Trends impacting global networks

1. Cloud/SDN/NFV/Web-Scale IT is resulting in the need to re-think how networks are designed

• More traffic now destined for applications and infrastructure sitting outside the network perimeter

• Traditional networking technologies such as MPLS are now often just an expensive backhaul for 80%+ of the critical traffic running over the WAN – and can be an obstacle to achieving good performance

• Traditional network service providers remain strongly biased towards selling on-network capacity and “static” networks

2. Achieving a great user experience remains a challenge when long distances are involved

• WAN optimization is usually essential to mitigate the effects of latency

• Traditional optimization appliances are a very poor fit in a hybrid internal / external application environment

• The management model for WAN optimization needs to include deep expertise to interpret trends and anomalies that occur in the environment

3. Traditional toolsets for monitoring application performance may not be sufficient in a hybrid environment

• Monitoring user experience (and acting on deviations from “good”) when accessing key applications is essential

• Performance management services need to focus on vendor management, network configuration, handoffs to operations teams responsible for applications, cloud-based provider tools and configuration

What is WAN Optimization?

Key vendors in WAN Optimization marketplace:WAN Optimization refers to the process, methodologies, tools and technologies for improving data transfer and management processes over a wide area network (WAN). WAN optimization is used to increase the data transfer and access rate over enterprise networks

Typical WAN Optimization topology:

The need for WAN Optimization

Source: http://fasterdata.es.net/network-tuning/tcp-issues-explained/packet-loss/

IT leadership recognizes the importance of WAN Optimization in their networks: IDC survey shows the most important potential benefits of optimizing in-house and cloud application traffic

Latency, not bandwidth, is the main limiting factor on most WAN links where even a minimal amount of packet loss exists:

Significant technology benefits Clear business demand

Significant change in enterprise application environment

• Traffic is increasingly delivered to destinations outside the enterprise network

• Coevolve data show 70-80% of MPLS traffic on enterprise WANs destined for Internet – combination of business-critical public cloud traffic and web browsing

• 75% of Coevolve customers + prospects are trialing or have rolled out Office 365 on a global basis

• Innovative IT departments are moving IT infrastructure to Azure and Amazon Web Services at a rapid pace

• Business units often make decisions on enterprise-wide applications without close involvement from IT – Salesforce, Workday, SuccessFactors, etc.

• The trend is towards public cloud, but networks must support the hybrid environment to deliver high levels of performance to users

Re-thinking WAN Optimization for the next generation of applications

• Traditional WAN Optimization appliances are well-suited for internal, on-network applications

• Virtual appliances can be used in some IaaS deployments where supported by the vendor(s)

• Very limited support for optimizing SaaS traffic end to end (some options do exist for certain applications, e.g., Riverbed Cloud Accelerator)

A better technical, commercial and operational model is neededto support the hybrid environment most enterprises are moving towards

WAN Optimization as a Service

Coevolve provides a fully managed, end to end WAN Optimization as a Service solution powered by Aryaka’s technology platform

The solution offers end to end service and vendor management, including the access circuits and CPE at each site

Offered “As a Service” so the scalability and flexibility benefits of a cloud-based service can now be extended to WAN Optimization

The service is fully bandwidth provider agnostic – use the best of breed local / regional providers available at each site and benefit from reduced costs and better bandwidth scaling options

Powered By:

No capex-heavy appliances • No maintenance contracts • Scalable as bandwidth needs grow

Global WAN Optimization platform reach

25 global PoPs Deployed close to major

business centers – more than 95% of enterprise users within 20ms

High-performance private core between PoPs

Close proximity to all major cloud service providers – Azure, Amazon Web Services, Google, Salesforce and many others

Traffic is offloaded from the public Internet for the majority of the distance between the client and server for more predictable performance

Page 14: WAN Optimization Webinar

Key benefits• Significant cost savings on a TCO basis compared

with WAN Optimization appliances and/or private MPLS

• Provides a better performance path to next-generation cloud applications than traditional private WANs

• Leverages existing Internet connectivity investment at each site – access falling bandwidth prices and capacity increases

• Predictable network performance due to private core network between PoPs

• Deep insights into usage patterns for key business applications with real-time reporting on optimization and performance

The importance of vendor management

Management of more vendors is one of the key implications of increasing Internet adoption in the enterprise Lifecycle management of 3rd party providers (particularly ISPs) is a complex process when applied over a number of

geographies A reliable point of contact is needed for day to day management of locally-contracted services such as ISPs – activities

include:

o Polling of circuit IP addresses to provide proactive entry into incident management process

o Management of inventory database containing circuit IDs, contact and escalation processes for each underlying provider

o Incident management system and support process covering all underlying providers

o Advice, guidance and recommendations regarding new product availability, improved pricing, service quality metrics
