We have a positive and proactive approach tovolunteering in line with the Cheshire Fire and RescueService vision, of “no deaths, injuries and damage fromfires and other emergencies”. Our volunteers really domake a difference to the communities they live in,through informative, educational and practical help.

By volunteering you not only help communitiesthroughout Cheshire, but also improve your CV, meetlikeminded people, boost your confidence and improveyour communication skills.

This booklet provides an overview of the volunteer rolesavailable to you.

You can choose a volunteer opportunity that suits yourexisting skills and time commitments, however, we aremore than happy for you to volunteer for various rolesif you wish to do so.

Fire Cadet SchemeVolunteer Cadet Staff - Requires a DBS checkAvailability of this service is: an evening per week, 6pm - 9pmwith the possibility of weekend and holiday events

A typical cadet unit hosts 50/50 boys and girls aged 12 – 17 years ofage from varied and diverse backgrounds and consists of up to 20cadets and 4 cadet staff.

As cadet staff you will support the scheme in providing the cadetswith an insight into working within a uniformed service as well asencouraging them to develop personally, socially and with selfdiscipline.

In a team environment, cadet staff promote physical, mental andemotional wellbeing by organising structured activities whichdevelop cadets to take informed decisions regarding their futurecareer and life opportunities.

The commitment to attend the weekly drill night at a designatedstation and on a regular basis, is vital to this role. We do have roleswithin the cadet scheme that do not require involvement with drillyard activities, if you feel you are able to offer skills such asadministration, events and activity support please do get in touch.

The duration of the drill night is normally 3 hours and will take placeon the same evening each week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday orThursday dependent on station).

Safety CentralVolunteer Ranger - Requires a DBS checkAvailability of this service is 9am - 5pm Monday - Friday,Summer/ Winter

Safety Central is an interactive lifeskills education centre opening in2017 as part of Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service’s work to keep ourcommunity safe. The ground-breaking new centre houses fourimmersive learning zones and activity space which will be used toeducate visitors about staying safe, keeping healthy and beinghappy.

We need volunteer Rangers, who will guide people of all ages aroundthe centre, running simple activities that enable them to think abouthow they can avoid coming to harm in a range of life-like situations

Duties will include:

• Greeting and welcoming visitors, who will range from primaryschool children to older adults

• Escorting visitors around the centre, delivering and reinforcingkey safety messages

• Answering questions from the visitors during the tour

• Assisting with set up and set down of activity equipment ifnecessary

Post Fire Support Team (PFST)Post Fire Support Team Volunteer - Requires a DBS checkAvailability of this service is: 24/7 rota, Summer & Winter

The Post Fire Support Team help people cope in the aftermath of aminor domestic emergency, providing practical help, advice andsupport.

PFST work in teams of two or three and are based out of HQ inWinsford, where the bespoke vehicle is housed.

The team will attend minor domestic incidents on the request of theOfficer in Charge to listen, support and advise individuals andfamilies of fire safety, clean the affected area, remove excess waterand ensure that the occupants are able to continue to utilise theaffected area safely.

Heritage TeamHistorical Society - Requires a DBS checkAvailability of this service is:Summer - Weekends 6am - 6pmWinter - Monday - Friday sporadic events

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service are proud to have a fleet of vintagefire appliances including an 1870’s Shand Mason steamer, fourpumps dating from 1938 - 1955 along with an original horse drawnmanual pump and a V8 Safari Land Rover.

As a Heritage Team volunteer you get to drive and display all of thesemachines

(dependent on licence limitations), you don’t necessarily have tohold an LGV licence although it would be great if you have one.Other duties include maintenance, polishing (there’s lots of brass)and restoration. We do all this to conserve these vehicles for futuregenerations to enjoy.

The heritage team and vehicles represent Cheshire Fire and RescueService in promotional campaigns and have appeared in televisiondrama productions such as BBC’s WPC 56 and ITV’s Grantchester.Volunteer uniform is provided along with travel expenses.

Fire Bike RiderRider EngagementAvailability of this service is: Summer - Weekends 8am - 6pm,Winter - Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm, Evening Programmes 6pm -10pm

The fire bike team consists of 8 experienced and trained motorcycleriders. Their role is to engage with motorcycle and scooter ridersthroughout Cheshire. The riders deliver road safety messages,specifically for these vehicles, discuss the importance of correctclothing and promote enhanced rider courses.

Biker downBiker Down is a rider skills – rider response course that is for bikersdelivered by bikers. The course consists of four parts and is deliveredby the fire bike riders in partnership with Merseyside RoADAR(RoSPA)

Events TeamEvent Team Volunteer - Requires a DBS checkAvailability of this service is: Monday - Sunday 7.30am - 7pm

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service attends a range of shows, fairs andother events throughout the year to promote important safetymessages and engage with communities about its plans. The supportof volunteers who enjoy talking to members of the public as well asbeing willing and able to drive and set up one of our exhibitionvehicles is crucial.

This is varied and exciting role which could see you guiding groupsthrough our interactive kitchen safety unit one week, handing outmaterials at the Cheshire Show the next or helping out at one of ouraward evenings the next.

You will receive a full induction, provided with a volunteer uniformand ID and, if your driving licence allows, tested to drive some of ournon-operational vehicles.

Role PlayTraining Role Play VolunteerAvailability of this service is: 4 events per month

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Training Department run major rescuescenario training sessions for trainee, oncall and wholetimefirefighters. This department invites volunteers to play minor roles, bygiving a brief before the exercise and a de-brief following theexercise. It is essential that you understand and comply with allinstructions given to you.

See below for a sample of scenarios volunteers may be involved in.

1. Placed on the first platform of a ladder tower, acting having abroken leg – although you will play the live part, a simulatedcasualty will be used for removal from the tower.

2. Run from the entrance of the smoke house (using syntheticsmoke) acting as a family member with relations still trappedinside.

3. On location as a bystander or walking wounded to a RoadTraffic Collision, you may also be asked to reinact the part of acasualty trapped in the vehicle requiring rescue.

4. Standing by a simulated casualty inside the smoke house(using synthetic smoke) so that the searching fire team canpick up your position using heat seeking detection equipment.The simulated casualty will be used for removal from thesmoke house.

Garden SupportGarden Support Volunteer - Requires a DBS checkAvailability of this service is: 9am - 5pm Monday - Friday,Summer/ Winter

We need volunteer gardeners who can assist and guide youth groupswho work with or in partnership with Cheshire Fire and RescueService (CFRS) and local schools. These gardeners will support thegroups to establish and maintain the communal gardens at selectedfire stations throughout Cheshire.

The gardens, dependent on size, can include a picnic seating area,vegetable and flower beds, wildlife areas, compost heap and pond.

These projects will be staffed by CFRS volunteers with the support ofCFRS staff members and the schools and youth groups we invite oneducational visits.

A passion for gardening, plus knowledge and experience of planting,growing and pruning flowers and vegetables is essential for this role.Tools and equipment will be provided along with volunteer uniformand overalls.

Road SafetyYou will be part of a team delivering consistent road safety messagesto members of the Cheshire community.

Motorway Engagement DaysAvailability of this service is: August

These events are carried out on motorway service areas acrossCheshire. To help get the message across, the use of videos andphotos are shown, backed up with information which relate tomotorway collisions.

Safety Campaigns

Availability of this service is: throughout the year

Throughout the year there are a number of Road Safety campaigns.Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) work with and support thesepartner agency initiatives by delivering messages coveringDistraction, Speeding, Seatbelts, Drug/Drink Driving, VehicleCondition and Pedestrians’ Safety

Drink, Drive CampaignsAvailability of this service is: June and December

CFRS supports the government’s “THINK” road safety campaign byspeaking to people about the dangers of drinking alcohol anddriving. These events are taken to workplaces, colleges, shoppingcentres and town centres to show people the consequences ofdrinking even a small amount of alcohol and driving.

Prince’s Trust Team PTT Volunteer - Requires a DBS checkAvailability of this service is: Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm,Summer/Winter

To support the young people and staff in the delivery of the Prince’sTrust

Team programme. Join our Prince’s Trust programme to supportyoung people increase their confidence, self esteem and motivationenabling them to improve their opportunities for a much morepositive future.

Duties will include:

• Supporting young people in completing their learning records

• Working with the team on community projects

• Supporting young people and staff during the ‘next steps’ week

• Support the team during fundraising activities

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service volunteers will need the necessaryskills and temperament as this is a rewarding role in a challengingenvironment.

Targeted Youth Support Team Targeted Youth Support Volunteer - Requires a DBS checkAvailability of this service is: Monday – Friday 9am – 9pm,(dependent on project) Summer/Winter

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Targeted Youth Support Team run severalyouth projects and need volunteers in all areas.

Primary Respect aged 8 - 11Pupils are selected by the school to attend 2 hour sessions once aweek for 6 weeks to help develop their confidence and responsibilityand make the most of their abilities.

Respect aged 13 - 16Young people who are referred to the nine week programme bymany agencies. The aim of the project is to establish an entitlementfor all children to develop and apply knowledge, skills andunderstanding that will help them to become successful learners,confident individuals and responsible citizens.

Both of our Respect courses allow young people the opportunity towork with firefighters to experience using equipment in a safe andcontrolled environment. By working with partner agencies andallowing young people the chance to get out and about in thecommunity we can challenge behaviours whilst offering new skills.

On the streets (OTS)Meet young people on the streets in areas having problems with antisocial behaviour particularly fire setting.

The aim is to engage young people, develop activities and facilitatepositive links between the young people and others/groups in theirlocal area to construct an ongoing legacy which is beneficial to allwithin the community.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service volunteers will be required to havethe necessary skills and temperament, whilst this is a rewarding roleit can sometimes be challenging.

Safety TeamHome Safety Assessments - Requires a DBS checkAvailability of this service is: Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm,Summer/Winter

Firefighters, advocates, and volunteers carry out Home SafetyAssessments (HSAs) across Cheshire. HSAs play a key role inprotecting people from the risk of fire in their own homes. The aim isto have working fire alarms in every home in Cheshire and providefire related safety advice to every householder.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to visit homes following leafletdrops or advertisement campaigns, to fit free smoke alarms and givegeneral fire prevention advice. HSAs will always be conducted inteams of two.

Leaflet Drops

Working in teams of two, volunteers will deliver leaflets in specifiedareas as directed by their manager, which offer free home safetyadvice.

Events

• Attending volunteer/job fairs organised locally to promotevolunteering duties, handing out promotional material andsharing experiences and explanations with potential newrecruits.

• Visiting local schools and community groups, delivering safetyadvice to classes covering all age ranges.

Protection Team Business Safety VolunteerAvailability of this service is: Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm,Summer/Winter

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service Protection Department fire safetyalong with strict, structured technical advice in line with legislationwhich makes all business premises safe for work and an informedworkforce that have the knowledge and skills to deal with situationsthat arise.

Volunteers will be required to attend fairs and promotional events, tohand out leaflets, record basic data, distribute promotional materialas requested and occasionally visit business premises.

Volunteers should note that at no time are they required or expectedto give out verbal technical advice, but would in these circumstancesbe able to direct the business to the right department or employee ofCheshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Volunteers must be able to reach Birchwood Fire Station within 30minutes of being called out and ideally be a car owner/driver.

Additional Information

Application processOn receipt of a completed application form that meets our volunteerstandard, applicant details are logged onto the volunteer database and theinterview paperwork is prepared. This is sent to the line manager of theapplicants chosen volunteer role. The line manager will contact theapplicant to arrange an interview. If successful at interview, the applicantwill be asked to complete a Disclosure and Barring form (DBS), plus 3 formsof ID (role dependent). Once all of this paperwork is received, referencesare requested and on return of these and the DBS certificate, volunteeragreements are sent to the applicants home address, when returned theline manager will be informed that the volunteer has been successful intheir application.

At this point the volunteer and line manager can discuss availability andforthcoming opportunities.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) formerlyCriminal Records Bureau (CRB)DBS CheckYou will be advised if your role requires a DBS check.

Your application will NOT be automatically rejected if the check is returneddisclosing convictions or police cautions. However you may be invited tomeet with a panel to discuss these disclosures. The panel will decide onyour suitability for a Fire and Rescue Service volunteer role.

DBS checks have to be refreshed every 3 years, however there is no costinvolved for the volunteer.

If you are engaged as a volunteer in a role that does not require a DBScheck, but then decide to apply to volunteer for one of the roles that does,then you will be required to complete a DBS check.

All volunteers must declare to Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service anyconvictions or cautions they receive while active as a volunteer. Thisinformation must be securely forwarded to the Service’s DBS LeadSignatory in the HR Department.

Mileage ExpensesHow to claimMileage expenses will be reimbursed for travel in personal vehicles to andfrom the location of the volunteering opportunity within Cheshire, if thereis no alternative cheaper form of transport available. Any distance coveredoutside of Cheshire will need prior permission from the department leadofficer. Volunteers and volunteer cadet staff will need to complete a“Mileage Claim Form”, which is available from the volunteer coordinator.On the first claim volunteers and volunteer cadet staff will need to include awitnessed copy of their driver’s licence and insurance policy along with acurrent MOT certificate. Please note it is the responsibility of the volunteeror volunteer cadet staff to ensure that they are legally covered by theirinsurance company, they must contact their insurers to check that they arecovered before using their vehicle for volunteering duties. Volunteer Achievement CertificatesIn return for your volunteer commitment, we have introduced ‘volunteerachievement certificates’. The hours can be accrued over a number ofyears, and certificates will be awarded accordingly. These certificates can beincluded in your skills portfolio or CV to add merit.
