Warm Up

What do you already know about OUR solar system? Get a sort envelope and match the planet with its facts.

Did you know? By about 3500 BC (and maybe long before that), people thought of these moving things in the sky as living beings – gods, with their own human-like personalities. If the moon and the planets were gods, they could affect the lives of people, and so the Mesopotamians and the Egyptians began to chart the movements of the planets and the moon to try to predict the future.

Geocentric model (1)

- Earth – centered universe

- Earth is the center of the solar system

- Stars and planets rotate around the Earth

Aristotle (2)

- Grandfather of science

- Used observation – based science

- Conducted experiments to study phenomena scientifically

- So well respected that his WRONG ideas were taught for CENTURIES!

Ptolemy (3)

- Astronomer and mathematician - Published his ideas in books - He developed a math equation

that supported the geocentric model

Ptolemy’s Model

Heliocentric model (4)

- Sun – centered universe

- Planets are in orbits around the Sun

- Stars are distant and do not move

Copernicus (5)

- Brought Heliocentrisim to the Renaissance

- Used scientific observation

- Discovered that Earth rotates on its own axis

- His followers were called Copernicans

Galileo (6)

- Built a telescope to prove that the Copernican model was correct

- Forced to recant (admit wrong-doing) his discoveries by the Church

- Although locked away for life, his ideas were shared in books

How did Galileo use his telescope to prove

Copernicus right?

Space Distances (Interplanetary)

• To measure distances in near space, we use the

astronomical unit (AU)

• 1 AU = 150 million kilometers ( 149 , 597 , 870 . 7 km)

• 1 AU = the avg. distance between Earth and the Sun

1 AU 0.39 AU 0.72 AU
