• National Self-determination- The right of a people (or ethnicity) to choose it’s own leaders

• League of Nations – a group of nations gathered together to stop countries from making war

What was the Treaty Supposed To Do? • A fair peace achieved by

• Germans forced to sign a “War Guilt” clause and to pay billions in reparations. Germany was unable to pay

• German Army reduced to 100,000

• Many new nations created to weaken Germany

League of Nations-An early United Nations

• America did not join: they didn’t want to be dragged into future European wars

• Without U.S. support the League of Nations was unable to take action in various problems and disputes around the world

The Mandate system

• Britain and France promised to end imperialism in colonies that supported in the war

• The victors did not keep their promises to the colonies, and place them under the “mandate system” until they were ready to stand on their own

• The British mandate created a place for a new Jewish State

• Problems, greed, shortcomings of the Treaty of Versailles caused more anger, frustration, and resentment than before World War I
