• In English, the subject and the direct object in a sentence are distinguished by their placement. Subject, verb, and then the direct object.
– The man eats the dog. / The dog eats the man.
• In German, the placement of the subject and direct object can change, thus the need for grammatical cases.
– the subject of the sentence is the nominative case (der Nominativ)
– the direct object is the accusative case (der Akkusativ)
Word order can change, so how do we know what the subject is in the sentence?
The endings of the articles show the function in the sentence.
