Our opponents this evening are our near neighbours Cobham FC, and we extend a particularly warm welcome to all their players, officials and supporters, and of course to today’s three match officials. Their last visit here was for a pre-season friendly in June, but competitively we have not met since February 2019, when after leading 3-0 at half-time, we finally edged through 3-2 in the Combined Counties League Premier Division. That followed a 1-1 draw at Cobham the previous November. A 400 plus crowd, our largest attendance since moving to our new ground in 2017, saw us progress to the next round of the FA Cup after a hard-fought, tense, but enthralling encounter against a fine Guildford City side. Fans turned out in their numbers on the Friday evening to see the two Surrey clubs battle it out to try to preserve their unbeaten starts to the season. An early goal helped us settle into the tie, and our task was helped when the visitors were reduced to ten men following a sending-off after 63 minutes, a superb second goal scored with twelve minutes remaining then virtually clinching the win. We took the lead somewhat against the run of play after seven minutes through Harry Mills, who cut back to the left corner of the 6 yard-box to drill a low shot past the keeper.. We were remarkably denied the opportunity to double our lead after 25 minutes when Palace Francis was clearly brought down in the box, but the referee surprisingly saw no offence. The second-half continued to be a tight affair, but when City’s Da Silva picked up his second yellow card for tripping Jordayne Henry we became favourites to go through, and we got the buffer we had been looking for after 78 minutes with a terrific second goal. Alex Kelly sent Palace into the left of the box, and he dummied three defenders as he cut to the right before driving the ball in from close to the penalty-spot. We then created more chances, but were happy to go through with a 2-0 win. Last Saturday a superb hat-trick from Dominic Ogun looked to have given us a win over Guildford City for the second-game running as we led 3-1 after 52 minutes, but a spirited fight-back by the home side saw them take full advantage of some poor defending to take all three points.

Good evening and welcome to The Elmbridge Xcel Sports Hub for tonight’s Combined Counties League Premier Division South fixture.

Page 2: Walton & Hersham v. Cobham Tuesday 31st August 2021 KO 7 ...

After we had taken that two goal lead, coming back from 1-0 down, we looked to be well on course for the win as we were dominating play. During that dominant spell Alex Kelly had the chance to make it 4-1, only to be denied by a superb save by McEntegart. Had the City goalkeeper not kept out Alex’s shot, we would surely have gone on to the win, but the home side scored their second goal just a minute later, and the game swung from that point. City sensed they could now get something from the game, and began to work their way through our defence that failed to close them down in the final third. An equaliser soon came, and a fine fourth goal gave the home side a win that for much of the game had looked unlikely. Harry Mills was twice denied by good saves from McEntegart before City took the lead after 20 minutes with a shot from the right of the box. We equalised after 37 minutes with a terrific goal, Dom cleverly clipping the ball in at the near-post after Harry had made a tremendous run down the right. We looked to be unfortunate, when instead of getting a penalty, Dom was booked for simulation after going down in the box, and Alex then had a first-time shot deflected over the bar. We took the lead just a minute into the second-half, Dom scoring with a fine, far-post header from Reece Brewster’s inch-perfect free-kick. Seven minutes into the half Dom notched his hat-trick and put us 3-1 up with another fine first-time finish from Darryl Siaw’s low, right-side cross. Joe Hicks’ powerful header just failed to beat the fingers of McEntegart on his line, before the City keeper kept his side in the game. Alex was clear in the box, and looked certain to beat McEntegart with a low shot to his right, but the keeper stuck out a hand to just grab the ball and pull off a terrific save. Instead of being three goals down, just a minute later City were back in the game at 3-2 as we were guilty of backing-off, and an equaliser soon came in similar fashion with inroads in on the left. Guildford were then the dominant side, and their winner, when it came after 83 minutes, almost had a sense of inevitability about it, but it needed a terrific strike from outside the box. Let’s hope we can bounce back this evening after our 100% record went in such disappointing fashion. On Saturday we attempt to continue our FA Cup run as we play Beaconsfield Town of the Southern League Premier Division South in the 1st Qualifying Round. It should be noted that as our opponents’ home ground is currently undergoing redevelopment, the match will be played at Chalfont St. Peter FC, kick-off 3.00 pm. Unless the tie ends in a draw, in which case we would replay here in a weeks’ time, our next fixture would be on Saturday the 11th of September, when AFC Croydon Athletic come here in the Combined Counties League Premier Division South. We hope everyone enjoys this evening’s match and has a safe journey home afterwards, and we hope to see many of you supporting Swans at Chalfont St. Peter next Saturday for their important FA Cup tie.

