PRINCIPAL’S REPORT It was lovely to receive some much-needed rain over the weekend. Whilst it hasn’t broken the drought, it has defi nitely li ed the spirits of many and we can only hope there will be more rain to follow.

Many of our WPS children are commi ed to spor ng groups beyond our school and it is always nice to be able to report on their many successes. Over the weekend, Cassidy Turner, McKenzi Rose, Lily Brice and Mrs McIntosh all competed in a Physical Culture compe on. Each of these young ladies did an amazing job and performed to a high standard. On the football fi eld several of our boys played at the Moree Junior Rugby Union Carnival – scoring impressive tries and execu ng with great skill. A big congratula ons is extended to our junior Wombats who played in Group 19 fi nals in Moree on Saturday. Whilst our Under 12 boys were narrowly defeated and have wrapped up their season, the Under 10’s and Intermediate League Tag players have progressed straight through to the Grand Final. Also, our very own Mr Reynolds will take his place in the Senior Wombats team to contest the Group 19 Grand Final against Guyra! A wonderful weekend for Warialda sport with countless WPS students (and staff ) excelling!

Last week, Miss Cole, Mrs Digby and Mrs van Velthuizen accompanied our Year 3 & 4 Touch Football teams to a gala day in Inverell. Our students had an incredible day, learning to play a new sport – making new friends and having a red hot go! Thank you to the organisers for making this day possible.

Our annual Book Week, Book Fair was a thoroughly enjoyable day. Our Teacher Librarian – Mrs Smith did a brilliant job of coordina ng the Fair with a huge amount of books fi nding new homes! The dress up component of the day was of an incredibly high standard with the eff ort made by students and staff simply outstanding! If you didn’t get to see these costumes, visit our school Facebook page to check out the crazy faces!

On Thursday, we welcomed approximately 50 visitors from the Country Women’s Associa on to WPS as we hosted the annual Country of Study Day. The students found the day to be an amazing learning opportunity. We wish to thank the CWA ladies for their hospitality and thorough organisa on of this important event.

Congratula ons to Mr Porter and the students of 5/6P who hosted our most recent assembly on Friday. The assembly was based on the theme of vikings – with students showcasing what they have learned during a unit of work studied on this topic. Well done!

This Friday, our 2019 Kinder crew will join us for a Kinder transi on experience from 9am to 11am. Parents are reminded that the boys and girls need only bring a hat, water bo le and piece of fruit for this occasion. We look forward to see all of the happy faces on Friday morning.

A er a couple of false starts, our next fi xture of the PSSA Touch Football (boys and girls) against Inverell Public School has now been confi rmed to take place on Monday 3rd of September. Both fi xtures will be played at the Warialda Recrea on Ground. Students will receive notes shortly to provide parents with exact details of mes.

Have an amazing week!

Dan van Velthuizen - Principal

SCHOOL NEWS...

At the beginning of this term, WPS adopted a new whole school spelling program –g g p p g p gSMART spelling. As teachers, we can’t begin to explain how excited we are to be p g g pusing a program that explicitly focuses on rules and spelling patterns.

With spelling words going home for homework, we are conscious of the need to p g g gdevelop a common understanding of our direction at school. Below covers some p gmore technical language that underpin our spelling program.

Letter Grouping

Graph – 1 letter making the sound

e.g. ‘a’ as in cat

Digraph – 2 letters making the sound

e.g. ‘wh’ as in wheel

Split Diagraph – 2 letters making one sound that are split with a letter in between them

e.g. kite – ‘i’ and ‘e’ making the long i sound

Trigraph - 3 letters making the one sound

e.g. ‘ure’ as in measure

CELEBRATING CLASSROOM EXCELLENCE WITH 1/2M

What’s happening in 1/2M?

We have had a wonderful start to Term 3. We are enjoying learning all about Alligators in our Literacy Unit. If you visit our room you’ll see our awesome Alligator art and you can read Alligator facts on our wall!

We have also been extremely lucky to have Mrs Forsyth and her snails visit our room! What fun we had watching the snails slide across the carpet whilst leaving a silver trail behind them!

Mrs Amy McIntosh
