WANIC Summer Semester

July 1 – July 19, 2019

Monday-Friday (no school July 4-5)

8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

WANIC offers summer courses at various high schools in local school districts.

These programs are open to high school students entering grades 9 through 12.

Students must be registered in a public high school in one of these school districts:

Bellevue

Everett

Issaquah

Lake Washington

Mercer Island

Northshore

Riverview

Snoqualmie Valley

Tuition is free. There is a $50 class supply fee; assistance is available for students who qualify for free/reduced

lunch.

This one semester class is worth 0.5 high school credits. Credits and grade earned will be posted to the student’s

permanent high school transcript.

Students provide their own transportation and lunch.

2D Video Game Design @ Cedarcrest HS/Duvall Cedarcrest High School (8:00-3:00) Use GameMaker software to develop a 2D video game. Learn game design, programming, art and animation, and audio editing to create your own game! Get feedback from industry professionals and publish your game to the web. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

Biosystems, Genetic Research & Ethics WANIC (8:00-3:00) Formerly "Dynamic DNA". Have you ever wanted to work in a research lab and run your own science experiments? Discover the world of genetic research as you explore the workings of mutant genes, bacteria, and DNA sequencing. Includes a visit to Institute for Systems Biology! This class is open to rising 10th, 11th, and 12th graders only. Rising 9th graders will not be enrolled. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

Biotechnology (Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources) @ Cascade HS/Everett Cascade High School (8:00-3:00) Students participating in Biotechnology: Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources will experience hands-on activities, projects, and problems solved with biotechnology. Students do not need to have a prior biotech course. Gel electrophoresis, PCR, bacterial transformation, microbe culturing and plant propagation techniques will be used. Topics will include: Developing alternative fuels Identification of GMO crops Food processing and bacteriology Understanding biotechnology companies and ethics Preservation of natural resources. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

Computer Aided Design (CAD) & 3D Printing @ Cascade HS/Everett Cascade High School (8:00-3:00) This Computer Aided Design (CAD) course is appropriate for high school students interested in design, engineering and manufacturing. Students will be introduced to the design process, research and analysis, engineering standards and technical documentation. Students will design solutions to real-world problems while using the use of the most current 3D solid-modeling software and state-of-the-art 3D printers. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

Computer Science & Engineering Redmond High School (8:00-3:00) Project-based learning: electronic components, Robotics, and C language programming. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

Computer Science Intro @ BHS Bothell High School (8:00-3:00) This introductory course offers hands on opportunities to experience how computer science is used every day. The focus will be on big ideas in computing such as abstraction, design, and simulation. No prior computer science experience necessary. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

Computer Science Intro @ IHS Issaquah High School (8:00-3:00) This introductory course is focused on teaching the principles, logic, and big ideas that are key to understanding how most programming languages work. Students will create many programs in Snap (very similar to Scratch) in order to explore these concepts. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

Culinary Creations Bothell High School (8:00-3:00) This is a fast-paced, hands-on cooking class in a kitchen lab environment. Students will learn and practice essential cooking techniques, methods, measuring skills, recipe reading, knife skills, and safety. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

DigiPen 3D Modeling Redmond High School (8:00-3:00) This class introduces students to the fundamentals of 3D modeling. Students will learn tools and techniques used to create the 3D models that are being integrated into more industries every year. Through a series of guided lessons and student led projects, students will learn how artistic principles apply to 3D modeling. In addition, students will learn how to texture (color) their models and how their creations can be used in different contexts such as video game engines, advertising, film, and 3D printing. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

DigiPen Art & Animation Intro Cascade High School (8:00-3:00) Redmond High School (8:00-3:00) DigiPen Art & Animation Intro Through a variety of hands-on projects, students are exposed to the tools and techniques of professional artists while creating their own 2D animations. This course focuses on traditional art and animation methods and techniques with an emphasis on strengthening foundational art skills. Art topics covered include perspective, line, form, value, design, and drawing from both observation and imagination. Animation principles are taught with a variety of methods with later animation projects being completed in a hand drawn style. For those who are serious about learning about art, this is the place for you. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

DigiPen Music & Sound Design Intro Redmond High School (8:00-3:00) This class offers a fascinating, hands-on approach to creating music, sound effects, and soundtracks for games or animations. Students produce unique, engaging soundscapes while learning about the fundamentals of music and sound design and their use in the video game and animation industries. Musical background is not required but is helpful. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

Digipen Video Game Development Redmond High School (8:00-3:00) This workshop is ideal for any student who wants to take an idea for a 2D video game and make it a reality. This workshop examines basic programming techniques, but also looks at other disciplines needed to create a game including game design, art production, and sound design. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

