A note from THOMAS L. THOMAS, III

Quote

“...the school’s mission is embraced by all of Ware’s constituents, reaching beyond the students to challenge all whom it touches.”

Dear Friends,

As Head of School I am often asked by prospective and current parents why Ware Academy is the best school for their children. While there are many reasons - such as having an academic program devoted to the achievement of excellence, the development of one’s mind, body and character, an outstanding and dedicated faculty, competitive athletics and a commitment to the fine and performing arts - there is a close-knit fabric of the Ware community. We value the development of good character. Our students’ behavior demonstrates kindness, mutual support, respect, integrity and leadership.

Last fall a team representing the Virginia Association of Independent Schools spent three days on our campus conducting an extensive evaluation of the school for reaccreditation. In their report, the team made a special note to laud the faculty for its extreme dedication, work ethic and passion for teaching with a commitment to professional growth and development. They noted that the school’s mission is embraced by all of Ware’s constituents, reaching beyond the students to challenge all whom it touches.

In addition to a very positive VAIS accreditation visit, last year was one of significant growth for advancement. The Ware Academy Fund enjoyed the highest percentage of participation and subsequently raised the largest sum of unrestricted dollars to date. Due to the wonderful work of the last year’s Auction Committee, attendance for the Annual Auction was the greatest in the history of the event, raising more money for the school than any other auction in previous years. Sponsorship for the Golf Tournament was also at an all time high. Each year many volunteers come out to the course to assist with making the day very fun and enjoyable for players and guests.

In the spring we unveiled the Master Facility Site Plan. This work by a prominent architectural firm in Richmond identifies and addresses the need for updated and new space to the physical plant over the next five to ten years.

In this annual report are the names of all of our friends who supported Ware Academy through generous donations of money, gifts in kind, services and time, and the many sponsors of our fundraising events. Contained in these pages is our acknowledgment and sincere gratitude for your philanthropy. Thank you for making Ware Academy a priority in your charitable giving.

Sincerely,

Thomas L. Thomas, IIIHead of School

2013 - 2014 Highlights

It was a record year for the 12th Annual Ware Academy Golf Tournament held in June at the Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club in Kilmarnock. It raised $24,000 for school programs.

During the 2013-2014 year, in and out of the classroom, through hands on learning activities, and more, Ware Academy continued to empower each student to achieve academic excellence, emphasizing the development of mind, body and character.

Ware Academy’s convocation ceremony featured Raymond Googe, who taught the student body, parents, faculty and staff about resilience. Raymond graduated from Ware Academy in 2005, completed high school at Woodberry Forest School and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Richmond. He attended Ware Academy on a scholarship sponsored by Jacob’s Ladder, an enrichment program for gifted, at risk students. The key to resilience, he said, is to get comfortable with being uncomfortable, grit your teeth and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

“Wild About Ware!” Our signature fundraising event, held in November 2013, raised a record amount with the final tally coming in at $55,000. Many thanks to our generous sponsors, engaging silent and live auctions and generous community.

The Ware Waves showcased sportsmanship and great athletic skill throughout the year with practices, weekly games, tournaments and invitationals. Thank you to all the parents who supported each team from the sidelines and congratulations to our athletes.

From sending care packages to Afghanistan to helping the Gloucester Mathews Humane Society with its annual fundraiser and raising money to provide children battling terminal illnesses with a superhero cape, students from across the campus stayed busy completing various community service projects. Pictured here are Middle School students who collected, packaged and delivered toiletries and food to the Bread for Life Community Food Pantry to support those in need during the holiday season.

“Name that Movie!” Ware Academy students, from Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth Grade, practiced for months and astounded family and friends during two sold out shows. The winter holiday program, which also featured dancing, singing and musical instrument performances, was equally compelling.

Congratulations, Ware Academy Class of 2014 who received their diplomas during a ceremony Friday, June 6 at the Ware Episcopal Church in Gloucester, VA. The graduates attended various high schools across the region.

The emphasis of Ware Academy’s Fine and Performing Arts Program is to develop the students’ skills and appreciation for the Arts through developmentally appropriate hands-on learning experiences, as well as observing live performances. The program focuses on exposing the students to new experiences and building individual creativity and self-confidence as an artist and performer. Visual and performing arts classes are available for grades Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth.

Traditionally, most independent schools throughout our country have an Annual Fund that serves as a vital source of revenue. The Ware Academy Fund serves our school as its primary fundraiser each year. There have been increases in the amount of funds raised and the level of participation percentages in the last three years to the Ware Academy Fund.

A donation to the Ware Academy Fund provides positive opportunities for our school. Donations have an impact on a daily basis. Donors can see their gifts in action through the following:
