Imperialism- Britain, France, Russia, Germany & Italy scrambled for

colonies in Africa, Asia & the Pacific- SPAM taught us that the U.S. was now a new Imperial force

to be reckoned with!

Nationalism: pride in one’s nation• European nationalists demanded freedom & self-gov’t• Belief: people with a common language & culture should

throw off foreign rule & form their own countries

Pros & Cons of Nationalism+ encouraged unity & independence at the same time

- created mistrust & rivalry between nations

An Example:- France & Germany go to war in 1870- France lost & had to give Germany Alsace-Lorraine (iron-rich)- France never forgot this blow to their pride & hoped to regain the territory in the future

= You come out of war anticipating future war