DigiPen Video Game Programming Intro Cascade High School (8:00-3:00) Redmond High School (8:00-3:00) DigiPen Video Game Programming Intro This class launches you into the world of computer programming through the practice of writing code for video games. The emphasis of this class is learning the foundational programming concepts that form the basis of video games and other programs including variables, conditional statements, and loops. The class will also cover object oriented game programming concepts like component based engines, coding gameplay, and collaborating with other programmers. You are also introduced to concepts in physics and math such as 2D coordinate systems, vector math and trigonometry. By the completion of this course students will have a basic understanding of programming logic and as it pertains to video game programming. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

DigiPen World Building Redmond High School (8:00-3:00) World Building What do Bilbo Baggins, Harry Potter, and Percy Jackson have in common? They live in complete worlds filled with rich detail about their respective geographies, cultures, economies, and bestiaries. Building these worlds is an essential element of game design, art, writing, and filmmaking. In Worldbuilding, your student will create a complete setting that could be the basis of a future novel, film, or game. We will research real and fantastical worlds that your student can use to create a unique setting of their own. Activities include: • Design fantasy maps that create a wealth of narrative opportunities. • Create fictional cultures based on real-world examples. • Build fantastic, but believable, villages, cities, and whole nations! High School credit: 0.5 CTE

Digital Forensics @ Cascade HS/Everett Cascade High School (8:00-3:00) This course presents an overview of the principles and practices of digital investigation. Students will learn different techniques and procedures that enable them to perform a digital investigation. It covers the major phases of digital investigation such as preservation, analysis and acquisition of artifacts that reside in hard disks and random access memory. Upon completion of the course, students can apply forensics tools to perform digital investigation and understand the underlying theory behind these tools. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

Entrepreneurship @ Cascade HS/Everett Cascade High School (8:00-3:00) Do you want to own your own business someday? Here is a great place to start. This entrepreneurship course is for high school students who are interested in learning about owning and operating a business and will provide them with an opportunity to create a complete business plan. Key business, marketing and financial concepts are learned through direct instruction, a variety of projects as well as through a virtual business simulation. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

Fire & EMS Careers Intro WANIC (8:00-3:00) Experience the exciting and high-demand world of fire-fighters and emergency responders. Learn about fire prevention, inspection, investigation, alarm systems, dispatching, and emergency medical services. Earn your CPR/First Aid card! High School credit: 0.5 CTE

Health @ Cascade HS/Everett Cascade High School (8:00-3:00) Redmond High School (8:00-3:00) Learn about personal, family & community health issues. Meets health credit graduation requirement. High School credit: 0.5 Health

Health First Aid/CPR Bothell High School (8:00-3:00) This introductory course into Health Careers covers cardiovascular systems, anatomy & physiology, vital signs, skeletal system, disease prevention, and health maintenance. All students will complete CPR and First Aid training and certification. Meets health credit graduation requirement. High School credit: 0.5 Health

Healthcare Careers Intro (Dental, Medical and Nursing) WANIC (8:00-3:00) Do you like to help others? Would you like to explore healthcare careers like Dental, Medical, and Nursing? This

interactive class will give you an inside look at all three of these high demand fields. Earn your CPR/First Aid card!

High School credit: 0.5 CTE

Human Body & Behaviors @ Cascade HS/Everett Cascade High School (8:00-3:00) Can you spot a liar? In this class we’ll learn all about the human body & behavior. We’ll study the brain and nervous system, how the body responds to stress, emotions, optical illusions, & how to improve your memory. This will be a great class for those interested in human biology and its connection to psychology. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

IT Academy @ Cedarcrest HS/Duvall Cedarcrest High School (8:00-3:00) Students will learn the basics of Microsoft Word 2016 while developing employable skills necessary to thrive in their high school careers and beyond. Word competencies include customizing document views, formatting a document and using citation reference tools. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

Personal Finance @ Cedarcrest HS/Duvall Cedarcrest High School (8:00-3:00) This course will empower, equip, and entertain while building confidence in students own financial decision-making. Students are facing tremendous financial challenges without the basic knowledge needed to thrive in today’s economy. Fewer than half of high school seniors qualify as financially literate, and more than 7 million borrowers are in default on student loans for college. Learn the skills to navigate the day to day reality of personal finance. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

Photography Issaquah High School (8:00-3:00) This summer class will feature photographic opportunities covering both digital and darkroom techniques. Explore the technical and creative aspects of photography. Master your camera and its functions. Improve your composition. Process your images so that they look their very best. Students do not need a camera, just bring enthusiasm. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

Sustainable Green Design Redmond High School (8:00-3:00) Provides a hands-on exploration of green and sustainable concepts that are a large part of the working world of the 21st century. Topics explored may include defining sustainability, design of green buildings, auditing sustainable workplaces, solar and wind energy production, sustainable transportation, and green ecosystems. Hands-on activities and projects focus on engineering, design, and applications of science. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

Welding Woodinville High School (8:00-3:00) Want to get in the shop for some real hands on learning? Come join us to create projects big or small, with the use of a

variety of welding techniques on different types of metals. This course is for all levels of welders from novice to

experienced. High School credit: 0.5 CTE

SUMMER SEMESTER STUDENT

RULES AND REGULATIONS

The intent of the WANIC Summer Semester is to provide a pleasant learning experience for all students and to enhance their skills, knowledge, and academic abilities. Students enrolled in the Summer Semester are expected to behave appropriately. Students and parents should read and understand the Rules and Regulations below. The cooperation of each student in the following rules will aid in ensuring a good learning experience for all students this summer.

SCHEDULE: Weekdays July 1 through July 19 (no classes July 4 and 5). Classes run 8:00 am - 3:00 pm.

GRADE/CREDIT: The 13 full school days of Summer Semester is equivalent to a high school semester (0.5 credit). Each day of the summer class is equivalent to 6.5 days of a regular high school class. This class will be listed on the student’s official high school transcript along with the credit and grade earned (which will affect GPA). This is state law and is not optional.

ATTENDANCE: Punctual and complete attendance each day is essential. Students are expected to be in class on the first through to the last day of Summer Semester. Missed class time may not be able to be made up and any missed work may lead to a poor or failing grade. Teachers are not expected to use class time to review any part of the lesson missed. If it is unavoidable that a student is absent, tardy, or needs to leave early, the parent/guardian must phone the WANIC office (425) 739-8400 or email [email protected].

SCHOOL GROUNDS: Students are expected to remain in the Summer Semester areas of the building and grounds only. OFF LIMITS AREAS include, but are not limited to: All parking areas except the front parking lot, all wooded areas, all athletic fields, and other areas of the building that are not being used for Summer Semester.

PARKING: Student parking is available. Heed all posted signs. Students are expected to drive in a responsible and safe manner. Parking privileges may be revoked for unsafe driving on campus. Students must plan to be in class on time despite parking concerns: parking will not be considered an excuse for being tardy.

PERSONAL ITEMS AND VALUABLES: Personal items such as cell phones, electronic devices, large sums of money, and other valuables are not permitted during Summer Semester class time. Students may not use cell phones or other personal electronic devices during class time; items will be confiscated. Summer Semester is not responsible for the loss of items.

DISCIPLINE: All school district rules and expectations apply as well as several major principles consistent with your home high school policies: (1) Respect school and private property, (2) Respect other people – students, teachers, and other staff, (3) Dress appropriately for classes, (4) Do what is expected – do it the best you can, (5) Everyone is responsible to support the learning and safety of others. No written rules and regulations can possibly cover all situations. WANIC reserves the right to practice reasonable discretion regarding discipline if necessary, on a case by case basis. All policies and procedures of the WANIC Skill Center for student conduct and discipline will be in effect. If a student is removed from Summer Semester as a result of disciplinary action, the student will not earn credit and fees will not be reimbursed.

Computer and Internet Code of Conduct Protect your account and computing privileges. Never share your logon and password information with other students. Never use

others’ logon or password.

Do not destroy, modify or abuse computer hardware or software in any way.

Do not delete or add software or peripheral equipment to district computers without advance permission.

Do not use personal wireless hotspot devices while at school.

Do not utilize peripheral devices that act as computers or local area networks such as thumb drives with processing capability.

Do not attempt to tunnel or VPN to another computer through the District network.

Do not use USB to run executable (.exe) files.

Do not use district provided storage for games, executable files or inappropriate content.

Do not use the district’s network resources on personal devices such as smart phones or personal computers without advance permission.

Keep food and beverages away from laptops and desktops at all times.

Use district computers for educational purposes only. No personal, commercial or political activity is allowed.

Do not use district computers for illegal, harassing, vandalizing, inappropriate or indecent purposes.

Students should leave games, other non-district software, entertainment, and social networking at home.

Do not use the Internet to access or process pornographic or otherwise inappropriate material.

Be ethical and courteous. Do not send hate, harassing, or obscene mail; text or images; libelous, scandalous or discriminatory remarks; or demonstrate other antisocial behaviors. Such communications may be subject to school discipline, legal action, and/or police contact.

District computers may not be used to interfere or disrupt other users, services or equipment, including distribution of unsolicited advertising (spam), propagation of viruses, or distribution of large quantities of information (chain letters, network games or broadcasting messages).

Do not attempt to hide “windows,” close laptop lids, clear desktops, delete internet search history, or turn off computers when staff approach.

Never attempt to “hack” into another student’s or staff member’s account.

Do not attempt to circumvent or disrupt district network and software resources such as firewalls, network traffic monitoring services, or web filters.

Do not assume that because something is on the Internet that you can copy it.

As a condition of connecting personal equipment to the district's networks, the district reserves the right to gain access to the device for analysis to resolve any identified issues or threats.

Parent/Guardian Permission for Photographing Students Periodically, students are photographed by school district staff, program staff, and/or the media. These photos may be used online or in print materials related to WANIC communications. In order to assure students’ rights to privacy, please check one:
