of

interest from the consumers existed. Wal-Mart must acquire what is the latest innovations and offer

them at a low price to the public, which will draw in more consumers, as well as ridding itself of those

which are no longer in a substantial amount of demand (i.e. Linux PC). New products are a must.

Also, the developing complexity of the roles of organization management within technology has

prompted individuals to develop modern solutions to arising challenges. Wal-Marts online trend is

huge in the industry, because it boosts sales for the company. Additionally, profits are optimized with

online inventory.

Although, Wal-Mart has streamlined the online business, it must utilize information to reduce cost,

and to save more money for the organization and consumers. The organization plan has given Wal-

Mart the edge in being effective with using the resources through management. The concept is using

the resources such as machines and labor that they already have. The resources are defined by

Wal-Mart and are subsequently followed by the activities executed by these resources. Thus, it

yields profitable returns every fiscal year and continues to stay ahead of the game. Therefore, it is

essential that Wal-Mart views its above resources as a vital element of the organization’s strategic

plans to guarantee efficiency and productivity of the company, leading it to be competitive and

profitable.

Organization Paper

Introduction

How Wal-Mart use the Organization Function of Management

Organizing is one of the basic functions of management, which fallow the planning function of

management. According Management Study Guide (1998-2009), in the organization, function is

where takes place the synchronization and combinations of the organization physical, financial, and

human resources. Wal-Mart recognizes the importance of its physical assets, monetary, human

resources, and technology and had used them in to become the world largest retail stores. Wal-Mart

management could use the organization function of management effectively by combining its

resources to maximize its full potential.

Wal-Mart

After traveling around the nation Sam Walton realized that the nation was in need a new type of

retail store. Trusting in his vision with his wife Sam gather the money necessary to open the first

Wal-Mart in Rogers, Arkansas in 1962. as the time went by Sam Walton was only able to have 15

stores in 1972; however after Wal-Mart when public by the end of the decade Sam already own 276

stores in 11 different states. By 1989 Sam own more than 1, 400 Wal-Mart and was making over $

one billion in profits. In the present is Wal-Mart in 14 different countries and is making over $ 26

billion revenues while employing around 2.1 million people. The only way in which Wal-Mart could do

this is by organizing its structure and combining its resources to maximize its full potential (Wal-Mart,

2009)

Monetary

Wal-Mart is a multibillion dollar corporation; therefore how they manage their financial is essential for

the success of the corporation. Wal-Mart monetary structure is built based in the foundation of it

principles “We save people money so they can live better" (Wal-Mart, 2009).  Wal-Mart products are

always at a lower prices and cost a fraction its competitors that in the long way had benefits them to

stay ahead of its competitors. Wal-Mart environment seem quite challenging and difficult at times,

but Wal-Mart still have better sales than any other in the market by staying true to its principles is

Page 7: WalMart Samples

been able to keep progressing and be successively in what they do. Even if with their lower prices

they can wipe out many mothers and fathers store, they are also becoming theirs mayor supplier

helping them stay in business.

Physical Assets

Wal-Mart physical assets are built-in a way that allows making the most of them in an efficient way

throughout the organization. The most sight factor in Wal-Mart's environment is its lower prices. The

lower prices in the products they provide are the reason for why Wal-Mart keeps its customers

happy while driving other businesses out of the market. Walt-Mart success had influenced other

businesses to analyze its organization to see what they can do to improve the way in which they do

business. Some of its main competitors are Costco Wholesale, and Target. However, this competitor

attention is shitted shifted to selling the products to theirs' customers at higher prices and selling less

quantity, although Wal-Mart can stay lucrative by selling more units at a lower price surprising its

competitors (Hoovers, Inc., 2008).

Human Resources

According to Bateman and Snell (2009), the basic activities of human resources managements is

recruitment, selection and outplacement, training and development, performance and appraisals,

reward system and the ration of all external and internal customers. Wal-Mart Human Resources

Department have the responsibility to do an environment scanning to see for the current needs of

the organization then check wages, pay and benefits exist that will benefit the organization. Later,

they need to mach it with the needs of the organization to ensure that the human capital use in a

way in which they can reach their maximum potential. In Wal-Mart case, they have all supervisors

train in a variety area to ensure they are properly trained to deal with the most difficult situations. In

addition, Wal-Mart has a leadership and mentoring program that encourage women to become

leaders in the organization as part of their reward system. Wal-Mart have a philosophy that they

most if they do not treat with respect and dignity theirs' employees how will they expect to have

theirs' employees do the same with the customers. The best part is that human resources are

available 24 hours a day as most of their location open 24 hours a day (Retail Merchandiser, 2005).

Technology

Technology is everywhere and is essential for any organization to succeed in the competitive world.

In 2005 Wal-Mart move to have a RFID system that will be used to track the delivery of it suppliers.

The RFID system was put in practice to minimize the time an effort that takes to supplier when doing

any delivery. This wills aloud Wall-Mark to keep trap of the product from the supplier until it reach the

customers hands (Vijayan & Brewin, 2003). Another way in which Wal-Mart is using the technology

Page 8: WalMart Samples

available to monitor employees timecards were they can everyone is paid every minute they work

and that they take their breaks onetime. To stay ahead of its competitor Wal-Mart decides to change

in 2001 to renovate its technology by changing all its mainframes and databases to IBM systems.

Technology is the best tool Wal-Mart has to stay ahead of its competitors and still meet the constant

changing needs of its internal and external customers (Deango B, 2001).

Conclusion

Wal-Mart monetary grew because they struggle to have lower prices and sell more units that keep

the customers happy. Human resources had play a big impact on Wal-Mart success as they are the

one that manage the human capital of the organization and work to keep healthy relations with its

internal and external customers. Wal-Mart in its beginning stared as a concept that transformed and

grow to become the world's largest retail store. The way Sam Walton founder of Wal-Mart could

grow its physical assets and achieve such level of success, was by staying through the principles of

its company "we save people money so they can live better" (Wal-Mart, 2009).  Technology is

constantly changing and Wal-Mart is been able keep up with the changes of technology while

making track of its inventory simple and fast as possible. Wal-Mart is been able to maximize its

potential by maximizing its organizational function of management.

Wal-Mart                                                                                                                                     2

Wal-Mart was founded in 1962 by Sam Walton. Sam opened his first Wal-Mart store in Rogers, Arkansas. When Sam first opened the doors his vision was to save people money in order to help them live better lives. The logo therefore is “always low prices”. In order to keep the promise of low prices Wal-Mart needs to have a function of management in place that will help them reach its goal each year. This paper will evaluate the organizing function of Wal-Mart in regards to Human Resources and the technology it has focused on. The technology and Human Resources of an organization face new and challenging issues constantly, without the proper management and use of all resources available to an organization it may not be successful. In this paper I will as well discuss whether or not Wal-Mart has optimized technology and Human Resources for the effectiveness and efficiency of Wal-Mart.Human Resources in Wal-MartHuman Resources like in many other organizations is responsible for managing the workers, hiring new recruits, terminating workers that are not doing their job, put together health care packages and many other duties. According to Wal-Mart, “We look for HR associates who can lead and motivate others, and who understand the vital role that career opportunities play in improving lives” (2011).   Since Wal-Mart employs over 2 million people Human Resources plays a big part of Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has grown over time and has had hire not just merchants, but now it has a team for law, accounting, and real estate since “Wal-Mart also operates the largest real estate company in the United States, with an entire division devoted to building new stores, selling old stores, ad developing shopping centers around its store” (Human Resources Knowledge). Wal-Mart                                                                                                                                         3 The Human Resource department has developed programs in order to advance the Human Resource department and help all workers. Supervisors hold training on diversity issues. The organization as well holds leadership and mentoring programs to help women who would like the chance to become a leader for Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has recently had troubles with discriminations issues which the Human Resource department has handled with great care. “According to the New York Times, the Walmart settlement resolves all but 12 pending wage and hour lawsuits against the company. Some advocacy groups have suggested that Walmart settled the claims to avoid becoming the target of increased wage and hour enforcement that is expected under the Obama administration” (aboutlawsuits,2008).   This is only one of many issues that the Human Resource department has had to handle. Human Resources in any organizations needs to be there to not only help keep the organization moving forward and great, but to help all workers of the organization to receive fair and equal pay, equal advancement within the organization and all other equal and legal rights within the organization.Technology In Wal-MartTechnology has helped Wal-Mart move forward in many directions. Wal-Mart first opened the doors in 1962 since then it has moved forward with many new technologies.   In 1975 Wal-Mart decided in order to move the organization forward they needed to introduce a computer system which would make maintain inventory control in the warehouses and distribution centers easier for all involved. As well this would help keep and better prepare income statements for the organization. At that time to Wal-Mart put electronic cash registers in some of the stores which would help keep transaction record for point of sales in order to Wal-Mart                                                                                                                                       4

