Budding scribes honing skills at NU-Q Fazeena Saleem The Peninsula

The new campus building of Northwestern Univer-sity in Qatar (NU-Q), situated at the Education City is arguably the larg-

est and most technologically advanced media school in the world. It combines contemporary design with its cutting-edge technology in an environmentally-friendly facility, says Everette E Dennis (pictured), Dean and CEO of NU-Q.

The campus was designed by dis-tinguished American architect Antoine Predock. Predock travelled around the world, deriving inspira-tion from ‘desert structures’ to give NU-Q’s new building a look and feel appropriate to Qatar’s culture, cli-mate, and location.

NU-Q is a journalism and com-munication school, and one of six American branch campuses operat-ing in Qatar Foundation’s Education City.

More than 240 students and fac-ulty recently began their winter semester at this new building.

Speaking to The Peninsula’s Doha Today, Everette E Dennis shared the uniqueness of the new building, aca-demic and research programmes being offered at the campus and its contribution to the society.

Q: What types of programs you offer at NU-Q, and any plans to introduce new programs/

courses in the near future?

A: NU-Q is a modern media and communication school, with a diverse student body of 248, repre-senting 32 different nationalities. The branch campus was established in partnership with Qatar Foundation in 2008 to offer two undergraduate programmes in communication and journalism, with a foundation in the liberal arts.

Founded in 2008 in partnership with Qatar Foundation, NU-Q pro-vides its students the opportunity to explore the world and, ultimately, shape its future through its distin-guished schools of communication, journalism, and liberal arts.

NU-Q was established by visionary leaders at Qatar Foundation and Northwestern University in Evanston, who recognised the need for a state-of-the-art media school in the region. Since its founding, it has been recognised for its exceptional educational offerings, facilities, and

high calibre students. Our faculty members come from academia and industry and bring with them a wealth of theoretical and practical knowledge.

We offer a variety of courses in media, communication, and liberal arts. We also offer many opportuni-ties for students to engage in research projects, service learning trips, exchange programs, internships, res-idencies, and first-hand meetings with industry professionals.

In the near future, we are work-ing on developing a master’s programme, as well as community courses within the field. Our home campus in Evanston, Illinois has recently been ranked as number 12 in the United States by US News and World Report and in the top 20 uni-versities worldwide by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Q: Are there any plans to introduce graduate programs?

A: Yes –we are considering a

master’s in media industries and, in collaboration with HBKU, a master’s in health communication. Also, a master’s in sports media manage-ment and communication is being designed and proposed in collabo-ration with our home campus in the United States.

Q: How many NU-Q graduates are there to date?

A: Since our establishment in 2008, we have graduated five classes and now have more than 200 alumni who are excelling in the local media outlets including, Al Jazeera English and Arabic, Al Arabiya, beIN Sports, The Film House, Qatar Foundation and Weber Shandwick. Many serve in communication roles within all manners of organisations, including sports. Meanwhile, close to 35 percent of our alumni are pursuing graduate studies in top graduate schools including Harvard University, London School of Economics, McGill University, Northwestern, Cambridge, and Oxford.

Q: What is the ratio between Qatari and non-Qatari students?

A: Nearly half of our student body is Qatari; the remaining stu-dents come from more than 30 other nationalities.

Q: Provide us with an insight on the research taking place at NU-Q? What areas are being researched and what does research mean to NU-Q?

A: Faculty and students at NU-Q engage in pioneering research about the news and media indus-tries in the MENA countries; media use among of women and young audiences, media effects on national identity, journalistic prac-tices, mobile media, digital literacy and more. Building on the research tradition of the Northwestern Uni-versity home campus in the United States, which is one of America’s leading private research universi-ties, our research topics include Middle East media, communication, gender, youth media, media and democracy, and other topics.

Each year, Northwestern Uni-versity in Qatar conducts an annual region-wide survey of media use patterns, content preferences, and attitudes toward issues such as cen-sorship, freedom of speech, and cultural preservation. This is part of the World Internet Project. Last year, also published a wide-rang-ing study of media industries in the MENA region including film, tele-vision, music, digital media, newspapers, advertising, and more.

Our students have not only been involved in numerous faculty studies but have increasingly become interested in pursuing research projects of their own, mentored by our faculty.

Q: Do you train your stu-dents in Qatari media outlets?

A: Our students are encouraged to take on internships while stud-ying to gain a better understanding of the career prospects available to them. Our journalism and strategic communications students are also required to complete a residency program during their third year in media companies around the globe. Our students have worked with USA Today, Huffington Post, Film House, Resolution Films, Ginger Camel Blue Rubicon, Euronews, Al Jazeera Stream, Grayling and many other esteemed organizations.

Q: How unique is NU-Q’s new building and the types of facilities it includes.

The building, designed by the internationally renowned architect, Antoine Predock, is arguably the largest and most technologically advanced media school in the world. It combines contemporary design with its cutting-edge technology in an environmentally-friendly facility.

The structure, which is more than 500,000 square feet, is inspired by the region’s desert land-scape and embodies subtle elements that express Qatari

culture, climate, and location. It was recently awarded a LEED Gold cer-tification, which is a mark of quality and achievement in environmen-tally-friendly construction.

Features of the building include, three video production studios, two 150-person lecture halls,

world-class multimedia newsroom, two-story research library, in-house digital museum, the Media Majlis at NU-Q, Black Box theater, multiple control rooms, multiple editing rooms, an auditorium, a large outdoor LED screen, Saif Tip and a three-story media hall.

Nourish your hair with a warm oil massage, explore the good-ness of butea gum tree and more to have thick and strong tresses, says an expert. Ashok, Research Scientist at The

Himalaya Drug Company, suggests how:P A warm oil massage can be the best remedy to provide your hair

with the required amount of nourishment. The massage can not only relieve you of your pent-up stress but also accelerate blood circulation on the scalp, thus reducing the possibility of hair loss.

P Hair dryers and straighteners can adversely affect the health of your hair as the heat can weaken the roots and impact the hair proteins. While an occasional styling stint might be the need of the hour for important occasions, it is advisable to refrain from using dryers on a regular basis.

P Also known as the ‘flame of the forest’, the butea gum tree has astringent properties and is especially useful in scalp treatments. Use an anti-hair loss cream with butea in it and experience the decreased hair fall.

P A good hair wash is always refreshing, but applying chemicals and compounds too often on your hair could also result in hair fall as the hair could lose its strength due to dryness. Use a herbal and mild shampoo, but use it sparingly to enjoy thick and lush hair.

Consuming a Mediterra-nean diet -- rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, high on healthy fats like olive oil

and low in refined sugars and sat-urated fats -- may provide a good nutritious balance that can improve medication adherence and mental health in patients with HIV-posi-tive and Type 2 diabetes, researchers suggest.

People who received healthy food and snacks for six months showed dramatic improvements in depression, the distress of having diabetes, diabetes self-manage-ment, trading off between food and healthcare and HIV medication adherence.

People with diabetes who ate the nutritious food showed better long-term control of their blood sugar, reduced hospitalisations or emergency department visits. They also consumed less sugar and lost weight. “We saw significant improvements in food security and in outcomes related to all three

mechanisms through which we posited that food insecurity may affect HIV and diabetes health -- nutritional, mental health and behavioural,” said Kartika Palar, Assistant Professor at University of

California - San Francisco (UCSF), US. The Mediterranean diet fulfilled 100 per cent of daily caloric requirements for people living with HIV and Type 2 diabetes. The patients also had fewer symptoms

of depression and were less likely to binge drink. For those with HIV, adherence to antiretroviral therapy increased from 47 to 70 per cent.

The study appeared online in the Journal of Urban Health.

People who are deprived of sleep regularly are likely to have a weak

immune system, a study has found.

The findings showed that chronic short sleep shuts down programmes involved in immune response of circulat-ing white blood cells. Seven or more hours of sleep is recom-mended for optimal health, thus the immune system functions best when it gets enough sleep, the researchers said.

“The results are consistent with studies that show when sleep deprived people are given

a vaccine, there is a lower anti-body response and if you expose sleep deprived people to a rhi-novirus they are more likely to get the virus,” said lead author Nathaniel Watson, University of Washington in Seattle.

For the study, published in the journal Sleep, the team took blood samples from 11 pairs of identical twins with different sleep patterns and discovered that the twin with shorter sleep duration had a depressed immune system, compared with his or her sibling.

They used identical twins for the studies.

FOOD SUNDAY 29 JANUARY 201710

Christy Brissette The Washington Post

In every country on the planet, men don’t live as long as women do. We’ve all come to accept this as a fact. After all, as my dad used to say, “It isn’t manly to go to the doc-tor.” This and many other gendered beliefs

affect men and women’s health habits, includ-ing the types of foods they choose to eat.

For example, we’re constantly bombarded with advertising and social messaging telling us that eating like a bird and dining on salad is fem-inine, while eating large portions and plenty of red meat is manly. These oversimplified repre-sentations of female and male eating habits may seem outdated, but research shows they persist for many of us.

These socially influenced eating patterns could in part help explain why men are at a higher risk of heart disease and some cancers. Are our ideas about masculinity and femininity negatively affecting our health?

This may not come as a surprise, but over-all, women have healthier eating habits than men. Research suggests this is mostly a learned response. Luke Zhu, assistant professor at the University of Manitoba, researches societal aspects that affect food decisions. Based on the research of his group and others, Zhu says in an email, “Unhealthy eating habits and foods (e.g. fries, nachos) are psychologically associated with masculinity while ‘healthy’ eating habits and foods (e.g. salad, organic food) are psychologi-cally associated with femininity.”

Joop de Boer is a retired social psychologist and guest researcher at VU University in Amsterdam.

“Energy-dense, spicy and strongly flavored foods are perceived as masculine foods,” de Boer says, “while soft and sweet foods are perceived as feminine foods.”

Do you like to drink with dinner? Do you have fruit or french fries with your lunch? Chances are, your answers could reveal your gender identity.

According to de Boer, markers of masculin-ity include eating a burger with fries for lunch, or having pizza and drink for dinner. Markers of femininity include eating pasta salad and fruit for lunch, or rice and vegetables with wine for dinner. The health implications of these choices are obvious: Overall, women are choosing foods

with more fiber and antioxidants, while men tend to overdo it on saturated fat and empty cal-ories. This may be because women are more likely to seek out health information and, as de Boer says, buy in to information on the health aspects of specific foods - for instance, “super foods.” De Boer suggests that men and women who see masculinity and femininity as less sep-arate and strictly defined aren’t as different in their meat preferences, while those with more traditional gender beliefs are more likely to eat more meat if they’re men or to choose more sugar-laden desserts if they’re women.

“Our work shows that traditional framings of masculinity, emphasizing that ‘real men’ eat [red] meat, are associated with the men’s preferences for large meat portions and almost no willing-ness to reduce,” de Boer says. For these men,

“eating large meat portions is a marker of mas-culinity, which reflects traditional, patriarchal notions of power and performance.”

This deep-set belief could pose a serious threat to men’s health, as research suggests that incorporating more plant-based proteins can improve health and lengthen one’s life.

Zhu’s research has found that regardless of gender, people make different food choices when the concept of masculinity or femininity is brought up. “When we made the idea of mascu-linity salient, people preferred less-healthy food. When we did so with femininity, people chose healthier food.” As a result, women tend to be more comfortable making the healthier choice.

Culture also affects gender roles and there-fore food choices. In recent research published in Appetite, de Boer and colleagues examined beliefs

about meat among young adults in the Nether-lands who were either second-generation Dutch, Chinese or Turkish. The second-generation Turk-ish adults expressed a stronger association between meat and masculinity, while the second-generation Dutch group held the weakest link between ideas of meat as masculine.

De Boer notes that people may try to man-age their gender identity via food choices that could be positive or negative. For example, an individual might make unhealthy eating choices in an attempt to be more masculine - a change in behaviour that could have serious health implications. The goal of learning about the affect of gender on eating habits and health is to make it easier to make healthy food choices. Gender can be a strategic factor for both sexes.

Zhu and de Boer agree that increasing our awareness of gender-framed foods and eating behaviors gives us the power to change them. Zhu also suggests that being more mindful when making food choices can help you focus on the food rather than on external factors. Ask your-self why you’re choosing a certain food. Is it peer pressure? Is it because it was advertised as a more masculine or feminine food? This aware-ness can help you make healthier food choices.

Individuals can re frame their behaviour to change any gendered preconceptions , says de Boer. For example, cooking at home isn’t mas-culine or feminine - it’s an essential skill for eating well and taking care of yourself. De Boer says,

“Men who cook and see this as a more feminine behaviour can give it a ‘masculine makeover’ by portraying themselves as gourmands who cook and clean and are efficient and urbane.”

How society pressures us to make gendered food choices

Film journalist and author Bha-wana Somaaya feels blessed and honoured to receive the

Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award, for her contribution in the field of Literature and Educa-tion - Journalism.

The veteran journalist said: “On Wednesday, around 12 p.m... I received a call from the ministry say-ing that they are honouring me with the Padma Shri award. I was so occupied writing my review that time, I thanked him and said that I am privileged to get that and discon-nected the phone. I didn’t think much about it.”

“After two hours when I came back home from the recording (for her radio show) and started receiv-ing messages and calls, I realised

what just happened. I feel humbled and honoured to receive the award. I take it as a blessing of my parents.”

She started her career as a film journalist in 1978 and worked with some of the leading newspapers. Somaaya was the editor of Screen magazine for seven years. So far, she has penned 13 books on the film his-tory of Indian cinema and biographies of film stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini and iconic singer Lata Mangeshkar.

Some of her popular books include “Salaam Bollywood: The Pain and the Passion”, “Amitabh Bachchan: The Legend”, “Hema Malini: The Authorized Biography” and “Once Upon A Time In India - A Century of Indian Cinema”.

A day after Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his crew were assaulted on the sets of his forthcoming directorial “Padma-

vati”, the filmmaker decided to cancel shooting in Jaipur, sources close to him said yesterday.

“He has packed up and has said he will never shoot again in Jaipur,” the sources added.

Sources said that Bhansali has decided to have sets in Mumbai and carry on shoot-ing there. According to reports, the team will be leaving for Mumbai from here later in the evening. On Friday activists of a Rajput organisation, Shree Rajput Karni Sena, pro-tested, misbehaved and manhandled the crew of Bhansali’s upcoming film “Padmavati”, police and eyewitnesses said.

They also damaged some cameras and other equipment, forcing Bhansali to stop shooting.

“We had earlier requested him (Bhansali) to show us the script which he did not do. We are against distorting of historical facts and we know that he has distorted historical facts,” Vivek Singh of Karni Sena told IANS.

“Padmavati” tells the story of Alauddin

Khilji, the medieval-era Delhi ruler, who fell in love with Rajput queen Padmavati. Actors Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Sha-hid Kapoor star in the film.

Bhansali was shooting some portions of “Padmavati” in Jaigarh Fort on Friday when at around 12 p.m. some activists of Karni Sena gathered there and started to protest. They even manhandled and misbehaved with Bhansali and his crew members. There was a complete chaos for some time and Bhansali had to stop shooting. Police had a tough time in controlling the situation.

“He (Bhansali) is distorting history and we will not allow them to do so,” Lokendra Singh Kalvi, a senior leader of Karni Sena told a press conference here on Saturday.

The shooting of filmmaker Chakri Toleti’s Tamil invasion thriller “Kolayuthir Kaalam” commenced here on Saturday

and actress Nayanthara has joined the sets.YSR Films, one of the producers of the film,

tweeted on Saturday: “Our production no 1 ‘Kolayuthir Kaalam’ shooting started in Lon-don. Stay tuned for exclusive updates.”

The film is loosely based on English indie hit “Hush” - a story of a deaf and mute author who is struggling to complete the climax of her latest novel when she falls prey to a psycho killer. Nayanthara, too, plays a deaf and mute character.

However, it is not known whether she is playing an author or not. The first look poster of the film was released in December last year when the project was officially announced.

