In the Shanghai Challenge Bibendum, Wanxiang

EV Company won the 4 A prize which awarded

b y i n t e r n a t i o n a l v e h i c l e a s s o c i a t i o n .

Now Wanxiang electric buses have been running

normally along the beach of the West Lake.

Company has studied polymer lithium-ion batteries for

over five years,and made a great progress on the research

of electrolyte, cathode material and security of polymer

lithium-ion battery (PLB). The battery won’t explode or

catch fire in extreme circumstances, such as crush,

penetration or short-circuit etc.. The products are certified

by National Authority, and the performance of the PLB

k e e p s o n t h e p r e m i e r .

In polymer lithium-ion batteries,

liquid electrolytes are replaced by gel

polymer electrolytes. The gel polymer

electrolytes not only have good ionic

conductivity, but also can act as

separator in polymer battery. The

electrodes of polymer lithium-ion

battery are basically the same as

liquid lithium-ion battery, so the

working principles of them are similar.

Figure1 is the charging and discharging principle of polymer lithium-ion battery. During

the process of charge and discharge, lithium ions intercalate into and de-intercalate from the

electrodes through the gel polymer electrolytes. And then the battery converts chemical

e n e r g y i n t o e l e c t r i c e n e r g y .

Spinel lithium manganese oxide has been investigated extensively as a

promising positive material for polymer lithium-ion battery because of the

following advantages: (1) abundance and low cost; (2) environment

protection; (3) good safety and overcharge resistance. The cycle performance

at room temperature and elevated temperature has been improved

e x t e n s i v e l y b y m o d i f y i n g t h e sp ine l L i -Mn-O compound .

Negative materials have special advantages in structure and morphology: (1) spherical structure with high pile-density is available for compact filling and the improvement of energy density. (2) small specific surface area improves safety and reduces the irreversible capacity loss resulted from the formation of SEI layer during the initial charge/discharge cycle. (3) layered graphitic structure is in favor of reversible intercalation/deintercalation of lithium ions. (4) special sphere and stable inner structure permit high rate charge and discharge.

The gel polymer electrolytes not only have good ionic conductivity, but also can

act as separator in polymer battery. The liquid electrolyte and lithium salt are

absorbed sufficiently, which can ensure the inner gel system and safety of battery.
