Pre-Test Answers:

1. Lines of Latitude measure distance: North and South

2. Three states below 30°N = Florida, Texas, Louisiana

3. State mostly east of 70°W = Maine4. Three states that extend west of 120°W =

California, Oregon, Washington

6. X is on: Water7. Star coordinates = 20°N, 100°W

Total up your Pre-Test and turn it into Mrs. McKenica. Formative grade is out of 11.

Latitude and Longitude

• Latitude and longitude work like a map grid, but on a global scale. These two sets of imaginary lines encircle the globe. Locations on these lines are stated in degrees (°).• Latitude and Longitude coordinates are

the best way to find exact location on the Earth.

•What are some other ways to locate places?•Why do you think latitude and longitude are

better ways to locate places?

Page 7: Warm- Up: Latitude Longitude Pre Test #9 Content Objective: SWBAT identify location based on latitude and longitude coordinates. Language Objectives: Define.

•Prime Meridian: starting point for measuring longitude. It is labeled as 0⁰ and runs north/south.

Page 8: Warm- Up: Latitude Longitude Pre Test #9 Content Objective: SWBAT identify location based on latitude and longitude coordinates. Language Objectives: Define.

•Longitude: Lines on a map used to measure distance east or west of the Prime Meridian

• Equator: line of latitude that divides the Northern Hemisphere from the Southern Hemisphere. It is labeled as 0⁰ and runs east/west.

Latitude is 1st and Longitude is 2nd:Find: 35 N, 120 W ⁰ ⁰What state is it in?

•Now we are going to quietly practice with a partner nearby.•Turn your paper over to the back and use the coordinates to find the location of the letter they are referring to.•PLEASE ASK FOR HELP IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND! =)