A History of Cobham FC Cobham Football Club was formed on Friday the 5th of November 1886 by Founding

President the Hon. Alan Egerton MP and villagers connected with the local Coffee Tavern. The vicar offered to supply it with a football. On the 4th of November 1890, The Evening Telegraph reported on the death of our centre-half Arthur Smith, following injuries sustained in a match v. Kingston Wanderers. In 1892 the Club affiliated to the Surrey FA. The home ground was never settled, with various fields around the outskirts of the village being used at different times. During the late 1920s they played in the Kingston and District League, winning Division One in 1928/29 and 1929/30. Following the Club gaining intermediate status in 1933, Cobham won the Surrey Intermediate League Cup (Central) in 1933/34 and 1935/36. The Club achieved senior status in 1938 upon election to the new Surrey Senior League. The war years between 1939 and 1945 saw a vote to agree a temporary merger with the Avorians Sports Club to form Cobham Avorians and ensure local football continued. After the War, the Club made its home at Cobham Recreation Ground until 1955/6, when it moved to Anvil Lane, also known as the Leg o' Mutton Field. The club took its nickname from the word anvil and thus became The Hammers. Phil Walker and Trevor Lee of Millwall FC and cricketer Bob Willis of Surrey and England are amongst famous ex-players. During the 70s, 80s and 90s the club had a really good local feel, with the ground being a vibrant hub of football. The world famous rock band The Moody Blues played an annual charity match at Cobham Football Club, giving us our record attendance of 2,000 in 1974/75. The floodlights were installed in season 1996/97 and were christened with a game against Conference side Woking FC on the 18th of February 1997. The Hammers were founder members of the Combined Counties League, moving up from the now defunct Surrey Senior League. They finished second to Ash United in 1998/9. Amongst long serving stalwarts such as Dave Tippetts, who first joined the club in the 1980s, the pride of place on the clubhouse wall goes to a painting of Reg Madgwick, who served as a player, committee member and fund raiser. When he died in 1995 he requested his ashes be scattered on the pitch and left all his worldly possessions to the Club, and the decision was made to rename the ground The Reg Madgwick Stadium in his honour. The Club won the Combined Counties Premier League Challenge Cup in 2001/02, beating Bedfont FC 3-2. After the stand went up in 2004, the club was a mainstay in the Combined Counties Division One under the overall guidance until 2015 of the late Ken Reed, who died in 2018. After a new committee was elected in 2015, led by Dave Tippetts, the club has built its junior football, with 16 sides to compliment the men’s team, and the new seated stand, new fencing and the dual turnstile were put in during April 2016 to allow the ground to achieve a Grade D (Step 4) rating. 2017/2018 saw the Club promoted to the Combined Counties Premier Division under the guidance of Sam Merison, and the introduction of an Under 23 side to support the first team. In August 2019 the club was awarded the status of an FA Charter Standard Club. During the Covid years, Cobham enjoyed record cup runs in the FA Cup (1st Qualifying Round) and the last 16 of the FA Vase in 2020/21. The Club’s most recent trophies are the unique weekend double achieved by Pete Doherty’s Under 23s, winning the Surrey Elite Intermediate League's Reserve Division Covid Cup and Challenge Cup in 2021, beating Frimley Green Under 23s and Virginia Water Reserves, both on penalties. This adds to their 2019 triumph over SCR FC Under 23s, also on penalties, to win the Combined Counties Development League Cup. Committee stalwarts such as Ewemade Orobator and Mark Cornish have helped to grow the Club and gain many of the town’s businesses on board as sponsors and suppliers. The Hammers are on a firm footing for progression, with the town and families at the heart of our plans.

Great games at The Lane…….The recent death of Alan Gilzean brought back memories of the Scottish international’s four goals when Spurs came to celebrate the switch-on of Walton & Hersham’s new floodlights in 1965, with the star-studded visitors winning 8-1.

Walton & Hersham F.C. – “The Swans”

Walton-on-Thames F.C. was formed in 1895, and in 1945, following World War II, amalgamated with Hersham F.C. to form Walton & Hersham F.C., the present club. The united club immediately joined the newly formed Corinthian League and followed a poor first season with a hat-trick of Championships and a runners-up position. They also won the Surrey Senior Cup for the first time in 1947-48, beating Isthmian League neighbours Kingstonian 2-1 at Crystal Palace. Election to the Athenian League soon followed and in their first season, 1950-51, Swans finished runners-up and again won the Surrey Senior Cup at Palace, defeating the much vaunted Dulwich Hamlet 2-1. Great days, big crowds

These were golden days for the Stompond Lane side and the FA Amateur Cup Semi-Final was reached in successive seasons, 1951-52 and 1952-53, only for Swans to go out to Walthamstow Avenue and Harwich & Parkeston respectively. During this period the club enjoyed a tremendous following, and a record crowd of 10,000 were at the Lane in 1952 when the famous Crook Town were the visitors for an Amateur Cup tie. Stars of this era included Swans’ most famous player, England and Great Britain Olympic defender C.R. ‘Jack’ Neale, and the prolific Reg Sentance, still the club’s all-time top scorer. Some lean years followed, although the FA Cup First Round was reached for the first time in 1957-58, Southampton winning 6-1 before 6,000 people at Stompond Lane. Don Stoker’s popular sides of the early 1960’s brought cup fever back to the Lane and there were fine runs again in the FA Amateur Cup. Two late goals by the prolific and popular Brian Jenkins beat the star-studded Wimbledon side in the Surrey Senior Cup Final of 1960-61, and the trophy was retained against Sutton United the following season. After several years of mid-table respectability, Allen Batsford’s appointment as manager in 1967 heralded the start of the most successful period in the club’s history. At the end of his first season, a superb victory over a powerful Wimbledon side in the two legged Final secured the Premier Midweek Floodlit League title, the first of three, followed a year later by the winning of the Athenian League championship for the first time. The FA Cup First Round Proper was again reached in the following two seasons, only for Swans to lose to Barnet 1-0 in 1969-70 and Telford United 5-2 in 1970-71, both games being played at the Lane. The runners-up spot in the League was achieved in both those campaigns and the Surrey Senior Cup came back to Stompond Lane in 1970-71, Woking being defeated 3-0 in the Final. Election to the Isthmian ranks followed, with third place attained in the first season, 1971-72. Wembley at last

Then followed the most memorable season in the club’s history, 1972-73. The FA Cup First Round barrier was overcome for the first time with Exeter City being defeated 2-1 amid tremendous excitement at the Lane, only for visitors Margate to win by the only goal in the Second Round. Kingstonian were beaten 2-0 in the Surrey Senior Cup Final and the runners-up spot achieved in the League.

Page 16: Walton & Hersham v. Cobham Tuesday 31st August 2021 KO 7 ...

Then on the 14th of April 1973 the ultimate prize was gained at Wembley when 41,000 people saw a last-minute Roger Connell goal against Slough Town bring the FA Amateur Cup to Stompond Lane, the trophy being won without a goal being conceded, a record never to be equaled. Dave Bassett, Willie Smith and Connell also had the honour of playing for the England Amateur side. The following season Brian Clough’s Brighton & Hove Albion side were held 0-0 at The Lane in the FA Cup First Round, Swans pulling off a sensational result in the replay at The Goldstone Ground, a Clive Foskett hat-trick included in a 4-0 win. Sadly, when Batsford left for Wimbledon the following season the fine team broke up, the crowds drifted away, and relegation soon followed in 1975. The FA Cup First Round was surprisingly reached in 1975-76, and a young side put on a battling performance at Selhurst Park against Malcolm Allison’s Crystal Palace, only going down 1-0 to a late goal. Barren years followed, with the club several times being close to extinction. In the mid 1980’s the club was proud to have Sir Stanley Matthews as President, but sides flattered to deceive and only a draw in the final game of the 1986-87 season prevented relegation to Division Two. Promotion

After 20 years out of the top-flight, a young side under Neil Price at last gained promotion in 1993-94, and the following season the First Round Proper of the FA Cup was again reached, Swansea City winning 2-0 at the Lane. However Swans’ Centenary celebrations were spoilt by relegation after only two seasons back in the Premier, but under the management of Laurie Craker the team ensured the stay in Division One was as brief as possible, promotion being gained on the last day of the campaign. After a creditable first season back in the Premier Division it again proved to be a struggle to remain there, and at the end of the 1999-2000 season Swans finished in bottom spot and relegation again became a reality. Swans had to wait until the 2004-05 season before more success came to Stompond Lane after long-serving player Alan Dowson took over as manager in October. After defeat in his first match in charge, Dowson led the team to a record breaking 13 match winning sequence, fine runs in the FA Trophy and League Cup, and promotion as runners-up in the Ryman League Division One. The Surrey Senior Cup Final was reached for the first time in 31 years, the Swans only losing a thrilling game against AFC Wimbledon 2-1 after extra-time before close to 4,000 people at Woking. After a creditable first season back in the Premier Division a poor start to 2006-07 led to Dowson’s early resignation and eventual relegation yet again. Since then Swans remained in Division One, facing relegation fights on several occasions, until 2015-16, when a third from bottom finish finally saw them go down ending a 45 year unbroken stay in the Isthmian League. At the end of September 2017 Swans were forced to leave their home of 8 decades, Stompond Lane, when it was sold for development, the club moving to a new home at a purpouse-built Sports Hub in Waterside Drive. After two good seasons in the Combined Counties League Premier Division, a poor 2018-19 led to a bottom place finish and relegation to Division One. Then, following two seasons that remained unfinished due to the Covid-19 virus, Swans’ record of finishing in third and second places gained them promotion under a PPG (points per game) system, and they will now play this season in the new Combined Counties League Premier Division South.
