The New Deal

1932- Franklin D. Roosevelt is elected president- “promises new deal for the American people”

New Deal- series of laws that were designed to: Promote economic recovery Relieve the suffering of the unemployed Reform defects in the economy Improve society

CCC – Civilian Conservation Corps

Created in 1932 It provided jobs for young,

single men building roads, trails, parks, planting trees, and control flooding

Helped address joblessness amongst young, single men

Popular in GAKennesaw Mountain

National Battlefield Park, FDR State Park, St. Simons Airport, and many other projects throughout GA

Created in 1933Farmers continued to grow crops such

as cotton during the Depression, which made these prices of these items go down.

The federal government offered to pay farmers not to grow the crops.

This caused prices to rise- farmers were able to make money and eliminated having a surplus.

Hurt Tenant Farmers- they did not receive the money, and instead it went to the land owner.

REA - Rural Electrification Authority

Created in 1935It provided power to rural

areas at a discounted rate. One of the most important

and far-reaching New Deal programs

It was needed b/c rural Americans could not afford electricity

SSA - Social Security Administration

Created in 1935Provided retirement and

unemployment insurance from taxes paid by both workers and employers. It also gave assistance to the blind, the elderly, the disabled, and widows w/ children.

Drawback: Farmers not covered It was needed because so many

Americans were plunged into poverty, unable to find work, & the elderly were without savings & unable to work.

GOVERNOR Eugene Talmadge• Conservative GA politician and

white supremacist• Took a stump around with him

and stood on it to deliver fiery speeches

• He wanted to balance the state budget.

• He made decisions which also hurt the state.

• He did not like the New Deal- especially anything which gave aid to African Americans.

• He forced the removal of 2 UGA faculty members for supporting integration.

Why did many Americans hope to stay out of World War II? World War II began in September 1939 Many Americans saw it as a “European” problem

Lend-Lease Act

What was the Lend-Lease Act and how did it benefit both the Allies and the U.S.? Passed by Congress in February of 1941 and signed

into law by Roosevelt in March U.S. sent billions of dollars worth of supplies and

military equipment to the United Kingdom, France, the Soviet Union, and China and these countries gave the U.S. base rights in their military bases

The Bombing of Pearl Harbor

How did the bombing of Pearl Harbor lead to U.S. entry into World War II? On December 7, 1941, over 300 Japanese planes

surprise attacked the Navy base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii killing over 2000 Americans and destroying over 150 U.S. ships

Changed the vast majority of opinion about staying out of the war

U.S. declared war on Japan on December 8, 1941 Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S. and then

the U.S. declared war on Germany and Italy

Georgia’s Contributions to World War II

How did Georgia contribute to the war effort during World War II? Supplied thousands of soldiers and sailors as well as

military bases Contributed industrially with the construction of both

airplanes and ships Richard Russell and Carl Vinson, two Georgia political

leaders, helped the country prepare and continue to fight a long and difficult two front war

Bell Aircraft

What impact did the Bell Aircraft Company have on World War II and on Georgia? Produced over 650 B-29 bombers (America’s most

technologically advanced bomber of the war) Employed almost 30,000 people, many from Georgia (In 1951, the Lockheed Martin Company took over the

facility that continues to employ Georgians today)

Military Bases

What role did military bases in Georgia play during World War II? Trained and supplied the military (Fort Benning near

Columbus was the largest and viewed as the best infantry facility during the war)

Held thousands of enemy prisoners (Today, provide thousands of jobs and pump millions

of dollars into the economy)

What were “liberty ships” and where were they produced in Georgia? Ships built by civilians (including women) that were
