    Introduction

There are many good secondary schools to choose from in Wandsworth. Thisbooklet guides parents and their children through the admission process forSeptember 2010.

As well as giving details of all Wandsworth schools, we have also included brief information on others outside the borough boundary but within easy travellingdistance for most children.

The London-wide applications system means that wherever you live, you can listup to six schools on a single form. These do not all have to be schools in theborough where you live - although it is always a good idea to include at least onethat is close to home.

If you live in the borough of Wandsworth, you can apply using the printedapplication form at the back of this booklet or online atwww.wandsworth.gov.uk/admissions. Whichever method you choose, yourapplication must be received by 23 October 2009.

If you live elsewhere, you need to contact your own council for their booklet andform, or visit their website.

In the weeks leading up to 23 October you should take every opportunity to visitindividual schools. You will be able to speak to staff and form your own opinionof the schools suitability for your son or daughter.

It is also very important to read the admission criteria for the schools you areinterested in, to get an idea of whether your child is likely to be offered a place.

The Council is holding two information meetings for parents, which you areencouraged to attend. The details are set out opposite.

The final year at primary school is an important time in the life of every child. We hope that this booklet will help you prepare for the choices ahead.

The transfer process -step by step

STEP 1:Understandingthe processWandsworth Council is working with allother London borough councils to co-ordinate applications and the offer of places for all state schools in London.

Before you decide which schools toapply for and fill in the form, it is veryimportant that you understand how theprocess works:

You apply for any state school in anyarea on one form by 23 October 2009.

You complete the form issued by thecouncil in whose area you live. If youlive in the borough of Wandsworth, theform is included with this booklet. If you live elsewhere you will need tocontact your local council for theirbooklet and form. Alternatively, you canapply online atwww.wandsworth.gov.uk/admissions

You apply for up to 6 state schools onthe form and must put them in theorder you prefer them.

If any of the schools you apply forare in other boroughs, WandsworthCouncil will pass the details to theother borough councils. If you live inanother borough and apply for anyWandsworth schools, your local councilwill pass the details to WandsworthCouncil.

Your child will be consideredseparately for each school you applyfor, using the published admissioncriteria alone to decide whether ornot they can be offered a place.Details of other schools you haveapplied for will not be revealed toindividual schools, nor will they be told

the order in which you prefer theschool.

Before places are offered, WandsworthCouncil will check whether your childcan be offered a place at more thanone of the schools you applied for. If you have applied for schools in otherboroughs, we will also check withthose councils whether your child canbe offered a place.

If your child can be offered a placein more than one school, you will beoffered a place at whichever oneof these schools you said you wouldmost prefer.

Wandsworth Council, or your localcouncil if you live elsewhere, will post aletter to you on 1 March 2010 with theoutcome of your application for allthe schools you applied for. You shouldreceive this on 2 March. If you applyonline you can view the outcome onthe morning of 2 March, but you willalso receive a letter giving full details.

If you are not offered a place at aschool which you listed as a higherpreference than the school you areoffered, you will be able to be placedon the waiting list and will have theright to appeal against the decision.

STEP 2:CollectinginformationIt is important to collect as muchinformation as possible about theschools you want to apply for and theadmission procedures.

    You can do this by:

Reading this booklet (also available atwww.wandsworth.gov.uk/admissionswith links to school websites).

Occasionally, the lastplace available at a school is offered tothe first child from a family with multiplebirths. If this happens, the council willask the governing body of the school if an additional place can be offered, butthe decision will rest with the governingbody. If a place is not available, you willneed to decide whether to accept theplace offered, or secure places for thechildren in another school.

    Medical or social circumstances

If your child has an exceptional medicalor social reason for needing a place at aparticular school, you must state this onthe form. The letter must give reasonswhy the childs condition or

circumstances make it essential forthem to attend a particular school andthe difficulties that would be caused bythem attending an alternative school.

If evidence is received after the closingdate, it will not be taken into accountuntil after places have been offered on1 March 2010.

STEP 7:Being offereda placeOn 1 March 2010 Wandsworth Council(or your local council if you do not livein Wandsworth) will post a letter to youwith the outcome of your application forall the schools you listed on the form. You should receive this on 2 March. from the morning of 2 March, but youwill also get a letter with full details.

You will be offered a place at nomore than one of the schools youapplied for.

The place offered will be at whicheverof the schools is able to allocate yourchild a place using the publishedadmission criteria.

If more than one of the schools is ableto allocate your child a place, you will

be offered whichever one of these yousaid you would most prefer on yourapplication form.

If none of the schools you applied foris able to offer a place, you will beoffered a place at the nearestWandsworth school to your homewhich has a place available at thattime. This is only likely to happen if you applied for too few schools or didnot include any near to your home.

Please be aware that your childsdetails will be sent to the offeredschool and the school may contact youwith details of their admissionarrangements.

Your child can stay on the waiting listfor any school which you put higherin your order of preference than theschool at which you have been offereda place. If a place becomes availablelater, you will be given the opportunityto accept that instead.

The letter you receive will alsotell you: How to appeal against not being

offered a place at any of the schoolsyou applied for and the date by whichyou must do this.

How to make a late application forschools that have, or are likely to haveplaces available. Late applicationsmust be made to the borough inwhose area you live.

How waiting lists operateWandsworth Council will maintain thewaiting lists for each Wandsworthschool. Applicants not offered a place ata school which they listed as a higherpreference than the school which theyhave been offered, are automaticallyplaced on a waiting list in the order of the schools admission criteria. For someschools there will be a separate waitinglist for each type of place or ability band.

Places are allocated to children at the

top of the waiting list as vacancies arise.Late applications are also inserted intothe waiting list in criteria order. Thismeans that a childs position on the listcan move down as well as up.

Applicants can remain on the waitinglist for at least one term fromSeptember 2010.

STEP 8:Deciding whetherto appealYou have a legal right to appeal againstnot being offered a place at a school youapplied for. You can appeal for more thanone school if you wish.

If you want to appeal, contact theWandsworth Education AppealsService ((020) 8871 7554) for schoolsin Wandsworth (except Saint Cecilias,

CE Wandsworth, which you mustcontact directly). For schools in otherboroughs, contact the local council orthe school.

You must send in your appeal within10 school days of the date of thecouncils letter telling you that yourchild was not offered a place, unlessyou are given a later date.

Your appeal will be heard by anindependent panel of people who

have no connection with the schoolwhich you wish your child to attend. You will be told the date of thehearing and invited to attend.

When considering whether or not toappeal, you need to think aboutwhether your reasons for wanting yourchild to attend the school are likely tostand out from those put forward byother parents. If not, the likelihood of an appeal being successful may notbe very high.

To help you, the number of appealsheard and the number which weresuccessful last year are given for eachWandsworth school on pages 16-37 of this booklet.

Please note that the panel will onlyconsider your reasons for wanting aplace at that particular school. Theyshould not be influenced by whetheror not you have a place at any otherschool. If you decide to appeal, youmust still accept a place in anotherschool in case your appeal is notsuccessful. Do not leave it until afteryour appeal has been heard, as therewill be fewer places available by then.

    Frequently asked questions

1 Does the law guarantee my child aplace in the school of my choice?

No. The law says that parents mayexpress a preference for any school. However, if more parents expressa preference for a school than thenumber of places available, there hasto be an order of priority to decidewhich children to admit. The lawallows parents to appeal to anindependent panel if their child isrefused a place at a school of theirpreference.

    2. Does the co-ordinated systemmean that I have more chanceof getting a place at my firstpreference school?

No. The aim of the co-ordinatedsystem is to ensure that nobody getsmore than one offer from amongst theschools they applied for, so that morepeople will get the offer of a schoolplace.

This does not mean that there will bemore places available at anyparticular school than previously.Schools can only admit as manypupils as they can accommodate. The places will still be allocated tothose who have the highest priorityunder the schools publishedadmission criteria.

It is therefore important that you readthe admission criteria carefully so thatyou do not waste your preferences byonly listing schools where your child isunlikely to get a place.

    3. Do I have to use all 6 preferences?

No. However, unless you are certain of getting a place in a particular school, you are strongly advised to apply foras many schools as you can. Pleasebear in mind that your 6 preferencescan be for state schools in any area.

If you apply for one or two schoolsonly, it does not improve your chancesof being offered a place. If your

application is unsuccessful, you willbe offered a place at the nearestschool to your home which has aplace after applications have been

processed on 1 March. Thealternative schools you could haveapplied for may already be full by thistime, so you are advised to includethem on your form now.

    4. Can I change my preferences or theorder of my preferences after theapplication closing date?

If you add or change preferences afterthe application closing date thechanges will be considered to be alate application unless there areexceptional reasons why the changes

were not included on the originalapplication form. Late applications arenot considered until after the initialoffer of places on 1 March.

    5. Will a school know where I listed itin my order of preferences?

No. They will decide whether your childqualifies for a place using theirpublished admission criteria alone.

    6. Will I get priority for a school in theborough where I live?

No. The law does not allow localcouncils to give priority for places inschools in their area to children wholive in their area.

    7. How important is distance fromhome to school?

Distance from home to school is usedby many schools to decide whichchildren qualify for a place. Unlessyour child qualifies for a selective orspecialist place or meets religious

criteria for a church school, they aremore likely to be offered a place in aschool closer to home than onefurther away. However this isnt alwaysthe case, especially if the nearbyschool is particularly popular.

For Wandsworth schools, distancefrom home to school is measuredusing the shortest walking route alonglit roads or paths using the councilsGeographical Information System. The furthest distance that places

were offered under this criterion inthe previous year is given on pages16-37.

    8. Is my child guaranteed a placein one of the schools I haveapplied for?

No. However, if you read theadmission criteria and see how theplaces were allocated last year, it willgive you a better idea of whether theschool is likely to offer your child aplace. The more schools you applyfor at which your child has a realisticchance of a place, the more likely itwill be that you will be offered aplace.

    9. What can I do if I am not offered aplace in a school of my preference?

Your child can remain on the waitinglist for any school. Waiting lists areheld in the order of the admissioncriteria, irrespective of when theapplication was made.

This means that later applicationscan sometimes be placed abovethose received before the originalclosing date. You also have the rightto appeal against the decision not tooffer a place at any school.

    10. Is it possible that my child will bewithout a school place on 1 March?

No. If none of the schools youapplied for is able to offer a place, you will be offered a place at thenearest Wandsworth school to yourhome that has a place available atthat time.

You will also be given details of otherschools with places available andhow to apply for a place at theseschools.

Please be aware that your childsdetails will be sent to the offeredschool and the school may contactyou with details of their admissionarrangements.

    3. Students living nearest to the Academy using the shortest walking route with street lightingfrom the childs home to the Academy, as measured by the Wandsworth CouncilGeographical Information System.

Where there are insufficient applicants remaining to fill the available places within any band, places will be allocated alternately from adjacent bands.

    * Where the number of places remaining is not equally divisible by five, an additional place willbe allocated in one or more bands.