Yuvan Shankar Raja has been roped in to compose the music. He will co-produce the film with Vashu Bhagnani and Deepshikha Deshmukh.

will go on sale from March 14, 50 years since the Londoner released his first album and in the year that he would have turned 70. Six of the stamps bear images of album covers for “Hunky Dory”, “Aladdin Sane”, “Heroes”, “Let’s Dance”, “Earthling” and “Blackstar”, which was released just days before Bowie’s death at the age of 69 from can-cer in January 2016. The other four stamps show the pop chameleon on tour over the years, with pictures of him performing during the Ziggy Stardust tour in 1972, the Stage tour in 1978, the Serious Moonlight tour in 1983 and A Reality tour in 2004.

The star of Iran’s Oscar-nominated movie

“The Salesman” said that she would not attend the Academy Awards cere-mony in Hollywood next month because of US Pres-ident Donald Trump’s proposed ban on immi-grants from Muslim nations.

Taraneh Alidoosti (pic-tured), 33, a Tehran-born actress, said the move was racist.

“Trump’s visa ban for Iranians is racist. Whether this will include a cultural event or not, I won’t attend the #AcademyAwards 2017 in protest,” Alidoosti said on Twitter.

Luis Singson, a larger-than-life Filipino tycoon who has brought the Miss Universe

pageant to Manila, has much in common with the man who owned the franchise two years ago: US President Donald J Trump.

Both men are immensely wealthy and are immersed in pol-itics. Both have a cologne named after them. And, in their own coun-tries, both are synonymous with a globally televised beauty contest that has often been buffeted by pol-itics. Singson, a provincial police chief who survived bloody gunbat-tles in a family feud and then became a governor, however says he doesn’t see himself as a Trump in the making.

“We’re very different,” Singson said in an interview at his Manila mansion, its walls hung with pho-tos of him posing with wild animals he has hunted and killed. “I’m going to give away my money. I don’t think Trump can do that.”

Singson’s LCS Group of Companies said it has paid $13 million in a one-off deal to bring Miss Universe to the Philippines, where the contest will be held on Monday morning to cater to Sunday

night TV audiences in the West. It will be carried on the Fox network in the United States. Singson, long-time governor of the northern Philippine province of Ilocos Sur before handing over to his son in

2013, amassed a fortune through agriculture, mining and transport. He hopes the beauty pageant will boost tourism and banish ugly headlines about his country’s bloody war on drugs.

After learning to use a laser engraving machine in a Vietnam-ese engineering school, Nguyen Van Minh is

now putting the technology to an unexpected use: Decorating fruit.

It is a modern twist on the tra-ditional custom of hand-carving designs into watermelons on the occasion of the lunar new year, a holiday known as Tet in Vietnam that kicks off on every January 28.

“Laser carving is more accurate and better for small patterns. Plus, the designs are more diverse,” the 27-year-old entrepreneur said as a laser beam rapidly etched an elab-orate rooster design into the green rind of a bowling ball-sized melon.

From giant pomelos to gold-dusted coconuts, Vietnam’s markets fill up with an array of novelty fruits ahead of Tet.

The designer produce is often gifted to colleagues and relatives, or kept at home as decorations. Minh’s Hanoi-based company is now churning out scores of

decorated and polished melons at a fraction of the speed that it takes

traditional carvers to chisel away at the fruit’s peel by hand.

Questioning the decision-making ability of driverless cars, experts

have suggested model driverless car regulations to ensure safety of the passengers.

Artificial intelligence (AI) experts David Danks and Alex John London from Carnegie Mel-lon University in the US argued that current safety regulations do not plan for autonomous sys-tems and are ill-equipped to ensure that these systems would perform safely and reliably.

“Currently, we ensure safety on the roads by regulating the per-formance of the various mechanical systems of vehicles and by licensing drivers. When cars drive themselves we have no comparable system for eval-uating the safety and reliability of their autonomous driving sys-tems,” said London.

This would provide informa-tion about how the autonomous system makes decisions in a wide range of contexts, so that we can understand how they might act in future in new situ-ations, the duo said.