Page 10: WalMart Samples

maintain correct data on inventory. Since the success of the computer system in 1975 was good they decided they needed to have this in every store to be able to continue to grow and keep accurate records of all inventory. Now, that Wal-Mart had computer systems in all stores, warehouses and distribution centers this made the way for success in ordering merchandise from suppliers over the computer. It made it accurate so that they would not end up with too much of one product and not enough of another product. Wal-Mart then decided more technology would make it possible to find easier ways for point of sales(POS) data so they decided to begin a bar code system that scanned the POS. Since computers made it easy to keep records and data information on inventory Wal-Mart decided to go further ahead still by introducing Texlon hand held terminals which they could use to reorder merchandise and if they used it on shelf labels they could see how much of a certain product was ordered before. Then Wal-Mart went even further with technology and started using a data warehouse prototype that would store historical sales data.   Wal-Mart also started the Retail link system that would provide vendors with correct information of sale trends and its inventory levels. Too make that even bigger they began using the internet. Now today Wal-Mart finds new and innovated ways to further the technology the organization has anywhere from ordering merchandise for suppliers to being able to have consumers order Wal-Mart merchandise over the internet and shipped directly to their homes.Optimizing Human Resources and TechnologyLooking at all the information supplied above I would have to think that Wal-Mart has tried to optimize all it resources in Human Resources and technology. If they had not agreed to

Wal-Mart                                                                                                                                   5move forward by creating leadership and mentoring programs to better aid the workers of Wal-Mart then they may still be facing many more law suits in the future. Diversity is now being handled not only by Human Resources but by having supervisors have training meetings to help with diversity issues in Wal-Mart. Human Resources in Wal-Mart is always trying to come up with new and innovated ways to not only help workers but the organizations as well. Technology has played a big part in the success of Wal-Mart. Computers have made it easier to keep track of inventory, ordering merchandise and many other activities through Wal-Mart. I believe if Wal-Mart did not use the computer in the early stages of the business they would not have moved forward as fast as they did and grow as big as they are today.                        ConclusionWal-Mart is a fast growing organization that wants to keep prices as low as possible for the consumers. They are finding new ways everyday to be able to do this through advanced technology and great Human Resources teams. If Wal-Mart had not used computers as early as they did in the organization I am not sure that the organization would have grown as fast as it did and as big as it is now. Human Resources are moving forward with leadership and mentor programs for workers. Wal-Mart’s success had much to do with the technology and Human Resource department.

Wal-Mart                                                                                                                                       6

Wal-Mart continues to remain highly competitive when it comes to goods, services and low prices. In 2009 Wal-Mart reported a net on sales of $ 401, 244 million. (Walmartstores.com, 2010) The company seems to continue to do an excellent job in maintaining its monetary resources. Wal-Mart is steadily attracting customers with low prices on goods and services and progressively continues to be the leading retailer in the industry.

Conclusion

Wal-Mart has dealt with and has successfully overcome many factors influencing various levels of their management function. It takes a strong group of leaders and individuals striving and working together at implementing and following through with it to overcome obstacles and be successful. In order to effectively manage company resources such as human capital, and finances takes vigilant planning, an operational human resources department and proper employee training. Organizing Function of Management

Organizing is defined as the assembly and coordination of the human, financial, physical, informational, and other resources needed to achieve goals. (Bateman & Snell, 2009, pg. 20) This function is also referred to as the function used to build a dynamic organization. (Bateman & Snell, 2009, pg. 20) When looking at the organization process Sam Walton the founder of Wal-Mart made sure from the very beginning to keep up with his competitors. In 1972 Kmart expanded and at that time there were 15 Wal-

Page 12: WalMart Samples

Mart stores and Sam Walton could not afford to expand by building so he offered Wal-Mart stock on the New York Stock Exchange. Due to the large profit that occurred because of the sales of stock Wal-Mart could expand and by the 1980s they had 276 stores. Organizing is comprised of several organizational resources: physical assets, knowledge, money, and human resources.

Resources are organized effectively by the use of tools such as charts and or graphs. These tools will present the various functions of management for instance human resources activities and responsibilities, employee duties and responsibilities, recording relationships amongst upper and lower management. (Bateman & Snell, 2009, pg.290) Within each department there are specific methods being used which helps them in managing the resources provided to them. For example accounting and finance departments commonly use Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets and software such as QuickBooks.

Wal-Mart’s Organizing Function: Human Resources

The management and maintaining of the human resources department is vital when evaluating the effectiveness of the organizing function. “People are assets not commodities”. (Bateman & Snell, 2009, pg.337) Managers as well as their companies must work together to hire the right individuals for the job. Human resource management is responsible for staffing, training, performance appraisals, rewards, labor relations, wages, and benefits. (Bateman & Snell, 2009, pg. 354)

Worldwide Wal-Mart employs about 2.1 million associates, and depending on the size of the store there can be about 225 to 350 more associates in each store. According to Fortune Magazine 2010 reported that Wal-Mart ranked first on their list of most admired companies. This favorable rating is due to their sustainability leadership, corporate compassion, and employment opportunity. Wal-Mart’s staff practices the three basic beliefs and values established by Sam Walton in 1962. They are respect for individuals, services to our customers, and striving for excellence. Micromanaging is kept to a minimum and teamwork is highly encouraged by a style of leadership implemented back in the days of Mr. Walton called “servant leadership” where leaders work together with their employees. Wal-Mart also has an open door policy any issues which are questionable whether they ethical or immoral are brought to the attention of the store manager, market manager, and or the human resources department. In the past years Wal-Mart has faced several lawsuits in which their ethics has been questioned. Their policies of hiring, promoting, and equality have all been questioned in cases like the sexual discrimination of women in June 2001.

Wal-Mart business practices article of 2010 reported that a survey conducted by Wal-Mart indicated a rapid turnover of 70 % of employees that leave the company within the first year of employment and stated that it is attributed to the lack of recognition and inadequate pay of the employees. (Business Practices, para.5)

Despite these various issues that Wal-Mart has been faced with and the speculation that the human resources department does a poor job is just that. Wal-Mart in fact aims to take very good care of their employees. They claim that their organization is one of the best to workplaces, which offers

various health and wellness benefits. Wal-Mart offers 80 % coverage on to its eligible employees. Health care benefits such as doctor’s visits and annual checkups, pharmacy benefits, dental, business travel accident insurance, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment coverage (Walmartstores.com, 2010)

Monetary Resources

Wal-Mart like many other organizations is affected by many factors such as competitive pressures, insurance costs, market trends, economic conditions, cost of goods and services, and unemployment. (Walmartstores.com, 2010) Yet another issue they are constantly faced with is their wages.

Average Wal-Mart employees make anywhere from $ 12,000 to $ 17,000 which causes them to have to turn to the state for public assistance. Further reports show that employees on average take home less than $250 a week. (Business Practices, 2010) Full time employees make between $6 and $7.50 an hour and work from 28-40 hour weeks. According to Business Practices 2010 this pay scale indicates that employees of Wal-Mart with dependents are below the poverty line.

As mentioned previously the foreign exchange rate is a factor that Wal-Mart as a large retailer must beware of when maintaining their monetary and financial resources. Wal-Mart reported that fiscal year 2009 foreign exchange rates had a negative effect on international net sales by 2.3 billion. (Walmartstores.com, 2010) When compared to overall company net sales there was still a slight increase indicated despite the negative affect.

Wal-Mart also offer its employees various financial benefits to compensate stock option plans, employee’s discounts, profit sharing (401k plan), retirement accounts, and holiday and when determining the success of an organization. Being mindful and utilizing the organizing function will help not only determine and maintain current success but will aid in future and in preventing failure.
